Product Description
Based on the travails of a battered Indian housewife in Britain, the film is a true story of a Punjabi-Briton who was a victim of marital abuse and was sentenced to life imprisonment in the UK after she killed her husband. Unable to bear the brutality and repeated rapes by her alcoholic husband, Kiran Ahluwalia a Punjabi housewife and mother of two in London, sets him on fire and kills him. Charged with first-degree murder, she is sentenced to life imprisonment, where she befriends her cellmate. Moved by her story the cellmate asks her step-brother, a highly respected queen's counsel to file her appeal. Her case comes to the notice of a group of south Asian social workers. They bring her plight to the attention of the media by organizing rallies to gather public support for her freedom. She is ultimately freed by the judicial system. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Service.
The DVD arrived quicker than promised. I had purchased it for a friend and told him that it would be here in about 5 to 7 days and it showed up 3 days latter. He and his wife loved the movie.
Great service, would do business with again.
Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Moving and Very Good
This is a very moving movie starring Aishwarya Rai as a woman who is abused in her marriage. It is a dramatic movie, not the usual Bollywood type movie that contains dancing and music.Aishwayra Rai is magnificent in the lead role, and shows what a versatile actress she is.It is a great movie, and very well done.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must see this movie
Set in Britain in the late 1980s, a young bride from India with the hopes of a bright future, struggles with her duties as a traditional Indian wife while enduring daily abuse, neglect, torment and dishonor from her alcoholic husband. An empowering story of rebirth, as we see the heroine, rise from the 'ashes' of her burning home and to be liberated as a free woman from being a battered woman. The storyline is compelling, as we see flashbacks as the story unfolds. We are drawn in as her friendship evolves with her close friends in prison, while her pleas are being fought for in the courtroom.

This is a refreshing departure from the mellodramatic musical Bollywood movies that causes us to reflect on the lives of women, from all walks of life and cultures, who struggle daily from the torment of abusive spouses.

This is a must see movie.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Woman is the slave of the slaves. Yes she is. Think about it.
This film seemed very promising at the outset. Although I generally am suspicious of productions based on true stories I was aware of this case from the BBC News and decided to give it a try.

The notion of a film based on true life experiences from within the Indian culture is still rather strange given the hostility of the Indian sub-continent communities to Western interpretations of their customs and traditions. However, it is a sign of the vibrancy of Asian cinema which is holding up those traditions to the light of modern and post-modern views of the world.

The beginning of the movie is very promising where we follow the perpetrator of the attack up the stairs and into the bedroom where oil is doused on the sleeping man. As circumstances unfold we are introduced into the world of the wife as a mere chattel of a husband who treats her as he pleases. For all of the pomp and festivities of the Asian wedding what we discover is a medieval division of labour in a household which degenerates into abuse and humiliation with in-laws turning a blind eye because it is the custom to do so.

The recent incidences of honour killings in the UK as well as the barbaric treatment of the woman who was subjected to multiple rape in Pakistan due to some offence committed by her brother suggests that these experiences still occur, but behind closed doors and silent communities throughout the world.

As the film develops with the wife being imprisoned in the alien world of a woman's prisonwhere she meets antagonism and racialism apparently based upon the ignorance of her way of life is in some ways enlightening. Whilst she becomes the focus of attention of a women's support group organised by more modern Asian women, she is befriended by her cell-mate who, unbeknowns to the rest of us, has a brother who is a high powered lawyer.

Ultimately right wins out and a slight crack appears in the cultural barbarity which many Asian women are confronting each and every day. What I found to be a great let down was the sort of happilly ever after type ending which oddly reflects a scene in the Tall Guy where everyone bands together in support including the prison bully. Very Disneyesque in a goody two shoes sort of way. This really was a major letdown for me in a drama which has significant cultura implications.

This film reminded me very much of movies which came from China in the early years once restrictions were eased. Whereas in those films, difficult social and political situations were addressed in a sensitive way which got the point across, Provoked seemed to miss the opportunity.

