5-0 out of 5 stars Not the usual fan biography
Quirk, the author of more than 20 film-star biographies, reveals a Newman that might be unfamiliar to his adoring fans. Book reveals something of Newman's dark side and takes a sharp look at his acting as well. Hard-hitting and not written for members of Newman's cult following. A must-have for the Newman completist.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this book at all cost!
What is the matter with this man? If he dislikes Paul Newman so much, why did he even bother to spend time and energy to write this book? Perhaps he should just take out an ad in the newspaper to show the world his disdain for the actor. This biography is by far the worst, most subjective of all the biographies I have ever read. Please stay away from this book, whether you're a Paul Newman fan or not. If you're a fan, you will most likely want to call up the author and demand an explaination and perhaps moeny back for the crap you've just read. If you're not Paul's fan, you shouldn't even read this book because it is full of personal prejudice and thin evidence.

1-0 out of 5 stars Slanderous
If you are looking for an objective account of Paul Newman's life and work stay far away from this book.Quirk takes every chance to discredit Newman's acting ability and personality. At the begining of each paragraph, you begin to anticipate another stab at Newman and without fail it would come in one form or another.Quirk over and over again reveals his disdain for the actor when he should of been more concerned with the facts and the story.

1-0 out of 5 stars Superficial and patronizing
This man obviously doesn't like Paul Newman and feels superior to him.But that is no excuse for Lawrence Quirk to pretend to know Newman's inmost thoughts and motivations with little or no clue to the reader as to wherethis information is coming from.Example: "He was saddened but notdevastated by the loss of his mother".Where is the authority forthis?Newman has given many people great pleasure and he will be longremembered and revered whatever Quirk's opinion. ... Product Description
Paul Newman's best-known films, including The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, and The Color of Money, are cherished both by movie lovers and within the wider popular culture. Dan O'Brien now explores the lineage of Newman's life. His father did not approve of his son's acting ambitions, but Newman forged on regardless and graduated from New York's fabled Actors Studio. He made a stunningly successful marriage with Joanne Woodward, but lost a son in tragic circumstances, and embraced political activism and good causes in later life. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as well-written or insightful as it might have been
Someone needs to write an updated biography for Paul Newman and do better justice to the life of this interesting and talented man.

A cheap, outdated paperback, few photos to speak of, and the used copy I received was only in "fair" condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Paul Newman

Product Description
After his debut in October of 1962, Doctor Solar swiftly rose to join Magnus, Robot Fighter as one of Gold Key's most popular original heroes. Stunning painted covers sucked in even the most casual comics reader, and the source of Solar's astounding powers - nuclear radiation - addressed one of the biggest fears of the day. While the character has been reinvented in the decades since, his adventures in this archive of Gold Key and Wilson comics completes the body of work that formed his foundation. This collection restores and reprints issues #23 through 31 of the original Doctor Solar comic book series - the revolutionary science-fiction adventure that gave birth to one of comics' most distinctive and beloved super heroes - for the first time in over 40 years. His guest appearance in The Occult Files of Dr. Spektor #14 is also included, making this the biggest Doctor Solar volume of them all! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Final Archive of this weird Gold Key superhero title
This is the final archive volume of Gold Key Comics' strange atomic superhero.

Gold Key (an imprint of Western Publications, thru its subsidiary "K.K. Publications) was an overall strange comic book company. Most of its products were licensed titles (tv shows, Disney, Walter Lantz, Tarzan, etc).It did do some original stuff (Magnus, Brothers of the Spear, Dr Spektor, Tragg, Dagar), including Doctor Solar. But, as usually, they did them different. All the adventure titles had full painted covers. They really didn't do any straight superheroes.Doctor Solar was probably the closest, but even then he was different.

Doctor Solar was one of a handful of 'atomic superheroes', almost all of whom (like Captain Atom and Nukla) were 'destroyed' in an atomic explosion, but somehow able to come back.Doctor Solar did (btw, that's the character's real name, not his superhero alter-ego), but when he 'powered up', his skin turned green and he radiated.(uh, if he has control of his nuclear powers, he should be able to prevent that, right?).

So he goes into action as the "Man of the Atom", and later got an all-red superhero suit.

This volume, being the last of four, reprints the final stories of his original series. Then we have the issues from his later revival before Western (now using Whitman for their comics), shuts down.

This change is kind of glaring in the stories. The stories had been done by the same writer/artist, with painted covers. When Dr Solar is brought back, Whitman no longer uses painted covers. The first new comic has a story with the same writer/artist team. Was this left over from the previous run? After that, we get a new writer and artist, who makes some changes.Dr Solar gets a first name. And we have some silly robot assistants (who look too much like some of the robots in Disney's "Black Hole".Since the artist, Dan Spiegle, had worked on the comic version of that, maybe that's not surprising).I do have to wonder if there was any unpublished Dr Solar work when Whitman stopped publishing???

