5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
This book was very helpful and instrumental in my completing reviews for a staff of 20 that I supervise. The book arrived shortly after ordering and I was able to use lines and paragraphs from the book.I was able to change words in sentences that were in the book.Overall the book was very helpful to finish reviews in a short time that I had procrastinated in completing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good start
This book provides a pretty good start to most performance reviews. There are two types of appraisal assistance texts out there, the that has complete appraisal examples and the type that has useful appraisal phrases. This book contains entire appraisal paragraphs. If you have never written an appraisal before, this book is a good place to start. If you have some experience, you may be better served by a phrase book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful rundown on handling poor performance
Too many managers let poorly performing employees slip through regular reviews until a crisis occurs. If an employee's written appraisals do not reflect his or her actual work, a sudden termination can result in costly legal action because the company's paper trail will support the employee, not the firm. This useful handbook provides sound advice on how to handle such issues and deals with the nine most common areas of poor job performance. Corey Sandler and Janice Keefe show you how to document the evaluation and feedback escalation process, from verbal counseling through remedial training, warnings and termination. They provide sample documents and language you can use as models in building a solid paper trail to support your actions and help make your case if a disgruntled employee decides to take legal action against you and your company. Although the short chapters could be more discursive, getAbstract praises both the extensive documentation and the accompanying case studies.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book but needs to be more searchable
Great phrase book to assist with wording on performance appraisals. Thought the Chapters were sort of weirdly organized though, and I felt like I was flipping back and forth alot. An index would have saved me lots of reading. But overall, I liked the way each skill set was identified, with key nouns and verbs to use in describing performance of the skill, along with phrases that exemplify Meet/Exceed performance, Needs Improvement, and Unacceptable.

EXAMPLE: Skill Set = Time Management and Prioritization (pg 140)
Key Verbs -displays, manages, prioritizes, etc
Key Nouns - assignments, deadlines, priorities, resources, etc

Meets/Exceeds Feedback: Can accurately access the time required for a particular task
Needs Improvement: Has difficulty handling more than one task at a time
Unsatisfactory: Consistently fails to meet deadlines

Here is what I mean about it being weirdly organized.Say I was looking for that one phrase that talks about ability to multitask. My chapter choices are: Qualitative Attributes, Quantitative Attributes, Management Skills, Personality and Human Relations, Professional Skills. In this case, I would have to know that I'm looking for Quantitative Attributes. Ok, then within that chapter, I would need to look through the sub-categories: accomplishment of tasks and goals, accuracy and precision, computer skills, knowledge of job and industry, planning and scheduling skills, setting goals and objectives, time management and prioritization....etc.Finally, I would need to know to look under "Time Management and Prioritization" to find phrases about multi-tasking. So, basically, the information is there... it's just not intuitive.

Overall a really helpful reference, but could use some help with organization

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for writing appraisals on employees
I think it is a very good tool for employers to write appraisals on their employees.I used it in a different manner, for writing my own appraisal.

2-0 out of 5 stars Do be stumbled in doing performance reviews
The performance appraisal phrase book is a great book to assist with performing appraisals. You no longer have to be stumped for words or phrases while appraising your employees. This book offers many great template for every situation you will encounter, thus saving you time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Reference for Employers and Managers
This little book (thick, but about the size of a Kelly Blue Book) can easily fit in your desk drawer or in your pocket (the trim size might be intentional). I guess the author intended for managers to keep this book handy whenever they needed it to compose their performance reviews. The book succeeds as a reference. You will never need another book if you are looking for the "right phrase" in order to praise or reprimand someone. It's ALL there.

I wish the book had a little more guidance on the actual appraisal process. The author could have removed some of the duplicate phrasing to make room for more commentary. Like for example, in the chapter "Strategies for dealing with unsatisfactory performance" there is only about 5 pages of actual guidance on how to deal with the actual performance of the employee, and I thought a few more pages of guidance would have made this book a more valuable reference for managers. Although I understand that the book is designed to be a book of phrases rather than instructional, simply providing a list of words is not that useful. That being said, the information that the author DOES offer is all very good, and spot-on.

