Product Description
George C. Scott (1927-1999) born in Wise, Virginia, created some of the 20th century's most memorable performances on stage and screen - the cunning prosecutor in Anatomy of a Murder, the manipulative gambler in The Hustler, the buffoonishly warmongering chief of staff in Dr. Strangelove, and, of course, the brilliant and rebellious Patton. He also played Willy Loman, Richard III, Mussolini, Scrooge, Fagin, and countless others. But his offstage life was as filled with drama and controversy as any of the lives he portrayed with such intensity. He refused the Oscar for Patton, battled with TV networks to include realistic elements in his series East Side/West Side, invested (and lost) his own money on Broadway and in the scandalous film The Savage is Loose, married five times (twice to Colleen Dewhurst) and had a tempestuous affair with Ava Gardner, traveled to Vietnam at the height of the war to write an article for Esquire magazine, and weathered a damaging sexual harassment suit. In the first complete biography of this great star, David Sheward documents Scott's artistry as well as his roller-coaster career. Featuring interviews with numerous colleagues including Nathan Lane, Karl Malden, Piper Laurie, and Eva Marie Saint, as well as friends and family members, Rage and Glory pays tribute to one of our finest and fieriest actors. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but poorly edited
I personally know the author. I was disappointed in the book.
1-It was poorly edited
2-Although Scott is described as a private man his multiple marriages and abusive, violent behavior in public seems to belie the "private" description.
3-The book starts in a serious vein but at points becomes chatty and gossipy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study of Scott -- One of cinema's giants
FINALLY A BOOK ON GEORGE C. SCOTT...AND A DAMNED FINE ONE!!!
George C. Scott was among the greatest actors in movie history, his performance in Patton (1970) one of the greatest pieces of acting ever put on film. But he was a man plagued with rage, self loathing and a ferocious temper that exploded it seems at the most inopportune times. He was a difficult interview (trust me, I tried) but possessed the ability to channel most of his rage into his work.
Sheward's book is excellent, a fine study of a man we will never understand because he never understood himself. The author captures the many contradictions that made Scott the prickly personality he was, but the writer also captures the sublime artist that was Scott.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GEORGE C. SCOTT READ.
YES, I DID ENJOY READING THS BIO FROM COVER TO COVER. HE WAS TRULY ONE OF OUR GREATEST ACTORS OF THIS PAST CENTURY. BUT HE WAS A DEEPLY DISTURBED MAN.MY MAIN BEEF WITH THIS AUTHOR IS THAT IN THE FIRST PAGES OF THE BOOK, HE NEVER ONCE MENTIONS HIS HERITAGE. I EVEN WENT SO FAR AS TO CONTACT THE PUBLISHER THRU EMAILS AND PHONE CALLS TO GET THIS QUESTION ANSWERED.NO RESPONCE!!! THAT REALLY GOT MY GOAT. NINE OUT OF TEN AUTHORS THAT WRITE BIOGRAPHIES ALWAYS , IN THE OPENING PAGES, PUT IN IMPORTANT FACTS. SUCH AS DATE OF BIRTH, HERITAGE,AND SO ON..BUT IT WAS VERY INFORMATIVE..FRANK TAGLIERI

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Author
I have other books by this author and I'm a huge fan.this is a very compelling read.I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars To Have and Have Not
I am currently writing a book on the making of "Patton" and was eager to read this George C. Scott biography, given the actor's key role in that film.I write this review with mixed feelings.David Sheward has done an impressive job of interviewing Scott's friends and family in an effort to develop the man's personality and character. He has also consulted the numerous interviews that Scott did throughout the years. These resources are usually the only type of primary resources available for doing the history of the film industry. When I was in school at USC, I quickly learned that Hollywood does a horrible job of preserving its written records.

The result is that Sheward has some news stories tell about Scott. The man was a brilliant actor with few peers, but he was horrible insecure and full of self-loathing.When things went wrong, be it on the set or in his personal life, he got angry, really, really angry. He overcompensated with the bottle and alcohol only fueled his rage.Film buffs, however, have known about Scott's personal demons for years; he was quite upfront about them.

