3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great
After watching this DK DVD and their Volcanoes DVD, I'm getting seriously disappointed with the DK brand. This one was okay, not great. It quickly glosses over important information, doesn't give any diagrams and sometimes doesn't even provide good corresponding visuals that would support the details given in the dialogue. Some of the footage is truly excellent and interesting, but unfortunately it often feels rushed in it's presentation, so that it's hard to feel like you got much out of it. It's like you're zooming from one thing to the next without much depth (granted, this is a short DVD, but still). The narrator is not great - kind of monotone and sometimes it's hard to hear him well.It also spends *A LOT* of time repeating over and over the "fact" that all these insects "adapted" and "evolved". If you have a problem with that I would steer clear of DK movies altogether because it is definitely a central theme.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great video but disappointed in one thing
I bought this dvd because it has a praying mantis on the front, and my children LOVE praying mantids. However, other than the praying mantis that crawls across the screen when the menu comes up, there is no praying mantis on this dvd.We watched it through several times thinking we had missed it, but it is just not there.Considering they put a mantis on the cover, I would assume there would be one in the dvd, but there is not.
Other than that personal disappointment, the dvd itself is really good.I always enjoy Martin Sheen as a narrator and the footage of the insects is great.

Product Description
Gandhi realized that he had first to live the life of a peasant to understand what it is to be an Indian. It will lead him to shed his westerners clothing, and don a simple loincloth, be subjected to racial slurs from none other than Half naked Indian Fakir; Mobilize awareness of local industry and less dependence on imported clothing and material; the historic dandee march for withdrawal of the salt tax; a fast unto death to stop the virtual slaughter of British troops by irate Indian mobs; and be imprisoned several times. Gandhi will soon realize that it is not enough to be just an Indian, for India has many facets - Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Jewish, and Christian. The British relied on these many facets as an excuse for their continuance as they wanted to ensure that the minorities are not oppressed by the Hindu majority. Concerned over the inroads made by Gandhi to unite the Hindus, Muslims, and all others under a common umbrella, the British invited Jinnah for talks, and it is here that a seed was laid for a separate country called Pakistan. When Gandhi came to know about this, he pleaded with Jinnah to unite the Muslims, even take over as the first Prime Minister with his choice of Muslim candidates for Parliament, but separatist Jinnah had already made his mind. The World Wars of 1914 and 1944 having taken it's toll on Europe and Britain in particular, the weary British finally decided to leave India in 1947 - not the India they had conquered - but an India that was ready to be divided in East Pakistan and West Pakistan. Now after the much awaited independence was the real test for Gandhi - a test that will make him or break him - as he started a fast unto death to try and stop the violence that was threatening to break out into a civil war, not realizing that he had indirectly fanned Hindu extremism, which would later be called the Shiv Sena, into taking the matter directly in their hands to ensure that Muslims are kept out of their Hindustan forever. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Soul's life.
It all began simple enough - with the purchase of a first class train ticket by Mr. Mohandas Gandhi, Esq., recently arrived in South Africa, and unaware that as an Indian, he was required to travel third class and not entitled to such a ticket. Literally thrown off the train for his transgression, the young attorney, embodied to perfection by Ben Kingsley, spent a full night sitting on the platform, musing how best to respond to such discrimination. Shortly thereafter, and after consultations with established members of his community, he wrote his first treatises and organized his first demonstrations. And when participants of a protest assembly stood up and proclaimed their willingness to die in the fight against suppression, Gandhi once and for all formulated his doctrine of nonviolent protest: "They may torture my body, break my bones; even kill me. Then they will have my dead body - not my obedience."

