Product Description

About a year ago, film started to circulate on YouTube® of a remarkable man named Kevin Richardson, an animal custodian in a South African animal park.   The film showed Richardson in his day-to-day work, looking some of the world's most dangerous animals directly in the eye, crouching down at their level, playing with them and, sometimes, even kissing them on the nose--all without ever being attacked or injured.  The films’ popularity skyrocketed and Richardson became an international sensation.  In “Part of the Pride”, Kevin Richardson tells the story of his life and work, how he grew from a young boy who cared for so many animals that he was called “The Bird Man of Orange Grove” to an adolescent who ran wild and, finally, to a man who is able to cross the divide between humans and predators.  As a self-taught animal behaviorist, Richardson has broken every safety rule known to humans when working with these wild animals. Flouting common misconceptions that breaking an animal’s spirit with sticks and chains is the best way to subdue them, he uses love, understanding and trust to develop personal bonds with them. His unique method of getting to know their individual personalities, what makes each of them angry, happy, upset, or irritated—just like a mother understands a child—has caused them to accept him like one of their own into their fold.  Like anyone else who truly loves animals, Richardson allows their own stories to share center stage as he tells readers about Napoleon and Tau, the two male lions he calls his “brothers”; the amazing Meg, a lioness Richardson taught to swim; the fierce Tsavo who savagely attacked him; and the heartbreaking little hyena called Homer who didn’t live to see his first birthday.  Richardson also chronicles his work on the forthcoming feature film “The White Lion” and has a lot to say about the state of lion farming and hunting in South Africa today.  In “Part of the Pride”, Richardson, with novelist Tony Park, delves into the mind of the big cats and their world to show readers a different way of understanding the dangerous big cats of Africa.

5-0 out of 5 stars nice
i may buy a lion cubsoon..... its very usefull book,,, i enjoyed reading Tao and Napoleon stories :}

oh i can't forget Ami and Maggie too :}

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing - I've been there!
Just finished the book.I have been 3 times to South Africa and about 5 times to the Lion Park, where Kevin worked.Another destination is the Lion and RHINO park - also awesome. If you are into this, make it a goal in your life to go there....

I also got the Dangerous Companion DVD, which is stunning. I showed it to a lot of friends and family, everyone is stunned.

PLEASE NOTE that the big cats are not doing great. There are only 6000 Cheetahs left in Africa. Some say the lion population (200,000 only 20 years ago) may be as low as 16,000 now. Tigers - are basically gone.Sibirian Tiger is gone, South China Tiger gone. Sumatra tiger almost gone. Bengal tiger MAY have a chance, but very unlikely if those darn Chinese continue to pay $10000 to some poacher for their illegal and disgusting medicine using Tiger bones.

Kevin's mission includes educating people on animals, and to promote their protection. He does a great job, get the book...!

Note that the population in Africa is predicted to almost double from 800m to about 1.5 billion by 2050. The loss of wildlife is a direct consequence of man killing and taking over the natural habitat of the wild animals.People forget that this process has been going on since thousands if not tens of thousands of years. If you read the old testament, there were lions and leopards in Israel at that time. The lions there won't come back, but we can engage ourselves to keep them where they can be found now, at the numbers we have them now.

5-0 out of 5 stars great man
Kevin is one of the greatest man i have ever known. In this book he tells you how to think of nature that all life matters and infacti think the same. I think its a must read fore everyone that cares fore nature and understand how important it is to keep mother earth ok.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite Interesting -
Kevin Richardson has a life doing what he loves - taking care of big carnivores and their small cubs. His early life included lots of taking care of sick or abandoned animals, and two failed attempts to follow his older brother into veterinary school. Fortunately, Kevin ended up meeting a person who had just bought a nearby animal park.

Kevin explains why it is important to know the animals and their different personalities. He learned to related to them as a fellow lion - getting down on all fours, touching them, rubbing heads together, and using a toothbrush to 'lick' their faces after they licked his (painful). The bulk of "Part of the Pride" consists of his experiences providing unarmed (no sticks, guns, whips) enrichment for the lions and hyenas on the property, along with a number of often painful (sometimes to others) lessons learned. His explanations of the lions' actions is straightforward and sensible - per Kevin, they're not that different from humans, with sometimes temper tantrums.

