5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent holistic view of wellness
I picked up this book intending to only scan the sections that were relevant to my current interest in educating myself about hormone replacement, but I found myself reading it from front to back!So much of the information in this book concurs with other sources that we have read including Eat Right For Your Blood Type, Patrick Holford's Optimum Nutrition book, Dr. Andrew Weil's lectures. There does need to be more focus in medicine and training doctors in preventative medicine and nutritional healing.Just because the FDA approves something or a drug or product is deemed "safe" for the general public doesn't mean in any way that it actually is.A couple of things missing from the book are spiritual and mind wellness like doing hobbies, friendships, yoga, meditation, but so many interesting points are raised about the increased chemicals in processed foods, how pharmaceuticals are harmful and all intertwined with physicians, etc.I believe that some of the solutions in this book are very expensive, but we need to focus on the things that each of us individuals CAN do to prevent disease ahead of time.Great book, would read again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
After I finished her book on cancer,Knockout,I decided to read the one she wrote before . This one might have a subtitle, "practicing endocrinology on a different level." But most people don't know what endocrinology is, so that title wouldn't sell many books.

In a nutshell, the physicians (and others) interviewed are interested in keeping us healthy, so that we will live well until we die. This is a noble objective. Though there are lots of topics dealt with in the book, the theme deals with hormones, which are necessary to keep us alive. Think of a hormone as the spark in the sparkplug: it stimulates something, which causes a response. As we age, for whatever reason, our hormone levels go down, so the question then arises, what happens to us physically? Lots of things: our minds deteriorate, we gain weight, our skin wrinkles, we become forgetful, we have little or no drive or momentum, etc. With this in mind, is there anything we can do to supplement our diets, etc., so as to maintain a proper level of hormones? Answers to these questions are given in this book.

Since I have type 2 diabetes (courtesy of Agent Orange, Vietnam), I am well aware of what the hormone insulin does: it stimulates my system so that sugar in my blood is used to produce energy, or it is forced into my muscles for storage, it becomes fat and I gain weight, or it continues to float in my blood. If there is too much in my blood, I could go blind, have severe pain in my feet (neuropathy), have heart attacks because my blood vessels are weakened by the glucose, gain weight, and so forth. So I have to pay attention to what insulin is doing in my body. Should my pancreas not produce beta cells (which turn into insulin), I will have to take insulin shots to maintain a proper level of glucose in my blood.

From this, we learn that hormones stimulate reactions. All hormones work in a similar fashion: if your levels of estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, are depleted, or out of balance, you will develop conditions in your body which are unwanted: your mental sharpness will not be there, you will be forgetful, you will not have energy, your sexual drive will leave, your vaginal areas will dry up, etc. etc. etc.

So where do we go to remedy this condition, other than locate an endocrinologist? The answers are in this book, but let me give you the bottom line: you must locate a doctor who specializes in "anti aging". Doctors who specialize in this arena will test your blood, and based on the results, will send you to compounding pharmacies, who will mix creams, gels, capsules, and so forth, which you will use on an experimental basis. Unfortunately, no "one size fits all" with the pharmacist or the physician. Over time, as your blood is re-tested, the pharmacist and physician will stumble on to the right dosages for you. When that happens, your hormones will be balanced, and you will feel like a new person.

There are conditions, however, to this regimen: you must eat right, and you must exercise. Which leads us back to the Mediterranean diet urged in the Anti Cancer book, mentioned below. In other words, you will not be given a magic pill, which changes your symptoms, but doesn't cure the underlying cause (this is the traditional Western medical practice).

This book is one of the most interesting reads I've had in a long time. Again, it is available in your library. However, this is one piece of writing you will want on your book shelf, for future reference.