Shot largely on four Indian locations, Richard Attenborough's nine-time Oscar-winning biography of Gandhi is a sweeping epic that takes the viewer back to Britain's colonial past, covering all major events of Gandhi's political career from its beginnings in South Africa to the March to the Sea and India's independence, and contrasting the luxurious lifestyle of the foreign rulers with the poverty of those they governed; that India which, as Gandhi soon realized, not only the British didn't understand, but whose population also could not have cared less about the activities of the Indian Congress Party, at the time little more than a group of well-to-do city dwellers mentally and socially almost as far removed from the rest of their country as the British. Twenty years in the making, the movie is clearly reverential of Gandhi's genius, and of the man whose symbolic growth was reverse parallel to his retreat into simplicity, and who for that very reason, and because of his unfaltering commitment to nonviolence on the one hand and India's independence on the other hand, accomplished what only few people would otherwise have thought possible: to convince the world's biggest colonial power to give up the crown jewel among its colonies; and to do so in a gesture of friendship and without civil war. The one aspect of Gandhi's life that falls a bit short here is the effect that his overbearing symbolic status had on his family life, which necessarily had to suffer as a result (unable to cope with his father's fame and chosen lifestyle, Gandhi's eldest son, for example, threw himself into a life of alcoholism and prostitution). But Gandhi is not depicted as a saint, and particularly during his early years, we learn about the struggle that went into the formation of the man who later earned the title "Great Soul" (Mahatma). Even anticipating that he might be killed by an assassin's bullet, Gandhi once said that he would only deserve that title if he could accept that bullet with Rama's (God's) name on his lips: fittingly, the movie begins with his assassination and comes full circle at the end, affirming that Gandhi truly was a Great Soul throughout.

Attenborough found his perfect Gandhi in Ben Kingsley, who not so much plays but truly is the Mahatma; from his appearance to the inflection of his voice, attitudes and gestures. Over the year-long struggles to finance the movie, Attenborough's first choices for the role had grown too old to convincingly play the young Gandhi in South Africa, but eventually Michael Attenborough pointed his father to Kingsley, then with the Royal Shakespeare Company, who reportedly won the role by meeting Attenborough in full Gandhi makeup at their first get-together, thus instantly convincing him that he had found his man. Yet, despite his gift for mimicry and his part-Indian heritage, Kingsley nevertheless turned to his Indian co-stars, particularly Rohini Hattangadi, who plays Gandhi's wife Kasturba, to fine-tune his portrayal; and he recalls in an interview for the movie's DVD release that the skill he found the most difficult to master was to spin and to talk at the same time. The use of the actual British newsreels covering Gandhi's visit to England adds to the movie's sense of authenticity - and emphasizes yet again Ben Kingsley's achievement in transforming himself into the Mahatma.

In fact, his awardwinning performance so overshadows every other actor in the movie that it would be easy to overlook the fine performances of his costars, all of whom contributed to the movie's unique quality - to name but a few, Sir John Gielgud, whom Kingsley praises as "a national treasure" (British viceroy Lord Irwin), Roshan Seth (Pandit Nehru), Martin Sheen (New York Times reporter Vincent Walker), Candice Bergen (People Magazine's Margaret Bourke-White), Ian Charleson (Gandhi's early friend and colaborator Reverend Andrews), Edward Fox (General Dyer, the man responsible for the massacre at Amritsar, who testified at his court-martial that his intention had been to "teach a lesson that would be heard throughout India"); and Trevor Howard as Judge Broomfield, who had to sentence Gandhi to prison for his outright admission that he was guilty of the charge of advocating sedition because of his belief "that non-cooperation with evil is a duty and British rule in India is evil," and who nevertheless rose at Gandhi's entrance into the courtroom instead of making the prisoner rise for him, and commented on the sentence he had to impose that "if ... his Majesty's government should, at some later date, see fit to reduce the term, no one will be better pleased than I."

The movie ends with Gandhi's affirmation that when he despaired, he remembered that "all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers; for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of this: Always." Such a belief may be difficult to hold on to, particularly for us who are so much more fallible than the Mahatma. Yet, this movie eloquently pleads that it is, at least, worth our very best effort.

Product Description
Tom Clancy's Patriot Games is filled with the exceptional realism and authenticity that distinguished the author's two previous bestsellers, Hunt for Red October and Red Storm Rising. Patriot Games puts us on the cutting edge of another type of war -- the international battle of terrorism.

Years before the defection of a Soviet submarine will send him hurtling into confrontation with the Soviets in Red October, Jack Ryan, historian, ex-marine, and CIA analyst, is vacationing in London when the Ulster Liberation Army makes a terrorist attack on the Prince and Princess of Wales. By instinctively diving forward to break up the attack, he gains both the gratitude of a nation and the hatred of its most dangerous men. Jack Ryan must summon all of the skills and knowledge at his command to battle back against his nemesis.

