5-0 out of 5 stars Reading this is cool, but SEEING IT IS BETTER!
In Chicago, last-year, my high-school's Drama and English classes had this as our semester- project...It was a blast! And we all could stop laughing! 'Penguin blues' may no longer be incirculation, but my graduating-classfrom last year is enternally GREATFUL Drama teacher had found this inbook-form from her library! Drinking sucks at any age, but to us, this playunderscores it bittersweetly through humor...we lost 3 of our class notlong before it was decided to do this one-act gig, we dedicated the show tothem. Will somebody out there PLEASE REPRINT THIS BOOK! The year that itwas published or written may notbe current, but the issues always are! Ididn't know the guy who wrote this is also Neelix on StarTrek:Voyager...Not only can the dude act, but he CAN WRITE! Read the book,do the play and then check-out the dude behind them both! Trip-OUT!Graduate from '98, Chicago, ILL

5-0 out of 5 stars a funny, thought provoking confrontation in a rehab clinic
This is the story of a voice over actor who meets a nun while they are both in alcoholic rehab. Gordon, sadistically abused by a nun in grade school, and Angelita, ashamed and in denial about her drinking, come together in a profound and surprising manner. The play is also very funny! And says some insightful and unexpected things about catholocism and booze. I think it would make a great movie; it certainly is a great play! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned the basics ofswimming using this book
I was 28 and did not know how to swim properly.I've gotten by with waving my arms and kicking.. you know, what you see in the olympics.

Picked up this book on recommendation and it clearly illustrated the strokes and gives a short history of strokes, the most impactful one being the crawl stroke. After a few weeks of re-reading the chapter of swimming and going back and forth from the gym reviewing the diagrams with what i was doing in the pool... I got the basics down.Signed up for an advanced swimmers lesson and the instructor said that I was the only one in 20 that actually belonged in the class. So they gave me special one on one instruction regarding my swimming technique.

Great start to learning to swim.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers all aspects of the swimming experience
In reading some of the complaints about this book from other reviewers, I would like to add that not all swimming books are created equal. Some are clearly devoted to technique, drills, and fine-tuning every little aspect of your athletic performance, and there are plenty of these instruction-type manuals to choose from.I tend to seek out swim books that address ALL of the aspects of the sport, the way Dr. Whitten does in this book and also Harvey Weiner does in "Total Swimming." As a swimmer who has spent many years in the pool with large gaps in-between of not swimming, I know if I turn to a book like Dr. Whitten's, the motivation to jump back in will be easily available to me.Recently this has been the case; I returned to swimming after 10 years out of the pool, and the author's statement that his book will motivate you is certainly accurate.

For those swimmers who want only to improve their performance, turn to the instruction-manual style swim books. And for all others, who don't mind some instruction/drills chapters but also like to explore the mind-body connection which occurs within the water experience, as well as learn about the health benefits research available to swimmers, there is Dr. Whitten's book.Enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars this book is worthless
The first 86 pages do nothing but tell you why you should swim. If you didn't want to swim why would you have the book to begin with? I am starting triathlons and the only reason I want to swim is to get to T1. After a few moderately useful pages explaining the basic strokes (which you can find better descriptions and pictures on the web) the rest is MORE WORTHLESS FILLER. "How swimming improves your sex life"? Common, WORTHLESS, WORTHLESS, WORTHLESS.

2-0 out of 5 stars Little about swimming, a lot about everything else
Why are swim book authors so lousy? This one is worse than the Total Immersion book. More pages are devoted to topics around swimming than swimming itself. There are chapters on health, diet, etc. etc. That's not necessarily bad, but I'd rather have a smaller, more focused book just about swim technique. In addition, the author gets carried away with love of his sport, asserting that swimming will lead to a better sex life, longevity, wealth, world peace. Well, many fitness regimes will improve your health. Buy it used and keep your expectations low.

