Product Description
Vincent Price is a true Hollywood legend, whose vast and distinguished career-as the voice of The Saint on the radio, in such unforgettable films as House of Wax and The Fly, and on the Broadway stage-spanned more than a half-century.In addition to being an icon of stage and screen large and small, Price was also an avid art collector, a gourmand, a dashing and relentless charmer, and a loving father. His daughter Victoria was born shortly before Price turned 51, at the height of his popularity.Though the star's busy film schedule took him in and out of his young daughter's life, he was always a larger-than-life presence and, simply, her father.

Victoria adored him, and despite his harrowing schedule, their relationship was close. That is, until Price married his third wife, the headstrong and independent actress, Coral Browne.Victoria was a girl of twelve, and her new stepmother resented the strong relationship between father and daughter, and consequently did much to keep the two apart.Late in Price's life, however, he and his daughter were brought together again for some of their most memorable time together.

In this elegant biography-cum-memoir, Victoria Price reveals a man both complex and human. An actor of range, he starred in both the film noir milestone Laura and the Biblical classic The Ten Commandments. As a "pre-war anti Nazi sympathizer," he was greylisted during the Red Scare of the 1950s-until, in a desperate gesture, he signed a secret oath that saved his career. And his passion for the arts gave him a second life as an erudite columnist and collector, even as his films graced drive-ins nationwide. Victoria Price's account life of her father is full and candid; both his passionate and charismatic public persona and his conflicted inner life are treated with curiosity and understanding.

Vincent Price: A Daughter's Biography is, in short, the thorough-and uniquely intimate-life of a legend.Amazon.com Review
Those who only think of Vincent Price as the deliciously evilstar of numerous horror films are in for an enjoyable surprise withVictoria Price's Vincent Price: A Daughter's Biography. Theyounger Price, through a dedicated search of clippings, letters, andher father's old journals, paints a beautifully rich portrait of a manwith personal grace, intellectual fire, and a kind heart. Pricereveals everything from odd little tidbits--Vincent was cast in hisfirst London stage production due to his gum-chewing abilities--toprofound depths, such as his lifelong love of art and his seriousreputation as a student and collector. Price also had a surprisinglygood sense of humor, indulging in genially self-deprecating jokesabout his own occasionally abysmal movies.

Though this isdefinitely a loving memoir of her father, Victoria Price is notblinded by her affection for him. She gives an earnest attempt atpresenting the whole man--fact-checking and debunking a few cherishedfamily legends and unflinchingly reporting her father's youthfulanti-Semitism. (As Price grew more worldly and met some actual Jews,he reversed his position and became an active supporter of B'nai Brithand the Jewish Anti-Defamation League.) But A Daughter'sAutobiography's may best value may be as a handbook for actors:through the numerous ups and downs of his career, Price remained aconsummate professional. He never stopped working to improve hisskills, deliberately sidestepping romantic-lead parts to take on morechallenging roles, and was unfailingly generous to his costars. Atruly engrossing look at the noble character of one of the silverscreen's greatest villains. --Ali Davis ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Two books for the Price of one!
I just finished a book called VINCENT PRICE: A DAUGHTER'S BIOGRAPHY. As you may have guessed it was written by Vincent price's daughter, Victoria, and it's about Vincent Price. It's pretty interesting too.

Victoria draws upon her own experiences with her father as well as files pulled from Vincent's personal papers after he died. So you get two books for the price of one. You get a father/daughter Lifetime type story about how they were close, then drifted apart, then became close again later in life, all against the backdrop of Hollywood from the 50's to the present. And you get plenty of cool and interesting stories about Vincent Price the Actor and all those nutty films of his.

Price was quite a Renaissance Man and an especially devoted art collector. One of his lifelong goals was to make L.A. the artistic center of America. So you also get some inside info on the L.A. art scene of the 50's thru the 90's. SOme of that's as crazy as his movies.

I don't want to list every last interesting fact or story that appears in this book, so I instead,as this book is written by Vincent's daughter from her daughterly perspective, I cobbled together a list of the TOP 10 INTERESTING ASPECTS OF HAVING VINCENT PRICE AS YOUR FATHER:

10. Sweet 16 party decorated by Roger Corman.

9. Peter Lorre always coming over to borrow sugar in his bath robe.

8. As a young child on Christmas Eve you impatiently ask your father, Vincent Price," Daddy, when is Santa coming?"...His response... Sinister bone-chilling laughter.

