Very, very thorough.
This book is an extremely insightful and thorough look into the formation of some of the world's major religions. It can be a bit tedious in some places, so I read it over the space of a few months. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an open and inquisitive mind.

A very strong well done book on history of religion
You may not be able to find this book since it is out of print.That is a shame because I know of no other that is so sweeping and accurate on the subject. Smith covers the subject of man's quest for understanding nature and his inventions of the supernatural in a clear and thorough way.I do not think I can do justice hereto the number of topics treated in this book.Smith understands and explains philosophy, biology, geology, archaeology, and the history of science and scientific method, just to mention a few. Being thorough has drawbacks as well as benefits.The book is 444 pages long and Smith had a bit of a problem finding a publisher that thought it was not too long.I must admit that I got bogged down half way through and after that perused only chapters and subjects of my choice.Starting with the first evidence of developing civilization the book details how tribes started cultures rich in myth and ceremony. The book shows where and how the Jewish religion developed, and what the sources of the Bible probably were.Religions and its history as it relates to civilization in general is comprehensive.The theme of natural science vs. religion as a means of understanding nature is well treated.It was first published in 1952 so there are now more available data on at least some of the hard science, but I would guess that for the most part the historical information is still accurate and certainly the philosophy is still valuable, interesting and well reasoned.

Terrible reader unfriendliness
In summary, the book uses unnessarily confusing style, seemingly assumes the reader knows the subject already and does not provide computation formula or details to solve the problems behind the chapters.
"Eater of books" has suggested others to buy buy "Income Tax Fundamentals" by Whittenburg and Altus-Buller instead.

I had a terrible experience with this book.
The author does not use plain English or reader-friendly style to explain the subject. I often found that author's long sentences unnessarily caused confusion and awkwardness. The book gave me an impression that the author favors long sentence just for the sake of it without consideration of unnessary confusion and awkwardness readers will experience. The explanation in this book was as if the author is expecting readers know the subject already. Sometime the book describes the material in detail while other times not without explaning what kinds of details matter and do not matter. I highly doubt that there is an editor who make sure the book is reader friendly.

Besides the reader-unfriendliness of this book, I found that the questions behind the book ask things not covered in the book. When the questions were covered in the book, they were still most of the time very difficult to answer because of the lack of explanations in the chapters to deal with the details. As I mentioned above, the book seldom explains what types of details matter and do not matter. On top of that, the details mentioned in the book often time have arbitrary link between each other because of the nature of the law. Thus while I was solving problems I found myself guessing a lot, helplessly striving to find meaningful link or pattern that might help me to "guess" right. Instead of reviewing the things covered to make sure I understand them correctly, it seems the questions were designed to make readers learn new things with time-consuming extra research not to mention whether one will find one ever. I remember I had more questions in my head after "solving" the problems with a lot of meaningless guessing than before "solving" them. Instructors should not expect students to solve the questions without an access to the answer manual.

It is a common sense that people buy a course book, instead of doing self-research, to learn new things in an organized way and more time efficient way. I question this book if it has achieved any one of these.

This books is a disservice to those trying to learn federal income tax. This is a book on tax law, not on how to prepare individual tax returns or to prepare for the CPA exam. In short, save your money and buy "Income Tax Fundamentals" by Whittenburg and Altus-Buller. For comparison, when discussing medical expense deductions, this book splits the dicussion into two chapters seven chapters apart and never states the formula. Income Tax Fundamentals has as the last sentence of the first paragraph "here's the formula to calculate".

Also in the South-Western book you will never see a 1040 or any of the supporting schedules because it is about tax LAW. In the Whittenburg book EVERY chapter shows you the forms and explains how to fill them out in detail and how to calculate the amounts because it is a tax ACCOUNTING textbook.

