Excerpt: Christopher Eric Hitchens (born April 13, 1949) is an English-American author and journalist. His books, essays, and journalistic career have spanned more than four decades, making him a public intellectual, and a staple of talk shows and lecture circuits. He has been a columnist and literary critic at The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, Slate, World Affairs, The Nation, Free Inquiry, and a variety of other media outlets. As a political observer, polemicist and self-defined radical with an astute historical knowledge, Hitchens rose to prominence as a fixture of the left-wing publications of both his native United Kingdom and United States. Hitchens's departure from the established political left began in 1989 after what he called the "tepid reaction" of the European left following Ayatollah Khomeini's issue of a fatw calling for the murder of Salman Rushdie. The September 11, 2001 attacks strengthened his embrace of an interventionist foreign policy, and his vociferous criticism of what he called "fascism with an Islamic face." Hitchens's adoption of interventionist foreign policy, employment of the term "Islamofascist" and his notable support for the Iraq War have caused his critics to label him a "neoconservative". Hitchens, however, refuses to embrace this designation, insisting himself to be not "any kind of co...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=228998 ... Read more

She most recently appeared on Broadway in a revival of Blithe Spirit as Madame Arcati, for which she won her fifth Tony at the age of 83, tying her with Julie Harris's record for most Tony wins. Lansbury has been appearing since December 2009 in a well-received revival of Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music as Madame Armfeldt (for which she has been nominated for a Tony as well). 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a Delightful Little Book
Actress Jane Seymour and husband, actor James Keach, have created a wonderful series of books in which their family of cats stand-in for their own family, allowing them to share their experiences as parents and at the same time delighting children with the tales of their twin kittens, "This One and That One."In this marvelous little tale, the twins are joined by the latest member of the family, a little sister dubbed, "The Other One".

Watch as the kittens play Catboys and Kittens, eat ice cream, paint, play catch, and pull their newest little sister in a wagon. This would be charming book to give a new mom as it shows the loving relationship between a new baby and her older siblings who play with her but also take care of her by rocking and pulling her in a wagon. As with their other books in the series it is handsomely illustrated by Geoffrey Planer.

A very cute, little 16 page hardcover book with a dust jacket.Perfect for toddlers and pre-schoolers and anyone with a new addition to the family.

5-0 out of 5 stars DELIGHTFULLY AMUSING!
Actress Jane Seymour and her husband, Actor James Keach, are among the latest celebrities to jump on the children's book bandwagon and are doing so very successfully. They've created a wonderful series of books in which their family of cats stand-in for their own family, allowing them to share their own experiences as parents and at the same time delighting children with the tales of their twin kittens, "This One and That One."

"Fried Pies and Roast Cake" addresses an issue that parents of young kids have always faced...the different wants of the kids and keeping them all happy. It's lunch time and Lady Jane cat asks This One and That One what they want to eat. Each of course wants a completely different menu.Mom tells the kids to decide soon. They ask Dad for help but Dad tells them to work it out. After much bickering, the kids decide to share and come with a crazy, mixed up menu that mom knows will be unappetizing.Mom finally suggests taking a couple of suggestions from each of them and making some today and some the next day.

Funny and charming, "Fried Pies and Roast Cake" is definitely the most amusing book by Seymour and Keach. The kids arguing over what they want is something that most parents can relate to.The book also teachs kids the value of sharing and compromise and in the end, both sides are happy.Once again, Geoffrey Planer provides colorful and fun illustrations that make this book a winner. ... Amazon Exclusive: Editorial Director Elda Rotor on Classics That Never Go Out of Style

Dear Amazon Readers:

Penguin Classics is pleased to publish three new Penguin Classics Deluxe editions of Wuthering Heights, The Scarlet Letter and Pride and Prejudice, with covers designed by world-renowned fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo.

With Penguin's history of excellence in book design and following the success of our continued series of award-winning deluxe editions with covers by leading graphic and comic artists, we wanted to explore another inspiring world of design for Penguin Classics. Roseanne Serra, our art director for this series, which we call in-house the Couture Classics, had the vision of inviting fashion illustrators to create specially commissioned art work.My first choice of an artist to ask was Ruben Toledo, whose work I have admired since I was a student combing through pages of the earlier incarnations of Paper and Details magazines. I always found his drawings of women dressed in the latest styles to be so imaginative, whimsical and surreal, that they could be characters out of beloved novels.