7."Uncle" Boris Karloff asking you to pull his finger every Thanksgiving.

6. Jokingly blames personal flatulence on "The Tingler".

5. If you think it was tough on Ben Stiller finding out his girlfriend's father was Robert DeNiro, imagine your boyfriend meeting your father, the Abomidable Dr. Phibes!

4. Sarcastically referred to his frosty, hen-pecking 3rd wife's woo-hoo as "The Tomb of Ligea".

3. You don't get the lead in the school play. Next week you drama teacher is murdered by over consumption of toy-poodle soup.(That's a toughie)

2. Drunken friends accidentily mistaking acid bath in the basement for a jacuzzi.

1. Constantly finding Bela Lugosi passed out in the laundry basket.

It's a good book, give it a read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vincent Price
This book has hundreds of details that I have never known before. It gives a deep detailed look into Price's life and career.

If you are doing a research paper on Price, you should have this book as one of your sources. It gives an over-abundance of information.

1-0 out of 5 stars A daughter's views.
I considered myself a fan of Vincent Price since I was a small child. His voice, his height, his choices of roles, I was hooked. However, after having read Victoria's account of his life, I no longer consider myself a fan.Her views on his politics were not necessary. In my opinion, the comments bordered on hate.I wish I had selected a biography written by someone other than Victoria, then I would not have been so disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous
The one thing you could always count on from Vincent Price was a good performance. Price always gave his all to whatever character he played, be it Brigham Young or Dr. Phibes, Mr. Manningham of Angel Street or Egghead of Batman. He was a professional, through and through.

This biography of Price by his lovely daughter Victoria would certainly have made Vincent proud, for it is also thoroughly professional. The author's prose is about as polished as it gets, which makes reading the book a joy. And the editing is nothing if not top notch.

The book starts with interesting information on Vincent Price's early life in St. Louis, then moves on to his college years (Price graduated from Yale), to his overseas travels, his work in London theatre, his eventual return to the United States and work on Broadway, his marriages to actress Edith Barrett (who bore him a son, Vincent Barrett Price), to designer Mary Grant (who bore him Victoria), to Vincent's work in Hollywood, to his eventual final marriage to actress Coral Browne, and much more.

We learn much about Price's great love for art and of his desire to make art affordable for everyone (which led to Price's work for Sears); of his contributions to various art galleries and his efforts to have a permanent gallery of his own (he had one, for a time, but had to close it); of his travels to exotic places around the world; of his gourmet cooking; of his love for animals; of his extensive work in film (Price made a number of horror films, but most of his work in film was not horror related), of his extensive television and stage work; of his incredible solo show as Oscar Wilde and of his many speeches; and of his relationships with many of the biggest stars of his day, many of whom became his close personal friends.

Some of the most interesting parts of the book were those in which the author wrote of Vincent's relationships with people in general. Although Price was a big star, he apparently treated everyone with the same genial kindness, be they celebrities like himself or mere street sweepers.

So as not to make him into too much of an angel, Victoria also tells of her father's occasional angry outbursts, of his affairs, and of his two divorces. She tells of his insecurities, and of his all-consuming desire to be liked.

Vincent Price has been gone for a few years now - gone but not forgotten. His work remains, as does his spirit in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.

