Product Description

Modeled after the famed TV sci-fi series The X-Files, The &-Files gathers together a covert body of documents following the long and often controversial career of Art & Text, one of the landmark contemporary art magazines of the 1980s and 1990s. Founded in Melbourne, Australia, in 1981 by Paul Taylor (1957–92), who soon moved to New York City to make his mark as an art critic, the magazine went on to become one of a handful of international art magazines that succeeded in capturing the turmoil and passing brilliance of that period of postmodernism.

Perceived through the eyes and ears of its longtime publisher and editor Paul Foss, The &-Files is comprised of an open letter, a lengthy interview, two questionnaires, and other commentaries and bibliographies, offering a unique insider account of the extraordinary advantages and pitfalls of publishing an art magazine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Way too cute and gimmicky.
In the aftermath of the Potter series many new authors are trying their hands at similar young boy to powerful wizard stories. The Heff and Prineas books are good examples, but the Erec Rex seies is rather tiresome so far (I am about half way through the 1st book and about to give up).I kept waiting for Kingsley to get over his/her (Kaza?) fondness of quirky little magic, funny food/candy, stange new arena game, etc. and actually write a story. The outline looks promising with a mother trying to keep together a large family of adopted children (some with disabilities) on little no money while being pursued by a nefarious evil villian.Kingsley keeps the action up with a strange new thing happening on just about every page, meanwhile the story lags and Erec's whining at his "adoptive" mother is getting old. The mother ending up in some magical prison waiting for her Erec to come to the rescue is also very thin. Take a pass on this series and read some of the other better written ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great and Unique Book
The Dragon's Eye is a very unique book. I can safely say I have never read a book quite like it. Erec has "cloudy thoughts". He feels like his "gift" is more of a curse. But when he meets Bethany and they go to Alypium everything changes. For both of them. It has great mysteries and it is a page turner. This is a great fantasy book! I can't wait to read the rest of the series. If you are a fan of magic, fantasy, and mysteries this is a book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars avid reader
i love this book i read it all in one night then read the rest of the series in the next 2 nights. i'm an avid reader 0f around 13 and highly recomend this book

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fun read!
This book was an extremely fun read! I was intrigued at page 1 and hooked by page 50. It's the first in a series that I could easily see becoming as popular as Harry Potter. It's written as a pre-teens fantasy, but will appeal to readers of all ages. This book follows the adventures of Erec Rex as he searches for his mom and finds himself thrust into a world that he never imagined existed. He explores new lands, meets new people and tries to figure out where he and his mother fit into this bizarre world.

Kingsley did a fantastic job of creating a fun, intriguing world with great characters that you could easily identify with. I loved how she took ordinary, every day things and twisted them up. For example, instead of just using the common name for a fast food place, she called them fastaurants. Just simple things like that added to the feel of the story. Kingsley did a great job of creating suspense, mystery and quite a lot of fun. There were times that I found myself laughing aloud, including a scene with a suit of armor that sent me into a flashback of the days when I watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail over and over again. This first book left quite a lot of mysteries and questions unanswered and I can't wait to pick up the next novel to see what is revealed and to experience more of this great adventure.

I highly recommend this book to everyone that enjoys a great fantasy. And if you personally don't like fantasy, but you have any kids in your life, you should definitely pick this up for them. It'll be a hit!

4-0 out of 5 stars Unexpected Delight
Not going to lie, I did not expect to like this book. Seemed to me like a total Harry Potter knock-off (Charlie Bone anyone?) but it wasn't. It was a really facinating story that I think is great for younger readers. I'm definitely going to reccomend it to middle-graders.

It has the basic "boy-goes-off, possibly-to-save-the-world" theme, but with some interesting twists and loops. I liked seeing into Erec's mind, because he has some interesting thoughts and feelings.
And a big plus, I didn't get frustrated with characters! I get frustrated so often and I didn' t in this book (at least, not with the good guys).

So read it if you like middle grade books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Teriffic Book
I think this book is the BEST book yet in the series yet. It had a lot of action, way more than the previous books. Erec found out he is King Piter's son.Definetly 5 stars! A great read

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great book in the Erec Rex Series
I really love this series! It pulls you in and makes you want to live in Alypium- to make that world REAL. The adventures Erec and his friends go on are so interesting and entertaining. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because I felt like the author, Kaza Kingsley, kept repeating information that we found out earlier in the book, over and over and over again. Also, Erec throughout this book was really wishy-washy with his inner dialoge battles "I should do this, but I don't want to do this. I am going to do this. I'm not going to do this." It got pretty annoying. But overall, fantastic series and The Search For Truth was a great book! I can't wait until the next book in the series, The Furies, comes out in July!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!
This is a great book for all ages and personaly Kaza Kingsley on my top ten chart of great authors right next to Brandon Mull.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trwyth and Consequences
Comparisons with Harry Potter are as unfair as they are inevitable, but I think they can be useful in explaining my widely differing reactions to reading them.Every time I finished a Harry Potter book I wanted to start the next book immediately, but I don't much care whether I read another Erec Rex book or not. After thinking about it a while, I believe this is the primary reason:

World Building.

