Product Description
Sentiment and Celebrity tells the story of a man the New York Times once called "the most talked-about author in America." A widely admired, if controversial, master of the sentimental appeal, poet and "magazinist" Nathaniel Parker Willis (1806-1867) was a pioneer in the modern business of celebrity. By charting the shape and thrust of the various controversies that surrounded Willis, this book shows how the cultural and commercial impulses that fostered the development of antebellum America's love affair with fame and fashion drew power and sustenance from the concurrent allure of genteel cultivation and sentiment. ... Nat Willis-- a man of his times, a man for our time? I loved this roguish tale! Baker has slavishly peeled away layer upon layer of this mostAmerican onion, this slice of the American pie, this antibellum antiherowhose antics and excesses are still a hoot in our 'modern' society.Couldn't put it down. Expensive, though-- and too bad the pictures weren'tbigger. ... Read more

Critics and general readers highly regarded the poetry and prose of Nathaniel Parker Willis (1806 1867) during the American Renaissance of creative literature in the decades before the Civil War. Willis includes a general introduction and many short essays describing literary and historical contexts that provide information for the modern reader. Product Description
A stunning glimpse of the natural beauty of the landscapes and sights of seventeenth century Ireland.

Originally published circa 1842, this book is the result of collaboration between writer Joseph Stirling Coyne and engraver William Henry Bartlett. The first section has a collection of landscapes: wooded gorges, crashing waterfalls, wind-swept seashores, dramatic mountain scenery, and views of towns and villages. Coyne emphasizes his reverence for nature—the ‘picturesque,’ the ‘wild and sublime,’ and the ‘romantic beauty’ of the landscape, highlighting how the scenery inspired generations of artists and writers. The second section concentrates on the ancient ruins, churches, monuments, and castles and stone circles of Ireland.

The various regions of Ireland are described as they appeared at the time of the author’s travels. Coyne’s short history of each town or region visited combined with William Henry Bartlett artistic skill allows readers to experience the natural beauty of the period. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A reflection of the Romantic era
Engagingly written by J. Stirling Coyne and illustrated by the drawings of W. H. Bartlett, The Scenery And Antiquities Of Ireland was first published in 1842, just a few years before the Great Potato Famine of 1845-1850. Originally presented in two volumes (both of which are combined under one cover in this newly published edition), The Scenery And Antiquities Of Ireland combines astonishingly detailed engravings of landscape and natural scenery, villages, ancient ruins, churches, and more. The detailed text describes assorted regions of Ireland as they appeared during the era of the author's sojourn. A reflection of the Romantic era, with its emphasis of idealism and nostalgia for the past as well as the captivating importance of natural beauty, The Scenery And Antiquities Of Ireland is just as informative and impressive as an armchair traveler tour-de-force today as it was over 150 years ago, and a very highly recommended contribution to Irish Studies, Irish History, Irish Culture, or Irish Travel reading lists and reference collections. ...