3-0 out of 5 stars well, it's a great book but...
Victoria Price has written a book that i feel is a double edged sword toward her father. i've read it many times and prior to buying the Lucy Chase Williams book on Vincent, i'd pull out Victoria's book as a reference for something obscure or whatever. well, those times are over. it is no secret that Vincent was a liberal politically. his interest in art, conservation, and theatre among other things are stereotypically liberal that we didn't need his daughter to hammer the point home because there's some fans out there, like me, who could care less about their favorite actor or singer's political views and i get offended when it comes across that Republicans like myself shouldn't be a fan of Vincent's because "we're bad and want to destroy public TV and arts programs", which is how i took it from reading this book. politics you might ask? it's true! Victoria at times brings up the liberalism that she and her parents lived and practiced but she intentionally or accidentally makes people who don't live that way or think as her friends do as being strange or abnormal...in addition, Victoria goes into detail about his successful career on the stage in playhouses all over the United States and abroad and to me this was informative because most people focus on his horror career only. but, here comes another problem, the lack of information on his horror career and his movies in general. what we're treated to are her accounts of what critics or her father had to say about the movies...she offers no first-hand knowledge and SHE IS HIS DAUGHTER so she should know things we don't already...and by the time this book arrived she had PLENTY of time to watch his horror films and get an opinion of them. but, Vincent's dramatic films are also given very little discussion. if we're to believe her, none of her father's films are worth watching unless they recieved high praise from a nationally known critic or were box office successes. she paints a picture that her father's films can't be open to anyone's viewpoint once a critic has stamped it a bomb or whatever. i've seen quite a few of his so-called flops and they were GREAT! near the end of the book we're told about his career on TV and in commercials. his 1981-1989 run as the host of the PBS classic show "Mystery!" is also touched upon but once again, Victoria showers the chapters with second and third-hand information that family should already know first-hand. the pictures in the book are great!! i love the one where he's with his peers: Karloff, Lorre, and Rathbone during a photo shoot in the early '60s. there is a segment in the book that details Vincent's artistic flamboyance, and she brings up the silly rumors that Vincent was bi-sexual. first off, Vincent's sexual behavior isn't interesting to me! when i'm watching him stare at someone with that menacing look or if he's laughing at some devious scheme he's cooked up, i'm certainly not thinking about who he's sleeping with or who he finds attractive off-screen and so i find this section of the book silly and uncalled for and a MAJOR distraction to what the book was suppose to be, a biography of her father through HER eyes and NOT through the eyes and opinions of critics and industry insiders, which is basically what it turns out to be as a whole!! the only time i see that she gets personal and really says how she feels is when she talks about Vincent and his life with Coral Browne {near the end of the book since the marriage came in 1974}. now, i don't expect Victoria to drop to her knees and kiss the ground her step-mother walked on because after all Coral wasn't Victoria's mother, but at the same time, Corale couldn't have been that awful or else Victoria would've said something DECADES ago to a tabloid paper!! i give this book 3 stars because Victoria doesn't seem to realize that her father's fans aren't interested in rumor, gossip, and alleged communist involvement that were never proven because the accusations were flimsy and had no weight, so it's baffling as to why she'd plant those kind of thoughts about her father to potential new fans who ONLY know of Vincent through Batman re-runs {Vincent played "Egghead" on a few episodes}. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Traveling around the world from your own kitchen
Ordered as a gift for my daughter and we share the book. I have made over a dozen recipes from this book and with success. I made the simpler recipes since my cooking skills are limited, but intend to tackle challenging recipes in the future. Mr. Price has traveled all over the world and reviewed restaurants and writes about the places he visited and gives good tips about the recipes he shares in his book. A nice novelty piece for the kitchen also. As written by other reviewers, this is more than a cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating
One of the reasons this book has become a classic is not merely the recipes. This book captures an entire lifestyle -- the Kennedy-era, globe-trotting, Pan Am, waiters in bow ties, gourmet lifestyle.

This is a Mad Men book.

Everything about this book screams "gracious dining." The Prices in their kitchen with gleaming copper pots. The reproductions of pages from vintage menus. The word "Luncheon." The two-color pen and ink illustrations. The padded leatherette binding with two silk bookmarks.

This is not to say that the Prices are snobbish. They're cultured. The scope and level of detail in this book is loving and extraordinary.

After I saw the "Mad Magician" when I was 14, I became a Vincent Price fan forever. What a wonderfulsurprise to discover that he also loved art and cooking!I saw him lecture on art at the University ofKentucky and read his book "I Like What I Know."I was thrilledto buy his cookbook in the late 60's--it has remained one of my most prizedpossessions. The recipes are just the best, but the real wonderment for mewas to see the beautiful full page color plates of his house and hisextensive collection of plates, glasses, pots, pans, etc.All sorts ofthings I had never heard of at the time.Just wonder-full.So not onlydid I enjoy your movies and cooking expertise, I felt that I shared in apart of your life, too.Thank you and God bless you, Vincent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing historical and culinary work of art!
This book is as wonderful as everyone says it is. There are gorgeous pictures of the top restaurants of the day, including many that are now closed. So the interior design shots are a terrific little archive of culinary AND interior design history. The book is well written, with a charming tone, much like a letter from a friend would sound, and incredibly descriptive. How can anyone not like a book that contains the word "obstreperous"???!!!This book is fantastic.I have many, many cookbooks, but this one really engages the reader and paints wonderful pictures in their minds, much like a novel would. Vincent and Mary's personalities comes through in the writing and in the pictures of their own home... they sound like wonderful, wonderful people. If I could, I would give this book 100 stars!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars a long time kitchen friend
I learned to cook with this book, in its first edition, when I was a teen; this cookbook engendered a love of cooking I still enjoy years later!I still refer to my somewhat spattered copy frequently today. The recipes work well, and I love the personal notes from Vincent Price, and the menus from world class famous restaurants are genuinely fascinating.Where given, the menu prices are a hoot! For what it is worth, the binding is superb;mine has held up under four decades of hard use.

