5-0 out of 5 stars Grandma Doralee Patinkin's Holiday Cookbook: A Jewish Family's celebrations
Great cookbook,Lots of good recipes, and the comments by Mandy Patinkin are very good, and the paperback cover makes it easy to handle. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a treasure!
What a wonderful book.Recipes just like the ones I grew up with.I even gave them as holiday gifts.Books like these remind us that family memories follow us through our lives in our minds as well as at the dinner table and that we should gather these dishes in writing and hold them dear. This book is a treasure.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing Flavor
I made a few dishes for passover, a lot of the recipes are missing flavor. Some recipes do not have clear instructions, Roasted Chicken has instructions to bake instead of roasting.I am Jewish and my grandma's dishes are way better then Grandma Doralee's dishes, except my grandma cannot seem to give me recipes because she does not measure anything, so every time I follow her directions, the dish turns into a mess.I also did not like that 12 pages of the book are reviews and praises from other people. The book is small as it is, I don't need to spend money on praises.I would not recommend this book.I have to say one thing, her chicken soup is good, but how can you mess that up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the best!
Doralee Patinkin's cookbooks are two of my all-time favorites(and I'm not Jewish, so they should appeal to everyone with taste buds).Every recipe I've tried has been absolutely wonderful.Directions are clear, and each recipe is preceded by a brief description of why it is a favorite. The forward is by actor Mandy Patinkin, and the comments about some recipes include his passion for him. These books are very warmly written, and filled with tried-and-true family favorites which will be just as successful in the readers's homes.Absolutely wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars More than one reason to own a cookbook...
I tend to collect cookbooks that are fun to read, have interesting graphics, and have recipes that don't require days to prepare. This book is one of them. In addition, in the introduction, Mandy Patinkin (the author'sson) writes: "Please try some of my ma's holiday treats and share someof my memories." Who could resist? Not me! ... Read more

With an introduction by Mandy Patinkin, this delightful and down-to-earth cookbook brings together three generations, one extraordinary mom, and more than 150 irresistible ways to bring tradition and love to the family table.Amazon.com Review
Actor and singer Mandy Patinkin wanted his mother to recordher recipes to preserve them for the family, but happily for all ofus, she turned them into a cookbook everyone can share. It is a joyhaving this intimate view of the enthusiastic palates and the quirkyculinary treasures prized by this food-loving family, through over 150recipes passed along from grandparents, aunts, cousins, andfriends. It is also an intriguing window into the way Jewish Americansate in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s, when garlic was an exotic, gourmetingredient.

All the expected and familiar Jewish dishes are here, such as cheese blintzes, egg-rich noodle puddings, dense choppedliver, chicken soup, even a homemade version of lox.But the Patinkinfamily is full of adventurous eaters and creative cooks, so you alsofind Rack of Lamb elegantly marinated with red sweet peppers, portwine, honey, mustard, and rosemary and a creamy coleslaw tangy withchampagne vinegar.

Emphatic flavors make the recipes in this bookdistinctive. Grandma Patinkin punches up her egg salad with chilisauce. She rubs garlic powder on her roast filet mignon, and also putsit in her matzo balls. And she loves curry powder, so it shows up notonly in a frittata, gazpacho, and chicken salad, but also in herchicken soup. You decide if this is heaven or culinary heresy!

Grandma Doralee is a mean baker, and her Cream Cheese Brownies, withtheir rich topping, are not to be missed. Nor are her butter cookies, distinctively sweetened with brown as well as white sugar.

In sum,the Patinkin family's cooking, like Mandy's singing, is unique, bold, and delivered straight from the heart.--Dana Jacobi ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Find!
I bought this because I was looking for easy but delicious passover recipes.Doralee Patinkin Rubin really came through for me.Her apple cake and Baked Chicken a l'orange were great.I made a few other recipes and they were thoroughly enjoyed. Her recipes if not all technicallykosher come from that great tradition of Jewish women many of us werefortunate enough to have as mothers and grandmothers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like being back my grandmother's kitchen
For both traditional and modernized Jewish soul food, this book has quickly become a treasured resource. The recipies are straightforward, not pretentious or gratutuitiously glamourous, and are delicious and easy toprepare. It's traditional ethnic dishes and more, with a wonderful, friendly emphasis on entertaining and sharing events and holidays withfamilies, making food a part of the memories.

4-0 out of 5 stars If your Jewish grandma is (or was) a great cook...
this is what she would make.

Delicious, festive and family dishes that bring back memories are supplemented with new staples of the American diet, which make this an all around good cookbook for nostalgia and more. Thefood is hearty, wholesome, easy to prepare and shop for; not specialordering or trips running around town for esoteric ingredients. And likeany good grandma's recipies, emphasizes entertaining family and friendswith old favorites as well as experimentation.

I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
The author of The Power of Myth presents an illustrated companion volume to a ten-part series on public television, a discussion of the Book of Genesis by more than fifty eminent thinkers and artists. TV tie-in. Read by Bill Moyers and others. Amazon.com Review
In all honesty, when I first tuned into Genesis the PBSseries, I wasn't really in the mood to hear a cabal ofhyper-intellectual critics enlighten me with their interpretations ofan already widely familiar religious text. Within seconds of watching, however, I was completely engrossed in a conversation unlike any I'dexperienced before--lively, intelligent, generous, illuminating, exciting. If you didn't catch the series, or even if you did and youstill want more, pick up this book. It expands in places where theprogram had to be cut and is just as riveting. The commentary and the"already familiar text" prove as multidimensional and visceral aslife itself. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate interpretations
Another reviewer reports correctly that "the people in Genesis are all exposed as being very human, with fractured families." So far, so good. That is true, and it is precisely the point of all the stories in the Torah: people are human, and God has given them free will. They often make mistakes, from which mankind is supposed to learn.

