Product Description
New edition of Galen Rowell's climbing classic includes 10 new stories, new introduction, photographic notes and edits by the author.

It was a smoke-choked, triple-digit August Sunday, a day I will never forget. Smoke from the McNally fire in Sequoia National Park had drifted across the Sierra Nevada for weeks, collecting like a fog bank in the pocket of the Owens Valley. My husband and I were in the Buttermilks most of the day, arriving home at 4:30 in the afternoon to the answering machine’s red blinking light. The message, left before noon, brought disbelief, then sadness.Just after 1:00 A.M. two men were fishing for catfish in Buckley Ponds south of Bishop Airport. They watched a small plane pass by, eye-level, wings perpendicular to the ground, then vanish into the darkness behind a low ridge.

At 1:00 P.M. the next day, our FedEx driver handed me a box from Hong Kong—the final color proofs for this edition of High & Wild. Before he and Barbara left for the Bering Sea, Galen said, that if they had to go to China to tend to another project, they would be back by August 15th. If not, they would be back Sunday. We would look over the proofs, but that was not to be.

Galen and Barbara Rowell moved to Bishop in the late spring of 2001. They bought the old Monument Bank building and opened Mountain Light Gallery. From the day it opened it was the shining star of this rural ranching town’s main street.

It was Galen who suggested that we publish a new edition of his book High & Wild: Essays and Photographs in Wilderness Adventure. He selected photographs, added new chapters, and wrote new material, all of which are as he left them. His photographs were composed with such perfection that an entire image could be used edge to edge without cropping. On my way to and from Bishop, I sometimes saw him photographing the dramatic light of the Sierra or White Mountains through the cottonwoods and poplars, alone and completely absorbed in his work. Galen loved the Eastern Sierra and that is why High & Wild with its many climbing and skiing stories, set here in this beautiful country, held such a special place in his heart.

He stopped by now and then to chat. Once he came by after dayhiking to the summit of White Mountain Peak. On the way down, he wanted to bypass heavy snow then discovered he was in another canyon. To get back to his car, 10,000 became 13,000 feet of gain. Often he climbed Mt. Whitney’s east face in the morning and was back at his desk by noon. More than once he said he was getting too old for such things. He carried the galleys for High & Wild with him to Tibet and back saying it would give him something to read on the long flight. Having outlived his Mt. McKinley ski expedition partners, Ned Gillette, Alan Bard, and Doug Weins, I asked him what it felt like to be the one still here, so he wrote about it.

While working on High & Wild, he lost his friend Warren Harding. Always reminders. Galen valued life, knew its precious quality, and filled every moment with living. On August 23rd, he would have celebrated his 62nd birthday.

Galen and Barbara Rowell came to Bishop like two shooting stars. Burning bright and spectacular, they brought dreams to this town. No matter to what remote corners of the world they traveled, from Siberia to Tibet, they always came back to the Eastern Sierra. This is where they wanted to be. This was home.

5-0 out of 5 stars high and wild: essays and photographs on wilderness adventures
well written essays and wonderful photos!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book of an extroidinary adventurer and photographer.
This collection of vignettes captures the exciting and impressive mountaineering accomplishments of Galen Rowell, more widely known for his out door photography.Excellent read that shows the diversity of Galen's life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a photography bk per se
This is not a photography book. It's more for mountaineering buffs. But, his photos are included in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars another great book
some of the stories here are in shorter form in his other books, but the full accounts are in this book as well as new ones.most of the pictures in the book aren't in his other books, which makes it worthwhile in itself.unlike his more recent work, this is more like his older work with climbing and skiing stories.sad that these are among Galen's final writings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Galen Rowell's nicest book!
This is an amazing book. Some of the best color I've ever seen in one of Galen Rowell's books and with the new essays and new photographs, I'm really glad I bought it even though I already have the original book that came out in the 70's.This is basically a completely new book!Hats' off to the publisher! ... Product Description
The Splendid Heritage catalog of American Indian artifacts represents the commitment of American collectors to share the beauty and significance of hundreds of ethnographic treasures with a worldwide audience. Originally exhibited as the Akicita Collection at the Southwest Museum and as Splendid Heritage at the Wheelwright and Eiteljorg Museums, the expanded collection of artifacts will be on display for a year at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts beginning in February 2009.