And now the footnote about the Anti Cancer book (stop reading at this point if you aren't interested in the best book on cancer that I've read). Here's the skinny on the Anti Cancer book:

Anti Cancer: A New Way of Life
David Servan-Schreiber, MD PhD
Penguin Books

I normally do not finish reading a book in four days; this one was too good, and I kept reading. The book is about what we can do to fight cancer. Though the author doesn't touch on technologies dealing with pH balance, the effect of oxygen in diets, relationships with God, and some other matters which are probably important, Dr. David Servan-Schreiber ("DSS") echoes many works of others, but presents the material from slightly different perspective, all of which is positive and encouraging.

If you read any of the Amazon blogs or other book reviews about this author, his story is fairly well known. This French born psychiatrist practiced medicine in Pittsburg, and during one of his research projects when he volunteered to have an MRI, he discovered that he had brain cancer. The walnut sized tumor was removed, he recovered and returned to his frantic medical practice.More than five years after remission, and through a series ofunique circumstances, he discovered the cancer had returned (he even gives a scientific explanation as to why cancers return after surgery, radiation and chemotherapy).

Though he underwent thirteen months of chemotherapy, and some radiation, he began to pay attention to advice nutritionists had been badgering him about for many years: change what you are eating. He has done so, and is now 18 years in remission.

We've heard all of this advice from others, but when you have cancer, you understand why efforts are made to keep our environment clean. Our environment, full of toxins and carcinogens, feed unwanted substances into what we eat, whether it is animal or vegetable or water.Though our immune systems are normally strong enough to withstand the attack, toxins can throw us out of balance, and we find we must fight unwanted diseases, because toxins have overloaded our immune systems.

Nutritionists tell us if we change our eating habits, we will limit our exposure to toxins, and our immune systems will do what they are designed to do, which is, guard us from the disastrous effects of these toxins. But our part in the equation doesn't end at the dinner table. We need to change how we live, by exercise and by changing certain attitudes.

One of the more significant observations he makes deals with the increase in cancer rates in western, civilized countries, since 1940.Although there are reasons for this trend, the bottom line is this: our natural immune systems cannot handle the onslaughts of these toxins and carcinogens, which have become part of what we eat and drink.DSS was skeptical about this notion for at least six years after the tumor was initially discovered, and since he did not believe in God, he had no source of security to cope with these emotional problems.Over the course of time, he learned that one of the staffers at the University of Pittsburg (where DSS worked) was discovering that certain foods actually help fight cancer. This seminal book came at a critical time for DSS, and in the Anti Cancer book, DSS spends a great deal of time in explaining why green tea, turmeric, and other foods actually kill cancer cells.

Though diet is important, he also stresses the benefits of exercise. One case in particular was very interesting, which dealt with a lady undergoing chemotherapy. She was advised to engage in martial arts.Though this may seem impossible, since most patients sleep for days after concluding a chemo session, she struggled though that program, and continued in martial arts many years thereafter. The exercise actually helped her recovery. Though DSS doesn't really explain the benefits of exercise, other than giving the results, I have learned from other readings that oxygen (which is produced in abundance in aerobic exercise) kills cancer cells; aerobic exercise delivers the oxygen needed to accomplish that task.

In addition to diet and exercise, he also goes into the psychological issues of the patient. If the patient has an attitude of helplessness, or from a Christian perspective, is a person without hope, that person's recovery will be severally impaired.DSS has adopted meditation, which he believes helps him tremendously. As a psychiatrist, who practices psychology as a subset of his practice, he is well aware of the emotional benefits of meditation.

DSS regards bleached flour and sugar as feeders of cancer, and cites lots of evidence to support his conclusion. In addition, he wants us to consume more Omega 3's and less Omega 6's.The Omega 6 diet inflames cells, coagulates blood, and simulates cell growth ( such as cancer cell growth).Omega 3's produce the exact opposite effect. Finally, he wants us to detoxify our own surroundings (quit smoking, use deodorants that contain no aluminum, watch our exposure to herbicides and pesticides, and so forth).

