When there's no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the earth.

Four mismatched survivors take refuge from a zombie plague inside a shopping mall, and absolute terror ensues.

The second film in George A. Romero’s classic zombie trilogy now takes on new life in a faithful graphic novel adaptation by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) and new art star Chee (Wake The Dead). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not much to say.
There's not much to say about this comic. It's pretty much exactly like the first couple of scenes from the movie. The artwork is not that amazing and there is not as much action like in the film. Also, unlike in the film the message behind the story is not as compelling which is weird considering the comic follows the story of the movie exactly. There's not much of anything new in this comic that one has not already seen if they have seen the 1978 film. I would say buy the comic if you like anything zombies, but if you want something compelling it's probably better to pass on the Dawn of the Dead comic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only one tinney-winney problem...
I LOVED Dawn of the Dead. When I first saw at the age of 12 it changed my life.10 years later I'm still obsessed. So of course I loved the comic.I won't go into the the 2004 remake, let's be honest: it was a remake in name only (whoever let the same guy who wrote the "Scooby Doo" movie scripts write that one should be shot).Anyway the comic was terrific except for the single fact that the characters were too attractive.Let me explain:
In the original Romero films one thing that always stood out for me was the fact that these were ordinary people. They weren't your typical Hollywood phonies victimized by the rampant ageism and physical appearence standards of American pop culture.Let's be honest: Fran was not terribly attractive, she was plain.Nor were the other three anything special: Peter, Roger, and Steven. To quote Peter: "They're us, that's all..."That's what makes the films so terrific.
So I wouldn't have made Fran look like April O'Neil from TMNT.That's all I wanted to say.If you disagree I understand.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much room in Hell
If you're a Dawn fanatic, don't get too excited about this panel-by-panel re-drawing of Romero's classic.

On the one hand, you would think that the pink-blooded, sometimes comic-bookish tone and characters of the film would translate well to a comic book.On the other hand, a panel-by-panel presentation of the film we know and love is not only unnecessary, but it's not even well done.

The artwork is lame, the color is blah, the inking is serviceable, the whole thing is rather pointless. There's gore, sure, but it's almost too much, too late.Nothing is done with the themes of the film, nothing is done to increase appreciation of a horror classic.

If you want anything 'literary' with regards to Dawn, track down the novelization that Romero co-write when the film appeared.Heck, even track down the academic study of Romero's work. The latest Dawn Ultimate DVD box set (highly recommended) contains the first issue of this 3 book series.Don't even bother to 'collect them all'!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR ANY HORROR FAN
Steve Niles's book "Dawn Of The Dead" is a graphic must-read for any horror fan. I have read this book and I found It to be an addicting and well written piece of literature. I would reccomend this book to any fan of the horror genre.

1-0 out of 5 stars Blood Thinner
When there's no more room in Hell, Steve Niles will walk the Earth---doing a panel-for-panel redraw of George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead." If you're reading this, chances are you have an insatiable appetite for the Dead, and the very prospect of the prolific, imaginative Niles (who turned out the thin but entertaining "30 Days of Night") paired up with Romero's classic flesh-eaters makes you hungry. Hungry, if not for brains, then at least for a rousingly good graphic novel with ample amounts of blood, gore, brains, fear, loathing, and of course zombies.

If that's what you're looking for, then you've come to the wrong place.

I had just gleefully plucked up a copy of Anchor Bay's lavish "Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition" DVD set, and so my guard was down as I wandered into that wretched hive of scum and villainy, my local comics shop. That's exactly how guys get it in zombie flicks---they go into the dark warehouse without the shotgun, without a flashlight, totally unprepared. In seconds I was overpowered by the blood-red cover of "Dawn of the Dead", captivated by the slack, staring eyes of a zombie, its hungry eyes devouring me from the cover, staring out of a crowd of the undead, their hands pressed up to tear my face off and devour me alive.

In other words, I was dead meat.

By the time I was infected---meaning, by the time I had bought the thing and taken it home with me---it was all over. Far from being thrilled, nervous, or satisfied, I felt bored, disappointed, and cheated. Worst of all, as I turned my blank-eyed, slack-jawed face up to the sky, I had nobody waiting with a shotgun to put me out of my misery.

What do you get? 1) A panel-by-panel reshoot of "Dawn" comprising three "issues"---literally a redraw of the movie, from the frenzy at the newsroom, to the grisly raid on the Project, to the flight to the mall, and back onto the whirly-bird. If you've seen "Dawn'", then you know what you're getting---and you're getting no more than that. 2) A quick intro blurb by George Romero---he's getting royalties so you'd think he would give us something juicy, but it's barely a paragraph with a note of thanks to the design team---don't blink or you'll miss it. 3) A few pages of stills from the movie. Wow.