Here's brief list of issues I had with this book
- It is completely lacking in clarity because it never walks thr reader through how to do the tasks, it provides an illustrative situation, states the amount of tax owed and moves on. There is no step-by-step as to how the answer was derived or how you could do it yourself. This leaves you blindly mixing and matching numbers to try to figure out how to reproduce the result.
- the text frequently makes assertions in the examples that are not supported by the text leading to the example (in some cases, the example can be explained by information several pages later -- where the example SHOULD have occured
- it will provide lists of exceptions or rules, but then not explain what they mean. For instance when discussing Hobby Losses, the book states 9 rules to determine whether an activity is a hobby or a business, but doesn't inform the reader which would apply: "The expertise of the taxpayer" would that make it a hobby or a business? The book doesn't say. "The expectation that the assets will increase in value" Again, does that make it a hobby or a business?
- When discussing the restrictions on deductions for transactions between related parties, it covers Losses, Unpaid Expenses and Interest and THEN at the end defines what "related parties" means!
- It does next to nothing to inform the student HOW to do much of anything; it simply states what the rules are and moves on
- frequently it uses BUSINESS examples throughout the text instead of individual examples (this has lead to extreme confusion in the class over a test question where students, who had taken taxation of corporations, got the question wrong). Although many individual filers have private businesses, the book provides as an example whether "Blackbird Airlines" a non-private company can deduct the cost of its federally mandated engine tests!

It goes on like this for 800+ pages. It's unconscionable!

If this text is required in your class, write up a formal complaint to your school (I am documenting the flaws I have found and including page numbers), and during the class review share your thoughts on the text.

This book is a waste of time and trees!

This is yet another book from Hoffman and South Western publishing on tax LAW, not tax ACCOUNTING. This book is good for advanced coverage of corporate tax accounting, its use as an introduction to corporate tax accounting is a crime. It never tells you how to prepare a tax return, you never are asked to fill out any forms, it never instructs you how to calculate the taxes or provide walkthrough examples of the same.

This is not a taxation of corporations and partnerships 101 book, which is what a lot of colleges seem to be using it for, this is a book on corporate tax LAW for people who already know how to calculate the taxes and fill out the forms (what I need to know and paid to learn). This is 301 material "Advanced corporate tax accounting theory".

Here's a "problem" assigned to me from the book. "locate the following tax services in your library and indicate the name of the publisher and whether the service is organized by topic or by Code Section". No, I will not waste my time this way. This teaches me nothing about how to calculate the taxes and fill out the forms.

When you do get to problems that ask you to calculate the taxes you'll be dumbfounded since there is no place in the book that walks you through how to actually do it. Rather you have to surmise how it might be done from examples. So instead of building your skills, you spend most of your time mixing and matching numbers to try to find out how they were combined in the example to arrive at the answer and then applying that haphazard approach to your homework.

I had to buy this text book for a college taxation class. Initially I thought this book was ok. But, then I tried actually reading it and realized this book wasn't written with too much care in terms of presenting information in a logical sequence or in an understandable way.

I often would have to go to websites to get the kind of understandable explanation that this book should have given. Its written in a really choppy style and often is too vague or general without fully explaning things.

This book needs some serious editing for readability, but then again text book companies don't generally care about making the content easily digestable. Teh just want to make sure the author has a Phd.

This book was great, if you like reading books the seem to have been written by robots.

I would definitely not buy this book unless it is required for a class. If you just want to understand the US tax code and how to file your taxes definitely look elsewhere. IRS publications are way more helpful and also are free.

Just terrible...
I was going to spend 10 minutes of my life complaining about every aspect of this book. Fortunately, "Eater of Books" jumped on that grenade, so here's my 5-second version: read Eater's review. Everything is spot on (I can't verify the Whittenburg comment...haven't purchased that book).

I tend to love textbooks, having read ~40-50 between college & independent study. This might be the single worst...so bad that rather than put a helpful comment rating on Eater's comment, I decided to throw up another 1-star on my own.

I did not receive the book. After waiting for three weeks, I contacted the seller, asking for the tracking number for the shipment. I did not get the response. After latest date to receive the book passed, I contacted Amazon and asked for return.

very intensive but easy to comprehend
This book will amaze and sometimes confuse you. It will confuse you and explain why its confusing. After reading the book and going over exercises, I can explain and argue topics on the subject. Highly recommend dont buying from anybook because you wont get your book on time.

Fantastic!

good dictionary
This dictionary was recommended for a class, which is why I got it. After working with it some, I can see why it was recommended- it combines portability with as much information as can be crammed into a book you can carry along with other necessary books.

Excellent Value Reading &Translation Dictionary
This dictionary is Latin to English only. It is tremendous vaue for money and formidable competition for even fairly large dictionaries. Even though I own the Oxford Latin Dictionary (O.L.D.), a huge tome, I use my Chambers Murray most of the time and rarely need to consult the weighty Oxford volume. This dictionary is so good it suffices for many of the needs of a serious scholar of Latin, although of course such a scholar will also need access to the O.L.D. or Lewis and Short. There are plenty of definitions under each heading, and I have not found the frustration of many other dictionaries of this (apparent) size of having to move to a larger dictionary because I could not locate an entry for the word in question.