This catalog became a reality through the thoughtful, collaborative efforts of John and Marva Warnock and several collectors of rare and unusual artifacts, the majority of which were produced by Plains and Eastern Woodlands cultures. Their passionate respect and attention to detail is reflected in descriptions and provenance for every artifact, presented in magnificent full-page color images and accompanied by essays from internationally recognized scholars and curators. The contributors celebrate the artifacts not merely for their singular qualities as fine art, but also for their significance in the religious and political lives of their original owners. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars native american history by tribe through their art and craftsmanship
From the minute you open the book, your reminded of its' quality. The raised cover, the binding, and excellent paper. This is one of the best compulations of indian arts with narritve, and the visuals of each tribes vivid designs and colors using all sorts of mediums to accent their histories. What is said about using everything, wasting nothing is finely represented in this visual wonderland. This book, which in itself a work of art is very hard to put down.I strongly urge American history buffs, art lovers, and wanderors through indian lore to get this one. Product Description

Large Carnivores and the Conservation of Biodiversity brings together more than thirty leading scientists and conservation practitioners to consider a key question in environmental conservation: Is the conservation of large carnivores in ecosystems that evolved with their presence equivalent to the conservation of biological diversity within those systems? Building their discussions from empirical, long-term data sets, contributors including James A. Estes, David S. Maehr, Tim McClanahan, Andr?s J. Novaro, John Terborgh, and Rosie Woodroffe explore a variety of issues surrounding the link between predation and biodiversity: What is the evidence for or against the link? Is it stronger in marine systems? What are the implications for conservation strategies?

Large Carnivores and the Conservation of Biodiversity is the first detailed, broad-scale examination of the empirical evidence regarding the role of large carnivores in biodiversity conservation in both marine and terrestrial ecosystems. It contributes to a much more precise and global understanding of when, where, and whether protecting and restoring top predators will directly contribute to the conservation of biodiversity. Everyone concerned with ecology, biodiversity, or large carnivores will find this volume a unique and thought-provoking analysis and synthesis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Marshalling science for the conservation of large carnivores
The contributors to this edited book are all advocates of carnivores as well as being partisans of a particular side in an academic debate. This debate concerns the relative importance of "top-down" and "bottom-up" regulation. For example, are elk in Yellowstone limited by the amount of forage available (bottom-up) or by wolf predation (top down)? The answer to the scientific question matters for environmental policy: wolves are a lot more important for the ecosystem if top-down regulation dominates.

With this in mind, it's possible that the fact that these authors like large carnivores for ethical reasons might influence their scientific judgment that top-down regulation generally characterizes ecosystems.Or, it could be that the world really does work that way - - you be the judge. The authors are honest and up-front about both the policy issues and the scientific issues, and there are several contributions that argue for more complex relationships among trophic levels than the simple bottom/top-regulation dichotomy would suggest.

Within this general consensus, the editors have done a good job selecting papers. There is a nice diversity of cases: the usual suspects (wolves and grizzlies for the lay reader; otters, sea urchins, and kelp for the biologist) as well as some new suspects (Florida panther, coral reefs) and some more unusual items (culpeos and exotic herbivores in Patagonia).Themes included not just basic predator-prey relationships but a wide range of more complex relationships within ecosystems on land and in the sea.

The chapters are written by biologists for biologists, but few of the chapters are particularly technical. It should be readable for a lay person with a college degree (or equivalent) - - but it's certainly not a book for the beach.Nonetheless, it is a good book, and one of the few edited books in which the many contributions really do address the same topic. Not only biologists but anyone interested in policy issues of large carnivore conservation can learn from this book.

Product Description

If the treatment of horses who are lame, old, crossbreeds, or simply of no further use to their owners reveals some of the worst in people, the horse rescue and sanctuary movement reveals some of the best. Acclaimed equine photographer Tony Stromberg visits this world — where formerly unwanted horses enjoy newfound freedom and a second chance at dignified life — and brings back inspiration in image and words. As with all Stromberg’s work, Forgotten Horses gives expression to a magnificent form of life. His photos allow readers to see, hear, and connect not just with horses but with a wildness and spirit often absent from hectic urban life. By remembering the “forgotten” horses, these photos remind readers of the true and lasting gifts all animals offer.

