5-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Love CD
I've already listened to this CD twice all the way through. It's an important topic and Dr, Laura in her neat, precise, way, continues to make it clear how much power we have over our life and emotions.

I would recommend this CD to anyone who is working on improving their life and themselves. ... Read more

Product Description

A new picture book from Dr. Laura Schlessinger, radio personality and bestselling author of the #1 Publishers Weekly bestseller Why Do You Love Me?

Sammy and Mother have gone shopping to buy a birthday pres- ent for Sammy's cousin, but Sammy wants every stuffed animal in the store for himself. He's convinced that having all of them will make him very happy, until Mother helps Sammy discover what's really important in life.

In her follow-up to Why Do You Love Me?, Dr. Laura shows one family's creative solution to a universal childhood dilemma. Like Why Do You Love Me?, But I Waaannt It! is intended for parents and children to read together, to open the door to discussions about why we want things and what brings true happiness. But I Waaannt It!by Dr. Laura Schlessinger Illustrated by Daniel McFeeleyAmazon.com Review
In her latest children's book, popular radio talk-show hostDr. Laura Schlessinger turns her attention to the dreadedchild-in-a-toy-store phenomenon. The temptations for young Sammy(protagonist of Dr. Laura's earlier bestselling title, Why Do You Love Me?)prove to be too much when he accompanies his mother to the toy storeto select a gift for his two-year-old cousin. "But I waaannt it!" Sammy whines, clinging to an armful of stuffed animals. "Having themall will make me so verrry happy." In a strategic (andwallet-emptying) maneuver, Sammy's mother buys him everything hewants, trusting that, once home with the overwhelmingly excessivemenagerie, he will somehow learn a lesson. And in this story, thelesson he learns is that things do not have the power to makepeople happy. As his mother says, "It's how special somethingor someone is to you that makes you happy." This picture book is nomore pleasant to read than it is to see a child whining in a store, but if its lesson sinks in, parents everywhere will breathe a sigh ofrelief. 1-0 out of 5 stars Where do I begin....uugh!
I basically agree with all the other reviews about how wretched this book is. I was appalled by the preachiness and the corny, patronizing way in which it was delivered. I was dumb struck when part way through the book the mother actually indulges the tantrums of her gluttonous child by buying him the toys he wants, using a twisted sort of reverse psychology, to teach her son about greed. He later comes to his mother and tells her that the stuffed animals on his bed are making him uncomfortable, and that he really is not that happy to have them after all, saying "lets give them all to needy children who don't have any" As if we're all supposed to give a collective "oh, how sweet." First of all little children do not think like this. When you give into the demands of a child, they do not examine their own thought about the subject and psychoanalyze. They have a Pavlovian response, and use the same tactics again and again as a means to an end.
The illustrations were bizarre to say the least. First of all the adults are illustrated with a touch of realism, but the child is drawn as a caricature, with big googly eyes and big ugly red curls. The book leaves the reader wondering if "Dr." Laura has had any actual contact with a child let alone have any of her own.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Son LOVES this book!!!!
We have a three year old son and this is one of his FAVORITE books! He asks us to read it to him all the time.He knows the phrase "But I want it!!" very well.We can also use the lesson in this book, when he wants ALL the toys, too.Love the book.A++++++We have been very pleased with ALL of Dr. Laura's childrens books. Our son really enjoys us reading them to him.He asks questions about the illustrations. It's great.

3-0 out of 5 stars Review for "But I Waaant it!"
I don't know if my child brought this book home from school, or it is one that got pulled out from a bunch of children's books we have that were given to us by a friend, whose own children had out grown them but, that's neither here nor there. What caught my attention was that it was written by Dr. Laura Schlessinger and I recall listening to and truly enjoying her radio shows when I lived in a different area. As far as the book itself? I think there are some good parts in it for explaining to children certain things and some not. I enjoyed the part where the mother told the child and I quote... "It's not how many things you have that make you happy-its how special something or someone is to you that makes you happy. I take issue, as some of the others have, with the buying the child that was throwing a tantrum the toys to begin with. Are children also going to expect the parents to just buy them what they want so they can learn this touching lesson? I've never written a childrens book, so I don't know if perhaps there is something I am not quite getting when it comes to educating morally at that level, but I think buying a child the toys because the child said it would make him happy sends the wrong message. I'm not rating it lower than a three because there are some valuable insights shared as mentioned above as well...