Now, if you're like me, even the idea of a strict reshoot of "Dawn of the Dead" in graphic novel form---with Niles at the helm---sounds intriguing. But sadly, Niles is so slavish in following the original film that there's absolutely nothing of interest here, no risks taken, no funky little sideroads explored. It was so dull that I dozed off about midway through, and finished the thing the next morning.

The artwork is slightly amusing, though---artist Chee missed his calling doing airplane safety-pamphlets. The artwork here looks like it has uniformly been culled from the illustrations you can find in any 747 magazine holder, which to me (sicko that I am) is blackly funny. Imagine seeing those funny , unreal cartoon passengers sliding off a yellow airplane escape slide, being chased by the hungry living dead (drawn in the same style), and you pretty much have the artwork of "Dawn of the Dead."

Chee shoves the pedal down hard when it comes to the gore, but frankly---it's just too over the top and cartoonish to have much of an effect, and it's certainly not worth the price of admission. When Chee's red stuff starts flowing and viscera starts flying, it's not Gray's Anatomy---it's more like your mom's week-old lasagna. If that does it for you, dig in.

The three issues bound here are also extremely bare-bones, so even some of the signature scenes from the movie---the zombie Hari-Krishna, for instance, who just makes a cameo appearance here---are cut from the comic. The only thing you get here that you won't get from Romero's classic is a single panel of an undead Elvis impersonator---great for a giggle, but not worth the cover price.

There are fresher corpses in the graveyard, folks. Pass. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars unbelievably bad
There's no other way to put it -- this performance of NOTLD is terrible. As a fan of the original film, I was intrigued by the concept of the film as a radio play. But the performances are just horrible; I mean, actually painful to listen to -- full of the worst cliches and ridiculously shameful racial stereotypes. You think I'm making that up?I'm not.

If you want to listen to a good horror dramatization in time for Halloween, try the 3-D audio performance of Stephen King's The Mist, or the BBC Radio performance of Pet Semetary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta love it!
This CD was incredible. I am usaully not that fond of full cast audio books because the background noise and the movements of all the characters can get very loud and distracting. To make up for this producers sometimes make the overall volume louder, and together it all reduces the quality. No such problem with this! Very clear, very well acted piece. I was completely impressed with this production of a classic.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it should be
This audio recording isn't good at all. It's abridged, which is a problem all in itself for any audio recording. The acting is awful and exaggerated for some reason, the dialogue and attitudes a bit hostile in places that don't make sense. But all in all this recording sounds like it was made back during the days when radio dramas ruled. Which is one of the reasons I've kept this CD. I love the movie, the original and the remake, and I wanted to be just as taken in by this CD. My first impulse after the first listen was to get rid of it, but I kept it, and I listened to it again. So it's not THAT bad, but it's not that good. I didn't pay much for this CD (thankfully) but I'm not sorry anymore that I got it. It's good to listen to while at work (with headphones, of course) and for getting that Night of the Living Dead mood to watch the movie later in the evening. It's not bad to have around when you have nothing else to listen to, but don't get this CD expecting the entire script or award winning acting. Buy it as cheap as you can or have someone burn a copy.

2-0 out of 5 stars I Was So Disappointed.
I adore aural entertainment!I've well lost track of how many hundreds of dollars I've spent on audiobooks and OTR cds and mp3 cds (and cassettes back in the 80s and 90s as well).

But the production quality of this adaptation is really unprofessional.I suspect it must, surely, have been a student project that Simon & Shuster were duped into publishing. The writing is fine, but the acting is weak (though, granted, many would say that of the original cult classic film, lol), but most off-putting of all is the producer's amateurish use of FX.Most annoyingly, whenever characters are meant to be outdoors they sound as though they are in a cave -- which makes the first 15 minutes of the production very confusing.

It's a brilliant idea: Night of the Living Dead would make a spectacular audio drama! But this is not it.I can't, in good conscience, even recommend it to the die-hard complete-ist fanbase, or for its schlock appeal.Had I heard it before I had purchased it, I wouldn't have purchased it.

And I really, really wanted to love it, too.I am quite obsessive about audio dramas, about horror, about the zombie sub-genre and about George Romero's work. But I still couldn't bring myself to listen to this thing again. ... Read more