Other than that, the book is a good resource and worth the price, in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars thumbs up
This book was and is very helpful documentig and delivering a successful review. I felt it was also helpful in reviewingwhat level of performance my fellow employees are delivering. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Where are the useful sources??
"Mr. Cheap" doesn't seem to know anything about most of the wonderful bargain sources that exist in the DC/NoVA area.In this area, we have LOTS of places where people can get end-of-season clothes, returned and unused items of all types, leftovers from building jobs, furnishings from places that have closed (not the scam ones listed in this book, some of which I checked out only to find ancient junk and NOT the superbuys he claimed), cooking supplies, hardware, jewelry supplies, hard-to-find clothing sizes, and many more. Also, his restaurant listings are a joke.Readers would be better off with the archived reviews from the Washington Post. And the paeans to Tuesday Morning and similar chain stores?? What a joke!Who needs what are basically Sunday paper ads?Books like this should have NEW information about one-of-a-kind places, not chains.Whoever put this second edition together copied the good info from the first book but forgot to research almost anything new.Maybe a third edition, with input from REAL investigation will be upcoming.I'll be waiting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not up to expectations.
I thought the author would actually REVIEW the outlet malls, not just tell us where they are (you can get that for free on the Internet!) He warns that not all "outlets" really offer great bargains -- but you have to check 'em all out yourself to find out which ones do.

And guess what -- he says you can get great prices at Sams, KB Toys, and Tuesday Morning. Well, "duh". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference for the Beginer and information for the advance
Active Investing is not a book about day trading. It is a book about how to be involved with your investments. It provides good information on how to find stock information. For example, it explains whats available on Yahoo and how to use the Yahoo web pages. It provides data on free and subscription information. It tells you what and how often to refer toinformation. It also provides information on how to understand stock information. For example it explains moving averages, trading ranges etc..
It approaches the information in a logical manner. It starts with describing sources, then it explains the different markets (Nasdeq, NYSE), it explains how and what information you should have when making a decision on about a stock. (financial data, market data). It then progresses to how you buy and sell stocks, mutual funds and variations of buying and selling (puts and calls).
My opinion is that it is a good book for all people who want to understand the language and rules of the road in buying stocks etc.It does not have any magic formula. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 1001 Business Letters
Provides the use with interesting letter samples for everyday problems. I would recommend this book to others

1-0 out of 5 stars Letters: 1001. Pages: 422. Stars in my review: 1.
Brief letters, poor examples, lack of formatting - and it goes downhill from here.

I bought this book hoping to see examples of 1-page letters that cover a myriad of subjects - a reference guide of style and substance, if you will. What I received was a book that covers nearly every topic briefly (from HR memos to Accounts Receivable letters to Travel complaints or compliments), at the expense of covering them well. In my opinion, a book that contains 1001 example letters should be no less than 1001 pages.

I have included a few specific criticisms that I hope will be of value to potential buyers:
    1. I have seen up to 4 "letters" on one page of print in this book. This does not allow the reader to get the visual impact of a well-written letter that has been formatted for the reader.
    2. Only the body of a letter is included. No examples of salutation, mailing notations, or closing etiquette are to be found in this book. Furthermore, there are no examples of letter styling (full-block, block, or semiblock).
    3. Ignoring for a moment the lack of style, I am still less than pleased with the content. Many of the example letters intended for customers and employees lack substance. Specifically, a letter requesting a credit reference asks a question of the reader, but does not include the manner by which a reader should respond - or when.

Of the hundreds of books I have purchased from Amazon, this is the first that I will return. The book is simply that bad. A lack of substance AND style in a reference book is inexcusable, in my opinion. If you are still considering purchase of this book, sight-unseen, please go to your local bookseller and review before purchasing.

On a brighter note, there is another book that I certainly recommend: "Strategic Business Letters and E-mail" by Sheryl Lindsell-Roberts Houghton Mifflin Strategic Business Letters and E-mail, Paperback, 374 pages (0618448330). This book is not a collections of letters, but it is ripe with great advice and example after example of how to become a better writer, no matter what the subject. Formatting, white-space, planning, considering the reader and the likely response - these are all critical points that have dramatically improved the way I now look at written communication. You will be a better writer for following the advice between the covers of her book.

My sincerest hopes that this review has given you some guidance in your decision to either purchase or continue your search. Best of luck! ... Read more
