A long time ago in a galaxy far away
This book is set in a world that has long since disappeared, and was only ever the world of the privileged few. It is set in a well off English boarding school (why were English upper class and upper middle class families so keen to send their children away from home for months at a time?), where the senior pupils had junior students as "fags" (more or less part time servants), where sports were almost more important than lessons and"playing the game" and "being a man" were the ultimate ethics. The Luck of the Lennites tells the story of a school "house" which is impossibly slack and disrespected, and the housemaster seems not to care, but he appoints a "cripple" ( a senior student with a damaged leg who walks with the help of a cane) as house captain. Against the odds, this somewhat despised boy (if sport is the highest goal, a disabled person will rank very low in the food chain) wins over his housemates one by one and lifts the performance of Lenn's house until it stands within hope of winning the house championship.

This story is very old fashioned these days, and the writing is trite and simplistic and jingoistic by today's standards. And yet, somehow the book still wins you over. Everyone loves an underdog coming good against the odds. And the rise of Lenn's house is described in a way that makes every small gain an epic, and the finale a joyful triumph.