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed.
This audio book was just what I needed to help release myself from the past.Thank you, Dr. Schlessinger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Self Help Book
This is definitely the best self help book ever written! I've read many, many self help books. All of which were helpful, but this is the one that really hits you hard. Dr. Laura is known for her brass, blunt approach, but she wants you to get it. She provides plenty of examples. This is not a book for wimps. It's a book for people who are motivated to change and just need a little push in the right direction. Now go do the right thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Laura's hope for the a good life after a bad childhood.
The worst pain that disrupts our daily lives, destroys our relationships with loved ones, and keeps us victims is usually buried in a bad childhood. Disappointed, Traumatized, or Tortured when we were too little to fight, by parents or others who were not able to provide the kind of love needed for growth; can leave us with scars that last a lifetime.

In her 4 CD set, Dr. Laura insightfully outlines problems that a Nightmare childhood can leave us with. A former victim of a painful childhood, she is both understanding and empathetic as she explains the ways we can reframe and go on to a good life.

I especially enjoyed her ability to understand the ways that childhood pain that make a happy life difficult, without accepting those difficulties as an excuse for self defeating behavior. She also presents examples of people who consulted her as a therapist or on her broadcast that exemplify the ways that winning one's life back from an unhappy past can be heroic.

I have my edition of the CD's and I keep a set in circulation among my patients.

Dr. Laura is no longer the victim of an unhappy childhood; she is the victor of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book on a difficult and complex subject
Dr. Laura gives insight and direction on how to move forward rather than stay stuck in the memories and pain of a bad childhood. This book has helped me beyond expression. I especially appreciate her candor at the end of the book, telling about her childhood which wasn't a bed of roses. I listened to this CD twice to carefully take it all in and will probably listen to it again a few months from now. As she indicates, getting over a bad childhood is always a work in progress.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to sit through.
While I like Dr. Laura & think a lot like her I'm afraid she missed the mark with this CD/Book. I've enjoyed most of her other books but didn't find this one particularly helpful or interesting. The CD version of the book basically spends hours telling you to get over your bad childhood & move on. It's rarely that easy. The only part of the book I found intersting was Dr. Laura's synopsis of her bad childhood. I think she should write an autobiography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Laura's God's Top Ten
Dr. Laura does an incredible job of explaining the ten commandments and the consequences in a way that kids can relate to today. For example, my favorite scene is when one of the animals finds out his mom and dad are going to get a divorce. The way that it is handled exactly answered the kind of feelings that my daughter had years ago when we went thru it.It is very beautifully done.
This is actually the second time I have purchased this - I bought the VHS years ago for my kids and now my grandkids have watched it so much it was just worn out!!I was soooo happy to find that it was available on DVD.The grandkids were so happy to be able to watch it without the squigglies again!

5-0 out of 5 stars The animals come to life
Excellent video, and it has Dr Laura, which is great, the 10 segments are so fun to watch you'll want to watch it over and over again, and is a great 10 commandments teaching tool for kids, can't recommend it enough!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Children LOVE this video
I have listened to Dr. Laura's radio show and read her books for several years, and this video is another winner! It uses cute puppet characters to present real world situations and examples of following (or breaking) the ten commandments;it is not too preachy, but presents it to kids in language they can understand. My kids love the songs, and I have to admit they are pretty catchy tunes.Parents can enjoyably watch this with their children, but children can also understand and enjoy it on their own.My kids are now 10 and 8, we've had this video a couple years, and they still watch it.Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT video for little kids!
My 6 y.o. Eva loved it as did Tsion and Meklete. They ran around screaming GOD'S TOP 10! all day - but the DR Laura butterfly is kinda weird - but the puppets are funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Commanding!
As a divorced father with every-other-weekend custody, I was grateful to Dr. Laura for this DVD until my eldest said I only followed two of the commandments. Pointing out there was no commandment against selling kids into slavery shut her up pretty fast!

Product Description

They number in the millions and they are incredibly important to families and to our society, yet they are underappreciated, little respected, and even controversial.

Who are they?

They are the stay-at-home moms.

These are women who know in their hearts that staying home to raise their children is the right choice for the whole family. Some do it from the outset of their marriages, while others make the difficult transition from career-driven women to homemakers. Either way, it is a choice that is incredibly rich and rewarding, not to mention challenging.

Now Dr. Laura, building on principles developed during her long career as a licensed marriage and family therapist, provides a wealth of advice and support, as well as compassion and inspiration, to women as they navigate the wonders and struggles of being stay-at-home moms.

Learn how:

  • to hold your head high and deal with naysayers;
  • to see the benefits of being home not only for your children but also for your marriage;
  • to understand the changes you see in yourself;
  • to realize that the sacrifices you endure now will make for lasting bonds and a stronger family, in addition to a more cohesive community.

