5-0 out of 5 stars Southern New England in all its glory!
The Smithsonian Natural Guides are my new bibles for travel. Who really cares about those guides for motels, restaurants and cheesy attractions anyhow? These guides take one to the real America behind (and often above) the tourist traps!

Finch and Wallen team up to the best of their expertise with splendid descriptive writing and photography (the latter always a trademark of this series!). Cape Cod, The Berkshires, the Connecticut and Rhode Island Coasts as well as other areas of natural interest are brought right to the reader and make you want to go there immediately and see what you've just read about. ... Expensive, worth every last cent. Wonderful work and exceptional photographics. Wont be parting with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of My First Wearable Art Books--Incredibly Inspirational
When I was just getting started in wearable art, I happened across this book, then only available in the library.I was transported into Zandra Rhodes's creative vision and found her an incredible inspiration for my own work which ensued. One thing which instantly set Rhodes apart was that she had to be in on the ground floor of the creation of the fabric, not just the design of the clothing. This mirrored my own interest, as working with someone else's fabric creation seemed to doom the process from the start. I can't say that my own subsequent work looked anything like Rhodes's work but being let in on the way she thinks and creates, seeing her ideas come to life, that was what was important.I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone interested in ornamental art or fashion design.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Zandra Rhodes
As a student of Art and Fashion I discovered this treasure in the college library and borrowed it relentlessly.Only the designs of the late Ertehave given me such awe of creation. This book truly showcases the essenceof Zandra's textile and clothing masterpieces.By way of photographs, sketches, diary, andtravelogue we're given colorful insight to the thoughtprocesses supporting her works of design.Though Rhodes flourished in70's/80's Britain, she was one of the first designers to really tap intothe current theme of multicuturalism. She takes the world around her andtransforms it magically to her own artform. Anyone interested in Fashion,Art, or Design will appreciate this book's concept. ... Read more

Product Description
In the fifteenth century the printing press was the 'new technology'.The first ever information revolution began with the advent of the printed book, enabling Renaissance scholars to formulate new ways of organizing and disseminating knowledge. As early as 1500 there were already 20 million books in circulation in Europe. How did this rapid explosion of ideas impact upon the evolution of new disciplines?
The Renaissance Computer looks at the fascinating development of new methods of information storage and retrieval which took place at the very beginning of print culture. It also asks some crucial questions about the intellectual conditions of our own digital age.A dazzling array of leading experts in Renaissance culture explore topics of urgent significance today, including the contribution of knowledge technologies to state formulation and national identity; the effect ofmultimedia, orality and memory on education; the importance of the visual display of information and how search engines reflect and direct ways of thinking. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars God, what a great book, but beware of history nerds!
This book is a set of essays passing on the lessons of old to a generation who could really gain from an understanding of past and similar events.

Each author gets a chance to illustrate how the contentious events following the invention and deployment of printing technology mirrors the frustration of our current explosion of information. Its scarry how similar things are.

But this isn't simply a bunch of writings by a bunch of history nerds. These guys go way beyond, and its for this insightful vision that the book is worth far more than its asking price.

History has a great way of repeating itself, and its powerful to leverage history's lessons if one wants to lift himself above the fog of the tail chasers.

One author (sorry, I forget who) talks about how reading morphed from a verbal and social activity to one characterised by silence and solitude, and how the computer may allow us back to the social impacts of storytelling. This is notable because we all know how much more is retained when you read aloud and when it becomes a social activity.

But one essay in particular takes the reader into the dialog of 1500 something or other and I gotta be honest, I don't care _that_ much about history.Plus, almost all authors make the mistake of assuming the reader knows who they are talking about.

There's history buffs and there's those who are interested in history from a practical perspective. For the most part this book is for the practical.

Some of the authors could have benefited by realizing the powerful applicability of their work, and thus written it for the Homo-erectus man like me.