Well shot, well acted with a reasonable storyline, I would still recommend this movie. Good but not great but one that should be watched by as many men as possible. Some of the attitudes exposed herein can still be found, particularly among industrial workers, in many western countries. There are lessons there for us all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Opera Haters Will Love This Delightful Book
My children, ages 5 and 2, and I, a musician mom, love this book. The pictures are colorful and beautiful. The first page of each story is a picture of all the main opera characters with their names underneath, so the children can refer to this page if the story begins to confuse them. This is followed by a synopsis of the opera, a blurb about the composer and then the opera itself. The text is simply magnificent. The stories are interesting all on their own, and even if you don't like opera you will love this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Child-Friendly" Opera
This book would be a good choice for introducing children to the stories from operas. The author does a nice job of retelling in simple terms, the often-time complicated stories from seven different"child-friendly" operas. Some of the stories will be new tochildren and are sure to hold their interest. A couple of the operas arebased on fairy-tales the children already know and they will be interestedto see the differences in these versions. My only complaint was that I didnot feel that the illustrations lived up to the same high quality as thestories. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read aloud
I have read four of the Horrid Henry stories to my students aged 6-11 and they loved them!Frankly, I was surprised because I thought the older kids would find them too simple for their tastes. Everyone groans in disappointment when we have to stop reading. The youngest do not get some of the more subtle jokes, but they love the stories anyway. With British words such as chips, biscuits, Mum, jumpers and pounds, it has be a linqustic exploration as well. If you have any dramatic flare when you read to kids, you will love this. Not for the anal retentive or faint of heart, only fun lovers.I think we have recognized some our own behaviors in the characters we have met. I found them in England and am glad we can get more titles here. ... Read more

Product Description
Empire of the Sun is a 1987 coming of age war film based on J. G. Ballard's semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. Steven Spielberg directed the film, which stars Christian Bale, John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson and Nigel Havers. Empire of the Sun tells the story of Jamie "Jim" Graham, a young boy who goes from living in a wealthy British family in Shanghai, to becoming a prisoner of war in Lunghua Civilian Assembly Center, a Japanese internment camp, during World War II. Harold Becker and David Lean were originally to direct before Spielberg came on board. Spielberg was attracted to directing Empire of the Sun because of a personal connection to Lean's films and World War II topics. He considers Empire of the Sun to be his most profound work on "the loss of innocence". While Ballard's novel had heroism as a theme, Spielberg once again created a film that dealt with children being separated from their parents. The film was critically acclaimed though it was not a box office success. ... Read more

This is an engaging story, although a bit long.My daughter loved the book and it has a heartwarming and perfect story book ending that every Princess (and Prince) will love. The illustrations are gorgeous!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly lovely book
I love this book it has beautiful illustrations and an engaging story to tell.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly imaginative and uplifting fantasy
The Princess And The White Bear King is an impressive retelling by Tanya Robun Batt of an old fairytale. Enhanced with the superlative artistry of Nicoletta Ceccoli, young readers are provided with the picturebook story of a princess who has a strange encounter with a great white bear, who takes her to live in his castle. Yet when she fails to pay attention to a warning, disaster strikes, and she must set out on a journey east of the sun and west of the moon in hopes of restoring her chance at happiness and love. A truly imaginative and uplifting fantasy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and confusing, not inspiring at all
Since this was the same author, illustrator team that gave us The Faerie's Gift I thought this will be another "must have" book for my library. With great anticipation I read the story and studied the art on the pages. I thought a couple of times that I had missed something as I was reading, yet I decided that if I kept reading, that surely the questions that I had, would clear up. Unfortunately they did not. The story rambles along. It clearly needs some good editing. It's way too long. You don't feel close to the characters. The time lines are too long for a child to comprehend. In the end, it's basically a nothing story, it's not something that I would ever want to read again nor even give as a gift. As a last ditch effort to "fix" the story the author tells the reader that she has woven three tales together and even the explanation gets very long winded. Still at that point re-reading what I already labored through isn't something that interested me again. I was so disappointed. Save your money, seek out The Faerie's Gift instead .... leave this book behind. ... Read more

Horrid Henry is back and he's up to mischief again. This time he's trying to win a year's worth of treats from a local ice cream parlor, getting into trouble on a boring rainy day, giving makeovers, and listening to his favorite author in Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman.

