Product Description
The stairwell of New York photographer Mark Seliger may be unadorned, decidedly offstage, and very small, but the creativity of so many talented people jammed into one space is enormous. Each artist, dancer, and writer brings a different personality to the room, and Seliger captures that spirit in each photograph. From Paul McCartney to Susan Sarandon, from Tom Wolfe to Lou Reed, all of the participants in this project demonstrate the greatest integrity and highest creativity in their crafts. Other memorable portraits include those of Tony Hawk, Richard Serra, Bill Irwin, Laurie Anderson, and Lenny Kravitz. All 75 photographs were printed with a turn-of-the-century platinum palladium photographic process, a procedure that results in a highly detailed, rich texture. The images are printed in tritone. Fred Woodward, the prominent New York designer of Rolling Stone and such ground-breaking books as Crazy, Sexy, Cool, is the mastermind behind the book's cutting-edge design. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In My Stairwell
I fought buying this book for years...then I found it for sale used and decided to take the plunge. I am glad I did. This book is funny, sexy, exciting and one or two of the pictures are kind of sad.If you like photos of people....get this book, it is worth the purchase.Have a great day!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good idea - well executed
The concept is simple... Mark Seliger found an abandoned stairwell attached to his studio which had a huge skylight above it. He took some shots with his subjects in the room and then it became his new favourite place to shoot.

It's 170 pages or so and the photogaphs are easily as entertaining as those in his portfolio showcase book, 'Physiognomy'. Mick Jagger, Jerry Seinfeld, Susan Sarandon.... The staircase is the same in every shot, but it's what the celebrity can do with the space that is interesting. The stairwell really does provide a mechanism to make the shot look great and also shift complete focus to the subject.

The book is massive in height which is great because the prints of the images are HUGE! Almost A3 size I think. And from an educational point-of-view I love this book because it shows that while shooting celebrities, and using film, you can still get that point of focus off and still call the image acceptable.

Its expensive, but is also beautiful and highly collectable. ... Read more

Product Description
First-ever look at the intertwining, outrageous lives of three rock legends. When Lou Reed and Iggy Pop first met David Bowie in the fall of 1971, Bowie was just another English musician passing through New York City. Lou was still recovering from the collapse of the Velvet Underground, and Iggy had already been branded a loser... Yet within two years they completely changed the face of popular music with a decadent glamour and street-level vibe. With Bowie producing, Reed's Transformer album was a worldwide hit, spinning off the sleazy street anthem "Walk on the Wild Side." Iggy's Raw Power, mixed by Bowie, provided the mean-spirited, high-octane blueprint for Punk. Bowie boosted elements from both Iggy and Reed to create his gender-bending rock idol Ziggy Stardust. Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell is the story of this friendship and the incredible productivity and debauchery that emerged from it. Presented here for the very first time are their stories interwoven in a triple helix of sexuality, glam rock, and drugs - as seen through the eyes of the people who made it happen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Engrossing
Just finished this book and I found it to be a fun and easy read. It's thoroughly researched and well-paced, and Thompson is an excellent writer. Sure, there are plenty of books that delve deeper into their respective careers, but few focus on their inter-connectedness and relevance during such a pivotal time in 20th century music. Essential for anyone with an interest in dangerous and thought-provoking rock and roll.

4-0 out of 5 stars WorthShelfSpaceCertainly
A little surprised about the prior review. I thought, considering the length and breadth of the subject matter, that for 300 odd pages, Mr. Thompson does an admirable job. Recall, other books on the subject have already been written, see Open Up and Bleed, Waiting for the Man (and the more seedy biographies) and the plethora of Bowie books out there. Like "Bowie in Berlin," gives one more perspective via an examination of the broader context of the players, their influences and subsequent cross pollination. Good Job!Though I think he might have included Nico on the cover as well. (GRIN)

3-0 out of 5 stars Three Glittering Prizes, But short on Details sometimes.
I knew I wanted to Read & learn more about that Magical Pre-Punk Glitter Period where these three Icons Crossed Paths, shared stages & studios. For the Most Part I say Good job to Dave Thompson.
I learned a Lot, But Each time it moved from Guy to Guy, there were more passages that were crying out for More details. Lou went on tour...That was All he Did?? David went to the Studio...& the Album just Popped out, Iggy decided to work again... I hate to say this, But I think I expected More Drug Talk/details. I loved the Inner workings of a Crazy Organization like MAINMAN, But still left wanting to know more of the Details!!

