Product Description

Sir Cliff Richard has sold more than 250 million records around the world since he burst onto the music scene in 1958. In a world fuelled by drink, sex, and drugs, he is perennially attractive without any of those things that keep other singers' profiles high. Now, working with the highly acclaimed biographer and journalist Penny Junor, Cliff speaks freely and frankly about his 50 years in pop music, including a chapter on America and many mentions of his U.S. tours. Inspirational and hugely talented, his extraordinary story is one to read and treasure for the next 50 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Life without Cliff
Being a Cliff Richard Fan since my 8th birthday (1968), I try to get as much info
about him as I can. I like the biography written by himself because I got a
closer look and a better understanding of him, his thoughts about religion and his
whole life. I would highly recommend this book to anybody who is a Cliff Fan.
But I also gave my book to a friend of mine who has never heard of him or his music
before, and even she liked the book, found it interesting and liked the 'main character'.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Life, My Way
This latest autobiography from Cliff Richard (ghosted by Penny Junor) is a fantastic look at his life as it is as a "sexygenarian". The book has a very conversational style that sounds like he's there telling you all his stories in person. It's not bogged down by a chronological detailed account of his life and career; rather he talks about key moments in his life and intertwines them with other anecdotes and issues important to him. In this book Cliff comes across as a very human, normal (albeit very wealthy) person rather than a larger-than-life rock star. At times throughout the book though he gets grumpy; he gets on his hobby horse about favourite topics; and at times he's also incredibly funny, e.g. the spider phobia story. Most surprising for me, having been a very enthusiastic Cliff fan for over 20 years, is that there was plenty of information there that I didn't know before or had forgotten about. It also gives more of an insight into his personality. A very easy and entertaining read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book by a great guy
Cliff Richard, My life My way.

This is a good read.Cliff's life told by himself, very honest and open and indicative of the man himself. He is one of music's giants, has a wonderful sense of humour and touched all the while by his Christian beliefs. He has never wavered in his faith, he is a musical Billy Graham and one of the the most admired people.

Buy this book if you want to know more about this man, you will love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest Feelings From A Pop Icon
I have been a huge Cliff Richard fan since attending a concert in 1981. After the concert, I did some research on this talented man and I was surprised to discover that he had been around since 1958 and was fairly responsible for the career of Olivia Newton-John. I have read a couple of biographies on him but I felt I found out a lot more about him from reading his book. How refreshing for someone to admit that you have to be vain and ambitious when going into show business. The parts of the book when he talks about his family were very introspective and appealing. When he talks about his feelings about his conversion and his mother's illness and death it was very revealing and touching. I have always had a lot of respect for this man as an entertainer and now I have a lot of respect for him as a human being. His voice is absolutely fabulous and his charitable work is very admirable. If you want to learn more about this remarkable man, GET THIS BOOK!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Life, My Way by Cliff Richard
With My Life, My Way, Cliff Richard shares the details of his success. I never realized just how successful he is until I read this book. He is truly a man to be very proud of. He is honest to a fault, forthright, charitable, energetic, and complete with hard working talent on stage and off. I am proud to have purchased this book and been a part of his reading audience. As an American I can honestly say that he has been sorely missed. Thanks to this book, he has filled part of a gaping hole.

Cliff starts by focusing on the early years of his life; born in India, living a very comfortable life with his parents and suddenly being cast into a life of poverty in Britain.Living a life similar to many Americans in the 1950's and 1960's his story gives me a deep appreciation for the financial struggles of his home life. He has an innate love for his parents, siblings and extended families. A quality most celebrities won't share in the detail that Cliff shares. Cliff opens his heart and shares the blessings of his life. This book is as moving as it is funny and sad. He is both smart and quick witted.

This is the material that documentaries are made of. In this book he defines his success in the UK and the doors that were slammed shut on him in America. Not only did Cliff miss out on the American music scene, but as Americans we lost Cliff.

Not unlike others of his early career, far too much credit is given to Elvis Presley. Cliff has his own musicality. Cliff has a voice that is naturally as easy on the ears as Elvis's was. Elvis was a cultural icon born of rockabilly. Was it really Elvis who dressed the 50's and 60's or did those years dress Elvis? There is something much bigger than Elvis that took place in Richard's life and all readers will understand that through this book.As children we see something or someone that becomes our choice for a career path. For Cliff it was Elvis who sparked the fire inside of him.

4-0 out of 5 stars a clean life
_Cliff Richard: The Biography_ is a thrilling book about a talented fellow who used to be one of my best friends--and I actually have some true inside information, an essential anecdote that got omitted from this otherwise remarkable book.I'm referring, of course, to Cliff's conversion at Billy Graham's 1966 London Crusade.Billy drew a huge audience that night, a crowd of almost 27,000 (not like in the Fifties, but hey) - and let me tell you something:when the Rev. Billy Graham preached that evening at Earls Court, he laid out the Lord's plan of salvation with so much clarity, and he spoke with such deep spiritual conviction, and he communicated with such down-home North Carolina eloquence, that - well, I don't remember what, because I fell asleep.I did not awake until the altar call, when the stadium organist began to play the Billy Graham theme song, "Just as I am, without one plea."But I felt truly sorry afterward because something lamentable happened while I was napping. That is the very night on which the legendary and very cute pop singer, Cliff Richard, believed, and got saved.

