Book Description
"The most shocking fiction I have read in years. What is shocking about it is both the idea and the sheer imaginative brilliance with which Mr. Shute brings it off."
THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
They are the last generation, the innocent victims of an accidental war, living out their last days, making do with what they have, hoping for a miracle. As the deadly rain moves ever closer, the world as we know it winds toward an inevitable end.... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Found by chance, enjoyed this very much...
I was searching for fiction similar in tone to McCarthy's 'The Road' and came across this older title. Very haunting read. Showcases believable common people and how they would conduct themselves while facing the impending nuclear doom. A great cautionary tale in our often uncertain times. Schools should make novels like this required reading moreso than some of the removed literary 'classics' in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars A haunting novel
I read this novel when I was a kid, and felt that it was one of the most depressing books that I had ever read. I then recommended it to all of my friends as a must read. I still feel that way about the book, and have re-read it several times as an adult. Very powerful and well written. For those who like the book, the original movie with Gregory Peck is every bit as good, and should not be missed. Note that there was a remake a few years ago that really didn't make the cut.

5-0 out of 5 stars great read!!
This book was a great read, it was nearly impossible to put it down.I would not suggest anyone who is looking for a happy ending to read this book, but if you are someone who wants a well written, well thought out and an extreamly great story to read, this would be the book for you. While reading the book you actually feel that you are there alongside the characters. When you finish the book you will most likely appreciate life more and you will see the world a bit differently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beauty inDepression
It almost never works that a book as depressing as this is a cure for depression, but in this case it is just that. The end, while vile and disgusting, remains dignified and almost beautiful. That is what makes this such a perfect read. When you put down the book you cannot help but ask yourself what you would do if you had six months to live, and then three months, then a matter of weeks, days and hours. You take comfort in the new understanding in our world about nuclear disaster, and are chilled at what is still out there.

This book brings your emotions crashing into a pit of despair, and after reading it you inevitably re-evaluate your life. I have bought over fifty copies of this book and given them away to people who seemed to need it.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the Beach- a disturbing prediction
As a child of the 50s and 60s, I found the book very credible.
The most powerful thing in this novel is its immediacy to our own lives.
We exist in an age when nuclear warfare is an immediate possibility.

I was touched by the captain's insistence on thinking of his family in the present tense, and refusal of the woman, Moira's advances, in deference to his obviously married state (despite his awareness of the reality, the captain continues to think of them as he left them).

As a person who, as a child in the 60s, learned to jump under my desk in school, during air-raid drills, I was profoundly affected by this story.

Furthermore, I was very moved by this author's vision of how people might hold on to hope, at the same time that they accept, on various levels, the inevitability of destruction.

I have read thousands of books in my lifetime, most of which I recall only slightly.I will never forget this book.

Editorial Review

Book Description

In an effort to define what constitutes a feminist reading of literary works, Ann C. Hall offers an analytic technique that is both a feminist and a psychoanalytic approach, applying this technique to her study of women characters in the modern dramatic texts of Eugene O’Neill, Harold Pinter, and Sam Shepard.

This is the first study to treat these three writers in tandem, and while Hall uses the work of Jacques Lacan, Luce Irigaray, and other psychoanalytic feminist critics in her close readings of specific dramatic texts, she also brings in commentaries by critics, directors, performers, and historians. Her technique thereby provides us with a new and significant method for addressing female characters as written by male playwrights, a task that she argues is not only a valid and necessary part of feminist dramatic criticism but a part of theatrical production as well.

From Pinter’s play A Kind of Alaska, Hall extracts a metaphor for the patriarchal oppression of women, contextualizing such oppression through an examination of O’Neill’s madonnas, Pinter’s whores, and Shepard’s female saviors as they are represented in O’Neill’s Iceman Cometh, Long Day’s Journey into Night, and A Moon for the Misbegotten; Pinter’s Homecoming, No Man’s Land, Betrayal, and A Kind of Alaska; and Shepard’s Buried Child, True West, and A Lie of the Mind.

Since the works of O’Neill, Pinter, and Shepard continue to be performed to popular acclaim, Hall hopes that a better understanding of the female characters in these plays will influence the performances themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concertina player
This is a fantastic resource. Many of the best arrangements are in this version. I have 4 versions of O'Neill's: Krassen, Walton's, Ryan's, and Jim O'Neill's. I use them all, but especially Krassen and Waltons. Do not believe the dicouraging remarks. This is one of the best. Get them all and compare the tunes. Each has strengths and weaknesses. Taken together they give you the best of all worlds.

1-0 out of 5 stars Over-rated, overly-simplified settings of tunes.
The problem isn't only that a lot of tunes have been left out that were in the original edition offered by Daniel Collins. But Krassen has altered many tunes so that instead of presenting piping versions -- which the original offered -- we now have simplified fiddle-friendly versions. Many pipe ornaments have been lost. Krassen has lost much of the magic.
O'Neill was a piper and many of the versions of tunes he saved came from pipers. This is also true of the earlier collections of tunes from which O'Neill drew for many of his tunes, such as Ryan's Mammoth Collection. In Krassen's version a lot of the classical, 19th. Century pipery flavor has been sacrificed for "cleaner,"presumably "modern" versions. This is the last edition of O'Neill's one should consider buying. I play fiddle, flute, and concertina, I've lived in Ireland for years, and have been playing Irish traditional music for over thirty years. I know this sounds terribly opinionated. But even if you play fiddle and learn from the dots you should use a tune-book closer to the source than this. Get the big yellow Collin's edition or the slim white-covered "condensed" O'Neill's collection. You'll be happier in the long run.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be the basis of any library of Irish tunes.
O'Neills contains hundreds of well known and not so well known tunes collected around the turn of the 20th century. This is an excellant source book to find traditional settings for tunes.Though this revision is geared towards the fiddle player, any musician will find this a wonderful reference. There is a previous version of O'Neills that contains some tunes that were lost in the revision by Mr. Krassen. Some people prefer this earlier edition. ...
