Product Description

Once a common feature of most small towns and settlements, the village mill has all but disappeared over the past 100 years or so. This is a unique photographic record of our towns and villages and of what was once the major industry in each settlement. The illustrations within will appeal to locals and industrial historians alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful old-time memoir
I first read this book when I was a little kid and I read it again 20 years later. I loved it! Pat O'Brien was a charming man and a product of his time. Although his recollections as a successful Hollywood character actor are old-fashioned by today's standards, it's still fun to read what "old Hollywood" was like in his eyes. He made his debut in the 1931 film, "The Front Page" and he was a very popular actor throughout the 1930's and 1940's. He enjoyed working in "pre-Hays code" films with actresses like Carol Lombard and Jean Harlow. O'Brien was blacklisted in the 1950's and didn't work much during that decade. He doesn't say WHY he was blacklisted--but I've read elsewhere that his political views were extremely right wing. Regardless, his memoir is gentle and kind and great escapist entertainment. Anyone interested in the Golden Era of Hollywood should read this book. I love his description of what life was like in a rented Malibu mansion overlooking the Pacific Ocean in the early 1930's--complete with Sunday afternoon barbeques in the backyard, attended by his co-workers at Warner Bros. It made me wish I could hop into a time machine and go back to that time and place. Pat knew all the greats--Spencer Tracy, Marion Davies, Bette Davis and so many more. He was a proud Irish-American and a very talented actor. AMC frequently shows his vintage films from the 1930's. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Erotic House Play
I really enjoyed this book, enough to pass it on to my husband. The story evolves into an erotic who's next.I found it touched my romantic heart, with terrific sexual pleasures, as well as the awakening of a woman to life.I enjoyed the new discoveries that were played out, as if I too were experiencing them.I recommend this to any who enjoy the fantasy of opening yourself to new adventures.

4-0 out of 5 stars You will believe a computer programmer could get you hot!
I don't think "A Reader from Iowa" can actually have read this book. The couple do not meet over the Internet - they meet when Rupe, the gorgeous sytems analyst (I know, it looks like an oxymoron), moves into oneof the rooms advertised for rent by Tine, widow of a prominent artist.AndTine, at least, knows who she's cybering with - some of the time: I willadmit there's a twist in the tail.I enjoyed this book. Before theerotica kicks in there is actually quite a moving portrayal of Tine'sefforts to get on with her life which is good writing in any genre.Thereare great food scenes. There's a sub-plot about stolen art, and someinteresting, sexy characters doing interesting, sexy things. This was nothalf bad.And if you weren't convinced that cybersex is "real"sex, this book might just make you reconsider.