One of the best things about the Harry Potter series is how Ms. Rowling made her fictional wizard world, hidden just out of sight all around in our muggle world, come seamlessly to life, despite the fact that it was an amalgamation of British Isles legends in particular, European legends in general, and her own rich imagination.Every new revelation seemed to fit perfectly with all that had come before.

In contrast the world of Erec Rex is a clunky combination of ancient myth, our modern world, new age religion, and somewhat questionable attempts at humor.Despite (or because of?) the endless opportunities it offers for bathroom humor, having the contestants fishing their quest assignments out of something called Al's Well that looks like a commode utterly destroyed my attempts to suspend disbelief. As for the new age religious teachings, that either bothers you or it doesn't.I don't much care IF it is believably worked into the plot, but here it stands out like a sore thumb, a bitter reminder that any similar level of watered down secularized Protestantism, like you can find in most old juvenile series books, would be red penciled these days by all but the most overtly Christian publishers of fiction for children.

It probably doesn't help that I was forced by Amazon and the publisher to start with the third book of the series. Some series can be easily entered into anywhere along, but others MUST be started with the first book, and Erec Rex is clearly one of the latter.I think by the end that I was pretty much up to speed on everything I needed to know in order to understand what was going on, but no one in his or her right mind would choose to sample this series in this way.Do yourself a BIG favor and start with The Dragon's Eye then go on to The Monsters of Otherness before reading this book and going on to The Three Furies. As for me, I wouldn't mind reading more Erec Rex books, but I won't mind too much if I never do,...

and that might be the most damning criticism I can offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow
i really liked this sequel to the other erec rex series. the book was truly fantastic and so were the other two. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Monsters of Otherness
I think the Monsters of otherness is amazing. I am in 4th grade and I love it. It is a very exciting book. It made me want to curl up in bed and read the entire day away.It is defintely the best book I ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Erec Rex is at it again!
When I started the second book in the Erec Rex series, I wasn't really sure what to expect. There were all kinds of things I already knew should happen, things I wanted to see happen, but there were some things I really didn't see coming.

It's been a month since the contests ended and Erec has spent that month in "Upper Earth" recuperating with his family, at least until he receives a letter from his friend, Bethany, that says he must return to Alyphium and begin the quests - or he will forfeit his rights to be king. And with the Stain brothers and Rock Rayson gunning for becoming the next kings, Erec cannot have that happen.

Erec returns unaware of what how public opinion views him, King Piter, and the events that happened the month before. The public believes that Erec is an imposter, that he tricked the Lia Fail, and that the three other boys are the rightful winners of the contests. Erec also returns with the internal debate of whether he can handle the scepter or if the power of the scepter will destroy him.

There are many twists and adventures that Erec encounters, some planned, some not. The quests are deadly and terrifying, but as Erec continues them he learns more and more about himself and about the magical world he has entered. There's also the matter of all the baby dragons have gone missing and finding them in time to save them and finding out who has taken them.

Erec also has to delve into The Substance, the very thing that holds their world together, the very magic that encompasses their entire lives. There is something about this world that Erec is drawn into that just seems to encapsulate the reader's attention. The creatures, the people, the places all seem like something straight out of the imagination of someone that's read too many fairy tales, but that's because they basically are. And it's a good thing!

This book could possibly stand on its own, because Ms. Kingsley does seem to go back and do a bit of a recap about things, which I see as a good thing especially for someone that doesn't go into reading the book directly after the first one.

Along with the adventures, there is still plenty of humor and the characters are taken deeper with this book. I have now officially found myself involved in another series that is going to keep me waiting for the next book. It's easy to become involved with the story and care about the characters, I even found myself beginning to tear up at a few parts.

There is something for everyone within this book, whether it's adventure, family, friendship, amusement, or just a story you can get lost in. Most of the time, the second book in a series lacks from the first, and while this one does a little, it doesn't disappoint and still left me wanting more. I found myself with more questions than I started with and most of them were different questions!

