As a professional police informer, Ron Farebrother is the first to reveal his undercover life in a book. His trade is treachery, but always, he says, for the public good. In the words of a Scotland Yard veteran, "Ron is better than any undercover cop, worth a hundred phone-taps, a thousand public appeals." In this book he tells all his trade secrets. This is the inside story of a prolific police informer who has worked for the last six years to bring dangerous criminals to justice, in his own way. 4-0 out of 5 stars Greatness in many mediocrity in some
I have been a Big fan of George R.R. Martin recent works for a while and after seeing this book in the kindle store i had to have it. For me one of the most engrossing aspects of this book were theessays about Martins life and how he got into that specific type of genre writing in the first place. It really was enjoyable to read the progression of genres and writing style that of Martin.

There was four sections of this book. Early writing/comics, fantasy, scifi, and horror. For me the personal essays of the comic section was the most enjoyable but the writing was its lowest quality in general in that section. There were some gems in the scifi and fantasy sections but i feel like the quality of the horror section was by far the best. Of my top 5 short stories in the book 3 were in the horror section and there was only one subpar short story for me in this section.

I throughly recommend this book to anyone at all but especially to any Martin or short story fans. Other then getting through a couple subpar stories the vast majority of this collection of short stories was truly excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars georges sci fi awsomeness!
This book is full of Georges short stories he published throughout his career. Many incredible sci fi short stories and personal revalations about his writing are revealed here. A must have for Martin fans, and some good sci fi for fans of the genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars The essays alone are worth the price of the books
The Dreamsongs volumes are not a complete collection of GRRM's stories. They provide a selection of work from throughout his career, with each section introduced by an autobiographical essay telling about a little of his life at the time, and how he came to write these particular stories. As the subject says...those alone were worth the price to me. The stories themselves are the bonus.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gift
I purchased this and another George Martin book, as a gift. They ended up purchasing the set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable
I enjoyed this book. It was great to have intros throughout the book by Mr. Martin, letting you into the background into his life and how he came to writing certain tales. It's also fascinating to read asa time sequence to see how he found his voice over time. While not all of the stories are fantastic, the vast majority are above average and should capture your imagination. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description

Albert Donoghue was Reggie Kray's right hand man, his minder and chief executive. He was deeply implicated in their criminal rackets, collecting protection money and acting as paymaster to the other members of the firm. But then the Kray's made what was to be one of their most dangerous mistakes. They tried to get Donoghue to admit to the killing of Frank Mitchell. Albert, who had become increasingly appalled by the violent turn the Twin's business affairs had been taking, testified against them. His evidence landed the Kray's 30 years. In this book, Albert Donoghue reveals the shocking events he witnessed—it is the inside story of the Krays from a radically different standpoint. It charts the rise of the country's most notorious criminals, and their final descent into self-destruction.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Enforcer-Secrets of my life with the Krays
A very good back-ground work to the underworld in England in the 1960's, with particular reference to the "Firm"-the Kray brothers crime empire which was the dominant force in the London East end gangs of that era.
Recommended to anyone interested in theviolent reality behind the almost mythical status accorded to the Kray's influence in the East End.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second Fiction Anthology for Award-Winning DELTA GREEN
DELTA GREEN is the modern adaptation of Call of Cthulhu.Drawing on the same body of UFO lore and paranormal activity as the X-Files, DELTA GREEN has tapped into something very deep. And of course, once you have a successful RPG, you might as well start the fiction flowing, right?

Dark Theaters has some fairly lenghty short stories, designed to flesh out the world of DELTA GREEN.Some clues and hints are elaborated on; what exactly happened during the fabled raid on Innsmouth in 1928?What was the final mission of Gen. Fairfield? We find out more about the summoning by the Karotechia that was a dress rehearsal for the end of the world, but the entirety of the episode remains tantalizingly removed.

Dark Theaters, like the rest of DELTA GREEN fiction, is about what it means to be human. Or not human. The monstrosities which are called up and cannot easily be put away serve to highlight our humanity. But in the end, humanity is just short-hand for a fundamental incomprehension of the universe. We are carrying on a rear-guard action against reality, buying our fellow-man time for ... what?To say that humanity loses in the end is to pretend that there are other players, rules agreed upon, some validity to having tried and lost.Life is a game of solitaire, and we're not playing with a full deck. All is meaninglessness, a blowing of the wind.

And yet humanity means staying in the game.Like Lucifer, the real patron saint of lost causes, we know that we will lose and darnit, we are going to keep playing the hand we were dealt. It gives meaning to life, death, and the passing of the seasons, the sacrifices we have made and those we have sacrificed, to play by the rules, even if there aren't any.So let us cheer for the hero and jeer for the villain, and not go gently into that dark night.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some true brilliance in a few tales
This anthology of Delta Green short stories presents a good introduction to the conspiracy/horror concepts of the DG world. Some stories are better than others, and each tale has it's own merits, but the story by Arinn Dembo stands head and shoulders above the rest. The story, a DG-flavored explanation of the life and times of a rockstar who closely resembles Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain, is truly fantastic in my opinion. I'm probably a bigger fan of the story because of the unsolved mystery of Cobain's death, but it's well-written and sucks you in with a mixture of present-time and flashback sequences. I recommend the book as both an introduction to DG, and as a source of fresh new historical fiction authors. ... Read more