But I really enjoyed this book, I read it in just under a week, and I have a two year old and a newborn. There were times when I was wishing there was a way to write the authors to thank them for their good work. Then it occurred to me that I could by writing a review on Amazon. ... Read more

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Delve into what it was like to live during the eighteenth century by reading the first-hand accounts of everyday people, including city dwellers and farmers, businessmen and bankers, artisans and merchants, artists and their patrons, politicians and their constituents. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great alternative to video games!
Looking for a birthday gift (15th birthday) for my son that would spark some interest to do something besides playing video games led me to this Lego product and I must say the venture was successful. He has truly enjoyed using his "mind" and "hands" to build his robots and looks forward to coming home after school to do just that instead of craving the Playstation as before.I have to "restrict" his time playing video games but with the Lego NXT he can build at will which is also a real plus. The unit has worked well thus far and at this point my only criticism of the product is that it does not come with a good storage case for all the pieces (you'll have to buy something to do this or pieces are likely to get lost and it is difficult to keep things organized without a storage unit).I also bought two Lego NXT guide books in addition to the unit which have proven worthwhile as the included book is much more limited on what all you can build with the kit.My son has said that he would like to pursue an engineering degree now when he attends college as he would love to continue to design and build new products (such as cars) as a result of his experience with this Lego kit.It is expensive when you look at this set as just another Lego set...but to me it is priceless to see him creating functional robots that makes him and I both feel very proud of his accomplishments in building one that works as intended and all while the Playstation sits and collects dust...what could be better!!I guess only some gift like a bicycle or such that gets your kids outdoors and active could be better than something like this but for now I think I've found a perfect gift to make him active inside his mind.I do know that over time I will probably have to buy add on kits to keep this NXT kit interesting but I'll gladly fork out the money to do so as to me this has been a great alternative to video games!! I grew up playing with Lego's and now I can watch my son do the same...outstanding product!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informational!
You would need this book if you own the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Kit.Can't get it work without it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Pictures and programming problems
The problem with this book is it has black and white photos of black and white pieces. They don't give a close up of what your adding to your structure. Writing is too small to look at without a magnify glass.
Programming was screwed up in some places.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Book On NXT Robots
Lots Of good information on NXT G-code,Bluetooth programming for the NXT, and an informative guide to designing your NXT bots.I thought this book was well worth the money. The "LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT-G Programming Guide (Technology in Action) is a very good intro to this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
The LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Idea Book: Design, Invent, and Build

I read this book and I really enjoyed it.This was the first Mindstorms book that I read and it was really easy to understand and got me off to a quick start. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars was that the graphics and text are printed on an off white background and it made it a little harder to read and the graphics themselves are all black and white and some of them were a little hard to figure out the robot designs because of it.But dont let this keep you from getting this great robotics book. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Mindstorms Book
It's a book full of ideas, 10 great inventions. It's a bit confusing while programming but that's OK.

1-0 out of 5 stars sheila
agree, an interesting book, but I don't know what "one kit" they are talking about.we've tried 3 projects and every one has a number of key pieces that are not in the Nxt kit.actually, we have about 20 large lego sets and we still didn't have the right pieces.Additionally, we found the illustrations hard to see- black and white did not give enough detail.it was too dark to see in many instances. very disappointed with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but tough for kids
I bought this book for my seven year old son. He finds it difficult to understand the images. I have to constantly help him to build the models. I think if the images were colored he might have had a better chance of understanding. I very well understand that would have increased the price of the book exponentially. I book has good ideas but might be difficult for kids to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING for the NXT in the GREY and GOLD BOX !
Very Inspiring book, a must for any serious NXT fan who love to learn from the masters by inspecting every aspect of the designs for fun and inspiration (like i do) then it doesn't matter what NXT set you own or is available at school but if the book owner plans on building the actual robots (10 of them) and has little LEGO TECHNIC available beside the parts in the NXT, then you need the first RETAIL NXT kit that has been on sale since 2006. TODAY LEGO repackaged the same NXT brick in a new version 2.0 and changed the parts in the box!

So this book may not be the best one to get along with a the new NXT 2.0 kit, the WHITE and BLUE box
It is however a great gift to give someone with the original NXT 1.0 (GREY and GOLD box) or someone who just loves any NXT ideas!

4-0 out of 5 stars Assumes NXT 1.0
I liked the book, but it assumes that you are using the NXT 1.0 set and it turns out the sets have different parts. So when I purchased the book I found out that I could only make a few of the items.I have since purchased the additional parts I needed and can build them all now, but it was a little bit of a let down when I received the book and could not build them all. ... Product Description
The stirring, full-color oral biography of the singer whose pure, haunting voice came to be loved by millions around the world after her tragically brief life.

