3-0 out of 5 stars An OK overview of a wonderful artist.
Although sometimes listed as 228 pages, this oversized quarto (@ 9"x12") is really 225 pages plus title page and endpapers. There are 98 full color plates and 80 black and white plates, plus black and white photo illustrations illustrating the life and work of Ivan Bilibin, Russia's most famous turn-of-the- century artist and illustrator (1876-1942.)

The book includes 28 color illustrations from his best-known early period, including watercolor illustrations for "Vasilissa the Beautiful", 29 illustrations from his later work, including "The Golden Cockerel", 28 color examples of his theater design work and approximately 11 color examples of his landscape paintings (I'm missing 2 pages of my copy) in addition to black and white illustrations which include paintings by and of Bilibin.

A biography of the artist is, of course included. It provides a general overview of his life from his student days, his first commission to illustrate Russian folktales, his exile to Egypt following the Russian revolution, his work as a theater designer, his return to Russia in 1936 and his premature death during the siege of Leningrad during World War II.

The art is wonderful, but the book could be better organized. ... Read more

Excerpt: Leon Trotsky (Russian: ·), Ukrainian: (Lev Davidovich Trotsky, also transliterated Lyev, Trotski, Trotskij, Trockij and Trotzky) 7 November 1879 21 August 1940), born Lev Davidovich Bronstein (Russian: ), was a Bolshevik revolutionary and Marxist theorist. He was one of the leaders of the Russian October Revolution, second only to Vladimir Lenin. During the early days of the Soviet Union, he served first as People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs and later as the founder and commander of the Red Army and People's Commissar of War. He was also among the first members of the Politburo. After leading a failed struggle of the Left Opposition against the policies and rise of Joseph Stalin in the 1920s and the increasing role of bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, Trotsky was expelled from the Communist Party and deported from the Soviet Union. An early advocate of Red Army intervention against European fascism, Trotsky also opposed Stalin's peace agreements with Adolf Hitler in the 1930s. As the head of the Fourth International, Trotsky continued in exile to oppose the Stalinist bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, and was eventually assassinated in Mexico, by Ramón Mercader, a Soviet agent. Trotsky's ideas form the basis of Trotskyism, a term coined as early as 1905 by his opponents in order to separate it from Marxism. Trotsky's ideas remain a major school of Marxist thought that is opposed to the theories of Stalinism. He was one of the few Soviet political figures who was never rehabil...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=17888 ... Read more

This book by Y. Kobelev is about that great Vietnamese, Ho Chi Minh, who distinguished himself in the world communist and national liberation movements. It shows his part in organizing the Working Party of Vietnam and what he accomplished after the August 1945 Revolution, in the resistance against French colonialists and in the war against the U.S. aggressors. His contribution to building the new society is vividly described. Excerpt: Alexander Nevsky is the score for the 1938 Sergei Eisenstein film Alexander Nevsky, composed by Sergei Prokofiev. He later rearranged the music in the form of a cantata for mezzo-soprano, chorus, and orchestra. It has remained one of the most renowned cantatas of the 20th century. The score was Prokofiev's third for a film, following Lieutenant Kijé (1934) and Pique Dame (1936). It was composed of 21 sections, and Prokofiev was heavily involved not just with the composition, but with the recording as well. He experimented with different microphone distances in order to achieve the desired sound. Horns meant to represent the Teutonic Knights, for instance, were played close enough to the microphones to produce a crackling, distorted sound. The brass and choral groups were recorded in different studios and the separate pieces were later mixed. Prokofiev employed different sections of the orchestra, as well as different compositional styles, to evoke the necessary imagery. For instance, the Teutonic Knights (seen as the adversary) are represented by heavy brass instruments, playing discordant notes in a martial style. The sympathetic Russian forces are represented by more folk-like arrangements, played with more consonance. In 1993, the first complete recording of the original film score was made for a new edition of the film, in which Prokofiev's score was entirely re-recorded in hi-fi digital stereo by the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Yuri Temirkanov. While the new version of the film was released in 1995, the score was recorded on March 16 and 17, 1993 in Philharmonic Hall, St. Petersburg and released on the RCA Vict...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3339835 ...