In Praise of Stay-at-Home Moms is a special book, a profound and unique understanding of how important it is for mothers to raise their own children.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I love listening to this book as I go on walks in the evening. It really helps me put things in perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to this if you are a stay-at-home mom!
Dr. Laura uses her straight-forward way of speaking to encourage moms who stay at home. The cd version features Dr. Laura reading the book herself so you can appreciate the nuances and inflections of the words she wrote. As a (mostly) stay-at-home-mom I found this encouraging. I also found myself inspired to make sure I was really focusing on enjoying this time instead of always focusing on my to-do list. I do work from home and at times I become so focused on what needs to be done next that I forget to enjoy the moments throughout the day. Dr. Laura's words have inspired me to stop being so obsessed with accomplishing things and to have fun with this short season in life. I feel like I have a greater sense of purpose than I did before listening to this book.

For women who don't stay at home, you may not like the tone of the book. Dr. Laura takes a very strong line on what is best for the family and it does go against what many people consider to be "normal". For women who have already chosen to stay at home this book will support and encourage you in what can be a very difficult job at times. I am grateful that I was able to come across this CD set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining
As an at-home mother, it is always good to hear praise.I will admit her views are a bit anti-feminism; and I'm sure that may rub some the wrong way.I, however, follow the traditional views that a mother is best for her children--not a daycare provider.I have never listened to her show, so I'm not sure how this compares.

It was nice to listen to in the car, and I found it very calming after a long day of caring for kids and husband.Almost theraputic to hear that my struggles are not in vain! ... Read more

Product Description

Sammy has a big favor to ask God, but he isn't sure how to find Him. Is God up in the sky with the stars? Can we spot Him with binoculars? Do we need to pinpoint God's exact location before we can talk to Him? Where is God? Everybody Sammy asks seems to have a different answer, until Grandpa explains simply but eloquently how we can all talk to God anytime, anywhere.

As she has done in her previous children's books featuring the irrepressible Sammy, Why Do You Love Me? But I Waaannt It!, and Growing Up Is Hard, acclaimed author and radio personality Dr. Laura Schlessinger zeros in on an issue of real concern to parents and children alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Book
At a time when God has been kicked out of our schools, offices, and even many of our religious institutions, it's a refreshing change to find a children's book that invites Him back in.  Dr. Laura's book teaches our precious children the power and beauty of prayer.  Her unique writing style and adorable illustrations make this book a special treat for bedtime; and the story is the perfect way to get your kids excited about a relationship with their creator.  I think this book is a must-have for every child's personal library.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book to read to children
This book is terrific in helping me talk to my children about God.I was actually quite amazed at all the different issues that arose from the "plot."It really opened my eyes to the different concerns my children might have about God.Also, I'm frankly annoyed by the person who gave this book only two stars and gave stupid criticisms - like the first one: Dr Laura's name is on the cover. What is that?I'm tired of those people with knee-jerk hate of religious principles.Loved the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Well, where did you see Him last?
[THIS IS A REPLACEMENT REVIEW FOR AN INCOMPLETE REVIEW THAT I ACCIDENTLY SENT EARLIER TODAY.]

Here's a bad sign:Laura Schlessinger PhD ("Dr. Laura") gives herself top billing in "Dr. Laura Schlessinger's Where's God?" her children's book about prayer. God doesn't appear in this book as a character. He's the topic of discussion between a pop-eyed, misshapen creature named Sammy and Sammy's grandpa, who resembles a normal human being. (I can't say that I find Daniel McFeeley's illustrations charming: Sammy is too grotesque.)

Sammy wants to ask God "to go to the hospital and help Mommy's knee get better so she doesn't need surgery and can come home right away." (Well, prayer IS more effective than arthroscopy.) Sammy says he's figured out that he has to know where God is before God can hear his prayer. (Grandpa doesn't think that makes sense, either.) Sammy suggests that God may be in church or in heaven. Grandpa ignores these suggestions but leads Sammy to an answer to his question.

I'll give the author one star for not getting bogged down in a lot of theology. According to this book, God is at one with the universe, God hears our prayers, "God works through all of us."The author presents God as a good habit we can't quite break: whether we choose to be good or to be bad, God is always in us, "loving us and being patient." I'll give the author another star for daring to approach the problem of evil -- but she backs off promptly, with reassurances that this is the best of all possible worlds. Grandpa says we "must trust God" even when He says no to us, even when we're not satisfied with His response.

This approach does have its limitations. A bit ominously, Grandpa tells Sammy that God "let" Sammy get punished because he "earned that punishment and needed to learn from it." Is the implication that when bad things happen to us and the people we care about, we have it coming? That fear of punishment in this life is all we have to keep us honest? As for Sammy's mother, God is helping her through her doctors, and God expects her "to help Him help her by doing the exercises." Uh-oh: divine sanction for working out. This might not be the best book for a child whose sick or disabled parent doesn't have a good prognosis.

