1-0 out of 5 stars Poor, poorjob of editing and it leaves out the best part!
Synopsis: A brief biography of Luther's life. Part of a series of approximately 20 books entitled Heroes of the Faith. Evidently, it is edited and abridged from a larger work by one Dan Harmon.

My review: Mr. Harmon has done a poor, poor, poor job of editing a larger work. Really bad. The book has large, direct quotes from other sources, including big chunks of the questioning of Luther at the Diet of Worms in 1521. This is most appropriate since Luther was a well-spoken as well as plain-spoke debater. His text is lively and interesting to read. Even to the modern reader his meaning is quite clear and devoid of all of the flowery Renaissance nonsense that entraps other writers and bores me to distraction.

However, Harmon edited out Luther's most famous line: 'My conscience is captive to the Word of God...Here I stand I can do no other.' This is the image of Luther presented in every school book in the world - the solitary monk standing up to the entire church and against all of Europe's kings at the Diet of Worms on a matter of conscience and refusing to blink because, by God (literally), he thinks he is right and is willing to die for that belief. In my mind, this is one of those moments of heroism that everyone should admire, even if you are not a believer. But, this editor edited it out!!! The height of his shining moment - gone!!

Ironically, that quote is featured on the back of the book - it is in bold print and serves as the headline for the description of the book! AARRGH! Even sillier, the editor has left in a one page description of Charles the Elector's retinue and the parade as they entered Augusburg in 1530. Wow!!!! - if they were trying to limit the size of the book, they really edited out the wrong part!!!! Who really cares what color his men wore as they paraded into town!

My grade: The book is, in general, informative and would serve as a decent introduction to Luther. However, I cannot forgive the very poor editing job. Imagine a Lincoln biography without the Gettysburg Address, a Martin Luther King, Jr. biography without his 'I have a dream speech' or a Julius Caesar biography without 'Vini, vidi, vici.' Man, my blood is up. Imagine, printing this whole book and EDITING OUT THE POINT!!!!!!! Really, I cannot stress my irritation enough, as you all can surely tell by this point...

***Reviewer's note: please read the comment section. The editor of the text made a few comments that explain the "Diet of Worms" section was left out. Thanks, DWD 3-14-07

4-0 out of 5 stars MEET THE REFORMERS' ANCHOR-POINT
This German-born Martin Luther was the most prominent of all the Sixteenth Century reformers (as well as counter-reformers). His life became his religious struggle. Though he won some and lost some, he became a symbol of religious defiance to his adversaries, and an anchor-point to his disciples.
This book did not detail us on the reason why some of his co-reformers parted ways with him; but I did enjoy the time I invested on reading it.

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting light reading
I picked this up at a Christian book store for half price. This is an abridged book in a series on famous Christians (mostly Protestant). The author, who is clearly sympathetic with Luther's cause, devotes more attention to Luther's personal relationships and political struggle than to his theology. However, this is probably appropriate for the intended audience (the book store located it near the young readers' section).I can't compare the book to others since this is the first I've read on the topic, but I've personally found it to be an enjoyable read. ... Product Description
The New York Mets fan is an Amazin’ creaturewhose species finds its voice at last in GregPrince’s Faith and Fear In Flushing, the definitive account of what it means to rootfor and live through the machinations of anendlessly fascinating if often frustratingbaseball team.

Prince, coauthor ofthe highly regarded blog of the same name, examines how the life of the franchise mirrorsthe life of its fans, particularly his own.Unabashedly and unapologetically, Prince standsup for all Mets fans and, by proxy, sports fanseverywhere in exploring how we root, why we take it so seriously, and what it all means.

What was it like to enter a baseball worldabout to be ruled by the Mets in 1969? Tounderstand intrinsically that You Gotta Believe? To overcome the trade of an idol and thedissolution of a roster? To hope hard for acomeback and then receive it in thrillingfashion in 1986? To experience the constant upsand downs the Mets would dispense for the nexttwo decades? To put ups with the Yankees rightnext door? To make the psychic journey from Shea Stadium to Citi Field? To sort the myths from the realities? Greg Prince, as he has done forthousands of loyal Faith and Fear inFlushing readers daily since 2005, puts itall in perspective as only he can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for Met fans
This book is, pardon the use of the term, Amazin'.If you believe that you are a true Mets fan, consider this required reading. As an age peer to the author, it was very easy for me to place myself in his shoes.I found myself nodding in agreement so often that anyone watching me read it would assume that I was a human bobblehead doll.I haven't enjoyed a book this much in many many years.Recommendation? No, this is demand.Read it.You'll be a better Met fan for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!

Greg does a terrific job telling us how the team intertwines with his life. He doesn't live for the Mets, but the team is like family -- with all the good and bad that family brings. Faith and Fear is a wonderful read for any baseball fan!

