4-0 out of 5 stars Tanuki's Gift
Tanuki's Gift, by Tim Myers, is about friendship. There was a priest. He lived alone in a hut. Every summer people would re-build the priest's hut. People would also give the priest food. Winter came. A Tanuki was waiting by the door in the cold bitter air. Tanuki told the priest "I have no family."

Then the priest let Tanuki into the priest's hut. Every winter day Tanuki would bring gifts for the priest. Tanuki really wants to bring a gift the priest has only dreamed of all his life. Priest wants three gold coins before he dies so he can donate it to the temple. The priest's eyes were filled with tears because the Tanuki didn't show up. For the rest of the year the priest would worry about the Tanuki.

The next year the Tanuki showed up with the priest's desire-three gold coins. The priest's heart was pumping so hard that it was filled with joy. The priest felt really, really foolish for sending the Tanuki on such a long journey. Tanuki thinks that he hurt the priest's feelings. Priest only wanted the friendship to last.

Now that he has the three gold coins the priest has to make a donation to the temple

This book teaches that friendship is more important than getting money and other stuff. The Priest was worried about the Tanuki because Tanuki didn't show up all year. After Tanuki back from such along journey Tanuki brought the Priest got his dream gift. This shows that the Priest cares for the Tanuki. The lesson I learned this book was that it's wrong to send somebody to go get something for them on such a long journey.Friendship is more important than getting stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars the gift
Tanuki's Gift by Tim Myers is a great book. It explores the value of friendship. It is a wonderful Japanese fable. The vibrant and expressive illustrations are terrific multimedia collages. The fable is very well written and will be a great addition to any children's book collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars a simply beautiful book
This book is responsible for one of the most satisfying experiences I've ever had as a bookseller. A woman had come into our store to try and find a children's book that she was buying as a gift. It was for a couple about to celebrate their 60th anniversary. She wanted a book that would reflect their lasting and infinite affection for one another. After giving her a few different books to look at, I remembered this one and showed her a copy. As she sat there in the middle of our children's store reading Tanuki's Gift, she started crying. It had really touched her deeply and reminded her of the love her two friends felt for each other. She was really happy with the book, thanked me for the perfect suggestion and left our store with a smile. I've read many, many stories that deal with ideas of devotion and friendship, but this is the only one that makes me choke up a little every time I read it aloud.

5-0 out of 5 stars A DEFINITE must read.
I don't think I've ever written a review for anything ever, but I couldn't help but to say that I've never read a more heartwarming story. My six year old daughter and I just found this book to be so full of what true love and understanding really is.A DEFINITE must read.

Product Description
We have updated this title and replaced it with Professional VB.NET, 2nd Edition ISBN1861007167, which will be available from April 2002. The 2nd edition is fully compatible with final release (version 1.0) of the .NET Framework.

Visual Basic.NET is the next version of Visual Basic and a major part of Microsoft's .NET initiative. Responding to pressure from the VB community, VB.NET is a significant upgrade that is far more flexible and powerful than previous versions. Microsoft has introduced a number of new features, not least a move to full object-oriented programming and greatly enhanced web design facilities.

This comprehensive book takes an in-depth look at the new and enhanced features of VB.NET and provides the professional programmer with the knowledge needed to build real-world applications and fully utilize the power of VB.NET.

This book covers:

- An introduction to the .NET Framework and Common Language Runtime (CLR)

- Deriving classes from base classes using inheritance

- Handling errors with the Try...Catch structure

- Developing multi-threaded applications

- COM and .NET component interoperability

- Accessing data with ADO.NET and XML

- Building web applications with Web Forms

- Creating custom controls for Windows Forms and Web Forms

- Creating and consuming Web ServicesAmazon.com Review
Aimed at the reader with some previous programming experience who wants to know VB.NET in detail, Professional VB.NET digs in deeply to the latest version of the popular tool, with plenty of coverage of advanced topics. With in-depth advice for using VB.NET as a true object-oriented language, plus coverage of the inner workings of the .NET Framework itself, this book delivers a thorough and wide-ranging tutorial.