The photos in "Part of the Pride" made up an especially enjoyable part of the book - ranging from showing him resting with, playing with and being 'attacked' by the lions and their cubs, carrying a hyena, and their enormous claws.

Kevin was told many 'rules' about working with lions - most of which he found to be false. His rules, assimilated from ten-some years experience are: 1)Don't wake a lion when it's sleeping. 2)Don't come near a lion when it is eating. 3)Don't surprise a lion - let it know you're coming. 4)Leave when they tell you they've had enough. One he left out - start out while they're young and treat them with respect, almost as peers.

An enjoyable book with and enviable story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing story
I was curious about Kevin Richardson when I first saw some videos of him with his lions on YouTube, so when this book came out, I knew I had to read it. It is a compelling account of a man who has a unique approach to dealing with wild predators - whether they be lions, hyenas, leopards or jackals. But it's his extraordinary relationship with his lions that brings this story to life. A child who was always interested in creatures - creepy-crawly to mammals - Kevin grows up experimenting with different ways to relate to his charges. He moves on instinct alone, and achieves extraordinary results, much to the surprise of other lion wranglers. He has his share of close encounters, but never blames the animal, but rather himself for not reading the lion's mood and behavior correctly. This is a wonderful, readable account of of an exceptional man and his lions and hyenas. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Product Description
A hard-fighting soldier's story-from the trenches of America's first battle in the Cold War.

From the devastating counterattack at Unsan to the thirty-four months he spent in captivity-a period of years in which giving up surely meant dying-Col. Bill Richardson's instinct for leadership and stubborn will to survive saw him through one valley of death after the next. Valleys of Death is a stirring story of survival and determination that offers a fascinating, intimate look at the soldiers who fought America's first battle of the Cold War in the unvarnished words of one of their own. Richardson endured many long months of starvation, torture, sleep deprivation, and Chinese attempts at indoctrination, yet maintained defiance under conditions designed to break the mind, body, and spirit of men. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars very unfortunate
I concur with just about every other reviewer. At a time when there's such a dearth of introductory material on jsr 168, I expected a lot from this book, but unfortunately got very little out of it, and worse yet, I have had to un-learn some of the practices I picked up from this book.

I got really excited looking over the first chapter's example portlet -- a Lucene search portlet. But there are some glaring mistakes in the code. One fundamental mistake I see a lot is their use of request.getParameter("mode") to retrieve the portlet mode, when it's much better to use request.getPortletMode().The mode parameter is not always set and can sometimes be null; it's much safer to use the getPortletMode() method. In general, I would have liked more explanation in chapter one on jsr 168 basics. There simply aren't enough texts out there that do this well.

But I do laud the fundamental premise of the book -- using powerful, mature open-source projects (apache lucene and james) -- to build a portal.Search and mail are the foundation of any commercial portal and I think the open source alternatives compete well here; however, they haven't been tied into a framework that you can deploy out of the box, so I think the authors tried to meet a very real need.

1-0 out of 5 stars Professional Portal Development with Open Source Tools: JavaTM Portlet API, Lucene, James, Slide
Sorry for bad review but book is not for Professional but novice users and managers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just like a Poorly Architeted Portal - A Framework without Much Substance
Enterprise portal based on Portlet is very flexible for rapid development. A good practice is to plug-in quickly a variety of portlets as placeholders to compose a mock-up portal as the baseline for further detailed discussion with stakeholders. Of course, all the parties involved know that the mock-up presented is still a mock-up and they expect there is a production release at the end.

This book is also a mockup, though we readers did not know this until we paid this book as the final deliverable.

This book has two parts. The first part, Open Source Portals, contains 6 chapters. Chapter 1, The Java Portlet API (JSR 168), mainly lists lengthy attribute names and descriptions for CSS Style Definitions and for User Information Attributes, without much explanation. Much better material may be found online just a google away. Many pages are given to the code of a sample portlet. The explanation is as much as the comments made by poor programmer, almost none. Why do we readers have to pay in order to have the pleasure to read poorly commented coding? The sample is built upon Apache Lucene API, though it has not been introduced at this stage at all.

