Hey, It's a book about Tom Selleck!
The book is well written. It's basically about what young actors go through before he or she is recognized in Hollywood. All the ups and down, etc. A lot of information on other actors/actresses. Sometimes author tells stories that don't have much (if nothing) to do with Mr. Selleck. Pictures are great. This is the definitive reference on the relatively little-known topic of the early attempts to fire metallic cartridges in former black powder pistols. Exactly What It Says
I got this book for my dad for Christmas, not knowing what it was like or anything.It is pretty much formatted like an encyclopedia would be, hence the name.As far as quality of the book, it is similar to the average school textbook...nice hard cover and about the size of the average math, history, etc. book.It has some pictures in it, all black and white, and the western movies are listed in alphabetical order through the book.Very good reference if you are just wanting to know what a movie is about, who is in it, the director, year, what company produced it, etc.It runs fairly recent up to Young Guns and possibly some other recent movies.My dad is an avid western collector, so now he has something to reference them by.

A great gift for the western-nut
This book is a walk down memory land for those of us who grew up on western movies.I gave it as a gift to a friend who is truly addicted to westerns.Now if someone would only write a book on the movie horses the stars rode, we'd all be fascinated.

Indispensible reference
For the casual to the serious western movie fan this is THE reference. Much in the way of storylines, cast and credits. Of great value when deciding which western DVD release to add to your collection. And at the rate they are turning out new westerns today, this reference is unfortunately going to be current for a long time. Well worth the price.

Great Western Reference
Herb Fagen's The Encyclopedia of Westerns is a great reference book for Western movies.It includes entries for over 3,500 Westerns, with most getting a plot synopsis and some comments from the author on the quality or significance of that particular film.Fagen's comments are interesting and sometimes insightful, and the information provided is fairly comprehensive.

Brilliant performance
This was the best audio book I've ever heard.It was like watching a film, as you experienced the story and never felt you were just being read to.I would recommend this audio book - with reader Richard Armitage - to anyone.

Excellent performance! This is the version to have.
I've listened to all of Bernard Cornwell's Saxon series in audiobook format (and read them in hardcover, too) and this is the best of them all. Richard Armitage's reading is vastly superior to the other narrators (Tom Sellwood, Jamie Glover, and Gerard Doyle). Mr. Armitage is a master storyteller. His narration does not sound like the book is being read (as it sometimes does in the other versions) -- it's being performed -- no, it's lived. The pacing is impressive -- calm and contemplative when required, intense and passionate for the action sequences. He adds just the right level of humor (sometimes wry but without too much sarcasm) which is sorely lacking in the other audiobooks.

Mr. Armitage's range of voices and accents is astonishing. He's lucky to have such flexible vocal chords to be able to go high enough yet gentle for the women and children and never sounds false or forced. Hild, Gisela and Thyra are particularly wonderful, exuding patience, passion and rage. I lost count of the number of male voices he created but the range is stunning -- some very bass, some very tenor -- age, class and region all incorporated so smoothly that at times I forgot that one person was creating them all. Every voice, even the least incidental ones, has a distinct character.

It's a shame that Amazon doesn't sell this version but you can get it through audiobookcollection{.com}. This company is in the UK but they do ship overseas. I truly hope that Mr. Armitage will be available to record an unabridged version of Sword Song, the next book in the series. ... Read more
