Product Description
In his life and in his music, Cole Porter was "the top"--the pinnacle of wit, sophistication, and success. His songs--"I Get a Kick Out of You," "Anything Goes," and hundreds more--were instant pop hits, and their musical and emotional depths have made them lasting standards.

William McBrien has captured the creator of these songs, whose life was not merely one of wealth and privilege. A prodigal young man, Porter found his emotional anchor in a long, loving, if sexless marriage, a relationship he repeatedly risked with a string of affairs with men. His last eighteen years were marked by physical agony but also unstinting artistic achievement, including the great Hollywood musicals High Society, Silk Stockings, and Kiss Me Kate (recently and very successfully revived on Broadway). Here, at last is a life that informs the great music and lyrics through illuminating glimpses of the hidden, complicated, private man.

Amazon.com Review
It's not quite as witty as a Porter song (who could equal theincomparable Cole?), but this thorough biography honors the Broadwaymusical's worldliest, most intelligent composer by taking himseriously.Voluminous research buttresses William McBrien's portraitof a charmed life scarred by tragedy. Born in 1891, Porter left hiswealthy family in Indiana to thoroughly enjoy himself at YaleUniversity in Connecticut, where his sassy songs gave the Midwesternoutsider social clout.Although exclusively homosexual, Porter wasnonetheless devoted to the wealthy widow he married in 1919, andMcBrien's narrative of their 1920s travels through Europe captures theglamorous sheen of their life together. Porter had some early successwith shows like Fifty Million Frenchmen, but his sustained runof hits began in 1932 with Gay Divorce, continuing through the'50s and Kiss Me Kate. The author liberally quotes fromPorter's deliciously naughty lyrics, reminding us how corny most showtunes seem when compared to "Love for Sale" or "Anything Goes."McBrien's painful account of the ghastly aftermath of a 1937 ridingaccident, which left Porter in pain that ended only with his death in1964, reveals a quiet, uncomplaining stoic whose substance matched hisdazzling style. --Wendy Smith ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of best deliveries I've had.
I had this book in my hands before I could think about it.Great Service!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars cole porter
marvelous insider info about the subject, his life, friends, and what was happening in the world that shaped his life and music.a great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of insites on Cole Porter
Well written and interesting book on an enigmatic figure.Service was fast and as promised.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.
I suppose the challenge of reading a biography is slogging through the parts of the person's life in which you have little interest. As a musical theatre performer, I was most interested in the chapters devoted to the genesis of Porter's shows - to me, these were the most interesting, and seemingly well researched. The rest of it, particularly his early life, did not quite spark my interest.I did find the ending chapters - dealing with Cole's descent into melancholy and illness - to be touching.I did gain some insight into the glamorous world of Mr. Porter's time - quite the polar opposite to the Great Depression and WWII.In the sense that I admire books that give me a glimpse into a world different from my own, I liked it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Night and Day this is the one Cole biography to read
Night and Day this is the best biography of the great Cole Porter (1891-1964). Porter was the scion of a wealthy family from Peru, Indiana. As a lad he excelled in music making and
graduated with a degree from Yale University. After a year of Law School at Harvard the travel loving Porter journeyed to Paris. He wed Linda Lee Thomas a wealthy woman several years his senior. Porter was gay and the marriage to Linda was sexless. The couple did love one another and Porter was never the same following Linda's death in 1954.
Porter wrote one fabulous musical after another for over 40 years. He lived in luxury with staff to attend his every need. He had a wide circle of friends from among the cultural and literary elite but was an aloof, fastidious, secretive man. Porter was a hard man to know and this biography is about as close as we will ever get to the inner core of the composer.
Porter was a genius in the witty line, the fetching tune and had the ability to make Broadway take notice during his fabulous career.
His life was placid but painful following his fall from a horse and the amputation of a leg. He was alcoholic and probably took durgs.
McBrien is an English professor who has written a well cratede book rich in anecdote. The book is well illustrated with photos from the Porter legacy. Several of Cole's famed lyrics are recorded to the delight of the reader.
With the new movie on Cole Porter this is a good supplement to the film. Well recommended. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars cole Porter
Aside from the fact that this book does not contain several great songs, it does not open properly on the piano making it difficult to turn the pages and keep the book open.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the Most Inclusive Selection of Songs
The songs are written for an intermediate level pianist and they are arranged nicely.I am only giving this four stars because many of Cole Porter's best-loved songs are not included. For example, there is nothing from "Anything Goes" and "Kiss Me Kate".It is disappointing that so many gems were left out.On the plus side, the biography is nice and there are some nice photos.

