Excerpt: The Phoolka family had descended from the celebrated Phool, their eponym, from whom descended the rulers of Patiala , Jind , Nabha as well as the Chiefs of Bhadaur, Malaudh and Badrukhan and the Sardars of Juindan, Laudhgarh, Dyalpura, Rampura and Kot Duna. The early progenitors of the Phoolka House were scions of the Princely Rajput family of Jaisulmer who left their desert homes around the time of Rai Pithora and established themselves around the country of Hisar, Sirsa and Bhatner. Maharaja Ala Singh of Patiala descended from Phool and to his genius must be ascribed the remarkable and rapid rise of the family in the first stages of its history. The Phoolka Sardars trace their genealogy from the Raja of Jaisalmer Rawal Jaisal , Yadu Bhatti Rajput of Chandra Vanshi clan and descendants of Lord Krishna, Avatar of Lord Vishnu. Phool, a Sidhu Brar was the founder of this family. Phool's eldest son Tiloka was the ancestor of the Nabha, Jind and Badrukhan royal families and his second son Rama sired six sons and out of Dunna, Ala Singh and Bakhta sprang the princely states of Bhadaur, Patiala and Malaudh which were the most important of the Cis-Satluj States belonging to Phoolkian Misl. Collaterally, the descendants of Phool were connected with the rulers of Faridkot ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16792585 ... Read more

Product Description
The book outlines the Sisyphean task Akalis faced trying redeeming to no avail Pandit Nehru's pre-independence promise allowing Sikhs to enjoy a glow of freedom in the north of an independent India. It delves into the anatomy of the Akalis' titanic struggle with Mrs. Gandhi for conceding basic demands set out in the Anandpur Sahib Resolutions to the Sikhs that was to culminate in an ill-conceived and ruthless attack in June 1984 on the Golden Temple; and, which set in motion a train of incalculable calamitous events. The author surveys the aftermath of the showdown when in a brief defining moment Sikhs coalesced into a rarely occurring united front (a qaum) and how that shining instant wasted away with the changing contours of political landscape, Sikh identity, didactic approach and doctrinal ambiguities.Post-1984 some flawed notions of Sikh religion have gained currency and by way of illustration the author points out Nobel Laureate Naipaul s misconstruction of Sikh history and religion in the book India: A Million Mutinies Now and Gurpreet KaurBhatti s attack on Sikh iconography in her controversial play Behzti (dishonour). He also examines the predicament of the Sikhs of diaspora who face the twin risks of ensuring their right to wear turban in the workplace and avoiding cross-cultural influences likely to hybridize their religious traditions. ... Product Description
The work embodies development and systematicoptimization of oral controlled release (CR)mucoadhesive hydrophilic matrices of atenololusing "Design of Experiments". A central compositedesign was used to optimize drug release profileand bioadhesive strength. Two polymers, namely,Carbopol 934P and sodium CMC, were taken assynergistic factors. The 3-D response surfaces and2-D contour plots indicated significant effect ofboth the polymers on ex vivo bioadhesive strengthof tablet against porcine gastric mucosa, diffusional release exponent and drug releaseextension. The optimized drug delivery formulationwas selected by feasibility and grid searches basedon maximization of the response variables.Validation of drug delivery optimization studyusing experimental runs indicated high prognosticability of the chosen experimental design. Besidesunraveling the effect of the two factors on variousresponse variables, the study helped in findingthe "optimized" formulation with excellentbioadhesive strength and extended release for 24 h,holding immense promise for once-a-daygastroretentive CR formulation and minimizingfluctuations in plasma drug levels. ... Product Description
THE NOMDAS (Past and present)

The thunder of their hoofs was heard for miles away sending people scampering for cover and safety. First to tame and mount the horse, these marauding nomads ruled the steppe for five hundred years. History calls them the Scythians.

Around 300 BC, these noble warriors were displaced from their homeland by their nomadic cousins. Some made their way to the Indus Valley, the heart of what came to be known as Punjab.

Two millennium later some of their descendants are on the move again, primarily because of economic and political pressures. These are the Sikhs who have migrated and joined the mainstream in western countries and have distinguished themselves as entrepreneurs, politicians, professors, artists, writers, doctors and engineers.

THE MAVERICKS (old and new)

Jats, the progeny of the Scythians flourished in Punjab. They excelled in farming and animal husbandry. Matchless as soldiers, they are unafraid to take arms to fight for their rights and those of fellow beings. Many converted to Islam, some embraced the Sikh faith, while others were assimilated into Hinduism.

But, they remained nomadic at heart: fiercely independent. Their rugged individualism often sets them at odds with one another, splitting them into factions. Some are adrift in a sea of socio-religious confusion. Turned fundamentalist, they promote infighting, while others behave like Caeser. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Long-term Nomadism in Sikh Culture
In this interesting essay Bhupinder Singh Mahal attempts to trace Punjabicultural characteristics back to the Scythians, focusing particularly onthe independent nomadic spirit that still infuses the Punjabi (especiallyPunjabi Sikh) diaspora. It is quite a readable book, and the author'screation of a resonance from ancient to modern times rings true for anybodywith a sense of the Punjabi character. There are fascinating asides andplausible if speculative linkages among various old and new traditions, thecharacteristic turban-wearing amongthem.

However, this book suffersfrom the same problems that plague much South Asian academic writing - lackof citations. There are informal references to all manner of writings, butno detailed citations that one could check, and little attempt torigorously evaluate sources for their reliability which unfortunately makesthe treatise less than scholarly.

This author's experience in Canadaadds something to his understanding of Punjabis and the issues they face. He is able, for example, to draw on Canadian stereotypes about the peopleof Newfoundland ("Newfies") to comment on subcontinental humorabout Sikhs. He grasps more than most Sikh authors in Punjab the trulyglobal character of the community today, and therefore is well placed toexpound on his theme of long-term nomadism in the culture. The diasporanSouth Asians are not best viewedas "ex-pats" at a distance fromtheir homelands; rather, the diaspora is itself part of the South Asiancultural heartland.(Certainly we have seen this in the Khalistanmovement, for example.)On this key point, the author has an importantinsight to offer.Trying to track the motif of travel back into history isan innovative, if by nature speculative, endeavor.Bhupinder Singh Mahalis to be commended for the attempt. ...
