5-0 out of 5 stars Winning Tournament Karate
Winning Tournament Karate
Is an excellent book for People interested in learning more about traditional Karate. I think Chuck Norris has done an excellent job with this book. Ignore any bad reviews.
However I think there could have been a lot more to this book.
Mr Norris explains techniques very clearly and his combinations are excellent. Chuck Norris was a 6 times World Karate Champion so I am sure he can teach Karate to a very high standard. Anyone who doubts this should visit Chuck Norris Karate Academy in Texas. Buy the book you will learn a lot. I do hope Mr Norris writes more Karate Books & Maybe books on Bagwork Padwork Mixed Martial Arts and stretching. Chuck Norris holds a 10th Degree Blackbelt in Tang So Do and Tae Kwon Do as well as a Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. And Mr Norris currently trains under Carlos Machado.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Look into the Past
This book has some great drills for working out. Most of the drills for tournaments can be adapted to be updated to modern rules. This is a great look into the past of what tournaments used to be, to bad they have changed so much!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it offers
Martial arts books have come along ways since Chuck Norris penned this book in the mid 1970s. Nonetheless, there are still some good things in it that can motivate the reader to seek out more on the subject.

For example, there is Norris's red-line drill, which is still an excellent training method to push the karateka beyond what he thought was his top speed. He also touches briefly on mental imagery, which is arguably one of the top training methods used today by top athletes in virtually every sport. Lastly, Norris illustrates, with plenty of pictures, his concept of blitzing, that is, charging straight in and launching a hand or foot technique every half step or so.

This is still a good book worthy to be in every fighter's library.

Loren W. Christensen, author of FIGHTER'S FACT BOOK: Over 400 Concepts, Principles & Drills to Make You a Better Fighter

2-0 out of 5 stars Little To Offer
This book, written by Chuck Norris in 1975, the year he retire from sport karate competition, has very little to offer the karate student. The book doesn't have much material in written information, but instead, relies onstill photography to teach the karatestudent certian sport karatetechniques, such as entry techniques and striking drills.Overall, thebook is a very weak presentation on point fighting.

I highly admire ChuckNorris and if one would rather read books authored by him they should read"The Secret Power Within" or his autobiography. These books areinformative and at times, insightful. If someone is looking for a goodbook on sport karate and how to improve their sparring skills, I highlyrecommend the superiorbook "American Freestyle Karate" by DanAnderson.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST
I have read many karate, kung fu, and martial arts books. Most of them have been okay, but this book is the best one of them all. It tells you step-by-step on how to preform techniques. This is an excellent book forthe intermediate and advanced students. I recomend it to anyone. ... Read more

So let me ask you: Do words like powerful, passionate, successful, and joyful describe your Christian life? Are you living with purpose? Your purpose is the reason God put you here on earth. It-s essential to discover your purpose, but you also need passion because it is the fire that feeds your purpose. Once you know the God-given purpose for your life and you are fired with a holy passion to accomplish it, there isn-t anything the devil can throw at you that will stop you.
-Jack Graham

Our families, our churches, and the world need men of God. These are not just men who show up, but men who make strong, loving fathers, spiritual leaders, and teachers of future generations of men. With all the world-s mixed-up messages about what men should do and be, this book from Pastor Jack Graham, filled with solid biblical counsel, is much-needed.