Parents who are trying to impart religious doctrine to their children will find a few aspects of this book unsatisfactory. That "Don't Bother God" sign on the wall of Sammy's church must be intended to elicit a chuckle. But what IS Sammy doing in church? Prayer is more than wishing. But there's no hint in this book about prayer as worship or gratitude. Sammy says he felt "funny about eating my salad" after the greengrocer told him that "God was in all growing things." How would Sammy feel about eating a communion wafer? Heaven is just something Sammy heard a TV preacher mention; as Sammy describes the concept, it seems absurd. (Hell doesn't exist for Sammy and Gramps; neither does Satan.) Although Grandpa describes God as the Creator, some may balk at his statement that "everything is part of God - even the weeds." People of a particular faith aren't quite so inclusive and vague in their concept of God. ... Read more

It doesn’t take a village to raise a child. It doesn’t even take achurch. There is only one biblically ordained group given theresponsibility—the family.

Product Description
In Real Life is a collection of true, insightful accounts about work, family relations, friendship, tough challenges, and the amazing daily dramas that life throws our way. These pages are packed with funny, sharp, warm, bittersweet, memorable, heroic, painful, and inspiring moments. In vivid little vignettes, ordinary Americans talk about the things that matter most—our homes, our dearest principles, our vocations, the love of those around us, and our faith.

Compared to the Americans inhabiting TV-land and Manhattan novels, the men and women you’re about to meet have carved out existences (often against the odds) that are bright with meaning. Among these teachers, farmers, businessmen, writers, cops, doctors, soldiers, and mothers—most with deep roots in the "fly-over" territories of our heartland—there is less cultural rot, a strong attachment to tradition, a deep reliance on God, an overriding preference for family, and abundant good sense and good cheer. ... I am really grateful for this book. I have to limit my reading to two stories per day (which is easy, thanks to its bite-sized format) because of my work and family schedule. I work for United Cerebral Palsy, and every day am fortunate to work alongside parents who will not take "no" for an answer to their child's future. They and their children work so hard to do what we take for granted: crawling, chewing, walking. These stories gave me strength to keep going, and faith that tiny acts of caring, kindness, and love are what life is all about.

My husband and I are blessed to share seven grown children. Every day at least one of them calls and needs a kind word or hope for the future. Recently, I've often been talking to them about the "story of the day" that I've just read. Thank you for this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars not as stated
this book arrived with a perfect cover but 5 pages inside terribly torn. i patched and sent them to a local charity for kids. obviously could not use this book in my basket of gifts for a youngster. this is the first book i have ever ordered that was not exactly as stated. maybe the seller should thumb through his books before stating the condition!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I strongly disagree with the negative reviews of this book.It is a very good book for a child who is growing up and is starting to be asked to take on more responsibility in his or her life, like school, chores etc. and may be having some difficulty in adjusting. It is a book that applies to most childern and I highly recommend it.My 6 year old really likes it too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of good paper
I didn't even bother giving this to the goodwill. It went right in the trash. Lucky it was a gift and I didn't waste my hard earned money!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Children
This book is not for children. If anything, it would increase their feelings of isolation and nurture their insecurities about their place in the family. It's not surprising that Ms. Schlessinger would write something like this. In fact, it seems to mirror her own life as documented in Vicky Bane's very well done bio, "Dr. Laura: The Unauthorized Biography". In short, "Growing Up Is Hard" does a far better job of telling us about Shlessinger's tormented psyche than it does imparting moral values to children. If you're looking for a child's book, pass this one up and consider something that's really for children. I'd suggest "Click Clack Moo, Cows That Type".

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrid
Laura Schlessinger's awkward text and Dan McFeely's ugly illustrations make a book neither kids nor adults will find appealing.Children won't relate to language no kid would ever use ("I hate my life!") or to the humorless, patronizing moral lesson. The best children's books are lovingly written by people who like and understand kids and want to entertain them. This object isn't really a book at all: it's another "Dr. Laura" promotional product.Reviewer "zeh" is right: you can do better. ... Product Description
Sometimes life is tough. While Psalm 1 is a very brief passage of Scripture it still remains one of the best sources of reassurance and hope during the uncertain and troubling times of life. This book offers some timeless truths to promote a healthier spiritual, inner well-being. The book draws from the four habits of the blessed man listed in Psalm 1. It reveals how life-changing these habits can be if one chooses to seriously live by them. These habits touch several subjects such as obedience, holiness, true faith, spiritual maturity, proper Christian behavior and others. The book reveals how true prosperity and blessings are not necessarily money and possessions but it is a quality of life that far surpasses material possessions. All these things and more are expounded upon in an interesting and easy-to-read style. The author has used several anecdotes to create a classic that is bound to be a blessing to all who read and practically apply it! (edited by author)  ... Read more
