Product Description
Now anybody can raid Chloe Sevigny's wardrobe! Re-inventing the looks of 1989 for 2008, Sevigny has designed her first collection for the discerning New York/Los Angeles boutique Opening Ceremony. It's a concise and carefully assembled collection, comprised of 40 pieces, and this volume presents each of them as photographed by Mark Borthwick, who first shot Sevigny for Purple magazine 10 years ago. The collection was inspired by the teen fashions of the late 80s and early 90s in Connecticut and New York, where Sevigny grew up, and further inflected by the looks of "women who are outrageous yet effortless--Liz Goldwyn, Cecilia Dean, Angelica Houston, Marlene Dietrich, Debbie Harry, Poison Ivy, Slim Keith, Patti Smith." In Sevigny's vision, calico and Liberty prints might be matched with gingham check trousers--each piece evokes a look but can be combined to many ends. In this mix-and-match volume, in which each page is split into two separately flippable sections, Sevigny models each ensemble with a minimum of fuss, allowing the clothes to speak for themselves. Borthwick's ethereal photographs are complemented with drawings by Marika Thunder, Rita Ackerman, Lizzie Bougatsos, Benjamin Cho, Dan Colen, Matt Damhave, Amy Gartrel, Lily Ludlow and Spencer Sweeney. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy it as a Sevigny fan. Probably for completists only (or fashion mavens).
I'm a far cry from a cutting edge fashionista. I bought this book as a Sevigny fan and it does not disappoint on that score. The pages are cut in half so you can flip around and see different garment pieces with other tops/bottoms. There is no text. There are a few hand drawings and cartoons.

There are some lovely shots of Sevigny. I'm not qualified to speak on the fashion but it does look fun/flirty/60's styled.

I'd enjoy reading some reviews from the fashion side. I don't really know anyone else who loves the actress enough to spend this kind of money on a few pretty shots that are cut in half. If you are on the fence, see it before buying. ... Read more

Product Description
Actress-designer Chloe Sevigny marks the debut of her new line of unisex menswear with this limited-edition hardcover volume. First called on to model her collection of tweedy wools, Fair Isle knits, and animal print jacquard sweaters, Chloe's redheads became muses for a project focusing on the curious place of red hair in our culture. Curated by Sevigny, Reds features contributions from Slater Bradley, Peter Coffin, Matt Damhave, Brian DeGraw, Joe DeNardo, Brendan Fowler, Jess Holzworth, Matt Keegan, Karen Kilimnik, Nate Lowman, Marlene McCarty, Jack Pierson, Rob Pruitt, Aurel Schmidt and Kon Trubkovich. Original works by these artists accompany images by David Armstrong, shot on location at the photographer's townhouse in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. In addition, redhead lore from Lily Ludlow explores centuries of redhead mythology, which variously described the fair-skinned, freckled breed as temperamental, magical, unlucky, jolly, beautiful and deviant. ... Product Description
Dear Diary is a collection of more than ten years of diary entries (based on the hugely popular monthly feature in Vice Magazine) juxtaposed against present-day updates that take us from Lesley Arfin’s middle school years in the early 90s to her clean and sober twentysomething years in New York City. When she wrote about Cynthia Karacas (it’s funny how you remember everyone’s first and last name like that) making her feel "retarded" back in 10th grade, the world was a dark, lonely place and she could see no light at the end of the tunnel. When she discovered heroin, things got even worse. Today, with the perspective that only rock bottom can give you, Lesley looks back on the apocalypse that was adolescence and asks, "What the hell was I talking about?" Lesley’s hilarious updates remind us how heavy it all seemed back then and how irrelevant it all really is in the face of adulthood. When she digs up all her old friends and enemies to get their take on each entry, a whole new perspective is added. Some are eager to apologize, while others are still mad because, "Let’s face it, you were a loser." No matter whom she talks to about the days we all discovered sex, drugs, and rock ’n roll, one thing is abundantly clear: we were ridiculous. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than nothing I suppose..
I recently had a trip from Tokyo to Seoul, and was wanting something short and interesting to read for the trip.I've been into Vice magazine for a while, and took the fact that they published it as a recommendation.I picked up the hardcover version of this book for about $5.00 in a used bookstore and can say its not that bad of a read. The beginning parts are a bit boring - Honestly who cares about the social life of a junior high school girl in 1991?I thought it was a good idea for her to call the people today about the incidents that happened almost 20 years ago, but they almost always came off leaving me for more.A typical interview went like this:

Arfin - Do you remember why you were so mean to me in 6th grade?

old classmate - I think it was because some other girl told me to be mean to you, but I don't remember for sure. Its OK though, because later on I got a taste of my own medicine because people were mean to me.