My only gripe would be that it does not clearly distinguish between third declension nouns (genitive plural in -um) and third declension -i stem nouns (genitive plural in -ium). But this is a common failing and will not affect one's ability to use the dictionary for translation.

The Most Latin Lexical Bang for the Buck
This is hands down the best (and most useful) Latin dictionary on the market. Since it gives only Latin to English, it is more extensive than one would guess from its size alone. In an age when our Latin classes no longer emphasize composition in Latin, but focus exclusively on translation from Latin into English, this is a first-rate and essential reference tool. No student should need such a dictionary at the beginning of Latin study, but this should be recommended to all good high school Latin II and second semester college Latin students.
Each entry contains a good definition or definitions of the Latin word followed by representative Latin quotations (a feature not typical of other dictionaries). In addition, the compilers usually indicate the family of Latin words to which a given word belongs. This etymological feature allows one to disagree with the definitions of the compilers and to formulate one's own definitions.
In addition, the cost is so reasonable that it should be accessible to all students who desire to use it.
I would go so far as to say that for all but the most arcane Latin scholars, this is every bit as good as the monumental Lewis and Short lexicon.
Finally, if the students need some kind of English to Latin dictionary, they can buy the least expensive other Latin-English/English-Latin dictionary available, preferably used, and rip out its Latin to English section.
This is indubitably the dictionary of choice for any serious Latin student.

This is worth the money!
I put off buying this dictionary for a long time because from its picture, it looks rather diminutive.However, it approaches the size of Lewis and Short having a thousand pages and a similar heft.It has very detailed definitions for each entry with the different usages clearly laid out--including idioms.It is typeset similar to the way Lewis and Short is, however it is much more readable and looks less crammed.The reproduction is beautiful--it is very clear and crisp, not blurry at all like some facsimile texts look.The paper has a smooth, slightly glossy finish with good opacity.Of course, you are limited to words that existed in English in 1871, but this is by far the only easily available English-Latin dictionary that provides real depth and examples of usage.I highly recommend it--even if you never plan to engage in Latin Prose Composition, it is invaluable for research into how nuance would be expressed in Latin.Let's hope there's another hardcover printing one day too.

The best English-Latin dictionary in print
I've wasted a fair amount of money on other English-to-Latin dictionaries, now I can get rd of them. I risked [$$] on buying this sight unseen from Amazon, and and was well rewarded. This is a reprint of a 19th century classic. It is a large tome, clearly printed, and is not shy of neo-latin like some of our more modern references are. Answers questions most can't answer- an unique approach
All companies have a competitive advantage, few do a good job of defining their true advantages and using them to grow their businesses. This book gives you usable ways to find and take advantage of your business' true strengths.This is a must read for those who are leaders inbusinesses.

The insight I needed in order to differentiate my business
As an entrepreneur I am constantly seeking knowledge in order to improve my business, resulting in customer retention and sales. Creating Competitive Advantage by Jaynie L. Smith definitely opened my eyes on how to differentiate my business without relying on price as the only differentiator. Nowadays most businesses (at least from what I see) use the cost of their goods or services as the only selling point they have when marketing their products. But what they don't know is that relying purely on cost is not going to make your business a success in the long run - at least that is what Creating Competitive Advantage sets out to teach you. And you cannot compare your business to the Wal-Marts of the world. They built that empire on cost as the advantage, and probably the only company in history that will last by doing so (or so we think). If you think you can catch up to what Wal-Mart achieved, then you need to wake up from your daydream and smell the roses - it is not going to happen.

So if we will never become the Wal-Marts of the world, then how do we compete with them? Well first, stop focusing on cost as your advantage. In order to compete with your competitors you must come up with competitive advantages that NO OTHER company possesses. Creating Competitive Advantage helps define what these competitive advantages are, and gives you insight on how to develop your own advantages that will set you apart from the rest. This small, to-the-point book definitely gave me the tools I needed to begin brainstorming on how to set my business apart from my competitors - especially those that already have established pretty dang good competitive advantages themselves.

