4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling profile of a strong, mysterious female figure
This books seems to get far less circulation than it deserves. No matter your opinion on Yoko, John Lennon and Beatle fan-readers alike should pick this up.I also found this a great case-study of a powerful female figure and how her public image was resculpted by the public and media through the mere events of her life (her public image drastically changed with her life circumstance: forming a relationship with a married man to the break-up of the beatles to motherhood and finally to widow).

Its a refreshing approach to this very over-hyped, exaggerated, demonized figure.Instead of fitting Yoko into a box, or characterizing her in a particular vein, the author shows through interview research, family biographical info, and rarely reported insider anecdotes how she could be at once vindictive and loving, emotional and detached, honest and furtive, controlling and trampled. There is no ONE clear-cut, 300 page synopsis of Yoko because she is as complex as any of us.In the end, the author refrains from a neat characterization or wrap-up, in favor of painting as complexly mysterious portrait as Yoko's own public image.

For those thirsty for more information about the personal lives of Lennon or the Beatles, this book will be chalk full of new details to savor.

4-0 out of 5 stars A balanced, well written biography
I just finished reading this unauthorized biography about Yoko Ono. I found it to be an enjoyable, easy read.

There are few biographies specifically about Yoko, and some of the material out there is annoying to read (such as Woman) or mention Yoko in passing as part of a bioigraphy about her famous husband, Lennon (such as the Goldman trash book). This book is devoted entirely to Yoko, although the second half mentions Lennon quite a bit.

Unlike some books which are clearly vindictive, this seems to be a rather balanced, impartial book, although it does portray Yoko as self centered, bossy and overly driven to succeed. This is my favorite book about Yoko and one of my favorite biographies in general.

The only negative points I feel worth mentioning is that there are very few photographs, and the ending of the book (if you can call it that) leaves the reader hanging in mid air.The book does not really have a summation or conclusion. It just ends. If the ending were better, I probably would have given this book 5 stars. ... Read more

Product Description
From the earliest days of her career, Yoko Ono has found practical solutions for dismantling the walls that art throws up around its objects. Her Cut Piece of 1964, reprised in 2003 (and documented herein), remains an ever-relevant act of role reversal and vulnerability. Touch Me is a suite of sculptural works that are activated and completed by the tactile participation of the viewer, with the same conceptual simplicity that characterizes so much of Ono's activity. "Touch Me I," for example, utilizes a sheet of fabric with numerous apertures, through which viewers are encouraged to peer, insert or reveal a body part, photograph it and add the Polaroid to a wall of similar contributions. This book documents these playfully interactive works, as well as other new and historical works by the artist. But--unlike so many books on performance-oriented art, which merely document--it is also a beautifully composed bookwork, reproducing Ono's classic instructions for the execution of her works alongside photographs and comments on the hopes and fears of her art in the present political climate. ... Product Description
In his 1962 book The Gutenberg Galaxy, Marshall McLuhan wrote the famous words: "The new electronic interdependence recreates the world in the image of a global village." As predicted by the renowned Canadian media theorist, satellite telecommunications, beginning with the first Sputnik launch in 1957, united humanity under a vast "cosmic membrane." An immense web of waves echo information around the planet, and distance and time are abolished. Dreams, upheavals, trends, and conflicts are now experienced on a global scale. Global Village: The 1960s plumbs the depths of those planetary echoes as they resonated throughout the decade in the fields of visual arts, decorative arts, fashion, and architecture. Along with a wealth of images, it contains interviews with diverse key figures of the time, including designer Ettore Sottsass, art critic Arthur Danto, artist Yoko Ono, filmmaker Agnès Varda, curator Okwui Enwezor, writer Tobias Wolff, playwright Michel Tremblay, and artist Carolee Schneeman.

Edited by Stéphane Aquin.~Essays by Anna Detheridgede and Derrick de Kerckhove.~Interviews withAlan L. Bean, Arthur C. Danto, Okwui Enwezor, Yoko Ono, Carolee Schneemann, Ettore Sottsass, Bert Stern, Agnés Varda, Michael J. Watts, Tobias Wolff, et al.

Product Description
John Lennon was not only a musician, he was also an artist of many talents who wrote short stories and nonsense texts, and created drawings and photographs. Though he studied at the Liverpool Art Institiute from 1957 to 1960, it was his music that brought him international fame. In this volume, Lennon's other creative output is published. The book includes his drawings and lithographs, including erotic works from the controversial "Bag One" portfolio, his photographs, lyrics and prose, his record sleeve designs, first editions of his books, and documentary material on the posters and performances. ...