5-0 out of 5 stars The complete book of the excitement of swimming
This book is great for getting started. If your first thought is,"do I really wanna go all the way up to the pool, get in my swimming trunks and jump into the cold wet?", just open this book and you'll already be in the water. Dr. Whitten has so much enthusiasm for the sport, that he could probably even convince a cat to take up swimming. I bet there are better books for competitive swimmers, which have more complete work-outs or are more technical, but this book gives you a bit of everything and it also explains WHY you should take up swimming. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Very complete book, just What I need, the delivery was very fast. Thank you!!

1-0 out of 5 stars So many mistakes
If you want a general introduction to J2EE, this book is ok, I suppose. Definitely not for Advanced users, as it claims. The high amount of authers shows through with inconsistant writing and often hard to understand sections. It also appears the authors didn't do much more then rewrite the Sun J2EE documentation - which is free to download.

In addition, the sheer amount of errors in both the examples and in just general formatting of the text would make me embarassed to have my name attached to it if I were one of the many authors. Things like using wrong filenames, wrong file extensions, mislabelled listings, uncompilable code, using the last line of a code example listing as the heading for the following paragrap (so the following paragraph has a heading like "", pre-production comments left in the final text, ... this is all in the first 200 pages! Definitely not a student-friendly book for someone attempting to learn the material by doing the examples.

You'll get the general idea and layout of J2EE, same as the Sun documentation, and not much else from this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacking in detail to an extreme
I've gotten as far as chapter 7 and there is next to no usable information. In less than 40 pages it attempts to cover servlets, filters, and event listeners.I regret spending the money on this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste
I read every page of this book. It was a complete waste of my time and money. I'm asking for a refund. There was no detail that helped me. While I'm not a new testament kind of guy, I expected more from a "Bible".

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't meet expectations
Isn't this book supposed to be advanced reading level? It reads like a child's book with words like "screw" and "buzzword-friendly." Plus, there's so much info to cover in J2EE that it only explains the minimum needed to get started. If you plan on reading this book, don't expect to gain substantial knowledge from it. This book is only good for one thing: to establish an introduction. The real deal is to read the specifications which are advanced reading level and written by technical writers appointed by Sun Microsystems.

Product Description

Is there one food that humans, Klingons, Bajorans, and Vulcans would like? If so, what would it taste like? How would you prepare it? Could you find all the ingredients locally?

This is the task that faces Neelix, chef for the U.S.S. Voyager™, every time he takes on the challenge of trying to feed its crew of 140 food critics. But over the course of their journey, Neelix's learned a few tricks of the trade. He had to, just as a matter of self-preservation.

Ethan Phillips, in the persona of Neelix, and William J. Birnes, the New York Times bestselling coauthor of The Day After Roswell, throw wide the vaults of interstellar haute cuisine, revealing for the first time the secret preparation techniques behind all those exotic dishes and drinks. The favorite foods of characters from every Star Trek series and movie are here, all adapted for easy use in twentieth-century kitchens. The Star Trek Cookbook also features a complete guide for whipping up the all the drinks served at Quark's.

Fun, and easy to use, the Star Trek Cookbook is your indispensable guide to the food of the stars! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars PG-13 & below
I got this book when I was around 10 or 11 & I loved it. However, as I got older the novelty wore off. This book will make a good Christmas gift for any Star Trek fan under 13 but not for people any older than that. I remember cooking stuff from this book with my Grandma & enjoying every second of it (however my Grandma didn't have the best time with it). Now I have been making stuff from this cookbook again with my nephew. I hope that he enjoys it just as much as I did.