Product Description
Many of the key films in the career of horror icon Vincent Price (1911-1993) contain commentaries both obvious and subtle on the role of women, not only in the context of the times in which the films were created, but also during the historical periods depicted in the storylines. This examination of Price's horror films focuses on how the principal female characters--portrayed by such notable actresses as Barbara Steele, Hazel Court and Diana Rigg, to name but a few--are simultaneously villains, victims and objects of veneration. Also considered are issues of gender and sexuality as addressed in Vincent Price's most memorable movies. Included are dozens of rare production stills and a selected filmography that provides significant background information on the films cited. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This one is Great.
I know that Vincent Price's daughter wrote a biography about her father, but I found this book much more interesting. The beginning of this large soft cover book does give a nice biography of his life. The second half of the book though cover every movie Vincent ever appeared in, whether as a star, a co-star, cameo or just voice. It gives information about each movie and even a review. There is also a nice picture or two to go with each. This was very informative and a great wealth of information about all of his movies.A nice forward from Vincent is also included.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Price Club
Lucy Chase Williams, where are you?Have you written any oher books besides this splendid tribute to Vincent Price?

OK, maybe you were a little harsh on BACKTRACK, but I admit it is not a film for everybody.Jodie Foster was in her adventurous period then, and making a film by Dennis Hopper was probably a mistake, but give her credit for trying something different! As for Price, he is terrific in the movie, and the whole thing is defnitely a more worthy picture than many which you,
But in the main what can I say, you've done an excellent job, not only interviewing the obvious co-stars and producers, but also some obscure ones.I was thrilled to find an interview with the late Alexander Knox in your book.Knox, who played WILSON in the eponymous 1944 Fox historical epic, gave this interview only a few days before his own death, and reading his words gives the avid reader a new insight into the way Vincent Price saw his own function as an actor, an entertainer, and a man of public policy.I wonder if it's true that Price was a victim of blacklisting; certainly his career changes radically during the McCarthy Era and when it was over, he was firmly typecast in a series of profitable, some very successful artistically almost in spite of himself, B pictures.Did he regret going the horror route? You could never really tell. This book dips a little into Price's resentment at the way Sears ruined his credibility as a collector and art historian.

The book makes us long for the release of more of Price's 1940s films on DVD!How about MOSS ROSE or THE WEB or THE EVE OF ST MARK

The photos are unbelievable, especially the bare-shouldered, long-haired beefcake shot that begins the book (London, 1935, with a pervert behind the camera) or the December 1964 shot in which Elsa Lanchester, Vampira, and Carroll Borland pose with Price at the opening of THE TOMB OF LIGEIA.All these different generations of horror stars frozen forever in one frame: it's like a white version of A GREAT DAY IN HARLEM.

5-0 out of 5 stars the complete FEATURE films of Vincent Price
on page 252-253 there's a great picture of Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and John Carradine in 1983 during a photo session for the film "House of the Long Shadows", a movie that i like {however, i hate the character that Arnaz, Jr. played because of his cynicism and lack of respect for traditional horror}. the pictures, incidentally, make up for the lack of coverage of Vincent's other careers! there's pictures of his cartoon characters from Disney and Hanna-Barbera. there's posters for the "Butterfly Ball" project plus numerous print ads for products that appeared in magazines. a picture of him with Alice Cooper is also shown! the rest of this book highlights all 100 of Vincent's FEATURE films, which are anything that is shown in movie theatres. i think the book is great! seeing the pictures and movie posters are like walking through time...i wouldn't have added any negative criticism about the movies because it dampens the mood of the book, which is to be a celebration of his career in movies...but there are several harsh criticisms of his films from critics and Vincent himself, who himself was a critic: of art! the book also contains Vincent's now-legendary comments on his own profession just after wrapping up the 1987-released film "The Offspring". in brief, Price announces that he's tired and bored talking about horror films. it's then explained that the film he just finished maybe caused him to be a bit testy with the reporter. Price had realized after his scenes were complete that the producers/director were filming extreme gore and slasher elements to be aired around his narrative parts and it made him furious that his name and image would be grouped with that TYPE of film once again {1984's "Bloodbath at the House of Death" was pretty gory and Price's appearance clashes with the sadistic storyline}. "The Offspring" was a Tales From the Crypt meets Twilight Zone anthology in which Price plays a town historian in rural Oldfield. a picture from that film (a shot of Price at a desk) is here. GET this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Priceless" Pictures from an Actor's Life
Forget the biographical portion of this book-it's short and general, though sufficient to the purpose of what this volume really is, which is a celebration of Price's life and films.