1-0 out of 5 stars Abridged
The songs are abridged with verses missing. Disappointing because much of the fun of Cole Porter's music is the word play.

4-0 out of 5 stars Age appropriate
It is ok for a child. I personally think teaching chords at the beginning is the better way to teach keyboard. I learned guitar by learning chords at the beginning and I feel the same method should be used for piano and keyboard.

1-0 out of 5 stars piano part only
How could you forget to say that this is only the piano part?No lyrics are included! The Best of Cole Porter without the words!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cole Porter Song Book
Grade 2/3 with nice arrangements. The only problem I have with this series of song books (I have several)is that the music is printed too close to the binding, so you have to nearly break the binding for the book to stay open when used.Wire binding and/or larger pages would be a big help.

Product Description

In 1933 Irving Berlin wrote to composer-lyricist Cole Porter, ”I am mad about Night and Day.” Millions of others throughout the world have been ”mad about” that Porter gem, as well as dozens of others, including, to name just a few, Begin the Beguine, From This Moment On, It’s De-Lovely, Just One of Those Things, Love for Sale, and My Heart Belongs to Daddy. Cole Porter (1891-1964) set new standards for popular song-writing, and his lyrics and melodies are as bright and sophisticated today as when they first dazzled audiences decades ago. Porter’s own life matched that of his songs for urbanity, wit, and elegance, and in New York, Hollywood, and on the Continent he was an arbiter of taste and fashion and part of the glamorous international set of the Twenties and Thirties. He numbered among his friends Cary Grant, Noel Coward, Fred Astaire, Ethel Merman, Elsa Maxwell, Fanny Brice, and Monty Woolley, as well as many other stars of stage, screen, or society. Cole Porter: A Biography is a delightfully written and meticulously researched book that takes us from the composer’s Indiana childhood to his celebrity days, discussing with exceptional honesty his family and friends, his wife and his many lovers, and above all, his music. Charles Schwartz’s account of Cole Porter is the most revealing, comprehensive, and objective biography to date of an extraordinarily talented and fascinating man.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is a disappointment
Considering this book is by a musician and professor of music, it contains surprisingly few insights into what was unique about Cole Porter's lyrics and music, and does little to set his work within a musical context. Fromtime to time the author embarks on embarrassing little journeys into poppsychology of the 'Was Porter's homosexuality an attempt to find asignificant father figure in his life? We may never know.' variety. Thequality of the writing is disappointing. At one point Schwartz describes ameeting between Cole Porter and Louis Mayer, the movie mogul. Schwartzdescribes Mayer as 'literally oozing with charm', or some such.Unfortunately, this is typical of the standard of writing throughout thebook. ... Read more

This is so much more than pictures of the two trips that Jean Howard took with Cole Porter and Howard Sturges after Linda Porter's death.

Jean became friends with Linda and Cole Porter in 1931.The book provides background information into their long friendship as well as clearing up a few misconceptions about Cole Poter.

Jean includes letters from the Linda and Cole Porter to her starting in 1938 and ending in 1964.

I wish I had known about this book sooner. This is a "must-buy" for anyone serious about Cole's work. What was of greatest interest to me was that all of the lyrics for Cole's 1937 "Rosalie" are included. If you want to read an alternate treatment, recommended is "Rosalie, A Storybook Operetta" with the incomparable lyrics of Cole Porter to move the romance along.

