Product Description
Since his landslide reelection in a state dominated by Democrats, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has arguably become the nation's most successful Republican politician. His near-universal name recognition and status as governor of the nation's most populous state have placed Schwarzenegger at the forefront of such key issues as health care, environmental protection, and immigration.

Combining liberal stands on social and environmental issues with conservative pro-business policies, Schwarzenegger has found favor with Republicans, Democrats, and independent voters, whose support has been critical to his success. Swept into office on a balanced budget and anti-special interest platform in a winner-takes-all special election, he initially fumbled on a variety of fronts but has endured with a message that resonates with voters who value problem solving over ideology.

Party of One goes beyond a portrait of a political celebrity. Detailing Schwarzenegger's gambits, missteps, and achievements on a range of issues, it suggests that the "governator" represents the future of American politics, in which practical results will mean more to voters than partisan identity. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Party of One - a chronicle of high hopes and lost opportunities
"Party of One," by veteran California newspaper columnist Daniel Weintraub, details the amazing life of America's second most important chief executive, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Weintraub begins with a brief overview of Schwarzenegger's early life in a small town in Austria, as a bodybuilder who, "...left his native country as a young man to pursue his vision of the American Dream. He believed with the passion of the converted that anyone who worked hard and focused on his goals could make it in America. Not just make it - but make it big.Fame.Wealth.Adulation.A beautiful family."

The author, befitting his profession as a political journalist, quickly fast forwards to 2003, the year of California's fateful recall of Gov. Gray Davis.During that election, Schwarzenegger promised to "tear up" the state's credit cards as California groaned under a huge deficit caused by a complete lack of spending restraint coupled with the tech bubble bursting that served to end a spike in capital gains tax earnings. It was this political promise that would serve as the central criticism in Weintraub's story; the greatest failing; the biggest lost opportunity.Weintraub writes, "Schwarzenegger's failure to deal with the long-term, structural problem in the budget - the fact that spending was programmed by law to grow faster than tax revenues - allowed state spending to rise from $78 billion when he took office to $102 billion as he ran for reelection three years later, an increase of more than 30 percent...By the time he was reelected in November 2006, the state was spending more per capita and more as a percentage of the economy than it ever had before...His goal of bringing the state's books back into the black - the defining issue in his first campaign for the governor's office - would continue to depend on little more than a gamble, a hope that the economy would perform better than his own experts expected. It might have been a good formula for political success. But as fiscal policy, it would never get the job done." Schwarzenegger's fiscal failings became increasingly obvious in 2008 as California's deficit came back with a vengeance at $17 billion.

Weintraub adequately retells the phases of Schwarzenegger's public career, his first foray into politics with his after school program initiative, his initial year in office, his failed "year of reform," his retooling by coming out with a proposal to massively borrow to build infrastructure, and his push to capture the environmental issue. All of this is set into the context of examining how Schwarzenegger, while nominally a Republican, governs with no discernable set of principles - a "liberaltarian," as Brink Lindsey coined.

Weintraub wraps up by breezing through Schwarzenegger's convincing reelection in 2006 and his efforts in 2007 to increase government involvement in healthcare, reform the prison system (something I had a supporting role in), and reform the political process.

All in all, Weintraub tells the story of a remarkable man trying to govern a remarkable state, doing some things well, but failing in other, more basic tests of leadership. Weintraub leaves the impression that Schwarzenegger could have done more and could be doing more, but somehow is falling short of his initial high promise.

Reviewer: Chuck DeVore is a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2010, a California State Assemblyman, he served as a Special Assistant for Foreign Affairs in the Department of Defense from 1986 to 1988, retired from the Army National Guard as a lieutenant colonel, and is the co-author of "China Attacks."