What sells this book is the pictures.Gorgeous stills from all of Price's movies-and quite a few from his life and stage plays, as well-plentifully stuff this beautiful coffee-table offering, on every page. Each film is discussed briefly, along with notes on its place in Price's life and ouevre, and accompanied by comments from his directors, producers and co-stars, and even Price, himself. Each picture is worth a thousand words, and some of them are really remarkable-for instance, cartoon cells from characters Price voiced for Disney studios and Miramax (The Great Mouse Detective and Arabian Knight) and Hanna-Barbera's The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo.There are photos of him with famous seemingly unlikely latter-day admirers, like Alice Cooper.Caricatures and print-ads abound, such as Price selling Tuaca liqueur and Emba minks.Even his image on a long-forgotten Milton Bradley "Shrunken Head Apple Sculpture" kit is on display.

The first part of this coffee-table sized book gives an overview of Vincent Price's life, as well as his career.Obviously not a believer in reincarnation, this section concludes with a quote from Vincent Price himself."You only get one time around, so why waste a minute of this glorious life?"The remainder of this book discusses every feature film connected with Vincent Price, whether he was the star, co-star, narrator, had a brief cameo or did the voice of an animated character. All 100 entries give the release date of the film, the film studio that made the picture, the running time, whether it was filmed in black and white or color, the cast, the director, the producer, the writer, etc.The next section gives a synopsis of the plot, sometimes followed by quotes from the man himself or other actors appearing in the film, and all concluding with contemporary reviews of the movie. Each entry has at least one photo from the actual film or a candid picture taken on the film set or, at the very least, the accompanying movie poster. Two things struck me while reading this book. One, Vincent Price was a versatile actor who excelled in every genre of film he appeared in, not just horror movies. Two, every actor quoted mentioned his wicked sense of humor, how great he was to get along with, and his professionalism.Of the latter, Gregory Peck summed it up best."You get a bad piece of material, you do everything you can to improve it...That's what you're supposed to do.That's what Vincent did.I'm sure that he never, in his life, phoned it in, so to speak, or did less than his utmost best..."If you're looking for a book that dishes dirt and recounts gossip, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a comprehensive book of all of Vincent Price's movies, look no further. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Notes of a Longtime Price Fan
True fans of Vincent Price don't really care whether or not we're watching something badly made like SCREAM AND SCREAM AGAIN or some auteur-approved masterpiece like TOMB OF LIGEIA.As long as Vincent Price is in it, hamming it up and acting all others right off the screen we are in hog heaven. It's a strange, fervid fraternity and way back when someone started calling us The Price Club and the name just stuck.

Denis Meikle has given us a book that clears up some of the myths surrounding Price's career, but he seems determined to create a new one, based somewhat on Victoria's great book. His thesis is that the McCarthy hearings and the "graylist" of which Price was the victim made him scared that he would never work again, so that afterwards, from the mid 1950s on, he consented to appear in any piece of schlock if the "price was right."Again and again he evinces this theory to explain, for example, why VP appeared as "Egghead" on TV's BATMAN.Price himself often stated that he wanted money to but more modern art with, but Meikle discounts this simple explanation.

I am the proud owner of a signed copy of Price's awesome book THE ART IN MY LIFE and I think that he indeed loved art and that he wasn't just "running scared" from the HUAC police.

