Excerpt: Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy (February 22, 1932 August 25, 2009) was a United States Senator from Massachusetts and a member of the Democratic Party. First elected to the U.S. Senate in November 1962, he was re-elected nine times and served for 47 years until his death. He was the second most senior member of the Senate when he died and is the fourth-longest-serving senator in U.S. history. For many years the most prominent living member of the Kennedy family, he was the last surviving son of Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., the youngest brother of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, both victims of assassination, and Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., killed in action in World War II; and the father of Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy. Kennedy entered the Senate in a 1962 special election to fill the seat once held by his brother John. He was elected to a full six-year term in 1964 and was reelected seven more times. The 1969 Chappaquiddick incident resulted in the death of automobile passenger Mary Jo Kopechne; Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, and the incident significantly damaged his chances of ever becoming President of the United States. His one attempt, in the 1980 U.S. presidential election, resulted in a pri...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=184136 ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great for stampers, not so much for journals
Visually pleasing and a very pretty book with some excellent ideas, but it doesn't provide inspiration for a journal project. This book demonstrates lots of fun and memorable stamped items and small projects: invitations, notes, collages, etc. If you are primarily interested in something journal-related, I would recommend looking this one over at your local library first, before making a purchase of it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just another paste and stamp journaling book
No revolution for me by others review I thought that it would be great. No real creativity just another paste and stamp journaling book. If you are just starting into journaling and wern't real creative it may give you some good ideas. I will pass this book on to someone new to journaling.

4-0 out of 5 stars I was hoping for more
This isn't a terrible book, but as an artist, I was hoping for something a little more personal than a picture pasted on a page with a couple of lines of stamped or typed text.To me that's not journaling, that's captioning a picture.

I feel like this book is best suited for someone new to the field or with truly limited means of artistic expression. This book doesn't explore any new ground. It'd probably make a good gift for a teen or a friend who was new to the concept of art journaling, but I'd give it a pass otherwise. You can find better resources for these same techniques on youtube or with a google search without spending a dime.

5-0 out of 5 stars For getting UNSTUCK, return to the basics
I have to preface this review by saying that I was an architect by trade and education, though the economy saw to THAT career choice, and as such, I spent many, many years leaning toward perfection. That is to say, every drawing, every bit of lettering, every line had to be as close to perfect as possible.

In the early 90s, everyone switched from hand drawing, hand rendering, hand lettering, to compterized. While we all mastered autocad, photoshop, illustrator and such programs, we never noticed we were losing our ability to be free and sloppy and random.

So, several years later, I'm now a nurse, but that's beside the point, I am finding myself drawn to the "human" stuff in art work. The uneasy, uneven scrawled lettering, the crooked lines, there's beauty there.Just as now I see the human side of things far more (being at the bedside, perhaps, rather than being sequestered behind a drafting table or computer) I have learned to like this hand-made look.

This book reminded me of the sort of stuff kids can so easily do, that we adults have long forgotten--how to have FUN with the media.Whether you're cutting paper and gluing it on the page, or applying paint with a big brush or a sponge, or coloring with crayons, this book reminds you to above all, have fun, experiment and let loose.

My striving for perfection was a dragon to be slayed. My pages were so neat, my brushwork so caligraphy-like, my papers trimmed so perfectly--I was all pent up and unable to begin or to finish or to even SEE what I wanted to do.

My art journal is very different than my travel sketch book, or my professional portfolio, my digital renderings or drafting work.My art journal is full of exploration and experiments and as a result, it's very interesting. It's also been very theraputic in knowing what I really think about things, and what I want to do.

I have Linda and her sister to thank for loosening me up.
I'm looking forward to many more of their books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary journaling!
Journal Revolution changed how I journal! I am so excited to use the techniques and bright colors in this book. This book shows you how to journal about whatever emotions you have and how to use colors, different techniques and different surfaces to make your journaling really convey your personality and feelings.Everything in this book still is doable by anyone. You do not have to have fancy supplies or an art degree. That's the best part. My art really does look like ME, and I have learned so many fun ways to make art journaled pages or canvas. Great book! ... Read more

Product Description

What would you write if no one knew who you were? In the spirit of the demolition derby, where drivers take heedless risks with reckless abandon, welcome to the first convocation of the Secret Society of Demolition Writers. Here is a one-of-a-kind collection by famous authors writing anonymously--and dangerously. With the usual concerns about reputations and renowned cast aside, these twelve daredevils have each contributed an extreme, no-holds-barred unsigned story, each shining as brightly and urgently as hazard lights.

Customer Reviews (4)

1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste!
The authors were very wise to retain their anonymity. This at least leaves some room for speculation about the specific parentage of the worst stories - in a body of work that was bad to mediocre at best. The concept may have sounded great - but the end result was a total disappointment at every level.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Concept but a Lot of Very Average Stories Within
Marc Parent has edited a collection that is an interesting and unique concept where authors have presented stories to be published that are not in their usual style. So as to avoid public expectations and criticism from hard core fans who are only satisfied with reading more or less the same thing over and over again they have kept their anonymity by not saying which of them wrote which story.Criticism of authors not producing the same old same old certainly does happen. Just read some of the tunnel vision reviews from some Harlan Coben fans of a non Myron Bolitair novels, Alex Cross fans of James Patterson novels, Dr Alan Gregory fans of Stephen White novels and even one of the authors in this collection Michael Connelly when he writes something that doesn't have Harry Bosch is often heavily criticised. So you can understand why being able to submit work in this format of the Secret Society of Demolition Writers would appeal so much to authors.

The problem for Marc Parent is that other than Connelly, Parent has really struggled to come up with anyone else that the casual reader is likely to have come across before, so therefore the whole purpose of the book really means nothing. Also the quality of some of these stories is pretty poor with not really anything happening in a few of stories meaning it is more likely some authors have just submitted work that was rejected by their publishers or they would be ashamed to put their name on.The other problem relates to the good stories like The Safe Man and Good Sport. You have no way of knowing who the author was to check out and enjoy more of their work in the future.

Overall this is a very average collection with only a few good stories. The concept is great and should be tried again, but you need more famous authors and you still need to stick to the traditional editing concept of the rejection of average stories.

2-0 out of 5 stars the secret society of demolition writers
I was dissappointed. Many of the stories were based around sexually explicit themes. I was looking for something more imaginative than that from these authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars We wined, dined and discussed.
My book club recently had the pleasure of discussing this fabulous collection of short stories edited by writer, Marc Parent. When he presented such famous writers as Anna Quindlen, Sebastian Junger, Aimee Bender and others with the opportunity to write anonomously and "dangerously" they jumped at the opportunity. We not only enjoyed reading and discussing the intriguing and sometimes odd stories; we also took great pleasure in being detectives by trying to figure out who wrote what. It gave us twice the enjoyment for our money.I would highly recommend this for indivivual enrichment or book club discussion. ... Read more