1-0 out of 5 stars Schwarzenegger is no friend of working people in CA and is simply a Republican in drag.
Schwarzenegger remains the tool of big business while pretending to be the "Peoples Governor".However, when
you ask the question:Which people? The answer is those who contribute to his campaign, aka, big business.
He has decimated benefits for workers injured in California and his staff illegally implemented the permanent
disability rating schedule, like the V.A. did with Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. However, a California Work-
ers' Compensation Judge has refused to use the schedule and filed a case reporting how the Schwarzenegger administration is cheating injured workers by lying to the legislature. Most importantly, like G.W. Bush, he refuses to correct the problem and has twice vetoed bills passed by the legislature to fix the deceit. We are awaiting a decision on the Boughner case to correct the problem. Please don't be fooled by his act that he is not a typical Republican. He is, and always will be, a bigbusiness Republican.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explains complicated politics clearly
This is a terrific book. It takes a very complicated and important subject -- how California is governed -- and explains it in a way that is clear, accurate and fun to read. The book is particularly valuable for explaining a much misunderstood and timely subject: Schwarzenegger's health care plan, which passed the Assembly but failed to get out a committee in the state Senate. Although this book is important and should show up on a few college syllabi, it doesn't feel like homework. Some of the writing is more than clear -- it's beautiful.

1-0 out of 5 stars EBENEZER SCROOGE, WEINTRAUB, AND RAISES
Recently, Daniel Weintraub argued that correctional officers should not receive raises. He also suggested that officers should make LESS, since there are so many applicants for the job. His logic is not only twisted, but also a reflection of the "scrooge mentality" afflicting many bosses.

In Weintraub's world, men and women would be paid the least amount possible, and unions would be banned. This means that the teacher's union would not be allowed to ask for better wages, and that the Hollywood writers (without their union) should be paid as little as possible. Because, after all, there are thousands waiting in the wings to be teachers and writers, which, by Weintraub's logic, means writers and teachers are paid too much! This flies in the face of the obvious: labor creates value (John Locke).

Also, in America, if a job is dangerous, requires skills, or involves education or training, we pay more for that career-- which is why NFL players, despite "only having a high school education", are paid more than Bee writers! Why don't we don't hear Weintraub and his cronies attacking the 49ers? After all, football players make way more money than correctional officers.

The fact is, officers are required to attend hundreds of hours of training (they attend an arduous academy) both on and off the job. They are educated (many have BA's and MA's) and their job is dangerous (if you don't believe this, ask the family of Manny Gonzalez, an officer recently murdered by an inmate). Officers work long hours, and yes, get paid overtime for those long hours-- would Weintraub expect them to work for free? And officers do a thankless job that neither Daniel nor his cohorts would be willing to do, for any amount of money.

As for the officers' union: membership in a union is a legal right, guaranteed by U.S. law. An officer can choose to not join the union (membership is voluntary), but he still receives union protection. Officers organized a union, because prior to the union, in 1970, a "prison guard" only earned $600/ month. At that time, guards had no training, no education, no protective equipment, no baton, and no alarm (just a whistle)-- They had just their wits to protect them. Before the union, a guard's retirement (if he lived that long) was $240/ month. So, that is where officers came from, and they don't want to go back.

Also, folks join unions for protection-- to receive decent pay and decent benefits-- which is why McClatchy and all the other newspapers destroyed the newspaper unions, over 30 years ago. Newspapers hate unions, because unions give the workers rights-- the right to speak out against abuse, the right to pick one's job assignment, the right to expose corrupt bosses, and the right to sue for better work conditions. The union, in spite of Weintraub's complaints, is less influential than the rich business lobbies, and certainly less powerful than the writer's union (assuming Daniel is a member; certainly not possible).

Contrary to Daniel Weintraub, Officer's salaries are not a major cost to the state: 41% of California's budget goes to schools and 25.3% to Health and Human Services (welfare). Corrections is only 7.3% of the budget; officers salaries actually account for less than 3% of the total state budget. With gas rising to $4/gallon, and inflation at over 5%, no pay raise means pay cut-- for a job which is dangerous, dirty and difficult.