So while I did get some questions answered, there were a lot that I was left with. There are six more books slated for the series, so there is plenty of time to get my questions answered! And I can't wait to find these answers. There is so much good about this series so far, that I already know I will spend the next few years involved in these characters - and I can't wait!

Erec returns, unaware of how public opinion views him, King Piter, and the events that happened the month before. The public believes that Erec is an impostor, that he tricked the Lia Fail, and that the three other boys are the rightful winners of the contests. Erec also returns with the internal debate of whether he can handle the scepter or if the power of the scepter will destroy him.

There are many twists and adventures that Erec encounters, some planned, some not. The quests are deadly and terrifying, but as Erec continues he learns more and more about himself and about the magical world he has entered. There's also the matter of all the baby dragons having gone missing and finding them in time to save them and discover who has taken them.

Erec also has to delve into The Substance, the very thing that holds their world together, the very magic that encompasses their entire lives. There is something about this world that Erec is drawn to that just seems to encapsulate the reader's attention. The creatures, the people, the places all seem like something straight out of the imagination of someone that's read too many fairy tales, but that's because they basically are. And it's a good thing!

This book could possibly stand on its own, because Ms. Kingsley does seem to go back and do a bit of a recap about things, which I see as a good thing, especially for someone who doesn't go into reading the book directly after the first one.

Along with the adventures, there is still plenty of humor and the characters are taken deeper with this book. I have now officially found myself involved in another series that is going to keep me waiting for the next book. It's easy to become involved with the story and care about the characters.I even found myself beginning to tear up at a few parts.

There is something for everyone within this book, whether it's adventure, family, friendship, amusement, or just a story you can get lost in. Most of the time, the second book in a series lacks from the first, and while this one does a little, it doesn't disappoint and still left me wanting more. I found myself with more questions than I started with, and most of them were different questions!

So, while I did get some questions answered, there were a lot that I was left with. There are six more books slated for the series, so there is plenty of time to get my questions answered! And I can't wait to find these answers. There is so much good about this series so far, that I already know I will spend the next few years involved in these characters - and I can't wait!

5-0 out of 5 stars Erec Rex - Book 2
This is the second book in the Erec Rex series. The series will have 8 books with the third one coming out this coming June. There are many twists and turns in the second book. I actually predicted some things while reading the book but it didn't make the book any less enjoyable. Erec is portrayed as quite a believable character that has good things about him but also has flaws as well.Unlikely the first Erec Rex book that took me a few chapters to get into it.I was into this book from the first page and it took me less then a week to read it.Kaza has created a very imaginative and creative world that though can be compared to some other fantasy books out there, it is also able to stand on its own. There are many unanswered questions but since there are six more books that will be coming out its understandable.Rex means King in Latin and Erec means Honorable leader and eternal leader. I look forward to reading the rest of the series. Learning more about Erec and the other characters in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars hes groin up.
Erec is going to be a great king.and this book was one of the best with action and suspense at every turn.can't wait for the next one. One if my favorite book series. ... Read more

Product Description
From one of the most important British poets at work today comes a brilliant new collection that meditates on human battles past and present, on youth and age, on monsters and underdogs, on the life of nations and the individual heart.

In Tyrannosaurus Rex Versus the Corduroy Kid, we meet a writer who speaks naturally, and with frankness and restraint, for his culture. Armitage witnesses the pathos of women at work in the mock-Tudor Merrie England coffeehouses and gives us a backstage take on the world of Oliver Twist and the Artful Dodger. He makes a gift to the reader of the sympathy and misery and grit buried in his nation’s collective consciousness: in the distant battle depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry and in the daily lives and petty crimes of ordinary people. In poems that are sometimes lyrical, sometimes brash and comic, and full of living voices, the extraordinary and the mythic grow out of the ordinary, and figures of diminishment and tragedy shine forth as mysterious, uncelebrated exemplars. Armitage tells us ruefully that “the future was a beautiful place, once,” and with a steady eye out for the odd mystery or joyous scrap of experience, examines our complex present instead.

AFTER THE HURRICANE

Some storm that was, to shoulder-charge the wall
in my old man’s back yard and knock it flat.
But the greenhouse is sound, the chapel of glass
we glazed one morning. We glazed with morning.
And so is the hut. And so is the shed.