Though it's impossible to give an adequate yet short review of the book, here's the gist of what he's recommending: since we are all exposed to toxins and carcinogens, let's do our part to stay healthy. Watch what we eat (as he puts it, watch our terrain), don't become a couch potato (exercise 30 minutes a day; daily walks work wonders), and avoid stress (don't over commit). This book is written by a medical doctor, who happens to have a PhD, and who is also a scholar (that are over 30 pages of footnotes in the book, chock full of citations). Please don't ignore what he is saying.

A second footnote on cancer books: consider reading Suzanne Somer's book on physicians who cure cancer, Knockout.Stop reading this review if this topic isn't of interestto you, but again, as a second resource on cancer books, here are my thoughts about this one:

Suzanne Somers
Crown Publishers

I am a skeptic in many respects, based on years of observing human behavior, and living through a myriad of experiences. In this particular case, my attitude towards the author (and thus, this book) was shaped by her TV show and her outward appearance: how could someone with this "past" and "present" possibly be sharp enough to write a book about cancer? With this bias, I nonetheless read it after a client told about her husband (also a client) who had been cured by one of the doctor interviews in the book. She went on to say, they would not have sought out this doctor, if they had not read about him in this book. This incident piqued my interest, so I read the book.

I am still eating humble pie, because Miss Somers has collected a wealth of material, all of which dovetailed with what I read in the Anti Cancer book, reviewed above.

Though the medical approaches are dissimilar, the cancer patients (by and large) have been cured without radiation and chemotherapy. All physicians interviewed (and there are a lot of them; they practice in their home towns, all over the United States) decided not to follow the herd, so to speak, but rather, wanted to find out what really fixed their sick patients. The results are statistically speaking, "off the charts", but the bottom line is, the patients (perhaps a majority of them) were cured by the treatments fashioned by these creative medical doctors.

The medical community has not accepted their approaches to healing, nor have the FDA or drug companies. This is unfortunate, and almost criminal from a patient's perspective. However, none of this negative bias has dissuaded this group of "alternative medicine" doctors from forging ahead, as they try to cure their patients.

I could include excerpts from the book, as part of this review, but have decided not to. Instead, I urge you to read this book, and make your own decisions. The interviews are worth the price of the book, should you buy it, but if you are like me, begin with a borrowed copy or a library copy.

After you read this, I don't think you will regret being exposed to a branch of medicine that wants to find some other method of treating cancer (whether it be brain, breast, ovarian, lung, etc.).

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read!
With the information in this book, I have been able to get my mother off of long-term antibiotic use from chronic UTIs. There is so much valuable information in this book that now I can't imagine not knowing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Way of Life
This is an amazing book. I am about to embark on a new, healthy way of living. Anyone who wants to feel good, look good and have an abundance of energy needs to read this. Thanks Suzanne!

5-0 out of 5 stars As Suzanne says, "knowledge is power"
When I began to read "Breakthrough" my head was spinning. There is so much valuable information here and I wanted to soak it all up. Suzanne has interviewed 17 medical professionals who are at the cutting-edge of long-term anti-aging medicine. The book has 450 pages of life-altering secrets and it is packed into small print. If you want to live the rest of your life in vibrant optimum health - then this book is a must-read.

To quote Suzanne `Knowledge is power'. To anyone (and really everyone) who would like to enhance their health knowledge, then this book will certainly fill in many gaps. We can all be responsible for our own true health once we become armed with knowledge.

For me I had never heard of new technologies such as nanotechnology, stem cells and energy medicine. I did not understand the significance of bioidentical hormone therapy (I do agree with other reviewers, BIHT is an expensive option). I now have a deeper understanding as to why nutritional supplements are so vital for our well-being. The people who are at the cutting-edge of this new technology are passionate about what they are achieving. I would love to see all these technologies become mainstream and replace the 'first defense" pharmaceutical drugs.

