ONE FOR THE MONEY

Read by Lori Petty

Janet Evanovich made her spectacular debut with this witty and critically acclaimed crime novel. Meet Stephanie Plum of Trenton, New Jersey. She's a rookie bail bondswoman who has the awkward habit of leaping first and looking later when she's out snagging bail jumpers. It's not a job for the faint at heart, but it'stailor-made for Plum. In One for the Money, rookie Stephanie Plum may be a bit wet behind the ears, but nobody's going to take it easy on her; especially her first skip, an ex-cop and murder suspect named Morelli.Amazon.com Review
Stephanie Plum is so smart, so honest, and so funny that her narrativecharm could drive a documentary on termites. But this tough gal from NewJersey, an unemployed discount lingerie buyer, has a much more interestingstory to tell: She has to say that her Miata has been repossessed and thatshe's so poor at the moment that she just drank her last bottle of beer forbreakfast. She has to say that her only chance out of her present rut isher repugnant cousin Vinnie and his bail-bond business. She has to say thatshe blackmailed Vinnie into giving her a bail-bond recovery job worth $10,000(for a murder suspect), even though she doesn't own a gun and has neverapprehended a person in her life. And she has to say that the guy she hasto get, Joe Morelli, is the same creep who charmed away her teenagevirginity behind the pastry case in the Trenton bakery where she workedafter school.

If that hard-luck story doesn't sound compelling enough, Stephanie'sseveral unsuccessful attempts at pulling in Joe make a downright hilariousand suspenseful tale of murder and deceit. Along the way, several moreoutlandish (but unrelentingly real) characters join the story, includingBenito Ramirez, a champion boxer who seems to be following Stephanie Plumwherever she goes.

Janet Evanovich shares an authentic feel for the streets of Trenton in herdebut mystery (she developed her talents in a string of romance novelsbefore creating Ms. Plum), and her tough, frank, and funny first-personnarrator offers a winning mix of vulgarity and sensitivity. Evanovich iscertainly among the best of the new voices to emerge in the mystery fieldof the 1990s. --Patrick O'Kelley ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One worth the money
As a fan of Stephanie Plum this book definitely sets the stage for her adventures. Although Janet Evanovich writes in a way that you can read the books "out of order" but still know what's going on and the characters' relationships, One for the Money helps to put everything in order. Highly recommended!

2-0 out of 5 stars Implausible Plum
I didn't like this book. I didn't hate it by any means--I thought it was good enough--but I did not like it. The characters were kind of fun, and it was an easy read. It was also a bit of a page-turner. On the other hand, the main character was utterly and unbelievably dense. I saw nothing romantic about Joe, a guy who molested Stephanie when she was six and took her virginity at eighteen (then never talked to her again and spread rumors about it). I, personally, would probably not make-out with a child molester/player/murderer (but I guess that's just me). Also, were a known rapist and sexual torturer calling me regularly to tell me he was goingto rape me, I probably would call the police and not spend all my time alone. Stephanie Plum did the opposite, and somehow the rapist decided not to rape her on her daily early morning jog . . . alone. In short, the book had mostly implausible characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read
I really like this book I could not put it down and I started on the next right after I got done with this one I just cant wait till I get to the 3nd one...

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but not my personal favorite
This book is a perfect escape novel, a great read for cuddling up by the fire for an afternoon. That being said if you are looking for serious literature this isn't it. It was fairly graphic and if it were made into a movie it would be more in the genre of a thriller cop movie than say a Miss Marple kind of movie. Anyways, this was a fun read and entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addicting Fun!
Darn it!I found another series that I can't put down.I am not sure what I was expecting before reading this book but I can tell you that it has suspense, action, humor, and a little bit of romance.I am not going to repeat the background story as other reviewers have already covered that but it was a great read for me.I couldn't put my nook down with this book and thought I knew who the culprit was all along.I especially like Plum for being a somewhat heroine in this book albeit clumsy and inexperienced.I felt like I was right there by Plum as she set out to catch her man.I will quickly move onto the next book in the series.

