Product Description
When the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee recently recommended that police officers, magistrates, judges and crown officers should publicly register their Masonic membership, it was very largely thanks to the ammunition provided by Martin Short's investigative tour de force. His "Inside the Brotherhood" carried on the pioneering work begun by Stephen Knight's explosive account "The Brotherhood".

Approximately half a million men in the British Isles - another five million around the world - are Freemasons. "Inside the Brotherhood" examines what kind of men join the Craft - and why. It investigates the occult elements in Masonry, whether its rituals should be seen as a religion - and, if so, what god is being worshipped. And, relying on first-hand evidence wherever possible, the book probes the extent to which the Masonic oaths of mutual aid and secrecy have contaminated the fraternity, aroused mounting hostility from churches, politicians and public, and provoked charges of corruption in key areas of British life, including the police force, local government, the City, and the secret services." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent journalistic overview
This is a crucial survey of Freemasonry, building on (and in some places correcting) Stephen Knight's book. Despite some slightly sensationalist packaging, Short has produced a sober assessment which, while critical, avoids silly conspiracy theories. Short does catalogue a number of abuses and questionable practices, but these are mostly attributed to the complacency and incompetence of an unaccountable leadership. With the scandals that have bedevilled other institutions since Short's writing, such a portrait is all too-believable. The book deals mainly with the UK, but there is also a very useful chapter on the P-2 affair which discusses Italian-language materials.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pure Fiction
It is amazing how some will prostitute the truth to sell a book. Books such as Born in Blood are more accurate speculations of the nature and roots of the Masonic fraternity, which is all that the organization is. What is truely sad is that these falsehoods take on a life oftheir own. The book was written from ingnorance and has only perpetuated ignorance.

1-0 out of 5 stars A distructive force against a socieity of frienship.
The book shouldbe boot, it is a sinister evilness that try's to hurt and offend a socieity of brotherhood thru the all seeing eye of God.

I wasted my time reading about lies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that is forcing the British House of Commons to act
The 1996-97 Session the Home Affairs Committee of the British House ofCommons, published "Freemasonry in the Police and the Judiciary:Volume I" with a recomendation that, "police officers, magistrates, judges, and crown prosecutors should be required to registermembership of any secret society and that the record should be availablepublicly." This first step to control Masonic corruption in governmentcan be credited in part to the Martin Short's book "Inside theBrotherhood" andStephen Knight's book "The Brotherhood".Required reading for anyone interested in understanding theinstitutionalised corruption of Freemasonry's good-old-boy network.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your Money
A very lively and fictional tale of how Masonry is taking over the world.Another world conspiracy book, with the unfortunate problem of not being accurate.Proposes that the real control of Britain and the world is through Masonry.Read " A Pilgrim's Path" by John Robinson instead.I wonder if I can get a refund. ... Product Description

The best-selling college rhetoric for over 20 years, The St. Martin's Guide has an unparalleled record of proven success. From the beginning, Axelrod and Cooper have taken the best of classic and contemporary theory, filtered it through their own and their colleagues' classroom experience, and then blended the result into a flexible classroom tool. Their step-by-step guides to writing specific kinds of essays were a groundbreaking concept and changed the way writing is taught in American colleges. The course continues to change, and Axelrod and Cooper continue to innovate: source-based writing, analysis of argument, online teaching, and visual rhetoric are some of the focuses of this latest revision. By seamlessly incorporating practical, class-tested solutions to these new challenges, Axelrod and Cooper have once again provided the best foundation for college writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars book came in really good condition
there is nothing wrong with the book so far. It came in good condition, almost close to new.

5-0 out of 5 stars English book
Well whats to say. It is an English book required for college English course.
It is pretty clear and straight forward in content, and quite useful in writing essays.