There is a certain irony about Daniel, a wealthy man, lecturing working stiffs about making too much money. Perhaps Weintraub could take a pay cut from his cushy six-figure editorial job? Because, as Weintraub argues, a job which has more applicants than openings is paying too much. And many new journalism grads want Daniel's job! But then, ignoring or manipulating the facts is common for reporters and editorial writers at the Bee. When you have an agenda, then fair and balanced reporting goes out the window.

In ending this letter, I realize I have wasted my time: the Sacramento Bee (Daniel's boss) will never print this letter, or give equal time to dissenting viewpoints. Or, if I am "lucky", the editors will pretend to be "fair" by allowing me a hundred words or so to respond, thus crippling my comments, and making my letter impotent. After all, as all working folks know, only rich men who own newspapers have freedom of speech. The rest of us go online and read blogs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Party of One for the small table near the kitchen
Considering the subject matter, Dan Weintraub was able to capture my attention long enough to get through the book. I liked Arnold more as a paid actor saving the world than a paid politician using the State of California to perfect the art of "bait and switch". Where or where are public servants who serve the public or has public servant become an oxymoron. Kudos to Weintraub for his research and coherent presentation of a plate of "green eggs and ham" dressed up as a thought out road map to move California forward. ... Read more

Product Description
A vivid, incisive account of Governor Schwarzenegger and his tenure in California politics, by the Los Angeles Times political reporter whose unique access and insight into Arnold has led to newsbreaking revelations

California voters passed Proposition 13 in 1978. At the same time, a champion bodybuilder named Arnold Schwarzenegger was becoming a movie star. Over the past quarter century, the twin arts of direct democracy (through ballot initiatives designed to push the public to the polls on election day) and blockbuster moviemaking (through movies designed to push the public to the theaters on opening weekend) grew up together, at home in California. With the state's recall election in 2003, direct democracy and blockbuster movies officially merged. The result: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. In The People's Machine, political reporter Joe Mathews, who covered Schwarzenegger's gubernatorial campaign for the Los Angeles Times and who has subsequently broken many front page stories about him, traces the roots of both movie and political populism, how Schwarzenegger used these twin forces to win election and, especially, how he has used them to govern. "Let the people decide," said Governor Schwarzenegger after his inauguration. The People's Machine, through remarkable access and whip-smart analysis--there is news in this book--reports on whether this system of governing proves blessing, curse, or mess, and on the remarkable Austrian bodybuilder, movie star, and political man with the nerve to carry it out. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Direct Democracy - the next big thing
When a Holywood icon merges with California style democracy, something new emerges - a governorship with the people instead of for the people. Joe Mathews offers a fascinating review of a learning process by one of the globes most prominent actorts, Arnold Schwarzenegger. This extremly well-written book is less a reference to Schwarzeneggers movies than an account of what it needs to become a leader beyond tv-ads, polling tests and confrontative politics. Direct Democracy looks like becoming the next big thing - not only in America's most populous state.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun story even though we know the ending....
Mathews weaves the histroy of the California initiative process with the rise of Arnold. It's not a page turner, but it's fun to read about the personalities and quirks of the political "leaders" in California.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent blend of in-depth analysis and biographical information results.
THE PEOPLE'S MACHINE: ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER AND THE RISE OF BLOCKBUSTER DEMOCRACY could have been featured in our Politics section but is reviewed here for its far-reaching interest to general biography readers as well. Author Joe Mathews is the reporter who covered Schwarzenegger for the Los Angeles Times, so he's well steeped in the background of a famous actor who became the governor of the nation's largest state. But this covers more than his rise to power: it surveys his political struggles within the system and the new type of system he made from his celebrity image and contacts. An excellent blend of in-depth analysis and biographical information results.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at the Governator
This book is a fascinating look at a different type of politician.Far from being simply a movie star now "playing" Governor, Mathews' book demonstrates that Schwarzenegger gets involved in the details of public policy to an extent much greater than one would expect. It also is apparent that Schwarzenneger is actually interested in trying to solve some of the state's long term problems, rather than simply staking out positions for political advantage. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand recent California political history (assuming it can be understood!)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Governator: a fair and balanced look
I won't spend a lot of space going over the same ground as the two capsule reviews, but suffice to say that Los Angeles Times writer Joe Mathews has done an extraordinary job examining Schwarzenegger and how he came to be governor of California, in terms of both the man's strengths and weaknesses. While making the typical mistakes one expects of someone "new" to California politics (though he met Howard Jarvis and closely followed the machinations involved with Prop 13 many years earlier in the late 1970s), Schwarzenegger comes off smarter than one might expect.