3-0 out of 5 stars Who is the target audience?
I was given this as an anniversary present by someone who I thought loved me. I will now be sleeping with one eye open. It's not that this is a joke book, there are lots of real recipes in here. I just have no clue who the target audience is. Some recipes will take a degree of skill others are so basic I wondered where the PBJ could be found. There are also some very interesting bits on the `food stylings' from the various TV shows. Since I love film these made interesting reading and as I often found myself asking `who?' `where?' tomany of the people named I know I am saved from a cubical in geekdom

There are some good looking recipes for crab stuffed salmon, spiced baked potatoes and lemon chicken. There are some good bread ideas and a few recipes like sautéed sweetbreads, real Haggis, a Haggis Lite for those with a problem finding sheep stomachs and stuffed veal hearts that excite me. I want to try these and know an Asian market where I'll have no trouble getting exotic ingredients. Just going through their meat department you can play Dr. Porkenstien and put a whole pig back together from what they have on display. So I promise I can handle the culinary weirdness. But then things go south.

They include a virgin mint julep recipe saying they don't want to corrupt the reading youth. OK I can agree on that but later you get an earl grey tea for Picard that is spiked with Grand Marnier.

Some of the recipes require you to have kitchen toys like juicers and bread makers which you figure someone's got to have some cooking experience to have around the house and then there are recipes so simple that I think they were included just to pad the page count. For example one actor says the secret to his scrambled eggs is to add a small amount of whole milk. You think? You daring devil you! Of course only in Hollywood would this be considered a secret. In the rest of the 49.8 states of the union, this is how people do it all the time. There's a recipe for hot oatmeal. Like this couldn't be read off any package of Quaker oats.

It gets weirder. Page 137 includes a recipe for I kid you not, cat food! Freaking cat food? I do not know if this is better or worse than a recipe for oatmeal.I reread the page just to make sure it wasn't a joke or something that humans should eat. Nope this is pet food

There are recipes that look good but when you start you find they are maddeningly vague. For example on one drink you're told to add "a whole chunk of fresh ginger." How big is that? You can destroy a dish with something that potent without better directions. They give precise directions for everything else but tell you to use a `chunk' of ginger. A whole chunk, what if I only have a half chunk of ginger? In the recipe for chicken soup it doesn't tell you how much water to use. It just says half fill a large pot. How large? 6 quart? 10 quart? I got a 14 quart stock pot I make soup in. Half of that is going to create a much less flavorful soup than the guy next door using a 6 quart pot. Maybe that's why the ingredients include bullion cubes for flavor.

Which leads to my biggest gripe that many of these recipes rely on bullion for flavor. Bullion cubes? OK most people are not going to have 14 quart stock pots or demi-glace in the freezer, but if you, anyone, makes soup from scratchyou do so, so you can enjoy flavors that don't come from these hard, dry, cube shaped, salt licks. If your recipe is so weak that you need these little boosters, give it up and open a tin of Campbell's.

In the end I was left wondering who was the target audience for this? Anyone not wearing lax ear extensions? Organized by show and by character it is a confusing mess. It should have been by complexity or by style-meat, fish, bread. Without that this runs the risk of being a fan boy toy and the editor thinking of this as a cook book should have given it a serious shake down for re-organization.

Neither writer is a chef, but, they are guys who like food and wanted to share their ideas. And maybe that's the saving grace. They are people who want to share food they like with other people and that's pretty cool. I am not the target audience for this. But I can respect what they are doing and if someone else falls in love with cooking because this helps them pick up a knife that's a good thing. Oh, but the cat food recipe? That's still pretty weird.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amusing, but I kind of wanted more
I bought this book because I thought it would be funny to own and because I thought it might be fun to make a bunch of weird dishes.

Much of the book is dived up into sections for each of the characters on the different ships and those character's favorite recipes. But a lot of them just weren't that interesting, Captain Picard's Breakfast Croissant for instance. And many of the recipes are rather boring and have just been given trekkie type names.

The Klingon part is pretty great though. And some of the little interviews with special effects people and still photographs are cool. Also the drinks from Quark's Bar would be fun for a themed party.

This book is cool, but I just thought they could have done more with the concept.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really great
This is a really good gift for fans and has great recipes as well.Worth buying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift!
I bought this for a friend for Christmas who is a huge Star Trek Fan and she loved it! Would recommend for anyone who cooks and loves Sci-Fi! Overall a unique and thoughtful gift for the right person! ... Read more