I was totally gobsmacked.Good Lord, Cliff Richard was practically John Lennon's twin - they were born the same week, October 1940.Well, it just goes to prove:you win some, you lose some.(So much for horoscopes!)

I had no inkling Cliff was even in the audience that night until it was too late for me to save him from getting saved.Totally bummed me out!My pals Beelzebub and Belial had not yet forgiven me for letting Little Richard (no relation to Cliff Richard) slip through my fingers, in 1957.They'd tease the bejeezus out of me when they learned that I had just lost another one, stolen right out from under my nose.A hip-swinging spawn of Elvis, Cliff was a rockabilly star whose hits included "Schoolboy Crush" and "Living Doll."I thought I already had him in my back pocket for eternity.Obviously, not.

And here's the anecdote. This really happened:When Cliff walked forward to receive Christ that night, and met with a spiritual counselor, he begged for help:already, he had indulged in sexual intercourse twice, he said, and he had also drunk himself silly, three times.

"Oh my, that is a lot for one day!" gasped the young counselor, thrilled to be speaking with Cliff Richard but privately horrified by his sins and trying not to let it show.Evidently, a special case.Cliff was introduced to Billy.

"No, no, not today," explained Cliff to Billy Graham."In my whole entire life."

Even Billy Graham was a little surprised. Here was a young pop star, 26 years old, appearing on every published list of the ten sexiest men in Britain.Who would've thought he needed help?Clearly, he did need help -

Too late, Lucifer!Cliff was now in the Lord's hands, the poor devil. Why, I have known 26-year-old Tibetan monks who have scored more often than that.

That same night, Cliff promised to the Lord, and to Billy, and to his fans, that he would never-ever have ordinary two-person sex again. And he never did.He promised to give up drinking. He did that, too.To stop swinging his hips when dancing.Done.Not to dance at all when singing such possibly suggestive tunes as "Move It!"Done. No more trying to out-Elvis Elvis with such movie roles as Bongo Herbert the drum-thumping troubadour, or Don the dancing garage mechanic (Espresso Bongo [1959]; Summer Holiday [1960]).Done and done.I never saw a man so utterly transformed by the power of Christ, unless maybe, on the other end of the moral spectrum, Richard Milhouse Nixon, whom Billy Graham also saved.

- L.

P.S. to Beatles fans:Sir Cliff Richard is now pushing seventy while your idol and mine, John Lennon, is pushing daisies.Cliff is a knight of the realm. He is still singing for the Lord, and he is still looking pretty damned attractive, thanks to a unique combination of Botox and clean living. If Cliff ever changes his mind about getting married, I can think of a thousand middle-aged guys who would say yes in a second. So maybe you should think twice before you follow John

5-0 out of 5 stars A page turner
I couldn't put the book down until I'd read the last page.Sir Cliff is truly one of the most admirable men I've read about. He has worked very hard to be where he is now. He deserves all the accolades bestowed on him. I first heard him in 1963 while growing up in the Philippines, andI'll always love him and his music. Cliff Richard: The Biography ... Read more

Product Description

Cliff Richard has been Britain’s longest surviving and most consistent hit music maker. Starting his career as a rock ’n’ roll threat to decent, upstanding citizens, he is now a friend to Royalty and prime ministers, a Knight, and a holder of the OBE. This book tells his story chronologically, through the voices of his friends, family, and colleagues including songwriters, film directors, managers, and agents—like listening in on a dinner party attended by most of the key people in his career. The stories reveal Cliff as seen by those closest to him and, in contrast to the many official publications, this book does not just include the flattering stories. The author’s probing questions have elicited extraordinary memories and observations, previously unheard by the public. Heavily illustrated with rare and interesting photographs of Cliff at work and play, this unique oral history will stand as a lasting testament to one of the most glorious careers in British show business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully deep and compelling
I am an English teacher and a book lover to the extreme.I use cliff notes in my class to aid students with ideas and concepts in books that might otherwise be lost on them.I like the fact that the summaries are limited on this particular version, so the students are forced to read and reread to comprehend. The book itself is one of the most beautiful, well-written, symbolic books that I have ever read.I suggest using it in a unit on South Africa, apartheid/segregation, racism, Black History, or perhaps as a tool on train-of-thought writing. The book is for mature readers--average or immature students will find the book "boring" because they are unable to comprehend the depth and meaning of the novel. The Cliff Notes should help somewhat with these students--but some could never appreciate the work even with the supplement.
For those who are not teachers, and are reading for enjoyment, the cliff notes are also good just to reinforce the concepts and make your reading experience easier. However, be sure to actually read the beautiful novel itself--the harsh truths and beautiful symbols of this book are aure to enlighten.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL, INSPIRING, PHENOMENAL
I personnally thought this book was great! And, that's suprising cuz I had to do it for an english assignment, and yet, i even loved the book (that's rare!)I reccomend it to all!