Author Francesca Simon and illustrator Tony Ross have again brought Henry to life with all his impish ways and devilish plots that somehow don't work out the way he planned. Once again, young readers should delight in this chapter book. And I could certainly identify with Henry's desire to listen to his favorite author read from her work. Horrid Henry is lots of fun. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Have You Heard of Horrid Henry?
As authors of books for children, we set out to create books our young readers will enjoy. We hope our books will be "keepers" to be read again and again. Recently I received another email telling me that my action-adventures and mysteries have had this effect on an eleven year-old boy.

In our family, it was the "Mr. Men and Little Miss" books that our children wanted my wife and me to read over and over again, and we did. Even though our children are 30 and 28 now, I highly recommend these books to parents today.

Now I have the opportunity to introduce you to another set of books that I think will be "keepers." I'm talking about the "Horrid Henry" books by Francesca Simon. I would first suggest these as books for boys 5 - 8. Each book contains four short chapters. Girls will enjoy the books just as much as boys.

The series has been successful in England, and is now being published in the US. In addition to "Horrid Henry," the titles include "Horrid Henry Tricks the Tooth Fairy," "Horrid Henry and the Mega-Mean Time Machine," and "Horrid Henry's Stink Bomb."

Parents might be concerned that Henry will give kids ideas of ways to get into trouble, but there are always consequences for the things that Henry does. Other characters, in addition to Horrid Henry, include his brother, Perfect Peter, Moody Margaret, Spotless Sam, Goody-Goody Gordon, Tidy Ted, and Soar Susan.

The Horrid Henry books deal with real life situations. Young readers may recognize their own parents, teachers, siblings, friends...even themselves, in the characters. But it's the humor that will have kids coming back for more.

My first concern, as an author, is for struggling or reluctant readers, since I grew up hating to read. Horrid Henry may be just the cure for children who think they aren't interested in reading.

"Horrid Hentry invents a time machine and promises to send his brother, Perfect Peter, to the future (as soon as Peter puts on one of Mom's dresses). But when Peter gets there, it isn't exactly what he had in mind In fact, everything kind of looks the same ..."

In the continuing tales of Horrid Henry, this second book contains the following stories: "Horrid Henry's Hike," "Horrid Henry and the Mega-mean Time Machine," "Perfect Peter's Revenge," and "Horrid Henry Dines at Restaurant Le Posh."

Following the tale of Horrid Henry's little brother, Peter, I was laughing out loud at both boy's antics in "Perfect Peter's Revenge." Poor Perfect Peter, having to put up with a brother like Horrid Henry. This time he swears Henry will never trick him again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Horrid Henry's Stinkbomb
"Horrid Henry and Moody Margaret are a perfect pair. Henry has a secret club tht doesn't allow girls in. Margaret has a secret club just for girls. And both Henry and Margaret love to play pranks. But with Perfect Peter and Sour Susan acting as spies, which secret club will win?"

Horrid Henry's Stinkbomb has the following stories: "Horrid Henry Reads a Book," "Horrid Henry's Stinkbomb," "Horrid Henry's School Project," and "Horrid Henry's Sleepover."

In my favorite story, "Horrid Henry's Stinkbomb", Henry uses a stinkbomb as a toxic weapon in his war with Moody Margaret. When Perfect Peter is "fired" from Horrid Henry's secret club and Soar Susan is "fired" from Moody Margaret's secret club, the two ban together to seek their revenge. Typical childhood pranks, this story had me laughing out loud. ... Read more
