Product Description
For two-thousand years, the Chinese, French, Japanese and Republic of Vietnam forces tried to pacify the Mekong Delta and failed. The United States Ninth Infantry Division, and U.S. Naval Forces of Vietnam, did it in a little over three years, but at a high cost. They fought for freedom, they fought with honor, but in the end they fought for each other. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Duty Honor Sacrafice
Outstanding book, what a great read, lots of memories and some tears and some smiles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and fair view of the War
In the interest of fairness, both my wife Bac and I are acknowledged in this book. Also as Ralph points out, Bac and I mostly live in Viet Nam these days.

Ralph does something that is both interesting and difficult. He gives a very fair and balanced view of the history of Viet Nam and of the American involvement in Viet Nam, while at the same time highlighting the Honor and Sacrifice of American sailors and soldiers who did their duty. My only regret is that Ralph did not footnote the extensive research and source material involved in this book.

Ralph's stories are great. Ralph's summation of the history can only offend the most Liberal Europeans and Americans. It is not in dispute by anyone I know who served in Viet Nam on either side. As Ralph's view of the American involvement in Viet Nam is very positive, as is mine, I would like to include a couple of links to Vo van Kiet, the recently deceased former Prime Minister of Viet Nam. I think that these links show the current (post 1986 Doi Moi) Vietnamese reexamination of the War and ofViet Nam'sdesire to right many of the wrongs on their side of the war.

5-0 out of 5 stars Duty Honor Sacrifice
A riveting account of the Navy and Army's joint efforts in Vietnam as recalled by those who were there living it. This book is a true tribute to all who served during those trying times. Bravo Zulu to Ralph Chistopher on a job very well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Duty Honor Sacrifice
Once again Ralph hsa captured the essence of Vietnam. I flew as a Crew Chief/Door Gunner with the Navy SEAWOLVES and we had the task to protect these fine men of the SEAL's and the River Boats or anyone that needed a fire to be put out. Excellent reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Action Packed Vietnam War Stories Of The Men Who Actually Fought IT
Duty Honor Sacrifice gives a detailed account of Naval Inshore Opperations in Southeast Asia. The Naval forces systematically won the battles, only to lose the conflict to the agenda of the self serving politicians, and the anti war biased news media. Vietnam was the only war in United States history where the combatants were held accountable for losing a war, that they had fought so hard to win. Shame on America for turning your backs on them. ... Read more

Product Description
The true story of an elite group of men who wrote a page in Naval history. They patrolled the waterways in thirty-one foot river patrol boats powered by Detroit diesel engines with water jet-propulsion. Armed with machineguns and grenade launchers, as well as sheer guts and determination, these sailors faced danger around every bend in the river. Working together, they became one of the finest weapons in Admiral Zumwalt’s arsenal for turning back the tide of communist infiltration into Saigon, taking control of the inland waterways. These are true accounts of their bravery, which they proved time and again by spearheading operations into enemy controlled territory. United together in brotherhood, they accomplished all their missions and won their part of the Vietnam War..

Product Description
The United States Navy's fight for control of the waters of Southeast Asia By far the greatest contribution of the narrative is the insight it provides into the how's and whys of United States involvement in Vietnam, and the attempt of that involvement to bring freedom to those who were unable to achieve it by their own efforts. We see the United States more as a caretaker and less as a policeman in terms of motivation for its involvement half a world away. And . . . we see the tremendous price paid by those who served to ensure that freedom - ordinary men who, by fate, were thrown together in a strange land, and who fulfilled a part of their destiny, and their Nation's, on the brown water. 4-0 out of 5 stars Brown water navy
I was so pleased to see a book that covered a significant portion of my tour with Stabron 20 on the Grand Canal in South Viet Nam.The book provides enlightenment and explains some of the events during the 1969 - 1970 period in the Mekong Delta. Its a bittersweet remembrance, made so by the sacrifice of young lives for political expedience. It was a dangerous mission for a while. Sitting against the bank at night in a 4 person gunboat waiting for the NVA to come out of Cambodia while boats down river were being ambushed was a challenge.