Product Description

When horses outlive their usefulness to humans, they are often treated as disposable — auctioned off and sent to the slaughterhouse. But thanks to the work of rescue organizations and horse sanctuaries, many of these formerly unwanted horses are enjoying genuine appreciation and newfound freedom. The horses in this book were abused, neglected, abandoned, rejected. They are lame, old, blind, or just unattractive according to modern ideas of beauty. Some are crossbreeds with no clearly defined bloodline. Others are wild horses that have been forced off public lands. They are enjoying a second chance to live a meaningful and dignified life. They are here to teach us different measures of value, measures we have almost forgotten.

To document these remarkable creatures, acclaimed equine photographer Tony Stromberg traveled to sanctuaries across North America. While many horse books focus on exotic, flashy breeds or famous thoroughbreds, Tony chose to capture the soul of “working-class” equines — many enjoying love and freedom for the first time. Through gorgeous photography, The Forgotten Horses reveals the profound spirit of these amazing animals and honors the people and sanctuaries that have offered them a well-deserved home.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Forgotten Horses by Tony Stromberg
Tony Strombergs "The Forgotten Horses" is the kind of book that reminds one of Marilyn Monroe's "The Last Sitting" by Bert Stern. This pictoral journey of horses is in a totally different light of them and sets it apart from other books. It is sensual, tender, many photos are grainy and warm colors of honey and brown. Each page makes a treat out of viewing to an equine fanatic. Great coffee table book to pick up over and over. Amazing photos - some are so close - for any horse lover, you can feel the mane, the tail, the soft curves, the muscles and smell the sweet aroma of horses. No other book has ever had the same type of effect as this one. An absolute treat for any equine lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing
A little piece of magic. This book is a rare treat, exposing the power and majestic nature of the horse in addition to the skills of Tony Stromberg.Having met Tony personally since purchasing his previous book, Spirit, I may be somewhat biased in my referral. However, I truly believe that his latest book is a 'little piece of magic' and is undeniably a perfect gift for anyone who with a glimmer of interest in the horse, in photography, in history, in culture or in art.Or a gift for yourself - you will not be disappointed. Tony's work has an intriguing way of manifesting its power within its readers...the knock on effect may be subtle, but I'm sure there will be one, as there was with me.

5-0 out of 5 stars SPIRIT BROUGHT FORTH IN THESE DYNAMIC ANIMALS
Tony Stromberg has an eye for lighting and the ability to capture these beautiful animals. He is now using his well known ability to bring awareness to these forgotten horses. He brings hope to this planet of ours and reminds us all of our purpose to use our gifts to help and love all that is around us. I am a book hound. I love books and especially horse books. I believe Tony is the best and I have Spirit Horses as well as this book. Great Christmas Gift to anyone. I know I have bought one for myself as well as friends.
Thanks Tony for your wonderful contribution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why is "Forgotten Horses" Like a Beatles album?
Because it's all hits and no filler.
Page after page of stunning, magnificent horse photography. Stromberg has the eye, the technique and the dedication necessary to produce these exceptional photographs.
Props to him too, for bringing a much needed focus on these neglected and sometimes abused animals.
Tony Stromberg is to horses what Ansel Adams was to mountains...the modern master.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tony Stomberg is a blessing to horses
I have had the pleasure of visiting Tony Stromberg on his ranch and seen
him interact with horses as well as his camera. He has a keen and kind eye and I am really excited about his new book. You will probably want to sit quietly for hours and let the gentle manes of those horses wash over your spirit :)

Excerpt: Alton Glenn Miller (born March 1, 1904 went missing December 15, 1944), was an American jazz musician, arranger, composer, and bandleader in the swing era. He was one of the best-selling recording artists from 1939 to 1943, leading one of the best known "Big bands". Miller's signature recordings include In the Mood, American Patrol, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Tuxedo Junction, Moonlight Serenade, Little Brown Jug and Pennsylvania 6-5000. While traveling to entertain U.S. troops in France during World War II, Miller's plane disappeared in bad weather over the English Channel. His body has never been found. Miller was born on a farm in Clarinda, Iowa, to Mattie Lou (née Cavender) and Lewis Elmer Miller. He went to grade school in North Platte in western Nebraska. In 1915, Miller's family moved to Grant City, Missouri. Around this time, Miller had finally made enough money from milking cows to buy his first trombone and played in the town orchestra. In 1918, the Miller family moved again, this time to Fort Morgan, Colorado, where Miller went to high school. During h...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=64610 ... Read more