4-0 out of 5 stars A readable guide to better writing
I bought this book because I had no real choice not to. It was after all required by the teacher of a required English class. Much to my surprise I found it be a well organized, easy to read book that presented an approach to developing writing skills that I think I will think will help me develop writing skills without the usual pain. The book gives examples of the skill they want to develop then guides you through writing exercises designed for that skill. This is helping me to focus on each area in turn. I like the book. I am not usually a big fan of English books but this one will stay on my self long after the class is over. ... Read more

I read this book years ago, but I can still recite two of the stories in it almost word-for-word.It helps that they're short (every story has to be under two thousand words), but some of the stories are really exceptional. And for those that aren't great... big deal! How long doesit take to read two thousand words? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Trippy.
What a weird story. It goes in all these different directions, but never gets so crazy that you can't suspend your disbelief. There are several twists in the story, but the one knock on it is the various twists and turns all happen in short order - boom, boom, boom - and that can be a bit disorienting for the reader. But it's not too much of a problem.

It also has an ambiguous ending, but subsequent readings reveal clues related to solving the story's big mystery.

The only disclaimer is it's, unlike other short stories by this author -- which tended to be more PGish -- this story is more of a PG-13esque story.

It's pretty good, though. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good collection of women's writings
Wendy Martin set out to create a glimpse into the complex lives of women with More Stories We Tell, and has accomplished it with resounding success. This collection of tales covers the range from poignant to alarming, the varying styles blending to form what any editor of an anthology hope to achieve: a collection that coherently illustrates the full depth and artistry of each of the authors, highlighting their ability to create emotionally charged and engaging prose.

The culturally diverse nature of the writing, jumping from the African-American experience to white middle-class suburbia to Asian and beyond. It transcends cultural differences through the choice of stories that at their hearts and souls convey some universal message, while simultaneously opening the readers' eyes to varied cultures.

From the family relationships shown in the works of Stephanie Vaughn, Mary Gaitskill, and Grace Paley, to the love relationship stories by Margaret Atwood, Sandra Cisneros, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Andrea Lee, the many facets of womanhood today are given their time in the spotlight. Each author offers her own gem of wisdom about life, and the collection is as a vibrant multicolored string of beads, each contributing its own beauty to the whole. It is a must read for any woman who wishes to find herself in the pages of a book, or for any man who wishes to learn a little about the women of today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Anthology
This is a pretty fantastic anthology of recent short fiction by American women. I used it for a women's writing class I taught a couple of years ago without having first read it through and I found it as funny, strange, wild and exciting as my students did. A book club might not like this book, but Female undergraduates (and male), English majors especially, like it immensely, at least that was my experience of using it as an academic text. I'm about to adopt it for another course (a couple of years after first teaching with it)-- that's the extent of the impression it left on me. The stories are not dull, in the least. HIGHLY recommended, even for the reader who just wants something he or she can dip into from time to time.

1-0 out of 5 stars More Stories We tell: Short stories by North American women
These stories are garbage. Not one of the women in my book club (all sophisticated readers) enjoyed this book.Save your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Benchmark writing from an editor of long standing
The anthologist, Wendy Martin, edited one of the best anthologies of women's writing long ago, in 1990, when Tama Jamowitz still had artistic currency. That book was called, "We Are The Stories We Tell" and it was quite a popular book of its kind. Now, 14 years later, a sequel creeps in with a different cast of characters. It's funny whose writing is now "out" who was once "in." Martin seems determined to give us a different kind of E-Ticket ride this time around, but some of her old favorites have made it back into this book as well. Thus for exanple, both books feature the ubiquitous Joyce Carol Oates, as well as the slightly tarnished Bobbie Ann Mason and Canada's Alice Munro, whose stature has been firmly cemented in the years since WATSWT #1 was launched.