The remaining 5 chapters in the first part introduce several subjects that may be used to support a portal development, researching with Lucene, messaging with Apache James (for mail), object to relational mapping with Apache OJB, content management with Jakarta's Slide, portal security. The authors take these pieces of the components of their portal framework. A problem with this book is that the authors keep introduce a large amount of terminologies and software components without much insight. For instance, they never bother to explain why they use Apache OJB in their portal framework. Isn't Hibernate also a popular O-R mapping tool? I wish the authors explained to us other alternatives and at least some hints of why they choose certain open source tools instead of the others in portal development. This is particular important for using open source tools since there are often many alternatives.

The second part is titled How to Build a Portal. Again, you will discover many placeholders without much substance. For instance, under Design Pattern Consideration in Your Portal, nine standard design patterns are presented, several lines of description for each. The authors just do not bother to explain why they consider these 9 patterns are important for portal development and other are not, or they merely provides a partial list to demonstrate design patterns are still important to portal development as it is for any other development. I will give you another example here. Chapter is devoted to Effective Client-Side Development Using JavaScript. The coverage here is just common for any web development. I do not understand why the authors make this subject an entire chapter, in particular since this book covers a large amount of subjects in a moderate 400 pages, and in particular some fundamental subjects are still missing, such as the coverage of portal servers/containers.

I am not kidding. Open source portal/containers are not covered much in this book for Professional Portal development. Open source portal servers are briefly mentioned in the introductory part in about one page, each in several lines. Apache Jakarta Pluto is covered in a bonus chapter on the book's companion Web site. Apache Jakarta Jetspeed is mentioned in 7 linesJ. Liferay Enterprise Portal is introduced in 15 lines. This books give more coverage on EXo Portal. is introduced in 8 lines and it is introduced briefly again at Chapter 9, when a moderate Portlet is demonstrated.

According to the publisher, "An outstanding team of authors provides a complete tutorial and reference guide to Java Portlet API, Lucene, James, and Slide, taking you step-by-step through constructing and deploying portal applications." The book fails to deliver this promise.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important text for portal development
This book helped me overcome some difficulties I had in my new portal development tasks and in understanding some of the basic concepts needed for developing portlets within/without a portal framework. This book is definitely worth a look for those interested in portal creation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rip off
As others have noted this book is a rip off. Of the 12 Chapters 6 are completly unrelated to Portal deveelopment. Chapter 2 is Searching with Lucene, 3 - Messaging with Apache James, 4 Object to Relational Mapping with Jakarta OJB and 5 is Content Management with Jakarta Slide.

In fairness there are a couple of useful sections - but overall its quite incomplete.

He is also the youngest member of the vocal group, the Backstreet Boys. With the Backstreet Boys, Carter has sold more than 120 million records worldwide. Carter was born in Jamestown, New York, the son of Jane E.(née Spaulding) and Robert Gene Carter. His siblings include B.J. Carter, Angel, Leslie and Aaron. He also has an older half-sister named Ginger from his father's first marriage, a younger half-brother, Kaden, and a younger stepsister, Taelyn, by his new wife. Carter's father, Robert is an American (of English ancestry), and his mother, Jane Spaulding is a Mayflower descendant of English, Welsh, Irish, German, and 1/4 Blackfoot ancestry. Several years later, the family moved to Apollo Beach, Florida and managed a retirement home where they added his younger siblings to their family. Carter began auditioning for acting roles in the early 1990s, and appeared in many commercials. He later made a tiny background appearance in Edward Scissorhands as a kid playing on a slip and slide. It is said that through several auditions, Nick met AJ McLean and Howie Dorough and they became friends. Nick covered a number of songs made popular by other artists in the late 1980s. These songs included "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do", "Uptown Girl" and "Hard to Get". Some of these early recordings were released in 2002 on the CD titled Before the Backstreet Boys 19891993 by Dyenamic Discs, Inc. Later, the three friends formed a mini-vocal group and started seeking a manager. They encountered Lou Pearlman, who thoug...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1358569 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Brave Men of Evenwood
What can I say about this book?having a very personal interest in one particular man who lost his life in France in the First World War Cpl George Parmley, I am one of the daughters of the fourth child that his wife Selina was expecting when he died. The effect of his death robbed a wife of her husband, a child of his father and a granddaughter of her grandfather.
Kevin Richardson's book is not only an account of each of the 70 men's service in the First World War, but also personal details of their family and community life, Kevin's bookalso gives the reader an insight into life in the early 1900's of a community in the North of England.
For me this book made each man a "real person" rather then a book on the First World War. So thank you Kevin for giving us an interesting view into the personal and service lives of the brave men of Evenwood.