I strongly suggest that you get your own copy of Suzanne's book and read it with an open-mind. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical advice for those with cancer or cancer survivors.
I was diagnosed with Grade 1 (fastest growing) Stage 2-3 breast cancer this past May 2010. DCIS and IDC, estrogen and progesterone positive, with lymphovascularized tumor. Even though I had leanings towards alternative medicine, I got scared into a biopsy, mastectomy, and chemotherapy. Well, I almost lost my life from chemotherapy. My colon bled and I was hospitalized for 5 days. Afterwards, I had violent diarrhea for 2 months straight... not kidding. I thought I was going to die. I also was so toxic, I got every side effect from every medicine that I took: sleepwalking, panick attacks, etc... Not fun! On top of that, I suspect that a mammogram caused the cancer as there is no cancer in my family!

My roommate who is a nurse introduced me to this book and I wish I had read it before all the stuff happened to me. It warned against the treatments that I had and predicted the very events that happened to me!!! I have incorporated much advice from this book and now my menstrual periods are normal. I am grateful that Suzanne Somers stuck her neck out and went against conventional medicine. Conventional medicine almost killed me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knockout
This is an amazing book! I plan to buy several more copies for gifts. Everyone should read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but incomplete picture: alternative methods are costly
I caught a glimpse of this book in Borders and got a copy.First let me say that I do believe that cancer treatment is big business and there is no doubt that the self-interest of large corporations sometimes will trump the interest of individual patients. The book presents several other perspectives from doctors who have the luxury of selecting patients that are thought to be "fit" for their particular treatments.I have no doubt that some of these treatment worked for some patients, and that it is a blessing that they exist in these cases. However, I don't feel that the complete picture is represented here.

For example, I was interested in learning more about how much these alternative treatments cost. One clinic in Texas (mentioned in the book) provides the following information:

Before seeing the doctors: $500 for initial review of all medical records

At consultation: $1,000 for consultation, $4,000 for lab work

After consultation and treatment is determined: $10,000 deposit before basic treatment; "Additional deposits for prescribed medications will be required due to the FDA just recently approving some of the medications. The cost of these medications can be very costly. Thus we will not know the exact cost for treatment until these medications have been prescribed. (Estimated deposit for medications can range between $5,000.00 - $15,000.00)"

After discharge: monthly deposit for basic treatment will range from $4,500 - $6,000, in addition to medications. From our experience, the treatment regimen may last between 4 to 12 months on average for the majority of our patients.

I don't know if the above cost is typical of either the alternative methods or the "traditional" ones.My impression is that no matter which route you go, cancer patients faces an uphill battle in terms of the cost of treatment. It would be great if some of the cost information of this type were included.

By the way, I also found the opening scene quite unbelievable. It may have happened to her, but like I said, very unbelievable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knockout by Suzanne Somers
This is an extrodinary woman who practices what she preached. Just look at her - then discover her age. 'Nuf said.

The pharmaceutical industry does not want to cure anything. Why? Their billions of dollars in profit would be hurt. Pretty simple to understand.

Suzanne Somers explains healthier ways to fight cancers, with many times more beneficial results.

Doctors today are trained from college to believe in one thing. Drugs are the answer. If we believe this, and this is true, why are so many people still sick, still not cured, still getting zero results taking their medications. Why are so many becoming sicker from taking drugs? Why do they die from taking these life saving drugs?

