Excerpt: Withnail and I is a British black comedy film made in 1986 by HandMade Films. Written and directed by Bruce Robinson, it is based on his life in London in the late 1960s. The main plot follows two unemployed young actors, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and I (Paul McGann) who live in a squalid flat in Camden in 1969 while waiting for their careers to take off. Needing a holiday, they obtain the key to the country cottage in Cumbria belonging to Withnails flamboyantly gay uncle Monty and drive there. The holiday is less recuperative than they expected. The role of Withnail was Grant's first in film and launched him into a successful career. The film also featured performances by Richard Griffiths as Withnail's Uncle Monty and Ralph Brown as Danny the drug dealer. The film has tragic and comic elements (particularly farce) and is notable for its period music and many quotable lines. It has been described as "one of Britain's biggest cult films". The film depicts the lives and misadventures of two "resting" (struggling and unemployed) young actors in 1969 London. They are the flamboyant alcoholic Withnail (Grant) and "I" (named "Marwood" in the published screenplay but not in the credits, played by McGann) as his more level-headed, anxiety-prone friend and the movie's narrator. THANK YOU DR. ROBINSON! A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO THE TCM FIELD!
If you are a practicing L.Ac, who has not or does not practice Western Physical Exam on a regular basis, this book was written for YOU! I can not tell you how many Licensed Acupuncturists I have spoken with who feel that their TCM schooling did not sufficiently prepare them to perform a western physical exam, yet at the same time now realize how valuable these skills can be in their practice. So much of Zang-Fu diagnostic theory is based on tongue and pulse assessment, that many TCM'ers (and the programs that train them) fall into the trap of thinking that they will never even need use these skill. However, while studying in Japan, I realized how even some of the top meridian therapy practitioners utilize western physical examination palpation techniques to confirm their diagnosis, enhance therapeutic outcome, & provide a higher level of patient care! I can confirm this through direct experience as well! This book covers how to perform the assessments simply, elegantly, & efficiently. If you find yourself needed to strengthen this aspect of your practice, buy this book and practice these techniques with someone (MD, PA, NP, RN) who knows them well! And if you get the chance, take Dr. Robinson's Physical Examination for the L.Ac CEU class-your patients will love you for it!

Dr. Robinson has done an excellent job on yet another book. We are honored to have him at our Oriental Medical Conference for the second year in a row. I found the book insightful and very refreshing to me as a Western trained person gone Eastern.I found it helpful to reintergrate and put into practice things known but "stored" away.

Good book.
The overall content of the book is pretty good. It contains the most common western physical exams organized by system. All of these exams were briefly shown to me in school so it is nice to have a book to refer back to. My only complaints are that the pages and print is of low quality and the cover is absolutely horrible. I am very gentle with my books and after reading this book for an hour on a flat table, the front cover began to bend outward and will not lay flat again. Now after multiple uses, both front and back covers are bent outward and will not lay flat. Would have been nice to use better material for the cover or even a hardcover. Overall it is a good book with clear exam descriptions. I haven't checked out the CD yet but it seems like it will be useful. ... Read more