Pastor Graham highlights what it takes to be a man-specifically, to be a man of God. In his straightforward, warm, often humorous manner, he gives men guidance on relating to their wives and leading their families, being good stewards of their financial assets, striving for moral purity, and more. He challenges men to live with purpose and passion-to put Christ first and to live radically for Him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chuck MF-ing NORRIS?
Yes, it really is THE Byron Coley: longtime "Forced Exposure" contributor, prolific rock critic, published poet, buddy of Thurston Moore, and frequent "on-camera authority" in indie rock docs such as those about the Fair brothers and the musician who may or may not be Sterling Smith. Read the very first page, and you'll have no doubts about the authenticity of its authorship. Is it a great bio? Well, let's just say it's noteworthy for the sheer weirdness of its existence. If you can find a reasonably affordable copy in halfway decent shape, it's worth the investment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of laughs
This featherweight biography of former karate champ and bad-movie king Chuck Norris boasts unintentional comedy on practically every page. There are Norris's signature veiled putdowns of late friend and co-star Bruce Lee, which say a lot more about his lingering insecurities than anything else. (Norris had difficulty understanding why "such a cult has grown up about [Lee] since his death", and noted that Lee "never fought professionally, but he was a good technician.") There is the great man's assessment of marijuana smokers. (Norris took his family to San Francisco's Tenderloin district to see the premiere of a film in which he played a bit part: "We get into the theater and people are smoking pot and all this...you know, there're a lot of perverts in there.") There's even a glowing endorsement of Ronald Reagan. ("What I like about Reagan is that he doesn't pussyfoot around. Like with Grenada...The guy may stick his foot in his mouth occasionally, but he says what he feels. If you don't like it, that's just tough." Wow. Talk about sticking your big, ugly foot in your big, stupid mouth.)
My heartiest laugh, however, was reserved for author Byron Coley, solely on the basis of the following passage: "Norris didn't really care if, as the Chicago Tribune maintained, 'the state of the martial-arts movie has been languishing ever since the death of Bruce Lee.' Let it languish! If a guy like the acrobatic Jackie Chan (sometimes called 'the Korean Burt Reynolds') wanted to be heir-apparent to the chop socky kingdom of Lee, let him."
Really? Jackie Chan is sometimes called "the Korean Burt Reynolds"? By whom? Can anyone think of a single example? I doubt it, because Jackie Chan is not Korean and Byron Coley likes to pull things out of his rear end. That Chuck Norris is one classy guy, though--no chop socky typecasting for him! He prefers to do more sophisticated films, heh heh heh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant.
I am pleased to announce that Byron Coley's biography of Chuck Norris is still considered definitive. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Where is the real Chuck Norris?
This book was written by a man that now peddles cigars and also owns part of several casinos in Las Vegas and even Moscow, Russia -and conflicts with "A Fistful of Kings", a recent book that was written by a former employee of his "enterprises". I don't know whether Mr. Norris is all PR or for real, but even his picture on the cover seems self serving.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Story!
I really enjoyed reading this book! It told me so much about Chuck Norris' life, and what's important to him, like helping kids to stay away from drugs. Reading about his family life was really interesting, and sad, buthow he dealt with it was even more interesting. Definitely a great book! ... Read more

It’s essential to discover your purpose, but you also need passion because it is the fire that feeds your purpose. Once you know the God-given purpose for your life and you are fired with a holy passion to accomplish it, there isn’t anything the devil can throw at you that will stop you.—Jack Graham

Our families, our churches, and the world need men of God. These are not just men who show up, but men who make strong, loving fathers, spiritual leaders, and teachers of future generations of men. With all the world’s mixed-up messages about what men should do and be, this book from Pastor Jack Graham, filled with solid biblical counsel, is much-needed.

Pastor Graham highlights what it takes to be a man—specifically, to be a man of God. In his straightforward, warm, often humorous manner, he gives men guidance on relating to their wives and leading their families, being good stewards of their financial assets, striving for moral purity, and more. "A Man of God: Essential Priorities for Every Man’s Life reminds us of how important it is to stop and think about our Christian life. Dr. Graham is straightforward about what’s required of disciples and clearly outlines the commitments we must make in our daily walk. He eloquently challenges us to continue to grow in our faith and to be passionate in order to impact others."—Roger StaubachHall of Fame Quarterback, Businessman

"If you talk about a man of God, that’s Jack Graham. I can’t think of a better pastor. As members of First Baptist West Palm Beach, he was instrumental in our growing Christian faith. He is a great father to his children and husband to Deb. Dr. Graham is truly a man of God with every essential priority for every man’s life. We all need that, and to have God in our life. Dr. Graham has written a tremendous book."—Gary CarterBaseball Hall of Fame Catcher

"If I or anyone else had any questions about how to lead a Christian life, theyare answered in Dr. Graham’s book. I had sometimes wondered after I received another chance at life what I was to do. Jack Graham’s book gave me what I needed to know. A Man of God gave me the perfect prescription of how a man should lead a Christian life."—Pat SummerallSportscaster, Broadcaster