Arfin - OK!Thanks, bye!

This exact conversation happens a few times in the book.

The last 1/3 of this book was quite interesting. The author describes her descent into drug addiction and her stays at two addiction clinics.I wish she would have expanded more on this, as the stories and people talked about here were really interesting. It was a bit of a letdown to know that after more than 3 months of staying in these places, we get little more than 10 pages to read about them.

Overall a so-so read.Leslie is no doubt a good writer, her descriptions of people and events made me smile a few times, but I just don't think this subject matter was worth writing about. While reading it, you'll feel like the first half is stretched really thin in order to make a certain page count. There really isn't much going on, but there's a lot written about it.Unless you can pick this book up on the cheap, or have a particular interest in the lives of adolescent school girls, I say skip.Wait for her next book which will no doubt be a bestseller.

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm a better writer
Wow. You'd think a person's writing skills would improve from age 11 to age 25 but Lesley's improve only marginally. She's a terrible writer. The reason she gets published is she includes tales of drugs and sex, but these are so shallow. Also, to anyone that's actually DONE drugs, her stories are well, just not interesting. The main thing is, there's really not a lot of detail there. Also these entries were supposed to funny? Mildly humorous AT BEST.I give her two starts instead of one though because I found it interesting that she went back and interviewed those from her past That showed some initiative and actual work.

If you want to read hilarious funny Jewish girl druggie angst More, Now, Again by Elizabeth Wurtzel is a million times better. Or, although he's not a Jewish girl, a very funny and insightful, well-written take on addiction is Dry by Augusten Burroughs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring
Scary to think that the author is my age and created nonsense such as this.Good grief. If you want frankness, read Crank or Go Ask Alice.

There are snippets of things from her "diary" from when she was twelve and after each snippet she makes a comment about what had happened at the time of that entry then proceeds to "interview" people that had affected her in that entry as adults.

What the hell?

It was a bit confusing at first because you're trying to figure out who the hell she's addressing in these "interviews" and then have to wonder why in the hell she's even bothering to bring up old crap from the past.I mean seriously?

The entries, for all I know, could be made up or embellished. It's ho-hum boring, I did touchy feely, sexual things, drugs, hated my parents, hated my friends...just typical angst.I mean really?Funny? Not.

Why didn't she just write a memoir instead?Or even better...not write at all.

I think the only good thing that came out of this...book....is that you know that Vice Books will publish crappy work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Girlfriend's Guide to Drug Use
I found this book appalling.Like another reviewer I picked this up thinking it would be a good beach book.

The writing is juvenile, the writer self absorbed.Rather than a cautionary tale, I thought it came off more as a teen guide to how much fun it is to abuse drugs and alcohol. Her advice to teen girls on first time sex - make sure you are really, really drunk. The descriptions of herion use were contradictory. At times she said it was bad, but mostly she talked about how great it feels.

I am pretty liberal, but I certainly wouldn't want my teen daughter reading this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough
I couldn't relate to this book at all. I mean, I know it's not meant to make everyone go "Omg, that was totally me!" but it was just too far gone. The only thing that made it bearable to read 'til the end -- were the commentaries. And that's not good enough. The drug usage was too much and too prevalent in everything. There was far too little information and detail to patch all the stories together throughout the book, as well. ... Read more

Excerpt: Chloë Stevens Sevigny (pronounced ; born November 18, 1974) is an American film actress, fashion designer and former model. Sevigny became known for her highly individual style and broad fashion career in the mid-1990s, both for modeling and for her work at New York's Sassy magazine, which labeled her the new "it girl" at the time, garnering her attention within New York's fashion scene. Sevigny made her film debut with a leading role in the controversial Larry Clark film Kids (1995), which was the beginning of a long line of roles in generally well-received independent and often avant-garde films which she starred in throughout the decade. It was not until 1999 that Sevigny gained serious critical and commercial recognition for her first mainstream role in Boys Don't Cry, for which she received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress. Sevigny has continued acting in mostly independent, critically acclaimed art house films, such as American Psycho (2000), Party Monster (2003), The Brown Bunny (2003) and Dogville (2003). In 2006, Sevigny gained a leading role in the HBO television series Big Love, for which she received a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in 2010. 5-0 out of 5 stars For a Chloe Sevigny fan, a great get
I enjoy Sevigny and I bought this 20 page booklet and 6 1/2 minute film on DVD as a whim. It was part of an ad campaign for Ritz Jewellery (their spelling). The booklet has high quality paper and lovely shots of Sevigny in her various poses in the film. The DVD (which is copy protected) has a beat voice over and Sevigny acting out multiple personae. It is professionally done and produced. I treasure it as a collectible. ... Read more