If anyone can show me a worse book I will be amazed. Yes I suppose it had a good message but really he could have done it in a more interesting way. Really George Orwell could do it so why can't he. Anyone feel like chuckingrotten eggs at Patons door? Yes I thought so.

4-0 out of 5 stars I thought that the morals and themes were good and true.
I thought that the book was very good overall. It did have drawbacks though. Some of the things I thought were not very interesting. But I thought that the court scenes and racisim scenes were very well written.Icould very well imagine myself in the position of characters.Thecharacters were good also. There is a lot in it about fear.It describesthe fear and suffering the feel very well. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A useful, if somewhat annoying (to me) guide
There are some very good points about this guide, and one point that made me want to tear it in half; I will try to describe it so that the reader can make their own decision.

I think that Snow Falling on Cedars: A Novel was a so-so book.I found it uninvolving, and I cannot see why one would bother reading it when there are so many excellent non-fiction works on the themes. Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James Houston wrote a classic book on the internment called Farewell to Manzanar: A True Story of Japanese American Experience During andAfter the World War II Internment. Mary Matsuda Gruene wrote another book: Looking Like the Enemy: My Story of Imprisonment in Japanese American Internment Camps, and she has a bibliography listing many other books about the Japanese-American experience.Matsuda, incidentally, came from a family of strawberry farmers living on an island in the Puget Sound. People interested in the lives of fisherfolk can read HUNGRY OCEAN, THE: A SWORDBOAT CAPTAIN'S JOURNEY, Beautiful Swimmers: Watermen, Crabs and the Chesapeake Bay, The Lives of Men, The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea (P.S.), etc.

Having warned of my basic lack of enthusiasm, the majority of the Cliff Notes is a competent and useful guide. One of the best parts of the guide is that Wasowski has provided lists explaining a variety of terms, including boating, fishing, contemporary slang, Japanese words, etc. I hope that the authors of some other guides will take a lesson.

I think that there are two missing themes. One is the position of women in the family. Some people will not find it odd that Carl and Kabuo feel little need to consult their wives when making decisions that affect their entire family, but some people today will find strange; it was much more common during the period when this is set than it is today. Guterson cannot really address that directly, but I think it would help if it were in this guide. The other issue, which neither the guide nor Guterson seem to recognize is that Etta does the same thing to her son, Carl, that she does to Kabuo: she deprives him of the opportunity to make his living on land his family owned. If Kabuo feels strongly about land that his family owned for seven years, how might Carl feel about land that has been in the family for several generations?

On the minus side is a vehement objection which I am certain many literary students will not understand.Wasowski commments the "Some question Guterson's style ... or else they think he just didn't succeed in what he attempted to do." He responds to the criticism: "Most readers tend to recognize that prejudice on either side of a relationship can lead to misunderstandings and that someone living with one foot in two different cultures is not fully part of either."

Since I often receive similar comments when I criticize "serious fiction", it is presumably necessary to point out that his response is a non sequitor, from the Latin "it does not follow", meaning "a statement (as a response) that does not follow logically from or is not clearly related to anything previously said."(Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged. Merriam-Webster, 2002, online, Oct 31, 2006).

Whether or not one likes Guterson's style does not necessarily have anything to do with whether or not one understands the pressures of conflicting loyalties. One could understand perfectly and still not like Guterson's book. Themes are different from writing techniques. Perhaps Wasowski means to say that Guterson's development of the theme is so good, so novel, and so important as to make wading through his verbosity worthwhile. I wouldn't agree, but that at least would make sense.

A useful companion to the book, if not a great example of clarity in writing. ... Read more

This is a good handbook to have. The summaries are useful and it contains some diagrams that help you figure out some of the more confusing parts of the novel.Helpful in trying to understand a sometimes difficult novel.

3-0 out of 5 stars Use This Correctly and Don't Cheat!
This is not the Wuthering book by Emily Bronte. It is a Cliffs Notes Study Guide version. This is good to read but only if you have read the whole book by Bronte and you have to write a book report and just need some references from the Cliff Notes version if there was something in the book that you didn't understand. Don't try to con your teacher by only reading the Cliff Notes version. Just read the book and read a great story and impress your teacher. It always amazes me how dumb some students can be by trying to cheat with Cliff Notes, I mean the teacher always can tell when someone has done it too so it's not like they are fooling anyone. Product Description

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting but too much socialism
The first chapter was a little boring as the first chapter of most books are, but then it got a lot more interesting. It was very interesting, but also quite depressing because of the hopelessness of their lives and somany people die. It gets really boring at the end, though, when all ittalks about for several chapters is how wonderful socialism is and howterrible capitalism is. These last few chapters are the reason I didn'tgive this book 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening look into the past
This book was wonderful.I was forced to read it for my Sociology class at Michigan State University. The first chapter dragged on, and I was wondering what I was forced into. Then as the chapters ran on, they becamemore and more interesting.I didn't want to put it down!Review: gorry,mind-opening, fantastic, almost unbelievable as to what those people had toendure at the turn of the century in Industrial America