"Jack Graham knows what it takes to be a strong and sturdy man—partially because he is one himself and partially because he leads so many men through his phenomenal ministry at Prestonwood Baptist Church. He writes with a sense of what men want to hear, and this often includes illustrations from athletics, business, and the world of competition. No man reading this book will miss its central point: A great life for a man will involve a deep and disciplined commitment to Christ."—Neil Clark WarrenPsychologist and Founder of eHarmony.com ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Graham is a Man of God
Fight The Good FightHaving been a member of Prestonwood Baptist Church and sat under the ministry of Dr. Jack Graham for four years, I believe that he is truly a man of God. A great leader who has served as the President of the Southern Baptist Convention for two terms. My wife and I have purchased this book to give to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Instruction Book For Men!
This book is must reading for every man! It speaks of our relationship with God and how that relationship is carried over to that with our wives, children, employers, etc. Guys, God expects certain things from us. I encourage all men to read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best buy on essentials for every man's life...
I couldn't be happier with the purchase of this book. It is by far one of the best sources on godly living for men. His style is personal, yet powerful. And just in time for Father's Day, it has inspired me to include all the essential priorities listed by Dr. Graham into my own life and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars No-joke book on the essentials for the Christian man
This book is more than your average book. It covers topics that every man wants to know more about. It digs deeps into Scripture and offers Christian men the basic essentials to living sold-out to God. I couldn't be happier with this book. On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the highest), I give it a 12.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading
Jack Graham is pastor of the massive Prestonwood Baptist Church which boasts a membership of over 23,000 and is thus one of the world's largest churches. He has written several books, the latest of which is A Man of God (which releases today). To provide a clear idea of the target audience for this book, one does not need to look much farther than the list of endorsers. The list includes Roger Staubach, Gary Carter and Pat Summerall. Neil Clark Warren (founder of the online dating site eHarmony.com) is added for good measure. And Chuck Norris enters the fray to write the foreward. And if you still aren't sure, perhaps this quote will bring added clarity. "The Christian life is more important than the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA Finals, and the Stanley Cup all wrapped together" (page 12).

This book is obviously intended for the American "everyman" - the average guy with average interests who attends the average church. Graham intends this book to be a wake-up call. He tells us early-on that he has always firmly believed that "if revival was to come to the church, and if the Good News of Jesus Christ was to spread to the nations, it would be because men became godly and began living their faith with passion and integrity" (page 13). He seeks to encourage men to step up to the challenges offered to the faith in the twenty-first century and accept responsibility for the church.

The book is divided into four roughly-equal sections, each containing three chapters. The first, "A Man of God and His Master" challenges men to know, understand and commit to God. Graham teaches that men need to commit to maximum discipleship - discipleship that impacts the whole life. The second section, "A Man of God and His Integrity" challenges men to live upright lives marked by moral purity and free from captivity to temporal possessions. The third section, "A Man of God and His Family" speaks of the importance of prioritzing family relationships. The final section, "A Man of God and His Ministry" challenges men about in the areas of mentorship and evangelism.

The book is written in a conversational tone and is simple both to read and understand. Stories and examples abound. Scripture examples and proof-texts are also in abundant supply.

There were a couple of small theological issues I found with the book, but I can see that these arose because of my Reformed understanding of salvation. On page 201 Graham writes, "People are incredibly interested in something that will fill the void in their hearts." While this may be true, in no way does this indicate, as he seems to indicate, that unbelievers are genuinelly and spiritually interested in the gospel. But beyond such minor concerns, I found the book quite Scriptural.

I am not convinced that Graham says very much in this book that has not been said before by other authors. In fact, there are probably quite literally one hundred books that deal with this same topic in a similar way. However, judging by the churches of today it seems that plenty of men have still not accepted the challenge, so perhaps this book can serve to wake a few more from their spiritual slumber. If a man in your life is not a reader, and has not already read several similar titles, this may be the type of book that will challenge and motivate him. It is certainly more biblical and more challenging than Wild at Heart and so many others. ... Read more
