Product Description
This informative and engaging book chronicles Lucy Lawless's journey from a budding opera singer to the surprising story of her landing the role of Xena. The book also tells the story of Reneé O'Connor, the blond-haired Texan who plays Xena's storytelling sidekick, and the undying support of Reneé's mother, who helped garner a fan base for her daughter that rivals Lucy's. Focusing on the unprecedented fan phenomenon that surrounds this highly inventive show, this book features a guide to various Xena Internet web sites, fan clubs, and e-mail listserves, including interviews with many of the fans who run them. It also includes reports by fans about the infamous subtext issue that has lured in the biggest single fan demographic, experiences of seeing Lucy in the Broadway production of Grease! in fall 1997, and why they love or hate Joxer. Also featured is a detailed episode guide. Using the show's references to various ancient myths, Stafford offers a historical background and analysis of each episode to enrich viewers' experience of each episode. Featuring a 16-page color photo section, exclusive photos from conventions, appearances, and autograph signings, and original illustrations, this is a fascinating book that Xena fans won't want to miss. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible insight into Xena fandom
I was one of the people Nikki Stafford interviewed for this book.Sadly, the fan survey she conducted had to be cut from the final version, but a great deal of information was still included.Nikki's research into the show, its stars, and the fans who built an international community around Xena: Warrior Princess in the early years is unsurpassed.

Some other books have since come out which seemed to me to be nothing more than blatant attempts to capitalize on the success of one of the most popular syndicated television shows in history. This book always struck me as something different. But maybe that's just because the author took the time to see what the fans thought and cared about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic critical guide to all episodes...
One thing in this book that stands out from the others is that Nikki bothered to comment on the different episodes. This is better than the official book!! I like the way that there is a personal voice in thecomments, and the way that the author dared to criticse it, and add somesuggestions as well. Brilliant work!!

5-0 out of 5 stars i loved it.
this book is great.it has every thing you need to know about xena.it has a chapter on the broodway production of grease that lucy was in.what lucy and renee were like as kids.it also has two or three pages of comics.if youlove xena you'll live this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comphrehensive guide to the Xenaverse
This book is the best Xena book I have read, maybe even better than the official one. It contains their biographies and a complete script of one of Lucy and Renee's conventions. It also lists the most websites and groups. The episode guide was very informative. It contained some mistakes that theauthor found with the show. This book is worth every cent!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any Xena and Lucy Fan!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was very informative and by most accountants accurate. I would suggest this book to any Xenite! :) BATTLE ON!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Characters...plot a little lacking
I wouldn't say this was the worst book I ever read but it is by far from a favorite! I liked the characters but I thought the story could have moved a little faster. The characters were very heartfelt and enduring. But on the other hand some of the characters like Beth and Melissa were left hanging...what happened to the twisted duo? Does Kay ever return to her aunt and cousins to show them that she is happy and rub it in at any point? Does the Wilde vet office become a success? These are just a few questions that could have been dealt with in my oppinion. I thought that this book was a slow read...just didn't keep me thinking that I had to read one more page...No really just one more and I'll put it down! I knew I wanted to finish it but just barely

5-0 out of 5 stars This Reader Is Thankful for Carrie Carr
Most books in this genre, or any romance genre for that matter, depict two lovers who are independently wealthy, mysterious, perfect 10s.This reader enthusiastically applauds Carrie Carr's courage in introducing two characters who challenge the basic mold.

Veterinarian Randi Meyers is overweight, heavily dependent on her miserable job, has bad knees, and furnishes her home with garage sale specials. She meets the even more miserable Kay Newcombe.Kay lives in a rented home, far away from her patheticly nosy and controlling aunt and cousin. She has broken her leg, seemingly has no insurance, has no car, and is ostracized at her new job because she's gay. Both women have insane ex-girlfriends who cheated on them.Randi's ex wiped her out, and Kay's ex gets physical in her attempts to regain their relationship.

In spite of it all, Randi and Kay find themselves falling in love. They take their fledgling relationship very slow.In fact, I've never known anyone who was capable of easing into a relationship this slowly. It's almost inhuman... almost unbelievable, but it works.

All in all, I thought this book was great. This is a basic feel-good story that follows the general, successful recipe of the genre. The characters are more than likable, they're real.Randi and Kay have many characteristics that remind me of friends over the years. They struggle with many of the same things we all face every day.

I first read this book about two years ago, just read it again, and highly recommend it.Get ready to curl up with a thick milkshake and a sloppy burger while you read this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars charming romance with very dear characters
True to life characters that aren't the same drop dead gorgeous women you have in many novels. If you are looking for superficial people don't read this novel. The main characters are so strong in face of many of life's day to day struggles that I admired them tremendously.Like one reviewer said you can't help but root for the main characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing! Heartwarming! A Must Read!
Home, after a long time away, veterinarian Randi Meyers is attending the funeral of a distant relative when she is begged by a young boy to help his sister.Kay Newcombe, the young boy's sister, has injured herself while on a walk through the woods. When Randi turns to thank the young boy, he's nowhere to be found.Where did he go? And why? What mysterious circumstances surround his disappearance?