Ruben agreed to draw these three covers, each in a different medium of ink, watercolor or pencil, because he was attracted to the idea of creating covers for a younger generation of Penguin Classics readers and to promote literacy. They are "not your mother's Bronte" as Glamour tagged the set.Our hope is that these vibrant covers will entice general readers and students with an interest in design to delve into the stories that inspire these artistic creations. We hope that book lovers, those that cherish the old-school feel of a physical book, who love book design, fonts, and the all-around aesthetics of a beautiful book, will want all three.

Cathy and Heathcliff, Hester and Pearl, and Elizabeth and Darcy are the literary muses for these covers, and readers will enjoy Ruben's interpretations of these classic characters plus the mood, texture, and scenery inspired by them. From front to back cover, extending even to the French flaps, each cover represents a refreshing representation of the classic work through Ruben's unique artistic sensibility.

The fun of these covers is that they reiterate that classics are relevant for every generation, especially the latest one. Liesl Schillinger for the New York Times blog identifies the fun in seeing the aesthetics of today's youth embodied in Toledo's art: "Was Heathcliff--the wild child of Wuthering Heights--a 19th-century emo boy? Can you picture Jane Austen's Lizzy Bennet as a Regency gossip girl, and Darcy as her Mr. Big in knee breeches? And what about Hester Prynne--was she Nathaniel Hawthorne's idea of a colonial yummy mummy?" Nylon first blogged about Toledo's series, and the tongue-in-cheek challenge to judge a book by its cover: "While his surreal take on the Yorkshire moors or his Technicolor vision of Hester Prynne might not change the actual details of the plot, they certainly add a stylish edge to book club mainstays."

I've heard that people love the Wuthering Heights cover because it exudes the same dark Gothic sexiness of Twilight's Edward and Bella. (How perfect that Bella herself reads Wuthering Heights for advice on her own love life.) Toledo's details capturing Cathy's persona are mesmerizing, and the chic mysteriousness of Heathcliff peering above his collar captures the perfect bad-boyfriend tone.

The stark black and white Pride and Prejudice cover in silhouette is precise yet witty.(I love the chair on the back cover.) Ruben has a little extra for readers of Pride and Prejudice with a frontispiece of extra “accessories” for the cover's characters.

But my personal favorite is The Scarlet Letter cover.I love the gossiping women, who extend to the French flaps of the cover, emphasizing the size of Hester's scandal. For the font-crazed, Ruben creates various fonts of the letter "A" tacked along the fence. The rose bush, a classic image that appears in 19th-century illustrated editions, is the perfect anchor to this modern interpretation.Look at the ravishing Hester entangled by the mark she must wear on what might be a cashmere sweater dress with an utterly intimidating Pearl in tow in what could be Wolford baby tights. With such alluring images, who wouldn’t be compelled to read these novels?

What went through Ruben's mind in creating these covers?Ruben discussed his process with Women's Wear Daily, "I did approach each story as abstract images--visual quotes from a dream. As I read, I was playing the animated movie in my head. These masterpieces are all so well written."

We hope you enjoy all three books. We hope they spark your imagination and stir up passion for the classics, for Penguin Classics, so timeless and trend-setting, they never go out of style.

Best wishes,
Elda Rotor

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a classic for a reason
As an English teacher, I always look forward to the point in the school year when my students ask me to name my favorite book.Every year, I see their puzzled expressions when I choose The Scarlet Letter.Perhaps Hawthorne's masterpiece is out of place in our fast-paced world, our ridiculously simplistic culture where a book has no value unless Will Smith can play the hero in the movie version. If these criticisms of the novel are true, the fault lies with us, not with Hawthorne.

The Scarlet Letter is a story of complexities - the complexity of love, the complexity of sin, and the struggle to find who you are in a society that demands conformity. How could anyone not identify with Hester, a woman whose only crime is in not covering up her mistakes as well as everyone around her does? How could anyone not sympathize with Dimmesdale, a man trapped between who he is in private and the mask he wears when he steps outside his door?