The team authorship of this title shows up in a variety of writing styles. Some early sections contain more theoretical material with a tutorial for designing classes with VB.NET, including its full support for inheritance and "classic" object-oriented design concepts like polymorphism. As this text moves forward, it gets more momentum with somewhat less prose and more examples. Standout sections include some fine material on using Windows Forms, plus excellent coverage of properties and visual design options. Coverage of custom controls is very good here and might well justify the price of this book for experts who need to design their own controls. Much of the book zeroes in on standalone application mode, though three solid chapters on Web Forms, custom Web controls, and Web services will get you started with ASP.NET on the Internet. Short code excerpts, rather than whole programs, are the rule here.

With coverage of .NET assemblies and deployment, threading and COM interoperability, experts will find what they need to get legacy COM and ActiveX components to work with .NET, as well as to start deploying .NET applications in the field. This is a title that can be skimmed in stretches to find topics that really solve day-to-day problems, particularly with the thornier areas of object-oriented design in VB (on which it is excellent though somewhat diffuse), plus advanced object-deployment, security, and other low-level details of the new .NET platform. Clearly, the new version of Visual Basic means big changes for all VB developers, but Professional VB.NET can help experienced VB users negotiate this leap successfully and help them get the most out of this new language and platform. --Richard Dragan ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Overly Complex
I am an experienced VB6 programmer so I thought I could skip the "Beginning" edition from Wrox.I went onto this "Professional" edition.Boy was that a mistake. While I could follow the concepts in the book, they were presented in a very overly-complex manner. It seemed the authors (and there were a lot of authors) tried to present the most complex scenario they could think of for each topic. But then did not give any "real-world" cases where you would ever use all of the complexity and nuances discussed. They could have made the code examples much more direct and to the point without trying to confuse the reader.I think I could have gotten a basic skillset from the Beginning book and picked up anything else I needed through development. Also this book is absolutely filled with errors.Even the index is complete garbage, you have to download a corrected one from Wrox.com.I don't want to carry a bunch of loose pages around with the book as a side-bar.

4-0 out of 5 stars On a par with C++, Java and C#
This book is the sequel to "Beginning VB.NET 2003". That book of necessity had to devote time to going over basic syntactical material of VB.NET. By contrast, this book is squarely aimed at object oriented material.

It shows how to design a problem so as to have natural object classes. From these, the book moves into implementing these under VB. This of course leads immediately into topics like inheritance and interfaces. And how to make a hierarchy of classes. You get to imagine levels of abstraction, like virtual methods in a class, which act as placeholders for actual methods in derived classes. There is a good discussion of the various ways that polymorphism can arise.

Other chapters go into the GUI aspects of the language. Secondary emphasis really. These chapters are straightforward. Nothing conceptually hard here.

What is striking about the book is that in the OO chapters, if you remove the code examples, much of the text could apply to C++, Java and C#. What Microsoft has done is promote VB to the level of these languages.

3-0 out of 5 stars sigh - but what about the INDEX
First, this review DOES refer to the current edition:
Professional VB.NET 2003, 3rd Edition

I have purchased many, many books published by WROX. I have found them to, for the most part, to be GREAT books with a range of information. The books are in series, so you can choose either Beginner or Professional versions.

BUT the one thing I can't understand is their total disinterest in creating a decent index. This book has the worst INDEX of all. Not only is the index very skimpy (as most of the WROX books are,) but THIS book's index is FULL of mistakes. It seems virtually every listing sends the user to the WRONG page. I just don't understand what the problem with Wrox is. This index issue of skimpiness/mistakes is found throughout their catalog of books.

NOTE: As far as content, I would have given this book FIVE stars, but someone from WROX should start addressing the INDEX issues.

If you wish to see well done indices just look at books from Microsoft Press.