And we get a rare crossover comic between Dr Solar and Dr. Spektor (another great GK series that needs to be reprinted).

And we have a nice intro by Batton Lash.

Now, what IS missing is some good background info. How about contacting the creators of these stories (if they are still around, I know Dan Spiegle and Don Glut are) and get some input from them. What lead to Doctor Solar being cancelled the first time? The first story in the revived series was written by the original writer. Was this a story left over from the original series? Why the change in writers after that, which shows a change in direction (new robot characters and the like)? What were the reasons for including him in Dr Spektor? His title wasn't being published then, so was this an attempt to drum up interest in a new series? Was there anything left unpublished from the new series when it was cancelled? The inner workings of Western is unknown to most comic book fans, and this would have been a good opportunity to find out more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT companion to the film
A True work of art by Tim Robbins. The amount of work and attention to detail is boldly shown by both the film and this book. Robbins not only provides the viewer with background, facts and explains some of the metaphors one may not have caught otherwise, but also includes the full script!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great companion to the movie
I got this after falling in love with the movie Cradle Will Rock, and it did not fail to amaze me!It balances a script with so much historical information to back it up, insights, and pictures both from the movie and the real moments of Cradle Will Rock.It has informational blurbs about Marc Blitzstein: Composer and Enigma, Orson Welles, Hallie Flanagan, Christopher Marlowe and the questioning of him being a communist, the real Olive Stanton, the death of Vaudeville, Diego Rivera, and so many other things. It also has great pictures from the film, including some candid shots.I used it as a source on my paper on the Federal Theatre Project, it's an excellent source of historical information, but it's also very entertaining to read! The day I got it I spent hours going through it.It's well worth the money, my favorite coffee table book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo!
This book includes movie script, many photos and the historical notes about the U.S. in 1930s.

The main plot is as follows: In the age of the Great Depression, the Federal Theater Project gave many U.S. people encouraging entertainment, and gave many actors and artists their jobs. The movement gave birth to Marc Blitzstein's masterpiece 'Cradle Will Rock' (directed by Orson Welles), but the play offended the reactionary congressmen. They made their soldiers lock out the theater. 'Cradle Will Rock,' can't the play see the light? Or...

In addition, the movie has the clash between Diego Rivera and Nelson Rockfeller over the Rockfeller Center's mural, etc. And the book has the detailed background notes of the movie. They are a great help for me. For example, I thought red-hunting movement was made by the Republicans, but it's my misunderstanding. And I learn that Harlem Renaissance (I like Zora Neale Hurston) wasn't an isolated and mutant movement. Etc, etc.

The movie and the book represent artists' courage. In the afterword, Tim Robbins says 'I believe threre are already too many artists who censor themselves.' I, too, think so. Bravo, Tim and his comrades ('gangs'?)! A toast to your brilliance, effort and bravery!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely companion to the movie.
The book is lovely, it includes the script, a foreward by Paul Newman, wonderful photos and historical background.A must have for fans of the movie. However, the hardcover version of this book has only 150 pages(including the index) not 208 as advertised, so you are getting more than aquarter less book for your money. ... Product Description
In 1927 C.A.A. Scott, while commenting on the apostle Paul's Christology, remarked that the "history of the word Glory in the Bible has yet to bewritten." By using methodology developed in semantics, semiotics, and, moregenerally, literary theory, Newman examines the origin and rhetoric of Paul'sGlory-Christology.The investigation involves three distinct tasks: (1) to plot thetradition-history of Glory which formed part of Paul's linguistic world, (2)to examine Paul's letter, in light of the reconstructed tradition-history ofGlory, in order to discern the rationale of Paul's identification of Christ asGlory and, (3) to map out the implications of such an identification forPaul's theological and rhetorical strategy. On the basis of this study, four conclusions are reached for understandingPaul. First, Paul inherited a symbolic universe with signs already "full" ofsignification. Second, knowing the (diachronically acquired) connotative rangeof a "surface" symbol (e.g. Glory) aids in discerning Paul's precisecontingent strategy. Third, knowing the "surface" symbol's referential powerdefines and contributes to the "deeper structure" of Paul's theologicalgrammar. Finally, the heuristic power within the construals of the Glorytradition coalesce in Paul's Christophany and thus provide coherence at the"deepest" level of Paul's Christology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from a former student
I studied under Carey Newman for three years in my undergrad studies. This volume, an adaptation and expansion of Newman's dissertation, explores in great detail the background for Paul's use of the term "glory" in his writings.Great emphasis is placed on Paul's "Christophany" (the appearance of the risen Jesus to Paul on the Damascus road) as the lens through which the apostle understands Jesus as the divine glory spoken of in the Old Testament.Although very technical in nature, this book offers great insight into the writings of the apostle Paul.Highly recommended. ...