Patriot Games is a major new film from Paramount starring Harrison Ford.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book
While the book was as advertised, hard bound, I wasn't aware of exactly what a turtle back was. Whne th book showed up, it was indeed hardbound, but the size of a paperback. I can't fault the vendor for my ignorance though. The service was prompt and the product was in the condition advertised

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Thriller
Like many people, my first exposure to Tom Clancy came by way of the film version of The Hunt For Red October, still one of my favorite submarine movies of all time and still a top contender for Best Hairpiece Used By A Scot Playing A Russian. Many years and repeated viewings later I read a few opinions that compared the pace of the book very favorably to the film, o I bought the book and was floored by how great it was. In the meantime I had also seen Patriot Games, and again loved the film.

For this reason, and based on the great reviews the book has, I decided to again read the book that the film was based on and again I have come away impressed. In terms of chronology, this book actually takes place before Red October as Jack Ryan is struggling to decide whether to work officially for the CIA. While on a research trip to the UK, he is inadvertently caught up in an assassination attempt on the Prince of Wales and his family. In foiling the attempt, Ryan becomes a target for a radical cell within the PIRA that sees his intervention as a personal insult. If you've seen the movie, you know the basic framework. If not, I'll try not to spoil anything further for you.

First let address concerns raised by other reviewers for this book. Yes, Jack Ryan does come through as an almost perfect man, and the dialogue between he and his wife does get syrupy and nearly laughable. The moral deliberations on the Irish issues with the UK apparently rankled some who were more familiar with what went on, but for me it didn't make a difference. Chalk that up to my American lack of knowledge on what exactly went on, so if you have strong opinions on that conflict you may find yourself annoyed at the stance Clancy takes, which I will agree is strongly pro-Britain. Even so, outside the boundaries of the political arguments I found myself sharing his disdain (through Ryan) at the tactics of terrorists who would kill innocent children.

Outside of those failings, however, I found a expertly paced thriller that captured the breakneck action of the best spy films right there on the page. Some were less than pleased about the hospital section, but I was impressed that rather than just skip over the recoveries of the injured we got a taste of the aftermath of violence. Too often a person gets shot and is jumping the hoods of cars a week later, here we see the deliberating effects of a single bullet. Outside of that, the sections that dealt with gunplay and combat were deftly handled, with a careful sense of location and tension. In what seems to be a realistic fashion, life and death often results from mistakes made rather than a plan working perfectly. After years of James Bond and Jason Bourne, there is a welcome feel to trained men still falling prey to fate, and a turn of the weather making the difference in success or failure.

In the end, if you're looking for a taut thriller that feels more realistic than the scenarios we often see on the screen, you'll probably find a lot here to like. If you enjoyed the movie, the book will appeal as well. A great read.

KINDLE SPECIFIC COMMENTS: As other reviewers have said, there are some embarrassing errors in the Kindle version. `If' gets substituted for `It', `comer' for `corner', etc. Not a deal breaker by any means, but it is occasionally distracting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book - not so great Kindle edition
I've been a Clancy fan for years and love this series. However, the Kindle edition has some obvious flaws apparent right from the beginning. The initial quotes in Patriot Games from Edmund Burke and William Webster are simply not in the Kindle edition. Also, I believe the publisher used some form of OCR (optical character recognition) to input this book.Words like 'corners' in the hard-copy edition come across in Kindle as comers. Not a big deal, but jarring nevertheless. While I love the convenience of carrying around the whole series without the need for a backpack, this kind of sloppy, lazy data transfer gives e-books a bad name.