Mathews' paralleling Arnold's business accumen and showmanship and to Hiram Johnson's much earlier version of direct democracy makes for a fascinating (and I agree page turning) read on the Governator, a Republican by party affiliation, but hardly in lock step with the GOP leadership.

Joe Mathews has managed to keep whatever personal feelings he has about Schwarzenegger in a file drawer somewhere, and takes an honest look the campaign and beyond with wit, vigor and good old-fashioned in-depth investigative coverage. In the end, whatever popularity Schwarzenegger maintains with California voters has been earned through trial and error, and hard work, as has everything he's attained all his life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Glad I could find it!!
My husband is really into Bodybuilding and he had been looking for this book as he had lost his copy from back in his teen years. I was so glad I was able to find this for him!! He was very happy to receive it!He likes this original book as opposed to the "revised" one.

4-0 out of 5 stars was the first book on bodybuilding but
yes it was thefirst book onbodybuilding published in the late 1970 .s but now in this new century pumping iron warriors are much more impressive . would need and update.

5-0 out of 5 stars great deal

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dirty Little Secret
I agree with all above that this is a fine book. I wish there were more such insightful forays into other sports. My one quibble with Pumping Iron is that whistles past the graveyard of the great dark evil, steroids. One reading this book would get the impression that all of the bodybuilders within had sculpted their physiques with weightlifting, diet, dedication, and genetics. The truth is, all the stars of that era relied heavily on steroids, as subsequent admissions by such as Arnold Schwarzenegger have revealed. That, and the near-death disaster to Steve Michalik from steroid overdose (the book attributes his great "sea change" gain of muscle mass to heavy weight training and eating a lot of chicken and tuna fish) are crucial facts for the reader to know. To ignore the dirty little secret of big-time bodybuilding is dishonest, and presents a disservice to the readership. I would enthusiastically welcome another edition of Pumping Iron, as suggested above- it's a fine book- but I would repect Messrs. Gaines and Butler the more if they would address the steroid issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars These were the real champions
I book this book back in 1973 and then lost it in a flood but was able to get a copy at a used book store. These were the real champions and pioneers of bodybuilding; Arnold, Nubret, Columbu, Zane, Corney, Waller, Katz etc.You rarely see training photo's like this and heretofore, never saw bodybuilders depicted as real people as Gaines and Butler did with this work and the movie that followed.Pumping Iron and a Mega-Superstar German with a hard to prononunce last name literally took bodybuilding into the mainstream and turned the stars of our sport into household names. While I was lucky to find a copy of this book at a used book store, I really feel that Gaines and Butler should have a reprint for people who would like a new, first class copy; perhaps even a revised version showing where those champions are today.Great book Mr. Gaines and Mr. Butler. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars thoroughly enjoyed!
I read this book and immediately wanted to go stay at Mel's hotel, the Ingleside Inn.(I haven't yet, but will someday!)He has some of the best stories that give the reader a good inside view of Palm Springs.