But everyone deserves a forum for their views and Meikle makes a good case for his.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love Vincent Price you will love this great book
When I was a kid way, way back in the late sixties to the early
seventies I never failed to catch a great Price film on the late night Creature Features. This book is hard to put down.
Dennis Meikle does'nt white wash the Master of Menace, nor present him in any unfavorable light. All of Price's successes
and failings are told here in a very respectful manner. As a
matter of fact there were some parts of Price's life I did'nt want to know. This is the story of a great actor the likes of whom we will never ever see again. Well illustrated. A really
excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars No one like him! Wonderful Tribute to the Master of Menace
Vincent Price came into horror films by way of the studio system. His body of work is amazing, and he showed a fine sense of comedic timing in His Kind of Woman, with Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell, playing an OTT hammy actor. Later this tough for droll comedy would show in two gems - The Raven and The Comedy of Terrors. However, he really gathered attention in 1952 with House of Wax.After that wonderful performance, it was non stop fun all the way.

Many of his films were for William Castle or Roger Corman, and often considered Drive-In fodder - such as The Fly, The Bat, House on Haunted Hill.It was the series of Poe movies that firmly linked the word horror to Price - and I think it was a term he enjoyed completely. At the time the Corman-Price-Poe series of movies - The Pit and The Pendulum (with Scream Queen Barbara Steele), House of Usher, Tomb of Ligeia, Masque of the Red Death, Haunted Palace (which was really Lovecraft not Poe, but what the hey...) were often dismissed. But looking back, you will see finely crafted horror films that are still a pleasure to what now, with many of Price's wonderful performances.

Even later, he continued to seek out this same spotlight with the campy Theatre of Blood and the Dr. Phibes duo of films or the more serious Cry of the Banshee and Conqueror Worm (one of his most underrated performances).

He scared us with a gentle boo, mesmerising with that voice, thrilled us with the wondrous menacing laugh, enchanted us with his devilish twinkle in his eye...he entertained us cooking fish in his dishwasher on Johnny Carson.

His legacy lives and this is wonderful tribute to the master!Loaded with pictures, it is a must for Price fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Long Live Vincent Price
As an avid horror fan, I must say Vincent Price is the long-standing king of horror. When I think of horror movies, he immediately comes to mind. Finally, a book that specializes in the work of a true master who truly loved his work.Having recently purchased this, I look forward to mulling through its contents and watching the many films of "The Master of the Macabre."Long live Vincent Price!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Long live Vincent Price!
I just finished reading this excellent book on Vincent Price. It concentrates just on his work in the horror film genre which is primarly what he is remembered for. Denis Meikle follows Vincent's career chronologically film by film, giving details of the production as well as what was going on in Price's life at the time. While this is not an exhaustive work on this wonderful actor, it makes a great companion piece to his daughter's book "Vincent Price: A Daughter's Biography" which covers his personal life and Lucy Chase Williams' excellent "The Complete Films of Vincent Price" which covers all his film output. All together, these tell the story of one of the last true renaissance men. Recommended. ... Read more

If you are a "Poe" fan and especially if you remember listening to the old radio stories that gave you the chills you will love this! The readings are done in such a way that you cannot help but visualize in your mind being right there in each scene that is being told. What a great way to relax away a bad day!

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I love Edgar Allan Poe and I thought it would be extra spooky and fun to have the likes of Price and Rathbone, but they did not captivate me at all.I would rather read my book than listen to this collection. It is now sitting on a shelf untouched after one run through - bummer.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect casting
Excellent collection. Basil Rathbone and Vincent Price are the perfect readers. Great listen on a dark and stormy night!

3-0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Much Better
Yes the recordings are as good as the other reviewers say they are. However a couple of nits:

1. The recordings run into one another. Not having listened to these works for many years, several times it took me a bit to realize that one had ended and I was now listening to another masterpiece.A little breathing room between pieces or even a quick title announcement would have been appreciated.

2. There is no listing of what is on what disk on either the box or the CD holder insert. That means you have to use the paper insert to find what you want or scan the tiny silver font on green disk labels.Unfortunately my insert was missing. It would have been so much nicer to have the play list printed on the cd holder where it would be handy whenever I pulled one out.

1-0 out of 5 stars phooey
Audiobooks are books meant to be read aloud, enunciation and clarity are among the most important.

Using these very old recordings done for a 'dramatic appeal' has left me with a feeling of wanton waste of money.

Basil Rathbone's renditions are from a Shakespearean attempting to do Poe. If he would simply read. Alas, he acts, not reads.

All of his recordings are:Volume too low, adjust up, volume to high, adjust down, yelling, adjust down again, whispering, adjust up again, etc. etc. ad nauseum. One cannot possibly hear using one setting of volume.