Kay, with her leg now in a cast, is unable to work. Randi, who feels an unexplainable need to help Kay, takes her back with her to stay at her apartment. What is it about Kay that is attracting Randi? Both women, burned by ex-lovers, nevertheless begin to form an easy friendship. Easy that is, until one of their ex's decides to make an appearance? Whose ex has showed up? Why now?Do they pose a threat? If so, how far will they go to win? Will this keep a friendship from possibly turning into something more?

When Randi makes a "house call" for a dog too injured to travel, she is fired from her job. The dog's owner finds this out and promises she will make it right. How? And why was Randi's boss so upset over the house call to begin with?

Carrie Carr is a terrific writer, displaying that fact in her earlier books, Destiny's Bridge, Faith's Crossing, Hope's Path, Love's Journey, and Strength of the Heart. She again proves right on target with a new heartwarming book of two unlikely women who meet under dire circumstances, form a friendship and face all life has to throw at them, together.Something to Be Thankful For is a book more than capable of standing on its own!

3-0 out of 5 stars Deb
It was okay.It was too predictable. There weren't any suspense in the book.I also didn't care for the romance because one of the main characters wasn't very appealing, she was weak and unattractive. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Romance in a difficult place
Piperton, Texas is a hard scrabble town that is slowly dying. It's ironic that the most impressive building in the deserted downtown is the old courthouse because there is little justice in this town if you're different.Sam Hendrickson didn't plan on stopping there, but her old car finally dies and Sam finds herself trapped in the town until she can raise some money.Unfortunately, with her short haircut and androgynous dress, she sticks out like a sore thumb and she has to deal with bigoted attitudes from the first moment. As she picks up a string of odd jobs, all she wants to do is get enough money to leave this place behind. Then she meets Janie Clark.Janie has lived in Piperton all her life and all she knows is the culture there. Her job in a doctor's office really isn't fulfilling, but the biggest problem is that her father is trying to force her to marry a man she doesn't love. That seems to be what women in Piperton do.Meeting Sam causes her to reassess her life, appearance and attitudes. As they grow closer there is also a growing sense of danger, especially after Sam endures a vicious beating.Staying in Piperton could cost them their lives, but Sam won't leave without Janie and Janie would have to reject everything and everyone she has always lived with. That's a lot to ask of someone who has never taken a risk before.

Piperton reminds us that not everyone lives in the same society, not even within the same country.People sometimes forget that, hidden within tiny enclaves, there are values and attitudes surviving quite well as the rest of time passes them by.The cover art on this book is especially evocative of that reality. The atmosphere in this town is more reminiscent of the 1950s than the 21st century except that these ideas can still be found existing. The characters are quite real though and the story drives the reader on as you want to find out how Sam and Janie cope with the situation.Their relationship develops a little too fast and Janie's transformation seems too easily accomplished, but Carr tells a story that is on the whole convincing. One of the best characters is an older woman named Betsy who not only provides Sam with shelter and support, but injects the humor into the story that keeps it from becoming totally depressing.

Piperton is easy to read and has an absorbing story, but it also emphasizes for the reader an important truth. In a time when people are loudly proclaiming that all gay people should be out and proud, sometimes the smartest move on a battlefield is a strategic retreat....or at least a change of location.

Her association with Dar begins in disbelief, hatred, and disappointment, but when Dar unexpectedly hires Kerry as her work assistant, the dynamics of their relationship change. Over time, a bond begins to form. But can Dar overcome years of habit and conditioning to open herself up to the uncertainty of love? And will Kerry escape from the clutches of her powerful father in order to live a better life? The answer to both questions is no - unless these two women can strengthen and cement the tenuous bond that forms between them. First they must face storms that neither expects . . . and live to tell the tale.

3-0 out of 5 stars Huge potential but frustrating
There is so much to love about this novel and it gets you from the start. Steamy actress meets steamy actress and lots of unresolved sexual tension ensues. It's wonderful how the author has drawn the audience into her world. BUT: my number one frustration with the book, which overshadows everything else is that virtually all tension comes from childish spats and immaturity between the characters; which is then ALWAYS resolved only when one character is physically hurt or perceived to be hurt. I would buy that happening once (oh no x is hurt, forget our fight, rush to her side, admit how you feel) but EVERY time?! And the childish carry-on of the lead character (nasty digs at her lover and ridiculously wrong assumptions without ever once checking) is hugely irritating. She acts 14! This novel frustrates the heck out of me because it could have, should have been so amazing, if only the plot twists weren't contigent on injuries leading to resolutions each time. I look forward to reading more from the author and hope that she's got the anger/hurt/comfort/love cycle out of her system once and for all with this one. Sooo much potential there.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Just Marvelous!
If you like a book that keeps you entranced -- this is it.

The story is engaging and vibrant without dragging the reader through a bombardment of needless props and scenes. The author is cunning enough to transport the reader into the story and making them feel as though they were part of the characters. This story brings out the true meaning of love--encompassing friends, siblings, parents and mates.

What can possibly be the best accolade to give an author than to tell them that they have created a wonderful story! This book is just marvelous. One of my life's joys is reading and this story has rewarded my indulgence.I have read it twice and am looking forward to a third.

The only regret is that the author has not written another book.I am certain that I am not alone in saying that I am anxiously waiting for a new story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read