I was just Left a bit Wanting. I Read it Pretty Quickly, & look forward to learning even More about these 3, from more Detailed Books. David Has been dissected in Lots of Books, but Iggy & Lou need more! But their mystique does seem to remain intact, Lou's Especially! Which I think I prefer!

Check this one out, But Don't expect the story to be all Told!

Excerpt: from the album Transformer "Perfect Day" is a song written by Lou Reed in 1972, originally featured on Transformer, Reed's second post-Velvet Underground solo album. Its fame was given a boost in the 1990s when it was featured in the 1996 film Trainspotting, and after its release as a star-studded charity single in 1997. Reed re-recorded the song for his 2003 album The Raven. A cover recorded by Duran Duran reached #28 on the UK Singles Chart in 1995. The original recording, like the rest of the Transformer album, was produced by David Bowie, with guitarist Mick Ronson providing the arrangement. The song has a somber vocal delivery and slow, piano-based instrumental backing balancing tones of sweet nostalgia ("it's such a perfect day, I'm glad I spent it with you") with an undercurrent of menace ("you're gonna reap just what you sow"). The line alludes to Galatians 6:7: "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." The song's lyrics are often considered to suggest simple, conventional romantic devotion, possibly alluding to Reed's relationship with Bettye Kronstadt (soon to become his first wife) and Reeds own conflicts with his sexuality, drug use, and ego. Some commentators have further seen the lyrical subtext as displaying Reed's romanticized attitude towards a period of his own addiction to heroin; this popular understanding of the song as an ode to addiction led to its inclusion in the soundtrack for Trainspotting, a film about the lives of heroin users. Reed's original recording was featured on an AT&T commercial featuring snowboard...http://booksllc.net/?id=848195 ... Read more

(Iam German, so please forgive my English)

I recommend this Book 4 everybody who allready has a Teacher and needs some Pictures for the training without him. The Book has nearly only Photos. Every single Step of one of the two Forms is pichtured with ~10-20 Photos. Text for one of the Steps (read: for 10-20 Photos) ist about 4 Sentences. On the Other Hand ist one of the few Books for Chen Taiji which are not in chinse, so Iam Happy to have at least a little to read.

When i bought it i hoped for way more theoretical Explanations. Thats the reason why only give 4 Stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chen Students - this one's for YOU
If you're studying the Chen Lao Jia and Straight Sword form, this book was written especially for you. For the price, it is a masterpiece. The photography is so well done, in step by step fashion. If you're learning the Lao Jia, this beautiful book will clarify most of your questions (when your Sifu is unavailable).

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Great Tai Chi photography and deep writing
I just started Tai Chi and have been devouring books on the subject. This one, although advanced for me, got my attention with its foreword by Lou Reed. When I read through it, I discovered an incredibly detailed presentation of a long form form and sword form, with tightly written descriptive text that was really different - explaining things such as "energy direction" and where Yin and Yang energy should be for EVERY technique. Most Tai Chi books out there have way too much badly written descriptive text that just confuses people like me and I think most others. But this book is like a work of art. The forms presentation offers real detail and the writing is nuanced and inspirational, disclosing Tai Chi theory and concepts in a manner that gets you thinking. The photography from who I believe is a respected artist, the perfect moves of the master, combined with almost poetically deep writing on the finer aspects of Tai Chi makes this book feel like a collectible. Love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal
You can't learn taiji from a book. Nonetheless, if you're a student of Chen style taiji, and do the Lao Jia Er Lu form, you won't find a better accompaniment to your practice than this book. The pictures are taken in a way that helps you learn the sequence and the structure of the postures. This is a book you'll go back to over and over, finding more and more details to illuminate your practice and improve your form. Ren Guangyi also has recently brought out an excellent DVD of Lao Jia and straight sword, with an innovative "flippervision" section that allows you to watch the form broken down almost inch by inch. Great for practitioners asking "how does the hand move just THERE, and how does it relate to the elbow and hip?" These tools ought to be in every Chen practitioner's library. Students of other styles can learn as well, since all taiji has evolved from the Lao Jia form. One last point: the pictures in the book and the video were taken by Chen practitioners, so they were staged in the most useful way for the student. ... Read more

