Isabella Alden, Christian?
This seems to be a pathetic attempt at Anti-Mormon Literature, made worse as it is from a popular Christian writer who gave only one case and only one side of that case. To have re-printed it without an explaination of the true history of Polygamy is to hit the LDS Church again. Most reading this book will have never met a 'Mormon' and this will be all the exposure they get. Is that a Christian way of doing things. By the way, the LDS Church is the 5th largest religion in the USA and most of its members live outside of the USA. Very poor writing and re-printing. If you write anti-Mormon lit. at least be up front about it.

3 good books, 1 not-so-good book
I loved "Aunt Crete's Emancipation" and "A Daily Rate," both books containing mistreated aunts who still stayed "Christlike" throughout the story. "The Girl From Montana" is a similar plot to another Grace Livingston Hill book, "Ladybird," in that both books are about young girls who have lost their families in the mountains and go east to find relatives.

I agree 100% with the review created by another reader from Utah. I purchased this collection from Avon several months ago, and was very displeased with Isabella Alden's false information about Mormons - I received credit from Avon, but as they didn't want it back, I removed the slanderous Isabella Alden story and "blacked out" all references to it elsewhere on the cover. NOW it's a good book.

A delightfully clean collection of religious romance
This book actually contains four different novels: 1-Aunt Crete's Emancipation covers to touching store of a young nephew who takes over the care of an elderly spinster aunt. The aunt unselfishly serves the whims of her sister and niece at the expense of her own happiness. The story is a wonderful example of how we should treat others how we would like to be treated. 2-A Daily Rate is the winsome story of a young girl who is trying to earn her way in the world. When she comes upon an unexpected inheritance she uses it to help guide the lives of those around her so that they might find some happiness. 3-The Girl From Montana seemed a little contrived but still entertaining. The girl in question comes from the rough and tumble of the West to the refinement of the East. There she learns that people have different perspectives on what is right and what is wrong. 4-Mara by Isabella Alden is the touching account of four friends and how their lives change after leaving college. One faces the death of her fiance and another faces the devastating lies of her beloved. The final part of this story details the reunion but under the sad circumstances of one of them who has been betrayed and tricked into marriage. Be aware that the last part of the book is racist in its views towards The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, often known as the Mormons for their belief in The Book of Mormon. The guy is a jerk and a slime but some of the religious references are not true and very slanderous in tone. The story started out so nicely and wound up like a vendetta against the mormon religion that was not based on fact. I would recommend that people find out the truth themselves from the Mormons. ... A great Visual of one of the Greatest Designer EVER
I am 14 years of age, and thought this book was excellent. Any Versace fan would love this. The book is so bright with beautiful Miami inspired colors, very artistic illustrations, and wonderful pictures of his great creative designs. Though this is only up to his 1994 designs, it shows many of his best of all time. In this book, there are pages of his designs, theater designs,and more. This book is great. You never get bored when either reading the few pages to read, or when you are looking at the pictures and illustrations. It is a must have for the fashion lover, especially for the Gianni fan.

touching historical work
Having lived in "the cottage" at Sharksmouth, this book came to life. You feel the magnitude of these remarkable women from a time when it was not the norm for women. The sense of their accomplishments exudes from the pages. It is written with tenderness and wit. Truely an enjoyable read on a snowy night with a crackling fire and a glass of wine. It reminds me of "A Woman of Substance" by Barbara Taylor Bradford.

Four Boston Brahmin women break the mold
What was it that shapes character? how would you envision an interesting future for yourself, use your intelligence and energy if you were one of ten children born in the late 19th century to a prominent New England family? Isabella Halsted, a refreshingly straightforward writer, remembers her grandparents, uncles and aunts in Boston and at their Manchester summer home - a "Victorian-Gothic castle" by the sea. Of the five sons and five daughters, it is the four maiden aunts who fashioned amazing lives beyond the usual patterns of their day, or even ours. The boys went to Harvard; the girls were on their own. Healthy and strong, these young women had imagination, self-confidence and plenty of individuality. An electrifying book
I bought this book because I was just curious to read something by Grace Livingston Hill's aunt, Isabella Alden. I never dreamed: 1) that her writing is as fresh, timely, and insightful as Mrs. Hill's; 2. that these particular stories would bring just the real-life insights that my family and friends needed in their business life; 3. that multiple impossible situations in several people's lives would have near-miraculous resolutions after people borrowed the book from me and applied its healing insights to their individual crises. Thank you for making this book available again. I'm looking for more by this author. And ordering 12 more copies of this one today, so I can let people "borrow" it without worrying about having my own copy! ... Read more