Because drugs are not always the answer. Because drugs are sometimes the cause.
Until you read a book like this, no one will understand. For those that care more about their health than what some Doctor tells them, read this book. Then - decide for yourself.
There are Doctors out there that do think outside the box. They are the Doctors I am interested in talking with.
I would recommend this book to all individuals interested in better health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't put it down!
I received this book a few days ago and can't put it down!I am a 2 year breast cancer survivor and my husband is currently battling pancreatic cancer.I've been on the hunt for two years for alternative methods to fight cancer. This book is amazing and pumps me up to continue fighting for my life and my husbands. It puts so much information right into your hands!I totally believe that we have to take a different approach at preventing and treating cancer. So many meds have come out but not much progress has been made to slow cancer down. This book will give you so much valuable information!! Highly suggested!!Thankyou to Suzanne and all the people who continue to uncover the truths about what is really needed to fight the beast! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars what all womenshould read
it is just excellent!I will give it to my daughter and I hope she read it even being 30 years. I wish I couldhave known this valuable information before, but of course I am very happyI know it now (never is too late). It already has helped me a lot.
Thanks to Suzanne Somers!
I wish that her books could weak upthe medicine schools.
The information is clear, precise and with very good humor! knowing this information being young, hormones, PMS, therelation with your mood is a must to improve your quality of your life. Deterioration starts early.

4-0 out of 5 stars Be careful of what you eat
Throughout the book there are mentions of how artificial food is poisoning us. Our meat and dairy products are full of synthetic hormones and other chemicals and our fruits and veggies are loaded with pesticides and other chemicals. Did you know that the entire European continent will not import our meat because of the harmful stuff we put in it? Some of our fruits have lost their flavor while in other countries their fruit and veggies enhance more meals because they are tastier and less harmful. The importance of sleep is mentioned in numerous places. Getting to bed between 9 and 10 pm is a must and sleeping in total darkness turns on the much needed melatonin which not only allows us to sleep, but has many antioxidant properties. Melatonin is not available over the counter in Canada...It is a hormone. This was amazing with all of the information and symptoms tied to low hormones. It was an easy read even though there was a lot of information from doctors and information about the effects on your body. The suggestions seemed a little overwhelming at times even though I realize I probably shouldn't eat sugar at all ever for the rest of my life it still seems a little extreme but I can still take what I want from it and be better off.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ageless makes Sense
Book is full of really good information that is backed up by leading experts in the anti-aging community. Makes good sense to me and has made a tremendous change in my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ageless.....
Great product(book was as NEW condition) & service! Would purchase from this site again! Thanks!

1-0 out of 5 stars I got breast cancer taking biodentical hormones!!! Do not buy this book
I read Suzanne Somers' book Ageless in 2006 and couldn't get my hands on biodentical hormones fast enough. I had no genetic history of breast cancer, my mammograms were completely normal that year.

In March 2008, I was diagnosed with estrogen-positive, Stage 3 breast cancer!! I lost both my breasts and went through two years of grueling therapy to battle the disease. Thank God, I am fine now, taking Tamoxifen for life, which actually BLOCKS all estrogen--its proven to increase survival rates significantly.

My doctor told me that taking biodentical hormones actually fed my malignant tumors in my breasts and made them grow faster!

Had I not taken those pills I may still have my real breasts today. Please,, know there are risks to taking biodentical hormones. Don't take them, they could save your breasts, they could save your life. ... Read more

No one knows the self-denial--and the failure rate--of dieting better than Suzanne Somers. The Three's Company and Step-by-Step star struggled with her weight for twenty years. But now, after years of experimentation and consultation with more than one hundred nutritionists and dietitians, Suzanne has developed a weight-loss plan that truly succeeds.

With over a hundred recipes for great-tasting creative and traditional dishes, Eat Great, Lose Weight will help you free yourself from food cravings, get off the diet roller coaster, and learn to love food again. You won't believe how easy it is to look and feel your best!Amazon.com Review
Years ago, Suzanne Somers lost the chance to appear on a hittelevision series because she was "too chunky." That missedopportunity started her on a "diet roller coaster," trying allkinds of diets. Now Somers believes that diets and deprivation do nothelp people lose weight in the long-term. In Eat Great, LoseWeight, she explains the food-combining plan she calls"Somersizing": eliminate "funky foods" such as sugar("my body's greatest enemy") and white flour; eat fruits aloneon an empty stomach; eat proteins and fats with vegetables and withoutcarbohydrates; eat carbohydrates with vegetables and without fat.