Definitely a must read if you want that extra push to help your business grow, ESPECIALLY during these times. Why do you think a lot of small to medium size businesses have gone out of business? Well my only guess is that they didn't do a good job differentiating themselves on why you should keep coming back to them.

Why do your customers buy from you?
Competitive Advantage - it is the stuff of every business owner's dreams. The problem is that Competitive Advantage is a moving target. Ms. Smith rightfully makes clear that there is a never ending need to evaluate and re-invent competitive advantage.

Smith's book is on point with her advice on how to put creating competitive advantage to work in your organization. At the end of each chapter is a summary of the major points and reminders of the lessons learned from the case studies.

Smith uses ample and interesting case studies to make her points. However, what would normally be a strength turns into a weakness as Smith repeatedly pounds home that these are "her clients." Unfortunately, I've seen this same problem with speakers. Often, in an attempt to build credibility, speakers will talk about "my client will . . . ," or "I have a client who . . . " or "one of my clients . . . " The difficulty is, this becomes a hard sell instead of simply building credibility. Smith's book suffers from this difficulty. What could have been an excellent work, and very timely for the present economic conditions, is diminished by what comes across as self-promotion.

One piece of advice Smith gives is "So brag a little." I'm uncomfortable with that advice. I understand that companies need to make sure the customer base knows of the advantages of dealing with them. However, especially in this market, I'm finding a real push back on a hard sell. So if you can brag a little without it being perceived as a hard sell, then perhaps that will work for you. In Smith's case, the perception of this reader is that she went much too far in "bragging a little."

Having said all that, I still recommend that you read this book and pull out the many good points Smith makes. You may have to work to get by some of the self-promotion, but there is a still enough solid advice to make Smith's book worthwhile.

Identifying Your Competitive Advantages
This is what I did before buying the book...

I called each of my offices and asked them 'What do we do better than our competitors?'. The results were quite mixed with the main thing being we take care of our customers and know them. The worst response was there are no differences. I wrote down some of my own ideas and found it difficult. We as managers get so wrapped in doing business that we loose sight of our own advantages.

I read this book from cover to cover in less than a week and was able to write down no less than 25 competive advantages! I highly recommend this book and also recommend to do with a notepad beside you as ideas will pop in your mind very unexpectedly.

Prescription for Improving Your Advertising
If you are as tired as I am of being bombarded with advertisements and marketing that all say the same thing, and in the process, really says nothing, then this book is a revelation.Just as bad is dealing with sales reps who all say the same thing.As a consumer (personal and business), I'm constantly looking for ways in which a product/service can be distinguished.I want to buy on value because with few exceptions, I don't trust anything or anyone who is the low cost provider.

Poor reprinting of an excellent resource
I agree with the previous reviewer - Smith & Hall is an excellent resource, but Wimbledon's reprint of it has some embarrassing mistakes. Not only are several pages (54, 57, 59, 182, 202, 419, 825) missing and replaced with copies of other pages, and pages 774 and 775 are reversed, but the cover was bound upside down on my edition. However, the cover is a minor error, and the missing pages can be viewed at http://www.grexlat.com/biblio/smith/index.htm, so it's not a total loss. I'm only deducting one star for the printing problems.

Classic Dictionary, Careless Publishing
This dictionary is a wonderful resource for the composition of Latin prose. Dr. Smith has, indeed, been very full in his definitions, and shades of meaning are distinguished very well, easily steering the user away from careless mistakes that might occur with smaller dictionaries. I have no criticism for Dr. Smith's dictionary.

Wimbledon Publishers have not given Smith his due in this edition, though, and I must recommend against their edition. I have neither seen nor used the Bolchazy edition, but it should be preferred to this one, because Wimbledon has been careless in the preparation of theirs. In using the book only briefly, I have come across two duplicated pages, i.e., page 202 is a duplicate of page 203 (and so the real page 202 is omitted entirely), likewise with pages 182 and 183. I have not yet combed the book for similar repetitions, but one word omitted on page 202 was DESTROY, a loss which any student of Latin composition (or literature) will recognize as a significant hole in the Latin language.Moreover, in several attempts to find redress, I have not yet received any response from the press.

I would suggest this dictionary to any scrupulous student of Latin composition who wishes to avoid the pitfalls and oversimplifications of a Cassell's (or the like), but likewise the unavoidably mannered vocabulary of Bradley's Arnold. ... Read more