Again, please understand, the content of this book is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book so far for VB.NET
I'd say this is the best Professional VB.NET book so far. I like the the ADO.NET part and VB control part of this book. Better than O'really ASP and VB book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should have been VB.Net Programming with the Public Beta 2..
This book is not based on Visual Studio.Net Final Release!

I have read the book front to back including introduction page.I just realized that the book was based on beta 2 of Visual Studio.Net, too late for a refund.Anyway, I went on to read it and found out that the book was not very much organised as tons of '...we'll discuss this on chapter xx ... ' appear no less than 5 times in a single chapter (on some chapters). Mispelled words also are catching enough to say that this book was in a hurry to be printed.

If you're looking for a book that covers thorough details on window forms and web form control howtos, this wouldn't give you enough detail on those topics.Web Services is equally a mere introduction, with about two pages of discussion on UDDI as well as WSDL. Not much on ADO.Net and XML.

I should have borrowed this book instead and skim through it or should have bought it for 20 bucks less. Besides, it's already outdated.I hope the same authors would come up with a second edition that has richer detail...and send me a free copy. ... Read more

Product Description
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover is both adored and detested for its combination of sumptuous beauty and revolting decadence. Few directors polarise audiences in the same way as Peter Greenaway, a filmmaker as influenced by Jacobean revenge tragedy and 17th-century painting as by the French New Wave. A vile, gluttonous thief (Michael Gambon) spews hate and abuse at a restaurant run by a stoic French cook (Richard Bohringer), but under the thief's nose his wife (the ever-sensuous Helen Mirren) conducts an affair with a bookish lover (Alan Howard). Clothing (by avant-garde designer Jean-Paul Gaultier) changes colour as the characters move from room to room. Nudity, torture, rotting meat, and Tim Roth at his sleaziest all contribute the atmosphere of decay and excess. Not for everyone, but for some, essential. ... Read more

Product Description
What is this book about?

.NET is designed to provide a new environment within which you can develop almost any application to run on Windows (and possibly in the future on other platforms). Visual Basic .NET (VB.NET) is likely to be a very popular development tool for use with this framework. VB.NET is a .NET compliant language and, as such, has (except for legacy reasons) almost identical technical functionality as the new C# language and Managed Extensions for C++. Using VB.NET, you can develop a dynamic Web page, a component of a distributed application, a database access component, or a classic Windows desktop application.

In order to incorporate Visual Basic into the .NET Framework, a number of new features have been added to it. In fact, the changes are so extensive that VB.NET should be viewed as a new language rather than simply as Visual Basic 7. However, these changes were necessary to give developers the features that they have been asking for: true object orientated programming, easier deployment, better interoperability, and a cohesive environment in which to develop applications.

What does this book cover?

In this book, we cover VB.NET virtually from start to finish: We begin by looking at the .NET Framework, and end by looking at best practices for deploying .NET applications. In between, we look at everything from database access to integration with other technologies such as XML, along with investigating the new features in detail. You will see that VB.NET has emerged as a powerful yet easy to use language that will allow you to target the Internet just as easily as the desktop.

This book explains the underlying philosophy and design of the .NET Framework and Common Language Runtime (CLR) and explains the differences between Visual Basic 6 and Visual Basic .NET.

You will learn how to

  • Develop applications and components using Visual Studio .NET
  • Effectively apply inheritance and interfaces when designing objects and components
  • Organize your code using namespaces
  • Handle errors using the Try...Catch...Finally structure
  • Access data using ADO.NET and bind controls to the underlying data sources
  • Create Windows applications and custom Windows controls
  • Interoperate with COM and ActiveX components
  • Create transactional and queuing components
  • Use .NET Remoting to send serialized objects between clients and servers
  • Create Windows Services
  • Use VB.NET to access information on the Web
  • Create and consume Web Services
  • Secure your applications and code using the tools provided in the .NET Framework SDK
  • Arrange your applications and libraries in assemblies and deploy them using Visual Studio .NET

Who is this book for?

