Editorial Review

Product Description
"Best Practices in Gifted Education" provides concise, up-to-date, research-based advice to educators, administrators, and parents of gifted and talented youth. The 29 practices included in this volume are the result of an extensive examination of educational research on what works with talented youth. The interest in culturally diverse and low-income learners, the means to identify talents, and the need for curriculum that appropriately challenges high-ability youth constitute just a few of the 29 practices. Each practice is organized into a chapter containing two sections: What We Know and What We Can Do. The first section briefly describes the practice and summarizes the research. The second section suggests what course of action a parent, teacher, or administrator might take at home, in the classroom, or at school. The book is a must-have for those who want a guide that makes a connection between research and practical action in gifted education. Educational Resource ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential resource for classroom teachers
I have worked as a teacher in both "gifted" and "regular" classrooms and have also served as district coordinator for gifted programs. Having an empirical base that helps one understand what works for varieties of gifted students and why is invaluable.This book provides a solid foundation based on best-practice research and offers clear, concise suggestions for designing and implementing programs that take into account all aspects of giftedness, including different areas of academic and creative abilities, disabilities, guidance and counseling needs, etc. Dr. Robinson and her colleagues also offer a variety of options that enable parents and schools to collaborate in order to offer the best possible programs with the resources available to them.This manual is a must-have for any educator hoping to offer quality, defensible guidance and instruction to gifted youngsters.

2-0 out of 5 stars Best Practices Not So Much
This book is intended to give the best practices in gifted education.It is very vague about the practices.Much theory but not a lot of actual advice.It may be good for a beginner or parent who wants to know the general options of gifted education. ... Read more

From the supplier: The conservation provisions of the 1985 and 1990 farm bills were flawed, and contained legislative immunities and privileges that resulted in the lax enforcement of the bills. The problems were caused due to inadequate staff, insufficient training programs for the farmers and lack of fixed rules. Swampbuster, an apparently inefficient program, can be very effective in the maintenance of the country's wetland heritage.

Product Description
This is the second book in a topical new series looking specifically at research relevant to the care provided by midwives for childbearing women and their families. This volume brings together many important pieces of research which are not readily available elsewhere. Topics covered include midwives' career intentions, and men in midwifery. These studies illustrate the diversity of the research methods appropriate to midwifery, ranging from randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effects of clinical procedures, to detailed observational studies to describe interactions between midwives and women in their care. Midwives, Research and childbirth is essential reading for all midwives - as students, practitioners, teachers and managers. It should also be of interest to other health professionals involved in the provision of maternity care, and members of social science disciplines concerned with issues of women's health. This book should be of interest to trainee and qualified midwives, health visitors and nurse researchers. ... Read more

From the supplier: The popularity of wetlands reform legislation is the result of widespread misinformation about the nature of wetlands and the political interests that accompany environmental policy recommendations. The eagerness to improve on laws sometimes leads to the indiscriminate elimination of all existing provisions regardless of their merit. The best reform policy would be to enhance the flexibility of laws.

Product Description

When children begin secondary school they already have knowledge and ideas about many aspects of the natural world from their experiences both in primary classes and outside school. These ideas, right or wrong, form the basis of all they subsequently learn. Research has shown that teaching is unlikely to be effective unless it takes into account the position from which the learner starts.

Making Sense of Secondary Science provides a concise and accessible summary of the research that has been done internationally in this area. The research findings are arranged in three main sections:

* life and living processes
* materials and their properties
* physical processes.

Full bibliographies in each section allow interested readers to pursue the themes further.

Much of this material has hitherto been available only in limited circulation specialist journals or in unpublished research. Its publication in this convenient form will be welcomed by all researchers in science education and by practicing science teachers continuing their professional development, who want to deepen their understanding of how their children think and learn.