Sommers presents 113 recipes that certainly don't resemble atraditional diet and might make a weight-loss expert's hair curl, suchas Crispy Fried Eggplant and Mozzarella Finger Sandwiches, FlourlessCheese Souffle (with butter, eggs, cream cheese, and Gruyèrecheese), and Grilled Pepper Steak with Herb Butter (trim the fat fromthe meat, but add both butter and olive oil). There's no nutritionalbreakdown, so you can't count fat or calories. Somers admits that"many experts will argue that food combining is a myth," butshe says it works for her, and she credits it with trimming her downto 116 pounds, even though she eats "more than ever." ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Lose weight
This book was a shock and yet a chuckle for our diet club. I bought it, thinking it was a regular size book, (guess I didnt read the small print) and when I received it, it was only 2" big, however, I read it and she had some good ideas. The diet club had a chuckle but still enjoyed the suggestions she recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glad I got it!
I've been wanting this book for a long time because my mom wouldn't let me borrow hers. I was only allowed supervised visitation with it at her house and it's got great recipes in it.
I happen to be gluten intolerant so Suzanne's recipes tend to be nice for me since they are vegetable and protein based.
Also - the theory on insulin intolerance really hits home with me.I lost 10 pounds the first week then tapered of to 1-2 after that. A little advice - don't go overboard on the fat, try to stick with leaner cuts and less oil or it might cause some discomfort.

The book is too small, and it does not have all the information needed to follow the eating plan...very disappointed in the book...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Recipes whether you want to lose weight or not
I was tired of trying to come up with healthy, good meals or eating the same ones all of the time. This book offers easy recipes with few ingredients that are so good. It also has very simple snacks and lunches that you wouldn't think about preparing. Whether you follow her plan or not, the recipes are great.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
I first heard about this book through a friend of mine.We worked together and she started telling me about an eating plan that she had heard about and wanted to try.I, at first, thought it sounded too good to be true and was just another 'celebrity diet scheme'.Boy was I wrong!!After a few weeks, I noticed she was really losing weight and was eating real food!I, on the other hand, was eating bland diet food and seeing very little results.I decided at that point to buy the book and go for it.First off, this is not a diet... you can eat the foods you love, just in a different way.I was still eating my favorite foods, but just in a different combination. That's all it took!It only took me 9 months to lose 110 lbs!I went from a size 22 to a size 8!I highly recommend Suzanne's book series to anyone struggling with losing weight! It was a God-sent for me! ... Product Description
Getting older can be brutal—women gain weight, lose their sex drive, experience hot flashes, suffer memory loss, become short-tempered, find it difficult to sleep, and on and on. It’s not so easy for men, either—they start to lose energy and stamina as they age, too (and they have to live with women going through menopause). After years of being thin and fit and full of energy, Suzanne herself encountered the “Seven Dwarfs of Menopause”—Itchy, Bitchy, Sweaty, Sleepy, Bloated, Forgetful, and All-Dried-Up. Instead of living out the rest of her life cranky, sleep-deprived, and libido-less, Suzanne set out to discover how she could get her mind, body, and life back and banish those pesky dwarfs for good.

The result is The Sexy Years: Discover the Hormone Connection—The Secret to Fabulous Sex, Great Health, and Vitality, for Women and Men. In this passionately argued and enormously practical book, Suzanne supports her own research and experiences with the expertise of leading doctors in the field of women’s and men’s health and sexuality to create an inspiring, accessible call-to-arms to women to radically rethink how they approach life after fifty, and give them the tools to turn their lives around.

