Editorial Review

Product Description
This magnificent new edition, which includes relevant shorter texts and key illustrations, is designed specifically to help those who, while already enjoying some acquaintance with Old English, come to Beowulf for the first time. As in their celebrated Guide to Old English, Fifth Edition, the editors rarely claim to originality in their emendations and interpretations. Rather they have tried to select what seemed to them the best scholarly view on each point, and usually this has been the view that enjoys a majority consensus among editors and scholars. They adopt a detached and impersonal presentation, resisting interpretation, except in a short section where they individually explain their own differing views about the poem. Concerned to encourage the reader as much as possible, Mitchell and Robinson keep their notes and emendations to a minimum. While they by no means attempt to conceal the existence of phonological and metrical problems, or of variant readings, they actively discuss such problems or readings only where these may affect the meaning of the poem. Leslie Webster's important contribution to the edition shows too the editors' determination to provide the reader with a contextual account as comprehensive as possible, within the bounds of an affordable edition, as does their discussion of what Klaeber calls the poem's "fabulous" and "historical" elements. Beowulf: An Edition consists of four parts: an introduction; text and notes; an account of how the editors arrived at their text; and a section devoted to giving the background to the poem. The text of the poem provided is that presented in the manuscript, in Wanley's catalogue, in the Thorkelin transcripts, in Kiernan's report on the state of the manuscript, and the compilation of J. R. Hall, with modern punctuation (used minimally) and modern diacritics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly, great but not for the first time reader
Great extensive study of a classic epic.Extensive footnotes on a line by line basis make the translation and interpretation of the text easier and more vivid.
For example line 1 "HWAET!", many scholars see this word as part of the metrical dip of 1. I and give it no more accent than a word like 'Now" at the beginning of a modern narrative 'Now we have heard...'.However Hwaet is found at the beginning of some OE poems and sermons, and if we consider the present instance as extra-metrical, then we could regard it as a call to attention. We could even imagine it being accomponied by a chord on a harp or lyre.

Modern punctuation is used to help those approaching the text for the first time, with the use of modern diacritics.A great scholary repreduction and enhancement of the original manuscript.

Great treatment is given to the background in the appendix with Genealogical tables, Archaeology discussion and best of all some related poems.

Great glossary, with translation and page reference.

Overall this is a definate buy.Beowulf in it original treatment ,however I would of liked to have seen an English translation woven in to the text ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Conversations with Bruce Robinson
Very enjoyable series of conversations with actor turned writer turned director, pretty boy Bruce Robinson.Having directed two of the best English comedies of the 80's (Withnail and I and How To Get Ahead in Advertising - both starring Richard E Grant - for another perspective and a fantastic perspective of an English (from Swaziland actually but...) actor in Hollywood read Richard E Grant's Withnails) I was very eager to read about the making of these films and what has happened to his career since - try sitting through Jennifer 8 without being disappointed. He is a voracious reader and collector and it is great to get a glimpse of his life and work.I only wish his body of creative work was larger - many of his more recent projects have fallen through. For fans of these two great films it is a delight. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE !!
If you are taking the NCAAOM Biomed Exam, you gotta get this book. I just took the exam and passed. Without this book and tcmtests.com couldn't have done it ! TCMTests.com even recommends this book. Don't delay get it now ! I'd say good luck with the test, but luck it's not necessary with these study guides !

5-0 out of 5 stars The Smart Practitioners'Preferred Medical Textbook
BIOMEDICINE is an informative text written in an easy to understand style by an insightful former surgeon. When I want an encapsulation of Western medicine's take regarding a patient's health condition, this is the first book to which I turn. I have on occasion sent a grateful patient home with an excerpt from BIOMEDICINE because it so clearly describes their medical diagnosis in language anyone can comprehend. I've even recommended that my TCM alma mater consider adopting this textbook for their Western Medicine classes. This book has elevated my professional standard by allowing me to collaborate intelligently with MD's.Dr. Robinson knows how "both sides" think - he is uniquely qualified to write about truly integrated medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bigger than the title
I have no medical background or plans for a medical career, but I love
and value this book. I use it as a constant reference and am also reading
it in its entirety, as it is alive, real and straightforward.Dr. Robinson's personal
anecdotes from his vast experience add much to his explanations and make
the complicated world of medicine much easier to understand. He obviously
has taken great care in his presentation and put much thought into writing
this concise and well-organized textbook, one that I also believe can serve
as a lay person's general medical reference. ... Read more

Product Description
When an elephant arrives - unannounced and unexpected - in the village square, no-one knows what it is. But everyone is prepared to make a wild guess. One little boy called Eric eventually ensures that the identity of the elephant is deduced, and the poor thing given a name.Amazon.com Review
British duo Bruce Robinson and Sophie Windham (writer-husband and illustrator-wife, respectively) team up here to poke and prod at an out-of-nowhere elephant, a poor old pachyderm who doesn't even know what he is.

But then again, neither does anyone else in the town: "One day the people awoke to find an Elephant sitting bewildered in the main square, mopping his brow with a red spotted handkerchief and wondering how he got there." But a boy named Eric, "who was seven and three-quarters and known for telling Tall Stories"--does know what this creature is, but no one seems to be listening. Everyone in town ends up guessing at the identity and function of this strange beast--the Train Driver connects him to a train, the Fireman uses him to fight a fire, the Garbage Collector sends him out to vacuum garbage until the Elephant nearly bursts. But in the end Eric prevails, with the help of the scatterbrained Professor. ("'But what does it do?' they asked. 'It does nothing!' cried Eric. 'It simply is an elephant.' 'Yes, of the long-nosed variety,' added the Professor.")

Kids will find Robinson's building, repetitive structure fun to follow, but it's the details from Windham (Unicorns! Unicorns!) that carry the day in this silly story. From the Professor's chalk scribblings to a dozen-odd throwaway animal cameos (like three cute bears climbing over the moon and a fire-watching pelican), every illustration deserves a long linger.