3-0 out of 5 stars buy the hardcopy, not the kindle version
Displayed code examples are barely legible in the kindle version of this book. They appear as low resolution images and cannot be enlarged.Other kindle books format programming code fragments as text which is resizable, but not this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well-organized book
These guys put together a wonderful book; I've find it an ideal guide to solving pitfalls in the Java language and related J2EE™ technologies. Having this book on my desktop help me in preventing potential problems with my code and saving countless hours of time tracking down issues that aren't initially apparent.

Java Pitfalls points out a lot of common mistakes made in Java development as well as providing optimization and means of producing much cleaner code that runs faster and uses less memory. This book provides vital information for J2EE Architects and JDK1.4 specifications and lead Developers by showing how to avoid making mistakes that have critical impact on design and implementation of enterprise Java software.
The book covers Java NIO, which is a pretty formidable subject. The author does a decent job with this material. With JAXP, JAXR and JAXP, he provides you with instant access to critical, drill-down information on APIs and the foundation for you to proceed into any region of APIs usage and technology and have secure knowledge of the basics.
Besides being well written, the book is fun. I found myself trying to figure out along with the author how to improve the performance of the various examples demonstrated in the book. In addition to containing excellent advice; it's the most up to date publication dealing specifically with performance of Java applications.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good Java book...
This book is chock full of Java programming and architecture goodies. No Java programmer or architect should be without it. It hits on some of the subtleties of the paradigm and makes some great suggestions for solutions to common problems. I've already used several since I read the book three months ago. It covers the full range of the Java paradigm from EJBs to Servelts and JSPs. It also covers many Java Web service APIs such as JAXP, JAXR and JAXM. Unlike many other books, it also address J2ME, GUI programming and several utilities. Readers should also check out the web site that goes along with the book. It provides sample code, corrections to the text and links to additional resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book
The book is easy to read and well organized with excellent "how-to-fix" information about the "hard-to-figured out" problems. We found many of our Java servlets problems in this book and wished that we had this book earlier when we struggled to solve the instance concurrency problems in our web-based Java/Servlet application. This book is definitely the first book that we will refer too when we have any difficult Java related problems in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good resource, very relevant to problem solving
This book is full of valuable information, and something that I believe I can use for my team of Java developers on our projects. I have enjoyed this entire book, but here are my comments on a few of my favorite "articles" from this book.

#1 - When Runtime.exec() won't. An excellent 13 page discussion of how things can go wrong with the famous Runtime.exec(). There are so many ways to mess up when running OS processes from Java, and this article discusses most of them, and more importantly, the right way to go about using Runtime.exec().

#5 - Avoid Granularity Pitfalls in java.util.logging. This is a well-written discussion of the java.util.logging API, and helps programmers avoid using it in the wrong way. This is a good tutorial, but I really like the pictures that show the relationship between the logger and the handler - it is much easier for people to understand that way.

#15 - Avoiding singleton pitfalls - This is a great discussion of how multiple "singletons" can happen in your VM, if you don't set them up the right way... My company has seen this happen a lot, but I have seen few discussions on it before this book.

#24 - JSP design errors. This is something that I don't believe many other books talk about, and is very valuable. A lot of the JSPs that I have seen out there look bad, and this shows how they should be developed. The examples are good, and this is short and to the point and conveys the points well.

#41 - The problem with multiple concurrent ResultSets. This shows an example of having 2 ResultSet objects open at the same time in an iteration, and showing the results in Sybase, Oracle, MySQL, Access, and SQLServer. It shows how, depending on the implementation of the driver & database, different behavior can be seen, and shows how to fix it. This is an excellent article - most examples I have seen before do not take the time to show behavior from multiple databases.

These are only a few of the articles from this book. I like the book because it is full of self-contained articles that discuss aspects of the Java programming language that are tricky - or are often misunderstood and misused. I also like it because it covers performance, design, and in many cases, gives metrics. Some of the APIs discussed in the book I have not used yet (j2me, jaxrpc, jaxr), but probably will in the future. This is an extremely relevant resources.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I give this an excellent rating, and recommend it highly. ... Read more