This book is aimed at experienced Visual Basic developers who want to make the transition to VB.NET.

What do you need to use this book?

Although it is possible to create VB.NET applications using the command lines tools contained in the .NET Framework SDK, you will need Visual Studio .NET (Professional or higher), which includes the .NET Framework SDK, to use this book to the full.

Here are some additional notes on what you may need:

  • Some chapters make use of SQL Server 2000. However, you can also run the example code using MSDE (Microsoft Data Engine), which ships with Visual Studio .NET.
  • Several chapters make use of Internet Information Services (IIS). IIS ships with Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Professional, and Windows XP, although it is not installed by default.

1-0 out of 5 stars Neither a good learning tool nor a good reference.
This book has disappointed me one too many times so I'm going to finally write the review I've been wanting to.I keep trying to use this book and it keeps leaving me short.Sometimes in the examples the author tells you to do something obscure but then he doesn't tell you how to do it.The coverage lacks depth and detail.

I am an experienced VB programmer but I got this book to help me convert to .Net.It has been a big disappointment. Some of the topics I needed help with were not covered. Most of the ones that were covered were sketchy.

Fortunately, I picked up a Special Edition of "Using Visual Basic .Net" from Que which typically saves my bacon.

5-0 out of 5 stars What you need to develop a professional application
I`m really happy that I've purchased this book.
Actualy I`m a self-learned VB 6 programmer; after having finished about how to program VB.NET, I wanted to learn more about the infrastructure of the .Net framework & also how to use professional tricks to increase the performance of my applincations.
I found this book helpful on the way to achieve the above goals.
You can consider it as a MUST HAVE BOOK for a professional VB developer.

5-0 out of 5 stars nice and clear to the point.
This is not a book for beginners who are new to VB world. This book explains the differences (improvements) from VB6.0 to VB.NET.In addition, it has a few chapters that explain the Object Oriented concept in a well-organized fashion. This book is a good investment for anyone who is looking to move into the VB.NET world.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Unprofessional VB.NET
Good book if you want to find how to apply VB.NET in different areas. BUT if you want to know VB.NET itself, don't waste your time, it should be the last book in your list.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Professional VB.Net
The .Net platform has undoubtedly revolutionized the world of software development, whether web based or traditional windows. Professional VB.Net like other WROX books (pardon my bias) does complete justice to the subject matter, explaining every nuance and subtlety with the typical lucidness that WROX books have been come to be known for. I used this book to pass the 70-305 certification exam. Great book for learning the language and the .Net platform. ... Read more

Product Description
*What should students be able to do and how should they be able to think as a result of study in a discipline?
*What does learning in the disciplines look like at different developmental levels?
*How does one go about designing such learning and assessment in the disciplines?
*What institutional structures and processes can assist faculty to engage and teach their disciplines as frameworks for student learning?

Creating ways to make a discipline come alive for those who are not experts–even for students who may not take more than one or two courses in the disciplines they study–requires rigorous thought about what really matters in a field and how to engage students in the practice of it.

Faculty from Alverno College representing a range of liberal arts disciplines–chemistry, economics, history, literature, mathematics and philosophy–here reflect on what it has meant for them to approach their disciplines as frameworks for student learning. They present the intellectual biographies of their explorations, the insights they have gained and examples of the practices they have adopted.

The authors all demonstrate how the ways of thinking they have identified as significant for their students in their respective disciplines have affected the way they design learning experiences and assessments. They show how they have shaped their teaching around the ways of thinking they want their students to develop within and across their disciplines; and what that means in terms of designing assessments that require students to demonstrate their thinking and understanding through application and use.

This book will appeal to faculty interested in going beyond mere techniques to a more substantive analysis of how their view of their respective disciplines might change when seen through the lens of student learning. It will also serve the needs of graduate students; trainers of Tas; and anyone engaged in faculty development or interested in the scholarship of teaching. ... Read more