In addition, Ann Beattie is here, even if we haven't heard that much from Ms. Beattie since the glory days of "dirty realism." Her star has been supplanted by younger others, including ZZ Packer, the Bay Area wunderkind who went to Stanford as a Stegner Fellow, and Marisa Silver, whose stories of Hollywood lives are as poignant as anything written by Nathanael West or Dawn Powell. In addition, a fair number of more experimental writers have crept in, thus no more Flannery O'Connor, instead we have the wonderful Amy Hempel and the satisfactory Lynn Freed. The turnover is just beginning. But a woman reviewer might have other things to say, and different social significances to be noted. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great sci-fi short.
Won't take you more than 5 minutes to read it, but that's what it's supposed to be: A great sci-fi short.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good.
I like this story a lot. It has a setting that isn't commonly used for a science FICTION story (NASA) and manages to weave in several different references that aren't so run-of-the-mill, such as JFK and the Manhattan Project.

The ending might be a bit clunky but it works well enough not to ruin the story. Overall, I'd say it's pretty good. ... Read more

A pseudo-sequel to the Grimm Brothers' classic tale.

If you will recall, in the original story, Rumpelstiltskin helps the miller's daughter please the king by turning straw into gold. The king is so happy he marries the daughter, making her queen. Then, after the king and queen have a son, Rumpelstiltskin returns wanting the child as payment for his help. The queen defeats the gnomish creature by speaking his name, and forcing him to flee.

So...how'd he get the gold?

Didn't you ever wonder where that little troll got his hands on so much gold? Some say it was magic. Well sure, magic is how he got it to the miller's daughter. But where'd the gold come from?

He stole it from a Sheik. And he was most displeased to learn he'd been robbed.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites from this author.
A great idea making it a sequel to the classic old fairy tale. Some great additions to the mythos and a great ending.

Recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great premise with a good ending that falls just short.
Clever use of the fairy tale; making it a pseudo-sequel.The only major problem with the story is the pacing. It starts off very deliberately, leading the reader to think it's a longer story than it is. By the time the third act arrives, it races to the finish and ends rather anticlimactically. It's not too bad, though, and the story itself is very original.

Overall, it's a great story, with only a good ending.Still: recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Uneven, as expected. Great that is has different voice actors, recommended!
This is a selection of stories read by various authors, based off The Dreamsongs collection. George R. R. Martin provides three sections of commentary for each of the three sections. In fact the first section, which is teleplays in the paper collection, is just commentary by Martin for about 30 minutes. He also adds some commentary on the section Doing the Wild Card Shuffle and The Heart in Conflict. The last one isn't that exciting but the first commentary talks all about his Wild card anthologies that he edits and how it got started. All of the information in the commentaries was really invaluable information pertaining to Martin the writer.

The audio commentary was done pretty well. It is always a bonus when you get separate authors per story, as we get here. When the protagonist was an old man we got a voice that was old. When the protagonist was female we got a female voice. There was one story "The Skin Trade" that was told from two different perspectives, one male and one female. At first it was rough going to follow along, but as it got further into the story it got easier to understand. This was a hiccup in an otherwise pretty good job of voice acting for this collection.

The stories were mostly pretty good, but The Wild Card stories were average. I got a re-read in here with "The Hedge Knight" which is a very good novella. "The Skin Trade", which I haven't read before was an excellent horror/mystery story. While stories like "Under Siege" and "Portraits of His Children" were both solid stories. All-in-all this was above average work and fun to listen to. ... Read more

Product Description
This historically arranged anthology of short fiction by top American and international writers provides a comprehensive collection of both the classic stories as well as the most effective, relevant, and engaging modern and contemporary short stories. Through four distinct historical units, the author looks at the development of the short story as a genre. The historical introductions and visual spreads that begin each unit help instructors and students place the stories they read in a broader context. In addition to delineating the history and future of the short story, the anthology provides a comprehensive collection of classical and traditional stories and demonstrates the liveliness, flexibility, and dynamic nature of the genre. This dual focus grounds students in the tradition of the short story genre and gives them an appreciation for its contemporary context. Unlike many introductions to short fiction, this anthology includes a strong representation of newer works by international and American writers. ... Read more