The book overlooks some of the sadder elements, those who were unfit to serve and some of the craziness that broke out that was hard to take at times.Like the boat captain that turned up river one night on a pleasure cruise between floating bases and went into Cambodia where he was captured. The CIA worked their magic and retrieved him from the Cambodians.Later he was court martialed. I would like to know who that Cambodian officer was that we extracted from Neak Lung shortly thereafter. He couldn't speak a word of English but he was one happy camper as we headed off down the river.

I personally believe the North Vietnamese knew that an invasion of their Cambodian sanctuaries was being planned and that is why we saw so much action along the Grand Canal in the Spring of 1970 as they moved their assets out of Cambodia into the Delta.MACV in Saigon was infiltrated at the highest levels.

The book really fills in some blanks and helps bring back some memories and events that have been lost to me over 40 years.I knew some of the locals were vehemently anti communist but did not know why. Also, never knew who those rafts of bodies (by the hundreds) were floating down the Mekong from Cambodia. The book explains these events.Overall its well worth reading for those of us who served.

Many of us had an adjustment period upon our return to civilian life.To this day I can't figure it out entirely. Thanks so much for taking the time to write this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars From RET. Commander Kirk Ferguson, CO STABRON-20
"Ralph Christopher's 'RIVER RATS' has captured the essence of his tour of duty in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War. Don't miss the impressive artwork design of the PBR churning up a brown water wash of riverine squadron shoulder patches on the book's cover, and the free-hand drawn map of the Mekong Delta on page v with place names we who were there in the early 1970s know but cartographers for National Geographic would not necessarily know. Ralph recounts the progress of the war, the day to day experiences with many of the U.S. Navy sailors, by name, who were all a part of the Brown Water Navy forces fighting a formidable enemy. There are 47 new photographs and all of his recollections are true, the men you meet through Ralph were naval warriors fighting and dying in this hostile environment. Ralph Christopher's narrative moves from often humorous situations to riveting, gut-wrenching firefights where his dialog is that of another Tom Clancy. Every armchair badmiral who served in any war will want this book in his library,"

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I was in the military during, but never went to Viet-Nam. I think I am grateful because I don't know how I would have handled it. From talking to others who did go I have learned what some actions were like. Ralph brought to me another aspect I never knew. The river war was fought by heroes. Ralph is one of those heroes. I hold him and his book in very high regard.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
First I did participate in the creation of the book and am acknowledged in it. So I may not be unbiased. I was also there, where and when some of the events described in the book happened. Ralph states that the book is 70% true and 30% "sea stories." Having been involved in fact checking the areas of the book where I had some knowledge, I can honestly say that Ralph has worked very hard to get the facts right. I feel that at least 90% of what is stated as fact in this book can be taken to the bank. The remaining 10% could well be true as well.

Despite Ralph's offer of free copies, I have with my own money bought eight copies. Now when the kids ask, "Daddy. What did you do during the war? I can give them this book. Ralph got it right. What more can you ask? ... Read more

Product Description
When nature and art merge, brilliant and unexpected things can happen. Here, in conjunction with photographer/editor Christopher Makos, breakout artist Paul Solberg has created an astonishing collection of photographs. Solberg’s BLOOM takes an oft-visited subject—flowers—and approaches it from a new, bold angle.

Working in a still-life, studio format, Solberg created sumptuous floral portraits detailing living entities. He captured the flowers at the moment of their most extraordinary beauty: when they are first blossoming. The reader will simultaneously see the static quality and ongoing nature of the living bloom: In almost three-dimensional work, the photo effervesces with tranquility.

Unlike the catalogue-esque quality of many books dedicated to flowers, BLOOM is not bogged down with saccharin sentimentality, and its images are crafted with precision and clarity.Paul Solberg is a photographic version of Georgia O’Keeffe as he turns petals into organic sculpture, blooms into modern architecture and curving stems into Balanchine dancers.Set against solid-colored backgrounds, the shots are as much about the space created around the flowers as the flowers themselves.

From the first time Christopher Makos and Ralph Pucci were introduced to Paul Solberg’s work, they knew that they had found a new talent.World-renowned photographer Makos was impressed by a man new to his field, and recognized in Solberg a "hunger to know coupled with a love of beauty and a sense of wonder."And Ralph Pucci, a highly-regarded designer, thought his work was "fresh, modern, clean."