The ultimate problem with this book is that it offer its readers no new insights into the man.Sheward--through no fault of his own--never interviewed his subject and had no direct access to letters, diaries, or oral histories. As a result, you get a feel for how Scott moved through the acting profession and how many people felt about him, but the man himself seems a little absent from his own story.

At 4:30 a.m. on April 12th 1861 Confederate forces fired upon a small Union garrison at Fort Sumter South Carolina. Thus began the Civil War during which twice as many Americans died as in World War II. It would be America's bloodiest conflict. But the changes wrought in American Government were as significant as the war's casualities. America becamenation under a strong executive power-a nation that the founding fathers scarcely would have recognized. ... Read more

Product Description

Social History of the United States is a cornerstone reference that tells the story of 20th-century America, examining the interplay of policies, events, and everyday life in each decade of the 1900s with unmatched authority, clarity, and insight.

Spanning ten volumes and featuring the work of some of the foremost social historians working today, Social History of the United States bridges the gap between 20th-century history as it played out on the grand stage and history as it affected—and was affected by—citizens at the grassroots level. Covering each decade in a separate volume, this exhaustive work draws on the most compelling scholarship to identify important themes and institutions, explore daily life and working conditions across the economic spectrum, and examine all aspects of the American experience from a citizen's-eye view. Casting the spotlight on those whom history often leaves in the dark, Social History of the United States is an essential addition to any library collection.

It's small enough to be embedded directly into your Java applications, providing a local data store that requires no DBA support. Powerful enough to support a wide range of traditional applications, this database ships as the default database for WebSphere Application Server and more than fifty other IBM software products. Apache Derby is built on the mature IBM Cloudscape code base IBM recently contributed to the open source community. The IBM Cloudscape code was nominated and won Developer.com's Product of the Year 2005 award. Now, IBM's own database experts have written a comprehensive guide to making the most of Apache Derby-and its commercial counterpart, IBM Cloudscape- in any development or production environment. This book systematically introduces the Apache Derby/IBM Cloudscape technology: where it fits and how to install and configure it-and how to build robust business applications and Web services with it, one step at a time.Coverage includes * Comparing Apache Derby with the commercial IBM Cloudscape offering * Deploying Apache Derby/IBM Cloudscape to support development and production environments, client/server environments, multi-threaded applications, and Web servers * Integrating Apache Derby/IBM Cloudscape into a completely open source development environment * Specific instruction on installing Apache Derby/IBM Cloudscape on WindowsA (R) and LinuxA (R) workstations-with tips on how to install the code on any platform that has a supported JVM * Understanding how programming languages interact with Apache Derby/IBM Cloudscape * Building complete sample applications step-by-step in JDBC, Windows (ODBC and .NET), PHP, Perl, and Python * Managing and securing Apache Derby/IBM Cloudscape databases * Writing SQL code for creating, retrieving, and updating data * Troubleshooting installations, databases, and applicationsThis book has a companion Web site that contains links to the IBM version of Apache Derby and other downloadable code, documentation, articles, and other resources to give the reader a deeper understanding of some of the features available in Apache Derby.ibmpressbooks.com/title/0131855255www-306.ibm.com/software/data/awards/ A A(c) Copyright Pearson Education. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Derby Users
The definitely guide to Derby. This offers much more explanation and information than the online documentation provided by Apache. But what do you expect... it comes from the minds at IBM themselves.

However, unlike most of IBM's publications and documentation, this is actually readable and informative. You don't have to wade through a series of unknowns and missing pieces of the puzzle in order to figure out what IBM was trying to actually get at.

This will not only help you define and work with Apache Derby, but also make your applications lighter, faster and easier to deploy.