We sit in the ruins and drink. He smokes.
Back when, we would have built that wall again.
But today it’s enough to drink and smoke
amongst mortar and bricks, here at the empire’s end. ... Read more

Product Description

Alfred Jarry is regarded as one of the founders of modern avant-garde theatre— “Dada, Surrealism, Pataphysics, Theatre of Cruelty, the Absurd—all owe a debt to Jarry.” (Encore)This volume contains his three classic Ubu texts: Ubu Roi, Ubu Cocu and Ubu Enchaîné.Through the lucid translations of Connolly and Taylor, the reader comes to realize that the violent and loathsome Ubu is Jarry’s dark metaphor for man in the modern age.As Ubu himself said, “We shall not have succeeded in demolishing everything unless we demolish the ruins as well.”

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Translation
I have read other worthy translations of the Ubu plays but from what I can tell so far, this is one of the best, if not the best, translations I have read so far. The scatological humor shows through strongly on every page and the dialogue flows nicely. The book also offers some well-written background on Jarry's life and works, which makes the book useful not only from a theatrical standpoint, but from an academic one as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incoherent Rubbish from a Drunk
Jarry, a semi-psychotic, flaccid, career drunk, who once attacked Proust with a pen knife, and masterminded an invasion upon the Notre Dame cathedral with an army of beggars, is hardly even worth mentioning in the domain of great literature, it is in fact, a fact, that he only wrote bland comic monstrosities which aren't even very interesting. His structure is incoherent and reminscent of a lunatic who blathers out underdeveloped nonsense.Maybe if he had invested some time on organization instead of drinking Absinthe all day, he could have achieved some appreciation for great words of art.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Only True Dada Book
King Turd is a French play written by Alfred Jarry. At the time he wrote the play he was 15 years old. King Turd is a collection of three plays Ubu Roi, Ubu Enchaine, and Ubu Cuco. He wrote the play Ubu Roi to perform with marionettes for some cash in 1888. The play was first performed with live actors in 1896.
Ubu Roi was the first to be written, it follows the story of Papa Turd and Mama Turd who try overthrowing the government to become the king and queen of Poland. Ubu Enchaine was written after Alfred Jarry some wrote other plays. It is the exact opposite of Ubu Roi following Papa Turd and Mama Turd as they try to become slaves. Ubu Cuco is a considerably headier story then the previous. The plot follows Papa Turd's encounters many gods, the higher class, and his conscience.
The story is usually considered a satire of Shakespeare. That is true, many of the characters are very similar to characters in plays by Shakespeare. But Ubu is also a satire of everything in late 19th century France. Things like money grabbing politicians and a stupid public are still around today. Therefore it is still relevant. Because Ubu Roi was written by a 15 year old it contains very simple language and is often nursery rhyme like. If you can read French it is better to read the book in French to catch all the word puns that Alfred Jarry wrote.
The character of Papa Turd is one of the most interesting characters I have ever met in a book. He was one of the first characters in a novel to use language that is still considered naughty over 100 years later. The character of Papa Turd can be seen through his master plan "start by grabbing all the money, then kill everybody and leave." King Turd is an extremely humorous book. It is highly recommended to someone who wants something more then Shakespeare and the Family Circus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read and Compare Translations
By my Green Candle !!Jarry is very difficult to translate from the French, so be sure to read and compare various translations to really get the feel, if you don't read French. Well worth the effort, and this volume is a fine place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wild book!
This is a school joke that has evolved into an epic! McLeish's translation takes a lot of liberties and sometimes many things are lost. On the other side, he possesses great wit and through compensation, his work comes out as one of the best translations! ... Read more

Excerpt: World War II Ronald Niel Stuart VC DSO RD RNR (26 August 1886 8 February 1954) was a British Merchant Navy commodore and Royal Navy captain who was highly commended following extensive and distinguished service at sea over a period of more than thirty-five years. During World War I he received the Victoria Cross, the Distinguished Service Order, the French Croix de Guerre avec Palmes and the United States' Navy Cross for a series of daring operations he conducted while serving in the Royal Navy during the First Battle of the Atlantic. Stuart's Victoria Cross was awarded following a ballot by the men under his command. This unusual method of selection was used after the Admiralty board was unable to choose which members of the crew deserved the honour after a desperate engagement between a Q-ship and a German submarine off the Irish coast. His later career included command of the liner RMS Empress of Britain and the management of the London office of a major transatlantic shipping company. Following his retirement in 1951, Stuart moved into his sister's cottage in Kent and died three years later. A sometimes irascible man, he was repor...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2254408 ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not the book it could have been
Quality, not quantity, Jack. This kind of thing slips out when you begin to believe your own legend. This book could have been so much more ifit had not been dumbed-down.Not to kid level, but far enough to be below thelevel of the average buyer of this book.As it is, it stands in the way ofthe book that will not now be written, with more info on other members ofthe tyrannosaur tribe, f'rinstance. You're capable of better. Write fewer, but better books.