Product Description
Cole Porter possessed to a singular degree the art of expressing depth through apparent frivolity. The effervescent wit and technical bravura of his songs are matched by their unguarded revelations of feeling. In the words of editor Robert Kimball, "Porter wrote tellingly of the pain and evanescence of emotional relationships. He gentle mocked propriety and said that few things were simple or lasting or free from ambiguity." Of the masters of twentieth-century American songwriting, Porter was one of the few who wrote both music and lyrics, and, even in the absence of his melodies, his words distill an unmistakable mixture of poignancy and wit that marks him as a genius of light verse.

Selected from over eight hundred songs, here are Porter's finest flights of invention, lyrics that are an indelible part of 20th-century culture: "Let's Do It," "Love for Sale," "I Get a Kick Out of You," "Anything Goes," "In the Still of the Night," "I Concentrate on You," and dozens more.

Robert Kimball is a historian of the American musical theater whose books include The Gershwins (with Alfred Simon), Reminiscing with Sissle and Blake (with William Bolcom), Reading Lyrics (with Robert Gottlieb), and volumes devoted to the complete lyrics of Lorenz Hart, Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Frank Loesser. He is the longtime advisor to the Cole Porter Musical and Literary Property Trust, is the editor of several books on Cole Porter, including Cole and The Complete Lyrics of Cole Porter. He received a Drama Desk Award for his rediscovery of lost musical-theater manuscripts in a Secaucus, New Jersey warehouse.

Elegantly risqué, suffused with understated emotion, delightful in their bursts of comic invention, the witty and romantic lyrics of Cole Porter evoke a golden age of song. Here is the cream of half a century of songwriting, from the Jazz Age resonance of "Let's Misbehave" to such 50s classics as "Too Darn Hot" and "It's All Right With Me"-more than ninety of the most enduring works of America's master of bittersweet sophistication. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars PORTER CERTAINLY DESERVES TO BE ADDED TO THIS GREAT SERIES OF BOOKS.
Cole Porter was one of the few grand song writers who actually not only wrote the lyrics for his songs, but also the music. It is said that it is quite impossible to separate the two as they are so intricately interwoven. This well may be.I must say though, as an individual who has listen to his work being presented in various forms for years, I had never actually sat down and read his lyrics as stand alones. How interesting this was and how grateful I am that the American Poets Project was collectively wise enough to present Porter's work in this format.

Much has been written of the "Lost Generation," that band of writers who through self imposed exiles who haunted Paris after World War I.It has always rather amazed and bewildered me that in all the books; the biographies I have read covering this period, few mention Cole Porter as playing a prominent role in this movement...if you will.Yet Porter epitomized that group of men and women who changed the way we view literature, culture, music and dance forever.Porter can arguably be named as one of the most influential song writers of the 1900s.Over 800 songs are attributed to him and he had a tremendous influence on the Broadway scene as well as Hollywood.Cole's wit and I might add sophisticated life experiences shine through in his work for those who care to listen.Cole's rather jaded outlook on life was pragmatic to the extreme. His lyrics addressed love, sex, pain, anguish, joy, homosexuality, promiscuousness and so much more, while in his own dry way poked a bit of fun at the rich and famous. All this was done in an age of censorship to the extreme. His efforts, conscious or not, led the way and opened the doors for many songwriters who followed him.

This little book offers us over 90 selections and a fare representation of his total body of work. The reader will find here both the familiar and the not so familiar; dished out without the music so that the words can be savored on their own merit. It will surprise many readers, especially the young, at just how many of these songs have embedded themselves into our American; indeed, our Western Culture and psyche. After the loss of his right leg in 1958, Cole never wrote another song.He died in 1964 at the age of 73.Despite this we have artists such as U2, Deborah Harry, David Byrne and Annie Lenox along with those such as Robbie William, Sheryl Crow and Diana Krall who still have recorded his music. To be honest, if you listen closely to the score of many contemporary films, you will find Cole's finger prints all over them.

Cole led a rather fascinating life and left us a wonderful legacy via his music. His range was tremendous and his knowledge of the world and the general human condition was deep.Do yourself a real favor and get a copy of this work and set back for a few evenings and just enjoy. Not only will you be fed a wonderful dose of your musical heritage, but you will most certainly see friends, acquaintances and probably yourself peeking at you from his words.