That anyone can criticize the book as too wordy is beyond me.Saying The Scarlet Letter is terrible because there isn't enough action is like saying Transformers is a better movie than Casablanca. The details in the novel are there for a reason.Hawthorne is creating a world, a Garden of Eden, where the choices facing his characters are not as simple as the one facing Eve, though the effects are just as devastating.

As a reader, if all you look for in a novel is "who did what," then try the latest slop on the bestseller list. The characters will all fall into neat categories, there will be some painfully obvious moral, and best of all, you won't have to think. But if you want to read a story that forces you to define who you are and what you believe, try classics like The Scarlet Letter.Trust me, you'll find these books a more rewarding experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good One Book Night of Entertainment
Quick read because the book is really a short story and some of the character language can be annoying but necessary per the theme of the novel .Interesting read especially since the book was written in the late 1800s but set in our future. Not your typical "end of the world" novel with all the "glitter" and multiple story lines like Earth Abides (same genre) but for being written so long ago the author hit the nail on the head per the cascading long-term effects of a "Scarlet" event.

5-0 out of 5 stars color
My son wants to know why the cover of this book is bright green since that seems to have nothing to do with the story.I told him it was probably because is was a cheaper version and they used whatever color card stock they had sitting around the printing company. What do you think?

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrific forced reading
I will never understand why they force this book on school children, I'm sure there are many other "classic" stories that could be included in the curriculum.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unable to Review
Unfortunately, I have to say that I am very very disappointed with this order. I ordered this book on Sept 2 for my daughter to read and write a report about for school. (Report is due Oct 25) and to date, October 9, I have NOT RECEIVED it yet. When I contacted the vendor to report last week, I basically received a "sorry for your luck, but once it leaves our hands, we really don't care" type of response. Totally not impressed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Much more readable and "in the trenches" than Volume One
After spending a volume dwelling on all the events that took place to at last produce the American and National Leagues as we know them today, Seymour uses the second volume to at focus on the players, profiling the great ones (Cobb, Walter Johnson, etc.) as well as giving interesting factoids about pennant races, teams, managers and players.I'm about half way through and it's been a much faster read than Volume One.

Keep in mind, though, that while these are rightfully acclaimed histories of The Game, if you are looking for detailed recollections on a particular pennant race, team, etc., you will need to look elsewhere. This volume covers 1903-1930 in 492 pages. In addition, if you're hoping to use footnotes or endnotes to do deeper research or just to check the source material, you're out of luck. There are none.

4-0 out of 5 stars Like An Old Friend.
I had first read this book during the early 70's when I was Still in my teens, because nostilgia has a way of destorting things this book was not quite as great as I remembered it to be. Nevertheless it is still great a book, for those of us who understand that in History while Wars,Summit Meetings and the like have (and should ) thier place, so should the more ordinary aspects, of our cultural life. The portions of this book that deal with Ty Cobb's insanity and racism Hal Chase's corruption, "Judge Landis's" overated qualties, and the fact that the 1919 World Series scandal was merely a means to an end, rather than the actual cause of the overthrow of The National Commission, for me anyway make for great reading, I would urge anyone intrested in American culture, or just loves baseball/nostilgia to purchase this book here. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection, well acted. Serling was a genius.
This collection (the first of four) radio dramas, based on scripts by the late master of the strange, Rod Serling, presents four explorations of the dimension known as "The Twilight Zone".Narrated by Stacy Keach, who gives a certain eerie presentation as the narrator (though not in the same league as Mr. Serling, still eerie). The four stories presented are well acted, by James Keach, Jane Seymour, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Tim Kazurinsky. The "commercials" are kept to a minimum, which is good.Still, a fine collection (I look forward to listening to collections 2-4.) [Refers to cassette edition, bought also cd edition.]I contacted the producers of the series, and unfortunately, there is no print equivalent (as the scripts are owned by the Serling estate, which, one day, will [hopefully] publish them).Serling was a master and a genius.

3-0 out of 5 stars "The Ads Kill It"
The stories are done well enough but the frequent, repetative commercials just kill the experience of the audio tapes.I turely resented having to sit through them and, as much as I love the Twilight Zione, I will not buy any more from this series beause of them.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Waste
When word got out that "The Twilight Zone" would make its move to radio with Stacy Keach filling in for Rod Serling as
host, the response was generally on the order of, 'Uh,
how can you go from TV back to radio? And why
Twilight Zone to make the regression?' Well, the producers
of the series obviously saw no problem with it...they
pay CBS their fees, get the product on the shelves,
and collect the cash from the sales.

