Reynolds draws on his own critical analyses of the work of internationally prominent performance artists Reverend Billy and the Critical Art Ensemble, as well as the radical Free Theatre Christchurch (New Zealand), as he builds his contention that the success of these political theatres springs from their aesthetics rather than their politics per se.To construct his idea of "moving targets" Reynolds expertly taps into a wide range of cultural and performance theories in close readings that, while expert, remain accessible to the general reader.

For Reynolds, we are in a time when any political interventionis generally seen as a senseless disruption, a form of pointless violence, and as such it is possible that the strategies of radical theatres must mirror those of terrorists in attempting to rupture the status quo without necessarily providing a satisfying resolution.

I absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in theatre as a tool to resist the mechanisms of our current society. It is a provocative analysis in this period of late capitalism, of political theatre, which is forced into constantly redefining itself in order to avoid castration as political action and reconstitution into consumable entertainment. Baudrillard and Zizek have already likened terrorism to a theatrical action and I found Reynolds' contribution to this discussion fascinating and exciting. His own experiences propel this thorough and radical work.