5-0 out of 5 stars From IBM's own database experts
Apache Derby is the only open source, pure Java RDBMS database and APACHE DERBY-OFF TO THE RACES comes from IBM's own database experts and tells how to make the most of Derby and its commercial counterpart IBM Cloudscape. Learn how to support development efforts, install Derby on both Windows and Linux systems, how to understand how programming languages interact with them, and build sample applications step-by-step: everything is here to learn the fundamentals and troubleshoot virtually any problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid addition to your programming bookshelf...
If you've ever been curious about using or integrating Apache Derby (or IBM Cloudscape) into your project, here's the book you'll need...Apache Derby - Off to the Races by Paul C. Zikopoulos, Dan Scott, and George Baklarz.Very well done...

Contents:On Your Marks... Get Set... Go!!! - An Introduction to the Apache Derby and IBM Cloudscape Community; Deployment Options for Apache Derby Databases; Apache Derby Databases; Installing Apache Derby and IBM Cloudscape on Windows; Installing Apache Derby and IBM Cloudscape on Linux; Managing an Apache Derby Database; Security; SQL; Developing Apache Derby Applications with JDBC; Developing Apache Derby Applications with Perl, PHP, Python, and ODBC; "Your Momma Loves Drama" in JDBC; "Your Momma Loves Drama" in Windows; "Your Momma Loves Drama" in PHP; "Your Momma Loves Drama" in Perl; "Your Momma Loves Drama" In Python; Web Site Contents; Apache Derby and IBM Cloudscape Resources; Troubleshooting Hints and Tips; Index

Derby is one of those technologies that has remained "under the radar" for awhile. The Cloudscape database from IBM was released to the open source community under the name Derby, and basically those two packages are the same core code.Cloudscape has a few more add-ons and support from IBM, but if you learn one you learn them both. The authors do a very good job here in helping the reader to understand the architecture and benefits of having a small-footprint embedded relational database system in your application. The start of the book lays the groundwork very well, and establishes the "why" of Derby. But rather than remaining a high-level overview, they dive into the core of the software, showing how to install it, work with it, and how to secure your data. The real value comes when they take a sample ticket application ("Your Momma Loves Drama") and shows how Derby can be integrated the application in a number of different languages.Even if you don't necessarily know Perl, PHP, or Python, you should be able to follow along enough to extrapolate how the concepts can be applied to your platform of choice. After reviewing this book, I've got some ideas on how I'd like to play around with this...

A very solid addition to your programming bookshelf.Between this book and the online resources, you should have everything you need to master the Derby/Cloudscape software.

5-0 out of 5 stars aggressive promotion of Derby
Apache Derby is a very promising package that is being freely offered, as both source code and binaries. This book is an aggressive promotion of its virtues. The authors stress many things about Derby, or its IBM sidekick, Cloudscape.

Derby addresses a persistent need amongst many Java programmers for an easy to use SQL database. Often, a Java programmer has only cursory expertise in coding for a full database like IBM's DB2 or Oracle. Best usage of these often requires you to be a DBA.

By contrast, Derby comes as a Java JAR file, and can be plonked into your programming environment just as any other JAR file. The book explains in depth how to then interact with Derby, at the level of your Java source code. You can see that you get a pretty powerful engine. Including features like stored procedures and user defined functions, that let you optimise for speed.

Speaking of speed, that is perhaps the biggest possible drawback of Derby. It is run as Java bytecode in a jvm, which is not quite as fast as a package compiled into native binaries. The book seems to deprecate this aspect, but you should be aware of it.

You might find Derby useful enough that you don't have to migrate to a full database like DB2. The book stresses that the code you write to interface with Derby will also do for DB2. There is a potential problem here for IBM, if it loses DB2 business to Derby. But maybe it feels that if it never promoted Derby, then sooner or later, an equivalent product would come along.

Obviously, to use Derby, you still need to know basic SQL statements. And some understanding of how to develop related tables to hold your data. The text is not meant to teach you these skills.