BLOOM’s incredible beauty carries a universal quality, and it is sure to appeal to florists, fashion-lovers and art aficionados alike. But most of all, the book will create a following for the never-before-published Paul Solberg. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sumptuous!
Paul Soberg has captured the richness and texture of his subjects so well that at times I felt they were finely illustrated water colored drawings - certainly no one can capture flowers as vividly as Mr. Soberg has managed to do! I am tempted to get a second copy for framing.

I find every picture captivating in detail, contrast, simplicity, uniqueness.Every time I page through the book I notice more and experience different emotions. To me, this is an artist who has reached me. This is a gift I am sharing with my friends!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's ALL about the flowers
The rich simplicity of the photographs in this book allows the reader to appreciate the natural intricacy and complexity of each bloom.More than a modern take on the traditional botanical field guide, these photographs discover the sensuality of flowers that surrounds us.The composition of the shots range from stunning to whimsical - a real delight. This book fills a big spot on my Christmas shopping list.

Excerpt: Christopher Eric Hitchens (born April 13, 1949) is an English-American author and journalist. His books, essays, and journalistic career have spanned more than four decades, making him a public intellectual, and a staple of talk shows and lecture circuits. He has been a columnist and literary critic at The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, Slate, World Affairs, The Nation, Free Inquiry, and a variety of other media outlets. As a political observer, polemicist and self-defined radical with an astute historical knowledge, Hitchens rose to prominence as a fixture of the left-wing publications of both his native United Kingdom and United States. Hitchens's departure from the established political left began in 1989 after what he called the "tepid reaction" of the European left following Ayatollah Khomeini's issue of a fatw calling for the murder of Salman Rushdie. The September 11, 2001 attacks strengthened his embrace of an interventionist foreign policy, and his vociferous criticism of what he called "fascism with an Islamic face." Hitchens's adoption of interventionist foreign policy, employment of the term "Islamofascist" and his notable support for the Iraq War have caused his critics to label him a "neoconservative". Hitchens, however, refuses to embrace this designation, insisting himself to be not "any kind of conservative". Hitchens is an atheist and has been identified as being an exponent of the "new atheism" movement. He and fellow high profile contemporary atheists Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris and Daniel Dennett have often been referred to as "The Four Horsemen" and, excluding Dennett, the "Unholy Trinity". Hitchens is a secular humanist a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=228998 ... Read more

Product Description
The Riverine Photo Album is a tribute to those forces that served in the river coastal war of South Vietnam, which was made up of small units of sailors that manned forward firebases, floating detachments, and rode small fast patrol boats and the larger heavy riverine craft alongside South Vietnamese troops, mercenaries, and regional forces, who were fighting for their independence from communist rule. These Navy units were often the first to intercept communist forces trying to transport weapons and fighters into the Republic of Vietnam. Along with the 9th Infantry River Raiders, they severed communist lines and defeated their armies. And then their units were dis-established and sent home after turning over many of their beloved boats, bases, and responsibilities to the South Vietnamese Navy, whom they had trained. The River Rats and River Raiders fought for freedom and they fought with honor, but in the end they fought for each other. Praise is hardly enough. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting read...though still a textbook
This review relates to the 4th Edition, which has been fairly significantly updated since the last reviewer's post.No doubt about it, this was written to be a textbook, it's fairly dense and packed with information. Yet it's also a pretty interesting read if your course takes the time to go through it. I also recommend the Mental Health and Disability Nutshell (Hermann) as a supplement - however that has not been updated since '97 and while most of the information is accurate, the text does contain topics the nutshell doesn't discuss.

1-0 out of 5 stars Law & The Mental Health System - A Review
Good coveage of the caselaw when it was published in 1998, but much has happened in the mental health area of law since then. The clinical studies and theories were hopelessly outdated when the text was published, and are today so dated as to do a disservice to the reader.Until this text is updated, especially in the clincal areas, I cannot recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars no bones about it...
this law book is bone dry, anddelivers exactly the information, and nothing but the information the authors set out to address-- not a pleasure reading book, but a fascinating read and illuminating subsidiary to myclass.
