Product Description
Jodhaa Akbar is a sixteenth century love story about a marriage of alliance that gave birth to true love between a great Mughal emperor, Akbar, and a Rajput princess, Jodhaa.Political success knew no bounds for Emperor Akbar (Hrithik Roshan). After having secured the Hindu Kush, he furthered his realm by conquest until his empire extended from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal, and from the Himalayas to the Godavari River. Through a shrewd blend of diplomacy, intimidation and brute force , Akbar won the allegiance of the Rajputs. This allegiance was not universal. Maharana Pratap and many other rajputs always considered Akbar as a foreign invader. Maharana Pratap also banned inter marriages between rajputs who had given their daughters to the mughals and the ones who did not. But little did Akbar know that when he married Jodhaa (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), a fiery Rajput princess, in order to further strengthen his relations with the Rajputs, he would in turn be embarking upon a new journey - the journey of true love. The daughter of King Bharmal of Amer, Jodhaa resented being reduced to a mere political pawn in this marriage of alliance, and Akbar's biggest challenge now did not merely lie in winning battles, but in winning the love of Jodhaa - a love hidden deep below resentment and extreme prejudice. Jodhaa-Akbar is their untold love story.[4] ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good movie bad DVD
The DVD has a couple places where it basically just stops playing. We've tried this on several DVD players, so it's definitely the DVD itself!
It was disappointing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truly An Amazing Movie...
I decided to watch this movie because it was a highly rated Netflix instant watch that I thought may be worth a watch. It is 3.36 hours long, so you may have to take it in bites. It is primarily a "based-on-truth" historical romance and best watched irrelevant to historical accuracy. The director did say it was 70 percent fictionalized, but surrounds accurate historical events.

It is a love story between an allianced couple in the mid-1500's, he is Mogul (Muslim) and she is Hindu and his goal is to bring the lands together by the behest of her father. There are some excellent underlying themes that strongly appealed to me. Akbar's attempt to create peace through mercy (which reminded me a little of Ghandi), his determination that a land that welcomes all faiths will be respected and strong, and the honest purity and the patience he shows in his blossoming love for Jodhaa. In the end, it is very very romantic with much historical involvement and geography. It is spoken in Arabic and subtitled.

That being said, the cinematography ranges in everything from excellent to fair throughout. Some scenes are exquisite, yet some appear to take away from the movie as a whole. I think that there is something in this for men, if there is a date night. It's the length of the movie that would be daunting, but there is intrigue, deception, battles, and hand-to-hand combat that appealed to my husband. I varied in my reaction to the movie throughout, yet most of the things that did not appeal are probably of cultural difference.

I am very new to Bollywood movies and did not care for "Bride and Prejudice", and the honesty is that I thought I would be turning this movie off early......yet I was drawn in and found myself delightfully immersed and will wonder if anyone else will dream of yellow flower petals, the scent of cumin, and the music of India as I did. : )

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie, visually stunning
This movie is absolutely grandiose; the opening battle scene will show you that Indian movies are really entering into another realm. The songs are beautiful, catchy, and the dances original.
We get to see lots of actors, unlike in many western movies: soldiers, officers, dancers, they really put in the resources needed to make you grasp how big the Mughal empire was.
I watched it with my daughter, and she was so happy to see elephants, a beautiful love story between a prince and a princess! Really a good family movie that you will remember.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful
I loved this movie. Plain and simple. I watched the 2 DVD's in one sitting (3 hours, the third DVD is Bonus features). I actually didn't mean to at that time, I just wanted to have a peek ... and got hooked!!! There is an opulence in colors and production that just blew me away! It is truly an epic movie with historical relevancy for India and a heartwarming love story at the same time. A lovestory that can teach us even today how to be compassionate and understanding about different cultures and religions!

And even the subtitles were pretty accurate (you know, usually one has to be very tolerant when it comes to translations from Hindi to English in Bollywood movies). This one was quite alright and also the picture quality was exceptionally good. I can only recommand this impressive product as all around great!!! Go ahead and buy it, you won't be disappointed, I promise.Jodhaa Akbar (3 Disc Collector's Edition)

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie!
I loved this movie. I would have given it a 5 star but for the DVD that was not in anamorphic format. But the movie is still 5*.

Aishvaria Rai and Hrithic Roshan were transformed into these two real historic characters . They look different.

The rich scenery and color is just awesome. There is even this sufi spiritualsong, Khwaja Mere Khwaja - by A R Rahmanthat I love. You can put it in a loop and listen to it forever.

The story is for the most part a romantic story between a Mughal Prince/King Akbar and aHindu Rajput princess who had marry him for political reasons. She is a very independent and religious (Hindu) Woman and stands her ground on her faith. He although in position of power respects her and amused at first and then slowly falls in love with her.

Its a nice romantic journey. There were other royal intrigue and fights etc..But they were all background forthese two protagonists relationship.

I wish this would come out on Blue ray High Def disk. It's worth watching it on a HDTV projection/Large screen theater.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Movie
Hilarious. Amitabh Bachchan is the man and Manmohan Desai is a great comedy director, extremely influential.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly absurd film marred by awful subtitles
This story of a family separated by chance and reunited by fate is widely and rightly considered a Bollywood classic. The film (three hours long -- short by Bollywood standards) is a wonderful exercise in absurdity, an amalgam of countless genres which manages to make some obvious but worthy observations about family and religion in its spare time. It's a Unitarian-Kung Fu-romcom-gangster-musical-revenge flick, directed by Manmohan Desai with visual flair and a winking understanding of the tropes he exploits. The acting is superb and ridiculous, and the titular brothers are given ample opportunity to shine. Amitabh Bachchan's Anthony (a charismatic and empathic Kung Fu Catholic) and Pran's grave Kishanlal are especially memorable. The villains are over the top, the song and dance numbers extravagant, the fight sequences utterly ludicrous. Can't recommend it enough. The movie's primary flaws lie in its length and the relative weakness of its female characters.

Unfortunately, the DVD release of the film is deeply problematic. The subtitles are truly dismal, failing to translate ALL of the songs and huge chunks of dialogue. English misspellings abound. The translation smacks of laziness, and one can only hope for a more definitive release at some point. Four or five star film, but it's difficult to recommend the DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Three brothers, three religions, three lots of fun
A wonderfully cheesy Hindi film from the late 1970s when flares were in vogue and disco ruled the world. Even now some 30 years on, this film still holds its own and is as charming now as it was then but with the added bonus of subtitles to help those people along whose Hindi is somewhat scratchy or in my case totally none existent.

This is a typical Hindi film with a zillion songs, lots of fancy dance routines along with the usual flimsy plot following the fate of three young brothers who find themselves being raised as a Hindu, Muslim and Christian respectively when they are separated from each other after their father goes on the run from the police and their mother disappears.

"Amar, Akbar, Anthony" is a film with no genre whatsoever; it is a drama, comedy, adventure, musical and love story all rolled into one, with the actors and actresses singing and dancing their way through a series of impossible events that culminate in everyone getting their girl, and the mother and father being reunited after 20 years apart.

This is escapism in its literal sense but it is great fun to watch and you will soon find yourself booing the baddies and cheering on the goodies. Oh yes this film has goodies and baddies, kidnapped girls (who happen to be very beautiful) and heroic rescues from burning buildings, the odd miracle or two, along with a forced marriage, one funeral, an act of vengeance and a delightful scene of riding off into the sunset that will have you laughing and cheering from beginning to end.

With an excellent cast of characters playing the lead roles, all you can do is sit back, pop open a bag of pakoras and munch your way through Hindi movie heaven. ... Read more