The first chapter also makes various cogent points about the advantages of using Derby. With sometimes unintentional hilarity. A passage says the intent is not to besmirch Microsoft. But despite this pious protestation, it proceeds immediately to do just that. By opining that Microsoft's SQL Server has a 5 year lag between upgrades - Server 2000 and Server 2005. While Derby has source code available, and a much faster cycle for introducing new capabilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very hard to put down
I've always been a fan of Scott's, I believe he was the best actor the U.S. ever produced. However, even as a kid I can recall having heard that this was a very intense man. This book explains why. He was a heavy drinker most of his adult life. When drunk he could turn on the woman he was with. Those stories are supported by other bio's I've read about Ava Gardner & Collen Dewhurst (twice married to Scott). But the book also gives insight into the man & why he may have had this problem. He was by all accounts a kind person when sober. But the Hyde side took a serious toll on his private life. (& sometimes his professional life as Truesdell- Riehl's book points out). It is a very well written book for a first time author also , very good read. Especially if you happen to be a George C Scott fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deeply Moving Book
On camera George C. Scott was the man that every woman wanted & every man wanted to be.Off camera he was a man who wrestled with bitterness & insecurity. He harbored anger ever since his childhood & when he became an adult he took it out on everyone close to him.He dealt with his insecurities by trying to control & manipulate the people closest to him.The people who loved him tolerated his behavior & still wanted to be with him costing them their own peace of mind & in Karen's case, a promising career in theatre.Even after his brilliant success in theatre & movies he remained insecure & bitter. It makes your heart ache for Scott & those whom he hurt.

This is a compelling & sad story.Karen Truesdell Riehl does not hold back but tells the whole story; warts & all.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Woman Scorned
Everybody knows the star of Patton was a brilliant actor but not exactly a warm and fuzzy human being. Ms. Truesdell Riehl's account of her relationship with Scott is a compelling story of his destructive influence on innocent lives. There is no self-pity here, though. The author's narrative is laced with warmth, wit, and the wisdom that comes only from hard experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Tell All Story
Love and Madness is not only a titillating story of a celebrity's secret love life, it is a penetrating look into the heart of a woman who had to live with the scandal of an out-of-wedlock birth during the 1950's, when women caught in those circumstances were considered sluts. Truesdell Riehl's courageous and well-written story will remind you of how far we've come since those days, when living in a home for unwed mothers and following your heart when your head knows better were matters to be swept under the carpet and shared only in whispers and knowing smiles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living in the Shadow of a Star
Truesdell-Riehl's story of her 30-year clandestine love affair with George C. Scott is a gripping tale, beautifully told. The author met and fell in love with Scott when she was in her freshman year at Stephens College and he was a theatre instructor. After acting with him in summer stock following her graduation, Truesdell-Riehl gave up a promising acting career to go to New York with Scott, working as a dental assistant, while he pounded the pavement in search of acting jobs. Her story, written with both wit and wisdom, provides insight into the tormented life of this international film star and the woman he called the love of his life. It's a page turner I couldn't put down! ... Read more

Linwood Holton, Jr. Abner Linwood Holton, Jr. (born September 21, 1923) was the 61st Governor of Virginia , and the first Republican governor since Reconstruction . He was governor from 1970 to 1974. Holton was a member of the mountain-valley Republican Party (GOP) that fought the Byrd Organization and was not in favor of welcoming conservative Democrats into the Virginia Republican Party . Political career Holton was the Republican candidate for governor in 1965 but was defeated by Democrat Mills E. Godwin, Jr. . In 1969 Holton won the gubernatorial election. In 1970, when forced busing was an issue in Virginia, Holton voluntarily placed his children (including future First Lady of Virginia Anne Holton ) in the mostly African-American Richmond public schools garnering much publicity. As governor he pushed hard to field Republican candidates in all statewide races instead of endorsing conservative alternatives. When segregationist Harry F. Byrd, Jr. broke ranks with the increasingly liberal Virginia Democratic party and ran as an independent for the U.S. Senate in 1970, Linwood insisted on running a Republican candidate rather than endorsing an independent. This eventually led to the nomination of Ray Garland. Byrd went on to win the three-way election with an absolute majority. Holton also encouraged a moderate Republican to run in the special election in 1971 to choose a successor for deceased Lieutenant Governor J. Sargeant Reynolds another election which was won by an inde... ... Read more
