Fantastic
Winnowill is at her worst and Rayek is shockingly (almost endearingly) vulnerable as the target of her latest manipulation.So our arrogant SharpDark Highthing desires not only power beyond his wildest dreams, he wants to be loved...

True to the original quest, the book is packed with dramatics: the reunion of Dewshine and Scouter, Two-Edge's confrontation with Clearbrook, Tyldak being noble, a last minute rescue from a soul-brother, Leetah grappling with Cutter's mortality, elfin homocide, and the final destruction of Blue Mountain.

Of course, its always refreshing when an under-exposed character finally gets his chance to save the day.Go Dart!AOOOOYAAAH! ^_~My only quarrel is with Aroree, who has been reduced to a powerless, doe-eyed victim whose only hobby seems to be stalking Skywise.

Great book
Fantastic pictures.Tells of how the wolfriders escape from Blue Mountain(again)and more.

Uncovers a lot of hidden secrets of Two-Edge, and of Willow.
This book is great, because it uncovers the truth about Two-Edg's birthand childhood. Also it gives more description on how Winllow used to be,before she became evil. For the first time you se what Two-Edg's fatherlooked like. I rcomend this book to big Elf Quest fans every where. ... Read more

ElfQuest Book 2: The Forbidden Grove
If you've read ElfQuest Book 1: Fire and Flight, be prepared to be astounded again. This book is the continuation of the plot of the first book, (indubitably). Within Forbidden Grove, the beginning of the truequest [the first of many of the ElfQuest series] actually begins -- pleasesay"Wow" if you have only read EQ book one thusfar. This noveltakes place seven years after the finale of book one, and it opens the sagathat eventually lead to the ongoing storyline(s) for the next twenty years.Cutter, leader of the Wolfrider tribe, has found peace and serenity in hisnew home along with the other members of his tribe (and family, if youhaven't yet read bookone!). However, there stirs a longing in him, a new"need" to be fulfilled. He sets out, with friend Skywise, intothe unexplored direction to find answerss; and unexpected surprises, astheir journeyings reveal. While he and Skywise are away, the other membersof the tribe are compelled to follow him: one exceptionally intuitivecharacter has overwhelming feelings of doom, ones that the tribe feel canonly be quelled by finding and averting Cutter in his path. An excellent,excellent book.

i like to swing
Swinging is fun. I like it. The feel of the wind flowing past your face is indescribable. Pumping your legs to get higher and higher. Sometimes jumping off at the pivotal moment but returning to claim your swing oncemore. There is nothing like it in this whole big universe. The book wasgood too.

Some of their excellent classical work

Actually a good story on its own.
This is more of an action story than anything.The original books also had action but the characterizations and relationships were a lot more "fleshed out".There are some exceptions, compared to previous human characters, the human "villian" (Gromhul Djun) is fairly well developedamd the interplay between him and Winnowill is quite interesting. Winnowill actually has a grudging respect for his viciousness and ruthlessness as a leader. Despite his human limitations, the Djun, is a match for her and is not fooled by her at all.The story also has a much darker tone, Winnowill seems to take an almost sexual delight in the pain and suffering of others.

The only thing that dissapointed me is the use of artists other than Wendy Pini, this was a dissapointment and might have contributed to the story's weaknesses.

Its not the Elfquest I remember but it moves fast and will keep your interst.

Great book, but get the sequel too!
Since I read this book in it's original form (comic books) I don't know what the black and white version is like, but I loved this story.It's the most intense Elfquest story yet (and there is some gore - probably notsuitable for children)!But if you get this book, you should also readit's sequel to find out what happens.The ending is great!

What a disappointment:(
I can't believe that Wendi and Richard sell their story like it was some cheap....@#$!*&^!!! They receive my ultimate praise for the first four compilations (the original #1-#20)which are the best fantasy epic that Ihave ever read but anything after that I do not bother reading. The qualityof the artwork has gone way down and it is as if some giant tornado hascome along and swept up all the characters I knew and replaced them withthe X-men! Please Richard and Wendi save the characters we all know andlove and bring them back to us!

Through a glass darkly... except sometimes
The present book, "Ascent", covers the first part of the story of the Wolfriders' attempt to win the Palace of the High Ones back from their old enemy Winnowill - and a new one, the dictator GrohmulDjun.

First, it must be said that this is the darkest EQ tale yet.Giventhat the story deals with two would-be Stalins (take a guess, fans), thisis inevitable - but fair warning, the opening scene (the first three pages)is NOT for children!That said, this is a dramatic, well-paced story,much more unified than that in the companion volume "Legacy". Too, the artwork is far more consistent, it having been entrusted to onlyone team of artists.(The use of several teams for "Legacy" isthat book's weakness; art and story are very diffuse in that volume.)

Itis a measure of the quality and "4-D-ness" of the story thatgrim, even frightening events share the stage with moments oflightheartedness, each appropriate to the story.Try, for instance,"Wood" (issue 2 of the series),the sequence depicting theWolfriders and the trolls.

In short, despite the often-depressing storyline (which will become even more so in "Reunion", the upcomingsequel), this book is a story well told with artwork well drawn - and avery affecting ending.

Excellent artwork, compelling story. The saga continues!
I had almost decided not to read any more Elfquests, but these artists draw the characters almost like Wendi Pini does (YAY!) and the story really grabbed me. Yes, it is black and white, but that's why it's so affordable,and it's a lot longer than the color Elfquests that cost twice as much. Thelack of color didn't bother me at all. My biggest complaints: Aroreedoesn't look or act like she did in previous books, the story containsnudity and a lot of people in trashy clothing, and (surprisingly) there'san element of dog abuse in this volume.