5-0 out of 5 stars MARVELOUS, INTERESTING & FUNNY!
This has to be one of the funniest and interesting books that has been published in recent times.Mel Haber is such a colorful character and has been all of his life and continues to be everyday! While we were in Palm Springs last year we had lunch at Melvyn's Restaurant and met the man himself.Although he has led a very interesting life he is a true gentleman. Now, we return to Palm Springs twice a year and always enjoy visiting with him. His restaurant, Melvyn's in Palm Springs is the finest restaurant on the west coast.
From the very first page, we could not put the book down until we read it all.All of the stories are true. Most people would never be brave or honest enough to write a book about their career and life in the Restaurant and Inn business but thankfully Mel Haber has.
We would highly recommend this book to clients, friends and family.Luckily for us we also get to meet many interesting characters as we travel like Mel Haber has in his life.
This is just a great book for anyone who loves life and finds enjoyment in being around other people. Thanks for a tremendous book Mel Haber! Can't wait to read your next book.

4-0 out of 5 stars All These hijinks are true, and more!
As one of Mel's many acquaintances, I had to review his book. Revenge, at least here, is sweet. First of all, Mel is just Mel. That's what you get when you meet him. Another review here has described him aptly. Of course, what the reader doesn't know is that this madcap life he wrote about still goes on, just like the events in the book. So, first you will have to read this book to get up to date, and then wait for the next book, or better yet, come down to Palm Springs and see for yourself. It will be fun for you to find out how an eager, starry-eyed restauranteur attracts the bizzare. I read this homey, true collection of harmless but embarrassing screw-ups, and it all really happens at the Ingleside Inn! I've been there. (Do me a favor Mel, clean the mirrors!) By the way, most of the profits are donated by Mel to a children's charity. Nice Mel, nice. ... Read more

'Culturismo' by Arnold Schwarzenegger is simply brilliant. Scintillating text, peerless author. These were the sentiments expressed to me recently while I was having a seafood lunch at the Manhattan Ocean Club with the Chairman of the Pulitzer Committee.

Product Description
Color Me Arnold, an original work of political satire, combines the rollicking fun of coloring books designed to entertain children (connect-the-dots, mazes, etc.) with inane quotes and lifelike line drawings of actor and governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger. Readers can connect the dots to find Arnold in a questionable activity with a female aide, draw a picture of themselves between Arnold and George W. Bush, color in Arnold as Conan the Barbarian, drive a Hummer through a maze from Hollywood to Sacramento, and more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not only for the bodybuilder
First of all I am a huge fan of Arnold's as a body builder and a movie star. When I got back into weight training I was aiming to achieve a body with similar attributes to Arnold, the physically ascetic dimensions unlike the bulky body builders of today (Jay Cutler). What I didn't know prior to reading this book is how much stretchingand activities such as and cardio swimming, dance classes, and yoga contributed to Arnolds beautiful muscular physic and elegant posing routines. With these additional physical movements such as yoga you actually help lengthen your muscles and tendons making everything flow together better and make you more lose and avoid injury such as pulled muscles. A lot of the exercises he has in the back of the book are good but I only used a couple of them since I have my own routine right now to target specific areas I am working on. The book is an awesome companion to help get yourself into the mindset you need to be a world-class body builder. There is a brief history of Arnold's upbringing and journey through his teens and into competitive bodybuilding. This book was written in 1977 and its interesting how open and honest Arnold is about "drugs" or steroids. I mean he flat out says that the American body builders had better drugsthe Austrians he trained with and got his juice from. Thats the statement he makes in the book. Anyway I think this book overall is a good short read. Over a third of the book the last part of it is totally dedicated to teaching the reader not only the proper way to do different weight lifting exercises it also has a diagram of a very fit and slender via 1977 Arnold displaying these exercise in photos which are full page which is nice so you know if your doing the specific lift such as a bench press correctly, I think he calls you a sissy or something if you do a half ass pushup. Also Arnold has near perfect form so you have a pretty good guide to make sure your fulley extended and not "cheating" as Arnold puts it. So to conclude this book is half Arnold's story through his teen and how he got to be the best body builder in the world. And the second half is purely devoted to Arnold showing and writinghow to do each one of the exercises in extreme detail, the exercise that helped him become number one and win the 6 Mr. Universe at the time it was written. One last thing the book is nice and small so if you want to bring it to the gym as a companion to make sure your doing the exercise correctly by looking at Arnold doing them you can. ... Read more
