2-0 out of 5 stars Not full disclosure
I was very disappointed to open my package from Amazon and discover that the hardcover book for which I had just paid $25 was missing its dust jacket. Unless I am mistaken that was not disclosed in the listing, and I feel that it should have been.

5-0 out of 5 stars Androids Are People, Too
Based on the teleplay by STAR TREK's Gene Roddenberry and Gene L. Coon, D.C. Fontana's novella THE QUESTOR TAPES retains all of the charm and thought-provoking elements of the made-for-TV science-fiction movie that originally aired in 1974. Fontana was a veteran writer and staff member of TV's original STAR TREK and was intimately acquainted with Roddenberry's world view, and she was therefore uniquely qualified to pen this novelized version of a film that Roddenberry hoped (in vain, alas) would serve as the pilot for another SF TV series.

THE QUESTOR TAPES tells the story of an android and a brilliant young engineer who are on a desperate quest to locate the android's long-missing inventor. An allegory of humankind's own age-old desire to discover its origins and understand its place in the universe, the story has all the earmarks of STAR TREK creator Roddenberry's belief in humanity's intrinsic potential for good and his support of the concept of better living via technology--the same upbeat ideas that permeate the various TREK incarnations.

So THE QUESTOR TAPES isn't necessarily ground-breaking SF, and its themes will be quite familiar to STAR TREK fans, but it is nonetheless an entertaining and sometimes thought-provoking read.In spite of the novella's short length, author Fontana fully develops the primary characters and advances the relatively simple plot in interesting and compelling ways. Readers familiar with the TV flick on which it is based will not be disappointed--Fontana succeeds in retaining all of the film's major elements and charm. But familiarity with the film is not a necessity, as THE QUESTOR TAPES is a completely self-contained novella that should satisfy even the most ardent SF fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pure classic
One of the best Sci-Fi stories ever written back in the '70's.I remember reading it when I was younger, and vaugly remember the show.I read it again a few years back, but had the book stolen.Found it again, and had to buy it.Now they just need to re-release the show. You want a good story about struggle to find yourself in a sci-fi setting about an andriod? This is it.Right up there with I Am Robot(the book by Azimov). Its a short book but well worth adding to your collection. ... Chapters: The Questor Tapes, Genesis Ii, Pretty Maids All in a Row, Spectre. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Questor Tapes is a 1974 television movie about an android (portrayed by Robert Foxworth) with incomplete memory tapes who is searching for his creator and his purpose. Conceived by and executive produced by Gene Roddenberry, the script is credited to Roddenberry and fellow Star Trek alumnus Gene L. Coon. A novelization, written by D. C. Fontana (another Star Trek alumna), was dedicated to Coon, who died before the program was broadcast. Project Questor is the brainchild of the genius Dr. Emil Vaslovik, a Nobel laureate: He had developed plans to build a super-human android. A team of the world's foremost experts is able to build the android, even though they do not understand the components with which they are working they are only able to follow the instructions, and install the parts, left by Vaslovik, who himself has disappeared. Attempts to decode the programming tape were not only unsuccessful, but also erased approximately half of the tape. They decide to substitute their own programming, over the objections of Jerome "Jerry" Robinson (Mike Farrell), the only team member who had actually worked with the mysterious creator. He is overruled by the head of the project, Geoffrey Darrow (John Vernon). When the android's body has been finished, the new tape is loaded, with no apparent results. In desperation, Robinson persuades Darrow to allow Vaslovik's tape what remains of it to be loaded. Again, the team is disappointed, as there appears to be no response. However, once left alone, the android comes to life. It adds the various cosmetic touches to a previously featureless outer skin, giving itself a male sexual...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2421352 ... Read more