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for all Mets fans!
This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. I highly recommend it to any Met fan (especially Met fans like myself, that followed the team from the early 70's).

5-0 out of 5 stars aith and Fear in Flushing
I bought this Item as a gift for my grandson for Christmas. He was very pleased with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars You don't have to be a Mets fan to like this book ...
This guy blows me away -- his recollection of dates, places, people and stats is amazing. But, somehow, he manages to tell an engaging story without over-doing the stats -- the numbers are secondary.

Of course, I'm a NY Mets fan, so I was drawn into the stories just for the stories. If you aren't a Mets fan, this book may not be for you.

(A Quick Note: the stories are artfully crafted, and are intriguing, regardless of which MLB team you root for. But, the stories are MOST interesting if / when: a) you are a Mets fan, and b) at the VERY least, you are a baseball fan.Without one, or both, of those, this book won't do a thing for you.)

I am reminded of a TV show about lawyers (as if that weren't a HUGE population), where two prosecutors are having lunch. One (a woman) makes the other (a man) give her "the speech": why do they do what they do, for little money, no recognition and with the fear or retribution from the criminals they prosecute. He gives her the ra-ra speech and she remembers why she got into this in the first place.

That's what this book is for me -- a bit of a speech, to remind me why I became a Mets fan, and why I'm *still* a Mets fan. And why I'll continue to be a fan, even in the face of their current inability to win games. And it clued me in to the fact that there are a LOT of other long-suffering Mets fans out there as well.

Wish me luck ... ... Read more

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.

Excerpt: Prince (born Prince Rogers Nelson; June 7, 1958) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. He has been known under the unpronounceable symbol , which he used between 1993 and 2000. This name change invoked controversy and many referred to him as "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince", often abbreviated to "TAFKAP", or simply "The Artist" during that period. According to Robert Larsen in his book, History of Me and I, Prince is "one of the most talented and commercially successful pop musicians of the last twenty years", producing ten platinum albums and thirty Top 40 singles during his career. Prince founded his own recording studio and label, writing, self-producing and playing most, or all, of the instruments on his recordings. In addition, Prince has been a "talent promoter" for the careers of Sheila E, Carmen Electra, The Time and Vanity 6, as well as writing songs that became hits for other artists including Chaka Khan, The Bangles, and Sinéad O'Connor, making him one of the most successful artists in recent music history. Prince is reported to have written more than one thousand songs, some of which have been released by Prince under pseudonyms or recorded and released by other artists. Prince also has hundreds of unreleased songs in his "vault". He has won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=57317 ... Read more

Product Description
On December seventh, 1955, Catherine "Kitty" McInerney lay dying in a New York hospital bed.The forty-seven year-old Irish immigrant, suffering from severe toxemia, was preparing for an emergency c-section to give birth to her seventeenth child. As a Catholic priest performed her last rites, Kitty succumbed to a rare moment of quiet reflection. With her thoughts centered on the fate of her many young children, Kitty found no solace in contemplating her improbable tale of survival... her impoverished youth in rural Ireland, her courageous journey from a small Irish village to the largest city in the world, and her tireless devotion to an ever-expanding family amidst impossible hardships.Nor did Kitty realize how her modest life rode a wave of social and political transformation that would come to define modern America.Poor, burdened, and uncelebrated, Kitty McInerney is remarkable for her unrelenting faith, her unique, individual struggle and for exemplifying the American immigrant experience. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Indeed
For those interested in American history through the eyes of an immigrant in times that span some of the biggest changes in the world, this book will interest you.It weaves national and local history, the social and economic times to allow the reader to place themselves in the time and place to better understand an American immigrant's challenges. The book brings to life a real person who led an extraordinary life who touched hundreds of lives as evident by the author's care in telling her tale.It signifies that while well-known figures can be a force in society and shape the world, individual people through their sacrifices, faith, and persistence can also be such a force to those around them. This reader thanks the author for sharing Kitty's story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rich with history & an easy, fascinating read!
It's easy to have preconceived notions about biographies about relatively unknown persons-- that their sole focus would be of interest to those who know/knew the subject. But some great works delve deep enough into the environments, challenges and booms surrounding the person written about, making it fascinating to read and easy to understand how he or she has left an indelible mark on others' lives... and in history.

"The Remarkable Life of Kitty McInerney..." is one such biography. It's a fluent read filled with rich history of the early 20th century evolution of New York, shared from the perspective of one unique, extraordinary Irish immigrant family's experience.

An evident labor of love, the author's tribute to his grandmother's perseverance provides a written legacy of inspiration, hope, and optimism we can all appreciate -- and perhaps experience!

A great read! ... Read more