But the discussions of Genesis in Moyers' book, are otherwise hopelessly inconsistent with Jewish thinking. And since Genesis is, after all, the first book in the Jewish Torah, or Five Books of Moses, it's somewhat incomprehensible that Bill Moyers would consult just one Jewish authority, Rabbi Burton Visotzky. Then again, I once heard Moyers dismiss Judaism as the product of an "angry God," which was repaired by the coming of Christ. So it's not surprising that Moyers' presents by and large extremely negative views of the Genesis stories, making all those people sound devilish.

Consider for example Moyers' take on the story of Abraham and Isaac.

According to him, God is angry and unforgiving. Moyers furthermore condemns Abraham as a mere trickster hiding "behind his wife's skirts" and resorting to cunning.

There are, however, many other rabbinical interpretations of Abraham and Isaac story in Genesis, Chapter 22. One of the best, to my mind, is offered by W. Gunther Plaut in his 1981 English-opening edition ofThe Torah: A Modern Commentary andThe Torah: Genesis.

Plaut correctly notes that the first command to Abraham "issued by Elohim---the generic term for God or gods---and the command is one that other elohim could and did make" during Abraham's era.

However, when Abraham is about to perform the sacrifice, "it is Abraham's God, Adonai, who stays his hand. In other words, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob "not only rejects the sacrifice of a son by a father, but rejects, as well, its use as a theological theme. This is in stark contrast to Eastern religions...in which a father's sacrificial gift of his son plays an important role."

Thus, Plaut concludes that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob rejected the contemporary norms of Biblical times, together with any and all acts of child sacrifice.

Plaut's interpretation makes eminent sense, whereas Moyers attempts to discredit the lessons embedded in Genesis, particularly that of Abraham and Isaac.

Whereas Moyers' constructs a vindictive, dead conversation on Genesis, Plaut genuinely reflects living Judaism.

Individual rabbinical scholars may disagree over varied interpretations of Biblical passages, for millennia Jewish sages such as Rashi and Maimonides have agreed that Torah is open to interpretation. Indeed, they encourage interpretation, teaching that the faithful should deeply question holy texts. The goal, over time: for each person to reach fuller and deeper understanding of HaShem (literally, "The Name" [of G-d]). In large measure, thus has the living, loving Jewish faith --- always in pursuit of truth, peace and justice --- evolved.

It's a terrible shame that Rabbi Visotzky allowed Moyers to get away with this nonsense.

The book has nice art work, though.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rabid, lying, paganism, RUN AMOK
Listen to Chris Wallace's closing remarks on Bill Moyers on Fox News Sunday (8/26/07) and you will understand who and what we are dealing with in Bill Moyers - a radical, pagan, left wing, bomb throwing LOON!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A true conversation
Bill is an extraordinary visionary. What a thought to bring together scholars from multiple religions to talk about Genesis. This is a must read. The conversation is insightful and enlightening. No wonder Fundamentalists dislike Bill. He is fully inclusive and working to build bridges across the chasm of beliefs. Understanding will only be built through learning conversations, not by intolerance.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was mesmerized with the audiotape
I cannot add more to the previous posts except to repeat for emphasis how very interesting it is that Jews, Christians and Muslims share this story. There is so much to contemplate and so much common ground.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminating conversation
When I watched the PBS series, I locked myself in the room each week so I wouldn't be disturbed.Imagine several bright, articulate folks who weren't arguing over the historicity of the Gensis accounts, but simply looking for their meaning. Moreover, all weren't Biblical scholars.Their ranks included novelists and playwrights who understand the narrative elements far better than I. As I watched I developed favorites who I looked forward to hearing from again and others who drove me batty.

When I bought the book, I found it to be incredibly helpful for me as a preacher to identify the questions that might be asked of the Genesis text that I would fail to ask because of my own biases or my own fear of asking a sacreligious question. The book is especially good in it's examination of the image of God and the wrestling Jacob stories, but perhaps my favorite is the discussion of call and promise, particularly because of strength of the scholars-Robert Alter, Burt Visotzky and my favorite, Lew Smedes.

This book can help us answer the questions people are really asking, instead of the ones we want them to ask.Highly recomended ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading to Grandson
The pictures and colors in this book are great. So much fun to read over and over.My grandson laughs when we read it. I remember this being told to me as a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars great illustrations for a classic rhyme
I loved this rhyme as a child and would read it over and over so I bought this to pass down to my two sons. The illustrations are great and add a fun quirky element to the book. My son's especially love to be read the page that describes all the different cheeses Jack might have in his house. They crack up laughing at the description of the different cheeses, ie stinky and gooey! My only quirk with the book is that the whole rhyme should be read with no interuptions to get the full effect and it's hard to do so when they want to stop and talk about the illustrations. After you've read it to them a few times and let them explore the pictures then you can go back and read it all in one go. This is a marvelous rhyme to share with children.

5-0 out of 5 stars house jackbuilt is great
My son has loved this book since he was 1 & 1/2 years old. We have looked everywhere for it so we were very happy to find it. He is 6 now and he still loves this book. He even reads it to his 2 yr old brother. A day don't pass that we don't read it at least once. The only thing I would change with this purchase is I wish it was hard backed but it stands up to my boys great.
