Excerpt: Howard William Morenz (June 21, 1902 March 8, 1937) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played centre for three National Hockey League (NHL) teams: the Montreal Canadiens (in two stints), the Chicago Black Hawks, and the New York Rangers. Before joining the NHL, Morenz excelled in the junior Ontario Hockey Association, where his team played for the Memorial Cup, the championship for junior ice hockey in Canada. In the NHL, he was one of the most dominant players in the league and set several league scoring records. A strong skater, Morenz was referred to as the "Stratford Streak" and "Mitchell Meteor" in reference to his speed on the ice. Considered one of the first stars of the NHL, Morenz played 14 seasons in the league. He was a member of a Stanley Cupwinning team three times, all with the Canadiens. During his NHL career he placed in the top 10 leading scorers ten times. For seven straight seasons, Morenz led the Canadiens in both goals scored and points. Three times in his career he was named the most valuable player of the league, and he led the league once in goals scored and twice in points scored. He was named to the NHL All-Star Team three times. Morenz died from complications of a broken leg, an injury he suffered in a game. After his death, the Canadiens retired his jersey number, the first time the team had done so for any player. When the Hockey Hall of Fame opened in 1945, Morenz was one of the original 12 inductees. In 1950, the Canadian Press named him the best ice hockey player of the first half of the 20th century. Born in Mitchell, Ontario to William Morenz, Howie Morenz had three sisters and a brother. Morenz learned his hockey by pla...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=630471 ... Read more

Chapters: Melissa Auf Der Maur, Little X, Charles Doudiet, Groff Family, Walter Bowman, August Schellenberg, Vic Rauter, Paul Ragusa. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 34. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Melissa Auf der Maur (pronounced ; born March 17, 1972) is a Canadian rock musician from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Her career has included 5 years as bassist with the band Hole and she later toured with The Smashing Pumpkins for their 2000 tour. Her second solo album, Out of Our Minds, was released on March 30, 2010. She is also a published photographer. Auf der Maur was born to journalist and politician Nick Auf der Maur and literary translator Linda Gaboriau. Because Nick Auf der Maur was Canadian and Linda Gaboriau was born in the U.S., Melissa holds dual Canadian-U.S. citizenship. Contrary to recent comments claiming Auf der Maur's surname refers to a Swiss river, it translates to 'On the Wall'. This is because 'Maur' was derived from the German/Swiss word for 'wall', 'Mauer', and it is not a direct translation. Melissa is adamant about 'On the Wall', as her grandmother, Theresia Schaelin-Auf der Maur, was "always pounding my heritage down my throat", and was very proud of the name, which is on the brink of extinction. Her native language is English, though she also speaks French. She spent some of her early childhood in Kenya with her mother, but after several bouts with malaria returned to Montreal, where she attended F.A.C.E. School, a performing arts high school, and then Concordia University as a photography major. Auf der Maur became friends with Billy Corgan after apologizing for a friend who had thrown a beer bottle at the band during one of The Smashing Pumpkins' first Canadian concert dates at Montreal nightclub Foufounes Électriques (which translates to "Electric But...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=142687 ...
