Excerpt: Lieutenant-Colonel Claude Cunningham Bruce Marshall, known as Bruce Marshall (24 June 1899 18 June 1987) was a prolific Scots writer who wrote fiction and non-fiction books on a wide range of topics and genres. His first book, A Thief in the Night came out in 1918, possibly self-published. His last, An Account of Capers was published posthumously in 1988, a span of 70 years. Marshall was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of Claude Niven Marshall and Annie Margaret (Bruce) Marshall. He was educated at St. Andrews. He became a Roman Catholic in 1917 and remained active and interested in the faith for the rest of his life. He was a member and at times served as an officer in the Una Voce and the Latin Mass Society organizations. During World War I he initially served as a private in the Highland Light Infantry. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the Royal Irish Fusiliers in 1918. Six days before the 1918 Armistice he was seriously wounded. Excerpt: Jonah Tali Lomu, MNZM (born 12 May 1975) is a New Zealand rugby union player. He had sixty-three caps as an All Black after debuting in 1994. He is generally regarded as the first true global superstar of rugby union. One of the sport's most intimidating players on the field, he has had a huge impact on the game. He was inducted to the International Rugby Hall of Fame on 9 October 2007. Lomu burst onto the international rugby scene during the 1994 Hong Kong Sevens tournament and was widely acknowledged to be the top player at the 1995 World Cup in South Africa even though New Zealand lost the championship game to the host Springboks. At one time Lomu was considered 'rugby union's biggest drawcard', swelling attendances at any match where he appeared. He has played for several provincial teams, in the Super Rugby and NPC competitions. These included the Auckland Blues, Waikato Chiefs and Wellington Hurricanes, and Counties Manukau, Wellington Lions and later North Harbour. He made a comeback after undergoing a kidney transplant in 2004. In 1996 he married South African Tanya Rutter; they officially divorced in 2000. He married Fiona Taylor in 2003 and divorced her in 2008. He is officially the Rugby World Cup all-time top try scorer with 15 tries. He...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=264230 ... Read more

Excerpt: Bruce David Grobbelaar (born 6 October 1957 in Durban, South Africa) is a former Rhodesian/Zimbabwean-South African-British football goalkeeper. He played for a number of clubs, most notably Liverpool F.C. during their dominant period in the 1980s. In his teenage years, Grobbelaar was a talented cricketer and was offered a baseball scholarship in the United States, but a career in football was his main ambition. His footballing career started with a Bulawayo-based team, Highlanders FC, in Rhodesia's second biggest city. In his late teens he was signed up by Durban City Football Club in South Africa, but left claiming to have been sidelined owing to his colour in this predominantly black team. Immediately after leaving Cosmos, he signed up for National Service, spending two years on active service in the Rhodesian National Guard during the Rhodesian Bush War. In 1979 Grobbelaar was signed up by the Vancouver Whitecaps of the NASL after he had attended their scouting camp in South Africa. At the Vancouver Whitecaps, Grobbelaar played under the management of former England and Blackpool goalkeeper, Tony Waiters, making his debut against the Seattle Sounders in 1980. Though second choice to former Wolves keeper Phil Parkes, he became a cult figure at the Whitecaps. During 1980, he visited England to see family friends, and a chance phone call from Ron Atkinson, brought him an impromptu trial with West Bromwich Albion. Atkinson was keen to sign Grobbelaar but owing to difficulties over gaining a work permit, the deal fell through and he returned to Vancouver. He subsequently returned to the UK on loan to Crewe Alexandra. In an early appearance in English football...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=663785 ... Read more

Excerpt: The UNLV Rebels football program is a college football team that represents the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (commonly known as "UNLV"). The team is currently a member of the Mountain West Conference, which is a Division I Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). The program which began in 1968, is coached by former Eddie Robinson Award finalist Bobby Hauck. The team's home games are played at Sam Boyd Stadium in Whitney, Nevada. The Rebels are not very popular with Las Vegas locals, and have only sold out games on four occasions in their history, all four being against Wisconsin, beating them once out of the four meetings in 1987. In 1967, Nevada Southern University announced that it would be fielding a collegiate football program in its department of athletics, starting in 1968 and announced that the team would be a Division II Independent and that Bill Ireland as the programs first head coach . The Rebels played their first game of their inaugural season on September 14, 1968 against the St. Mary's Gaels at Cashman Field in Las Vegas. The Rebels won the game, defeating the Gaels 2720 in front of 8,000 fans. The Rebels would remain undefeated until the last game of the season, losing to Cal Lutheran Kingsmen, 1713, as the Rebels finished their inaugural campaign 8-1. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: John "Jack" Chalmers GC (11 March 1894 29 March 1982) was a New Zealand born Australian recipient of the Albert Medal, formerly the highest decoration for gallantry awarded to civilians or to military personnel for actions "not in the face of the enemy" in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. A member of the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club, Chalmers was awarded the Albert Medal in 1922 for his actions in rescuing a swimmer during a shark attack at Coogee Beach. With the establishment of the George Cross, the Albert Medal was discontinued and, in 1971, living recipients of the decoration were invited to exchange their medal for the George Cross; Chalmers took up the offer and formally became a recipient of the George Cross. Chalmers was born at Wellington, New Zealand, on 11 March 1894 to Scotsman John Chalmers, and his English wife Louise (née Seager). In 1906, Chalmers and his family moved to Sydney, Australia, before re-locating to Queensland two years later. During this time, Chalmers gained employment as an engine driver. On 5 October 1915, Chalmers enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force for service during the First World War. Allotted to the 7th Reinforcements of the 25th Battalion as a private, he embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAT Itonus on 30 December. Arriving in Egypt, Chalmers was re-allocated to the newly formed 47th Battalion on 9 March 1916, following an expansion of the Australian forces. Following a period of training, Chalmers was shipped from Alexandria along with the rest of his battalion in June, bound for the Western Front. Disembarking at Marseilles on 9 June 1916, the 47th Battalion moved into the trenches the fo...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=21435680 ... Read more

Addressing the issue of how men in demanding jobs can ensure they are good fathers to their children, this guide presents numerous ways to improve both the quality and amount of time that fathers spend with their children. Interviewed are more than 75 men from different backgrounds and professions, from pig farmers and plumbers to doctors and politicians. These men speak about the ways they balance demanding jobs with being good dads and offer suggestions for making work help, rather than hinder, fathering. 5-0 out of 5 stars Some great fathering perspectives and advice...
This is an outstanding book, and has definitely broadened my fathering awareness and outlook. I was so impressed with the book that I purchased a 2nd copy for a busy work colleague who I felt might get as much out of the book as I did.

It's a great read, with lots of humour, touching stories, practical advice, and admissions of mistakes from a wide variety of Australian dads (John Howard, Mick Malthouse, busy professionals, plumbers, you name it...) and their families.

In terms of long term impact, in the top 10 books I have read. ... Read more