3-0 out of 5 stars Clancy's psuedo-politics continue
The character of 'Jack Ryan' looks good on the big screen, and ideal for cheap entertainment--but on paper our morally virtuous, ever-correct protagonist is simply unbearable. I mean, how many scenes of corny dialog between Ryan and his wife do we need to tread through to know that our esteemed Uber-patriot is a faithful family man?Clancy is just so stuck up with his fascist outlook he fabricates a faultless, working-class Irish American just for purposes of lambasting the IRA (Provisional IRA wing)--now, I am not a IRA apologist; but Clancy's story at times made me wonder if it was written by some ignorant Anglophile! Clancy's view on the Troubles--projected through the 'conscientious' Jack Ryan--is all too ignorant and disturbing; instead he wastes paragraphs lionizing the Royal Family (he even has the cajones to state that the media reports on the rocky marriage of the Prince and Princess Wales--based on Charles and Diana--are fabrications, which we all know was NOT). Not to mention that Clancy's military fetish and obsession with the Royal Navy and SAS and whatnot borders on smarmy ingratiation. The sad thing is, there's actually a good story behind this fascist facade; the procedurals and joint agency activities of the CIA, FBI and Customs make for interesting reading...only to be ruined now and then by the protagonists's (the author's) shameless ruminations of military fascism.

Join Dan as he learns to live as a peaceful warrior.

This international best-seller conveys piercing truths and humorous wisdom, speaking directly to the universal quest for happiness.Amazon.com Review
During his junior year at the University of California, DanMillman first stumbled upon his mentor (nicknamed Socrates) at anall-night gas station. At the time, Millman hoped to become aworld-champion gymnast. "To survive the lessons ahead, you're going toneed far more energy than ever before," Socrates warned him thatnight. "You must cleanse your body of tension, free your mind ofstagnant knowledge, and open your heart to the energy of trueemotion." From there, the unpredictable Socrates proceeded to teachMillman the "way of the peaceful warrior." At first Socrates shatteredevery preconceived notion that Millman had about academics, athletics, and achievement. But eventually Millman stopped resisting the lessons, and began to try on a whole new ideology--one that valued beingconscious over being smart, and strength in spirit over strength inbody. Although the character of the cigarette-smoking Socrates seemslike a fictional, modern-day Merlin, Millman asserts that he is basedon an actual person. Certain male readers especially appreciate thecoming-of-age theme, the haunting love story with the elusive womanJoy, and the challenging of Western beliefs about masculine power andsuccess.--Gail Hudson ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Typos
I loved the book. But the transformation from paper to kindle was horrible. Tons of typos that left me trying to figure out exactly what word was supposed to be in that place. I felt more like a copy editor at times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've ever read
I have read this book at least 15 times in the last 20 years.I underline things as I go and review it when I feel a bit lost in life.I have bought 10 copies as I keep lending it out and it doesn't come back (which is ok with me - I'm just happy it's helping someone else!)BTWmovie was pretty good too, very well done, true to the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspired!
Inspiring and spiritual, this book gave me the "AHA" moment again and again. It was difficult to put the book down. I felt inspired and enriched by the words and wisdom throughout this book. Finding the 'Peaceful Warrior' within. I felt the magic as I read through it, wanting more and more. I loved it. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for that spark to begin their journey or just to add more beauty to their lives. Amazing read.
Isabella Gentilin - Author of 'Whispers of an Angel'

2-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't sure what the book wanted to be
Many of the events in this book are said to be true, but the book is fictional. Right from the start, I was yearning to hear Dan Millman's true story, not a fake one. And I never got past that. As a guide to changing lives, as the title suggests, I applaud the author's efforts to introduce spiritual elements into everyday living. An introspective way of life can be rich and rewarding, and for those searching for deeper meaning this tale points the way. Clearly, many people have found it useful.

As a novel, the characters are one-dimensional and the dialog clunky and there's not much of a story. It's seems to be stuck between fiction and non-fiction with elements of both mixed together, although we don't know which is which. There doesn't seem much point in reading a fake autobiography unless it has a good story arc. Maybe if the main character's name wasn't the author's name I wouldn't have been so hung up on this. It's kind of Dan Millman's story, but not really. If it's going to be a novel, I would've been more interested in a captivating story that demonstrates spiritual growth and development rather than fictional characters telling me how to do it. However, I'd rather Dan just write a autobiography that's true. Either one would've been better than something in-between.

If a reader wants to learn meditation and an introspective way of living, I'd suggest one of many good authors/teachers in Zen or Work-centered practices. Not this book. However, I gave this book 2 stars because it may lead someone to deeper study in these areas and, for that reason, it would be worthwhile.