This is, unfortunately, another example of an

over-commercialised, slapdash attempt to revive
and sequelize a classic masterwork....sort of like
taking Shakespeare and cutting out all the middle-English
so everyone on the planet can understand it in "plain"
English. Bad example...and call me a mindless dolt
for using it. But that's exactly what's happening
with these Twilight Zone radio dramas.

The producers hooked Dennis Etchison, an excellent
writer, to expand and water-down the great old stories
of Rod Serling (and yes, the stories of Richard Matheson,
Chuck Beaumont, and other writers are going to be
adapted for radio as well, sans a few segments
that don't work well on radio including Matheson's
near-silent "The Invaders" and Serling's highly visual
"Eye of the Beholder"). Sadly, it is all too apparent
that Etchison knows, deep down, that the work of
the old writers can't be topped. For a show like
"The Twilight Zone", whose domain was almost like
a world parallel to our own, with the entire universe
as its breeding ground,
to take its stories and bring them back to the mundane and the reality-grounded
as radio programs is pointless. These first two sets
really come off as no more than bland recitations of
old stories that fans know inside and out from the
original TV versions.

The actors for the first series of eight dramas
include Jim Caviezel, Lou Diamond Phillips, Tim
Kazurinsky, Jane Seymour, James Keach, Blair Underwood,
Kim Fields, Chris MacDonald, and Ed Begley Jr.
Of these, only Jane Seymour does a credible job
as star of Serling's episode "The Lateness of the Hour"
(which originally starred the late Inger Stevens).
Tim Kazurinsky and Lou Diamond Phillips do earn
their paychecks with fairly humorous performances
in episodes "Mr. Dingle the Strong" (originally
starring Burgess Meredith) and "A Kind of Stopwatch",
respectively. The rest of the actors quite obviously
have no clue as to what they were doing, reciting
all their lines as if read directly from a cue card
(which in fact is probably what they did!)

In the role of ersatz-Rod Serling, the narrator,
Stacy Keach pretty much mails in his performance.
His readings of the intro/closings are but
lacking the gripping sincerity and meaning that
Rod always imparted to each and every narration.

Further hampering the dramas is the inclusion
of sponsor commercials, which pop up several
times. The CD versions are all one continuous
42-minute track with no option of fast-forwarding
through the commercials unless done manually.

In short, this new radio series does not yet offer
anything that the original series didn't. The
days of good ol' radio are gone, never to return.
But there are many more of these dramas still yet to
be released. Collections 3 and 4 have already
been released and do offer some nice sound
effects and a fabulous performance by Morgan
Brittany in episode "The Passersby". So perhaps
there's hope. Brittany is the first actor who
appeared in the TV series, to star in these dramas,
and more celebrities are reportedly going to
appear in future installments. Stay tuned...but
keep the volume on low until the producers come
full circle and prove their worthiness to carry
Rod Serling's gauntlet.

4-0 out of 5 stars You have to give these guys an "E" for effort!
Okay, So I was all geared to be disappointed with this whole package. And, unfortunately, the producers picked the weakest of the four stories to begin the set. The actor in "A Hundred Yards Over the Rim" sounds like he just walked out of some ivy league acting school and not like a hardened pioneer who has been wandering through the desert for months on end.

The next story, "The Lateness of the Hour," is ruined by a too-long explanation of the "daughter" being a robot at the end. Does it take that much explanation for today's "dumbed-down" society? I hope not.

But the next two shows blew me out of the water. Lou Diamond Phillips is superb in "A Kind of Stopwatch." His over-the-top performance is one of the greatest I've ever heard in any radio drama. Then "Mr. Dingle, the Strong" followed and it was wonderful, too.

Another plus is the original Twilight Zone soundtrack music which is used and other pains that are taken to maintain the flavor of the original classic TV series. I would suggest buying one collection and seeing if you like it before buying the second.

This is not everyone's cup of tea, but the people who put these dramas together did the best they could and it's well worth a listen. ... Read more