Product Description
Grandparents Cry Twice: Help for Bereaved Grandparents is a book about grandparents' dual sorrow when a grandchild dies. They cry for their lost grandchild and they also cry for the terrible grief they see their own child having to bear. The author, Mary Lou Reed, writes of her experiences when her beloved grandson, Alex, died. Through her personal story she touches the universal in all grandparents' grief.

In the preface Reed shares excerpts from condolence letters written by the third-grade classmates of Alex's older brother, Curtis, and tells how those letters helped her grieving family.

The first chapters describe the joy felt from Alex's birth, his life, and the agony of his illness and death at two-and-a-half years; the confusion, and the struggle to continue functioning; and Reed's personal frustration with the lack of applicable information about grandparents' grief.

Following chapters look at the grief theories of various authorities and their relevancy for parents and grandparents. Information the author learned from experience, study, and correspondence with other grandparents is used in the chapters on helping themselves, helping the grieving parents, and their surviving children.

Other chapters make suggestions for memorials, and personal rituals as well as how others may assist or hurt. The closing chapter is an overview of the author's journey through grief. Appendices include selected poems, a list of resources, and a bibliography.

Intended Audience: Grandparents who have experienced a death of a grandchild, death educators, grief counselors, psychologists, clergy, college students, self-help support groups, and those who want to understand more about dying and death. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for the torn heart
You must read this to get through the pain and live with the happy memories. This book is for everyone who has loved and lost. Not just grandmothers but mothers, fathers, daughters and sons. We will all be theresome day. Thank you Mary lou for sharing your great loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Perfectly Titled
Mary Lou Reed writes from the heart to share her personal journey as she navigated the various stages of grief upon the death of her beloved grandson Alex.

Ms. Reed's own struggle to balance the deeply seated need to grieve for Alex against the maternal urge to ease the pain of herson--Alex's father--paints the perfect portrait of the double edged griefthat is unique to grandparents.

As informative as a textbook and asheartwrenching as a fine memoir, Mary Lou Reed's sensitive handling of thisdifficult topic provides a one of a kind sourcebook for the bereavedgrandparent.

Bravo Mary Lou!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Grandparents
Ms. Reed does a supurb job of sharing her personal experiences relating to the death of her grandson and her knowledge about the grief process.

I have not experienced the type of loss that Ms. Reed has. I do, however, work with others who have. This book contains much information that couldbe valuable to anyone who has lost a loved one or knows someone whohas.

Besides the valuable information it contains, the book has two otherimportant strengths. First, it contains many references to other books andinformation sources. Second, and more importantly, it introduces us to anindividual we can relate to and care about.

I recommend this book toanyone who wants to have a better understanding of the grief process. ... Read more

The Velvet Underground is an astonishing assembly of rare objects and artworks and the first book of its scale to document the formative years of the band Time Out magazine named the greatest New York musicians of all time. Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Velvet Underground was an American experimental rock band formed in New York City, New York. First active from 1965 to 1973, their best-known members were Lou Reed and John Cale, who both went on to find success as solo artists. Although never commercially successful while together, the band is often cited by many critics as one of the most important and influential groups of the 1960s. The Velvet Underground first gained a degree of fame and notoriety in New York City in 1966 when they were selected as the house band for Andy Warhol's Factory and his Exploding Plastic Inevitable events. The band's lyrics challenged conventional societal standards of the time, and broke ground for other musicians to do the same. The band favored experimentation, and also introduced a nihilistic outlook through some of their music. Their outsider attitude and experimentation has since been cited as pivotal to the rise of punk rock and, later, alternative rock. ... Read more