Eva Cassidy's albums Songbird, Live at Blues Alley, Eva By Heart, Time After Time, and Imagine have sold over a million and a half copies in the U.S. and millions more worldwide. Her songs have been heard on many television shows and film soundtracks, and the video of her classic performance of "Over the Rainbow" is the most requested in BBC history. Yet she lived to see only one of her solo albums released, a CD she underwrote herself and sold from the trunk of her car before her tragic death.

Capturing Eva's essence and tender life story, Eva Cassidy: Songbird collects the intimate memories of relatives, close friends, and the musicians who collaborated with her. The book tells the story of her too-brief life and enduring music. Featuring candid full-color photos and reproductions of Eva's original artwork, a vivid portrait emerges of a woman who devoted her energies to the things she truly loved-giving encouragement to those around her, tending to plants at the nursery where she worked, and performing her music at clubs in Washington, D.C. She succumbed to cancer at age thirty-three just as the world was starting to notice her arresting voice.

Eva Cassidy's music continues to grow in recognition from critics and legions of fans throughout the world. The rock icon Sting has said her voice possesses "a magical quality. People respond to its purity. It suggests something ethereal-something unattainable." This American edition contains two new chapters about her influences and her posthumous success in her native country. With the publication of Eva Cassidy: Songbird, the woman behind the unforgettable voice will at last be known. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gone too soon
Excellent book about the tragically short life of Eva Cassidy, who was a beautiful singer and artist. Her voice, once heard, cannot be forgotten. This story of her life is only the beginning...discovering Eva's music makes it all complete.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad tale of a multi talented lady
Eva Cassidy was a major talent that wasn't really discovered till a year after she passed away from cancer! She could sing almost any song and stamp it with her fantastic voice and style! This book tells her life story!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a bittersweet story
Ever since David Archuleta mentioned her name on The View I have been enjoying this angel's songs. She had such a beautiful voice and was really just beginning to realize her talent when she passed from her earthly body.I now own 5 of her CDs and my favorite songs include True Colors, I Know You By Heart, Time Is a Healer, and How Can I Keep From Singing. The quality on most of the albums is very good and it amazes me that some of the recordings were completed after her death using rough recordings and making them so beautiful.Thank You David for introducing me to Eva.

5-0 out of 5 stars Purest Voice of a Complex Woman
Eva Cassidy, it is stated in the beginning of this book, was not an angel. She had the voice of one, as anyone who has heard her sing a note will attest.Struck down by malignant melanoma at the criminally early age of 33 in 1996, she was virtually unknown in America, though her career was starting to gain notice in other countries.

The story of her life is told through the reminiscences of her family and friends. She is universally held to have been a very kind woman, but one with a wall within which she protected herself from pain by not letting too many people in.She had a very difficult time showing her vulnerability, and was extremely fragile in public performance. That we have as much of her on video and CD as we do is a miracle in light of this.

Her relationship with her father was a difficult one, though it seems to have been moving in a more positive direction as she was getting older. Her father himself shoulders some of the burden for this state of affairs, indicating that being his child was probably not the easiest thing.Eva, being such a self-critical perfectionist, might have found it more challenging than most.

I was heartbroken to discover that she loathed my favorite album, Live at Blues Alley. She thought the quality was not present, and it made her angry. This is the one I turn to most often when I need an "Eva Fix," so knowing this made me incredibly sad.But then, she constantly doubted any compliments to her singing. She reacted to positive comments with disbelief more often than not.I'm glad she wasn't a diva, but sorry she didn't have some of the confidence she had earned.

This book is chock-full of candid photos of Eva from throughout her life, and has a great many examples of her sublime artwork.I won't ever be parting with this, because I'll want to page through it again and again, to enjoy her visual talent, as I listen to her sing to me.Her voice has the pure, raw amazing skill to sooth life's rough edges. How sad that we didn't have her for a bit longer, but how blessed we are to have had her at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
This book includes everything you want to know about Eva. I really suggest this to everyone. Its a book for life.. ... Read more