P.S.Remember, this is not a literary classic here but something to read purely for entertainment purposes. ... Read more

TWO FOR THE DOUGH

Read by Lori Petty

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is back, packing a whole lot of attitude. This time around, she's on the trail of Kenny Mancuso, a boy from the working-class burg of Trenton, New Jersey, who has just shot his best friend. Fresh out of the Army and suspiciously wealthy, Mancuso's also distantly related to Joe Morelli, a vice cop with questionable ethics, a libido in permanent overdrive, and a habit of horning in on Stephanie's investigations. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun
These books are hardly high literature, but who cares? The ones I've read so far are fun, compelling, and quick. Like dessert I didn't have to make, myself.

This book has Stephanie chasing down an army vet (clues point to his serving during Gulf Storm) who shot his best friend in the knee. Of course, it goes much deeper than that, and Stephanie has to dig into all the resources she can to track him down, including Joe Morelli, her bounty hunter friend Ranger, and Grandma Mazur, who gets all the best lines. Sadly, I think Evanovich tries a little too hard with Grandma Mazur, sometimes; some of the aforementioned lines fell a little flat.

I liked the romance angle in this one much better than in the first book. I'm a lot more comfortable with Stephanie being on equal footing with Morelli, rather than being outsmarted by him every couple of chapters. They have some rather funny give-and-take in this book that made me intrigued, rather than annoyed, as in the first book. While her motives in this book were often that she couldn't accomplish what she wanted without Morelli, I got the feeling just as often that Morelli needed her, too.

It was also interesting, watching Stephanie both turn tougher and more competent and fearless, but also watching her soften. We see her distraught over the perceived loss of the ubiquitous hamster, and regressed to her teenage years by the trial of temporarily living with her parents. The priority she places on her grandmother's safety, too, is rather touching.

In short: I liked it. I'm going to read the next one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Plum book!
I recently finished the first book in the series "One for the Money" and had to quickly get the second book as I wanted to read more about Plum on her adventures.I was not disappointed as this was another great read.I just love the way Evanovich writes because I really feel like I am there with Plum.It is a great, entertaining series that I do recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two for the Dough keeps it excting!
This is the second book in the series for Janet Evanovich and she does an excellent job of keeping the action going! I love in this book how Stephanie Plum comes into herself. She is still working with her regular guys, Joe and Ranger but shows us she can handle somethings on her own. Grandma is quite a nice addition to the whole bounty hunter scene. It is so neat how she acts like Stephanie's assistant. She does kind of mess up and bumbles around to get some great clues. I loved the second book and can't wait for number three.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read

THREE TO GET DEADLY

Read by Lori Petty

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is back. The brassy babe in the powder blue Buick, has been given the unpopular task of finding Mo Bedemier, Trenton's most beloved citizen, arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, gone no-show for his court appearance. Once again, the entire One for the Money crew is in action, searching for Mo, tripping down a trail littered with dead drug dealers, leading Stephanie to suspect Mo may be in over his head.Amazon.com Review
As readers of Janet Evanovich's two previous books aboutfunny, feisty, family-tied bounty hunter Stephanie Plum already know, she operates in "the burg"--a "comfy residential chunk of Trenton, NewJersey, where houses and minds are proud to be narrow and hearts aregenerously wide open." On this turf, Plum fights for justice andfashion points--this time in pursuit of a beloved neighborhoodcandystore owner who seems to be moonlighting as an anti-drugvigilante. Evanovich now lives in New Hampshire, but authenticaffection for Trenton energizes her prose. Plums in paperback includeOne for theMoney and Two for theDough. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad
This is one of the better Stephanie Plum books. Probably because it is still mew. Still, hearing and reading about some people's sexual aberrations is very strange in a romance novel. But, the younger generations seems to take all this in their stride. ... Read more

Tank Girl's back in a new four-issue miniseries, and this time she's nastier than ever. Remember her debut in the United States? She met the devil, drank a lot of beer, and snogged a kangaroo. But that was nothing. Now she has to spend an entire week at Bell's End, the Rest Home for the Socially Retarded. And no firearms allowed! ... Read more