It is a waste of money. Find a human who can read it and enunciate and let me do the fantasizing and imagining and conjuring. The poetry and prose should stand up alone and by itself, not acted upon. Rathbone died in 1967. The recording is over 50 years old!!

Anyone who needs it play acted is not getting the correct message. It's about the words, not the actor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure
This book is full of recipes from Vincent and Mary's travels around the world. I love the way it is written. The recipes are definitely rich. I will keep this one forever too because there is something very special about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Foodies a la Mad Men
One of the reasons this has become a classic is not merely the recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a special book.
Vincent and Mary Price loved food, and traveled around the world to enjoy it. This is a compendium of recipes from great restaurants around the world, ca. 1965. The book is wonderful visually, and has reproductions of the restaurants' menus. And great pictures of Vincent Price!

If you enjoy cookbooks, get this old beauty in your collection, even if you're not cooking with it regularly. As the title indicates, it is a real treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for recipe collectors....

5-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't get any better than this
The best part about this book is the variety of Price-related topics, from a Tim Burton short to his television work. His most popular movies are covered, from either a critical stand-point to a historical one, and each and every chapter is flavored with a selection from a very large interview with Vincent Price himself, never-before published. Of all the horror stars to grace the radio waves, Price was the most versitile, as apparent in an excellent chapter about his radio performances. Not only did Vincent Price guest, star or host on a variety of American and British radio series, but comedies, movie adaptations and WWII radio relief programs are also covered. A job well done for Midnight Marquee!

4-0 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE MUST
I've read this book with passion. The first chapters I turned to were, of course, the Vincent Price movies I loved the most. What makes this book so great is for the first time, Midnight Marquee actually featured a chapteron Vincent Price's radio work. That fascinated me more than anyone elseand the author of that specific chapter, Martin Grams, Jr., needs to becommended. What Gregory Mank does for horror films in the realm ofdocumentation, Martin Grams, Jr. does for radio. That chapter alone isworth the price of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, strong book.
Although LCW has the trophy on books about Vincent Price, this is a thoroughly interesting read. You'll agree wholeheartedly with some of the views of the various authors and shake your head sadly at some of theothers, but it's always engaging. The usual MidMar high quality!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice , but pales in comparison to Lucy Chase Williams' book!
The multi-faceted pov of this book -- what with different critics reviewing the most important films of Price's oeuvre -- is both its greatest asset and biggest shortcoming. Some of the critics are wildly offthe mark, some of them celebrating the mediocre and others unfairly damningminor genre gems.I caught a couple of factual errors, too, although byand large the book passed the scrutiny of a rather discriminating fan. The most enjoyable aspect of this book, for me, was the asides where almostall the guest critics confided a personal encounter with Vincent Price -- afan letter answered, an autograph, an impromptu interview session.Infact, the mosaic of these individual encounters seemed to create a cohesivesubstance to the book that otherwise may have been lacking.TheLawrence French interviews were quite nice to include -- and it is worthnoting that the editors did seem to go out of their way to include lesserknown photographs as illustration. Also quite nice was the essay aboutPrice's radio work -- surely one of the lesser known sides of his higlyversatile career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highlight: Adetailedinterview with Price
Although I thought several chapters of this book covered ground that was too familiar, with several chapters being little more that plot summary, there are severalchapters that are quite astute, as is the selection ofstills, many never widely seen before. Undoubtedly the best feature is along interview with Price, by Lawrence French, placed next to each filmchapter under discussion.A Q & A interview segment with Price alsoopens and closes the book.Since each film covered is by a differentauthor, the results, like Price's own films, vary greatly (from good toawful). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining reading
Price's biography is colorful and entertaining, with a list of about every film he made, reviews, and exciting photos. The critical edge writers offer is the very spice needed to liven things up, compared to laboring through 500 pages or more written by daughter Victoria Price and other newer writers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cut-and-paste at its laziest
For many years, this was the only biography of the renowned actor/gourmet cook/art authority, and if you don't know anything at all about Vincent Price, it might suffice.I bought it when it first came out, but even then I recognized it as basically a cut-and-paste job (literally -- the text blocks sit askew on some pages like they were manually pasted up in someone's dining room) culled from any number of press sources that gives precious little insight into Price, as either a man or an actor.Worse, the write-ups of his films are so smugly dismissive that one wonders why the authors bothered publishing a book about a figure they clearly seem to disdain. This book is a prime example of the kind of slipshod 1970s "film journalism" that thankfully is no longer acceptable for publication.