This is a wonderful series of books and I do recommend each and every one of them.Had I the money, I would love to own them all as each and every one of them deserves multiple readings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pass Another Helping of Porter, Please!
As a child and beyond, I soaked up pop song lyrics that have remained cruelly fixed in memory and apparently ineradicable. Too often (and mysteriously) some snatch of what is most often retro and regrettable will surface. This can be highly annoying, as will be clear to those who've heard one of those appalling 1950s clunkers like "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing" and finds that it periodically and mysteriously lays siege to their consciousness. Such bizarre "Many Splendored" lyrics as, "Then your fingers touched my silent heart and taught it how to sing" may then infest one's head for days.

I thought of this assault-by-heard-music syndrome when I began to look
into "Cole Porter, selected lyrics" - compiled by Editor Robert Kimball as a 21st-century salute to the astonishingly prolific master of both music and lyrics who died in 1964 at 73. He was witty, worldly, and a magician capable of amazing feats of legerdemain, not with wand but with words and music. Why, then, hadn't even one from the rich trove of Porter compositions - uber-sophisticated, sly, knowing - wedged itself within my brain?

I'd welcome being haunted, for example, by a Porter confection such as "Why Don't We Try Staying Home?" with its gently coaxing refrain, "What if we threw a party or two, And asked only you and me?" Or the get-on-with-life-after-loss lyrics of "It's All Right With Me": "You can't know how happy I am that we met/ I'm strangely attracted to you/ There's someone I'm trying so hard to forget/ Don't you want to forget someone too?"

The only frustration of this slender volume (one in the series sponsored by the "American Poets Project") is that it is slender! Some 800 of his compositions survive, it's said. I say, "Bring on more Porter!" ... Read more

Product Description

The most romantic song ever composed --
Cole Porter's "You're the Top."...

You're the top!
You're the Colosseum,
You're the top!
You're the Louvre Museum,
You're a melody from
a symphony by Strauss,
You're a Bendel bonnet,
A Shakespeare sonnet,
You're Mickey Mouse...

These timeless, classic lyrics have been enchanting listeners since they were first performed in Porter's 1934 musical Anything Goes. Sixty-five years and thousands of renditions later, there is still no song that better says "I love you." Setting this spectacular melody to a romantic, eclectic, and unforgettable photographic stroll through New York City, You're the Top is a unique and perfect gift for that special someone for any special occasion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I rewrote the words
You're the Top is the song that I wrote my own words for. The reason is that it was my Valentine present to the woman that would eventually become my wife. I used phrases that related to our specific history and had it sung to her by the piano player who entertained at one of our favorite restaurants. There were a lot of jealous women that night and I finally got a positive answer to my proposal. It certainly is a love song all you need is the right mix of people and words. Also from Minneapolis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ah . . . but it really is terribly romantic!
I disagree!Although it was originally intended to instill laughs - this song lives on to become a great expression of love, ADMIRATION, and sheer charm. The book itself is beautiful-the images accompanied by the songlyrics capture the song's spirit amazingly well. I gave this as a gift tomy fiancé and he was delighted (we're even having the song as our 1st dancein our wedding because of it!).This book is a fantastic, unique giftideal to give to your most loved. It is a thing of beauty.

4-0 out of 5 stars not a review, response to above
THIS is NOT a romantic song. This song was sung in "Anything Goes," and it is sung by two characters who are not romantically involved, and will never be romantically involved. It is a fast beat withfunny lyrics. When I was involved in a performance of this, I found thissong (among two others) to be one of the funniest in the show.No romancehere.Just a great song. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars advanced but very good arrangements
Okay, I can't sight-read most of these the first time, but with a bit of note-dropping it was clear that these are very entertaining arrangements of great songs. I play for audiences who love this stuff and they enjoyed them as much as I did. I also learned a little more about how to bring a little variety to a tune by changing octaves, tempi etc. ...