Suzanne has discovered that the second half of life has been more rewarding, fun, and purposeful than her younger years. The key to her happiness? Taking natural bioidentical hormones. Natural hormones, which mimic the hormones produced in our own bodies that are almost completely lost with aging, are the answer to the symptoms of menopause that plague women. Recent findings from the medical community show that synthetic hormone replacement therapy
(HRT) may be harmful to women—thus, thousands of women are looking for what else they can do to alleviate their symptoms. In The Sexy Years, Suzanne comes to the rescue with a step-by-step plan and detailed information about how women can take control of their health, for themselves and for their men, including:

• What the differences are between synthetic and bioidentical hormones, and why bioidentical hormones help women lose weight, reinvigorate their sex lives, and fight the symptoms of aging
• How doctors do not receive adequate training about hormones and are slaves to the pharmaceutical industry, and what questions every woman must ask her physician about hormone replacement therapy and her health
• How Suzanne turned her life around, with information about how often she visits her doctor, blood work, what hormones she takes, how to get these hormones, and more
• What male menopause, or andropause, is and how men can also take bioidentical hormones and regain the energy they had in their youth
• What a variety of specialists think about natural hormones, health, and sexuality—Suzanne shares the best advice from these doctors and provides a resource list of physicians and pharmacies

With bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, Suzanne has found the fountain of youth, the elixir that has made her feel thirty years old again. In combination with her Somersize diet and fitness plan, which she also writes about here, Suzanne has never felt better. The beauty of growing older, she maintains, is that you can combine the wisdom of age with the vitality of youth. Suzanne makes it perfectly clear how women and men can regain their zest for life at any age. These really are the sexy years!

From the Hardcover edition.Amazon.com Review
Menopause is a complicated business. Medical issues vary widely and treatment options seem endless--especially in the wake of bad news about hormone replacement. While The Sexy Years isn't meant to supply you with a specific program of daily supplements, Suzanne Somers does offer an excellent inspiration to march forth and take control of this stage of health. Much of the book covers her own experience of menopause, including some detail on her breast cancer ordeal. She advocates the use of natural, bioidentical hormonal replacement, available through a variety of creams and supplements--it's a rare page that doesn't gush about the power of these substances or raise negative issues about the use of synthetic hormones. Introductory medical information is included on how estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone work together to keep people healthy and active; the vocabulary is understandable and generally entertaining rather than overwhelming. She provides interviews with a variety of doctors and women in various stages of menopause. These will give women a good place to start with topics to address with their own medical providers. While a short index of doctors and compounding pharmacies is provided, most women will have to do their own research to find local natural hormone specialists. But if you're looking for a boost of courage to bring up these treatments with your doctor--or simply want to investigate more natural alternatives to the standard synthetics--this is a fine place to get started.--Jill Lightner ... "I got skinny on fat," claims Suzanne Somers. It sounds toogood to be true--a weight-loss program that lets you "eat incredible, rich foods in abundant portions while the unwanted pounds effortlesslymelt away." Most nutritionists would cringe at the idea that peopletrying to lose weight don't need to restrict their dietary fat, butSuzanne Somers and her "Somercizers" insist it works. Fat (evensaturated fat) isn't the enemy, she claims--it's "products loaded withsugar, white flour, hydrogenated oils, and chemicals and preservativesthat replace real fats." Get Skinny on Fabulous Foodfollows Somers's Eat Great, Lose Weight with a recap of theSomersize program, which involves eliminating "funky foods" like sugarand starch and using a type of food combining. Also included aregrateful letters from followers of the program, menu suggestions, and150 new recipes. Recipes include such fat-filled dishes as Leslie'sMushroom Broccoli and Egg Cupcakes (with butter, oil, Swiss cheese, and nine large eggs), Beef Stroganoff (with butter, oil, and two cupsof heavy cream), Ginger Creme Brûlée (with butter, heavy cream, ninelarge egg yolks, and even the enemy: sugar), Cappuccino ChocolateChunk Cheesecake (with cream cheese, eggs, chocolate, sour cream,and--yup--sugar). No calorie counts or nutritional breakdowns areincluded. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost weight and kept it off with somersizing
I had tried every diet fad and never had sustainable weight loss.I'd loose some weight and eventually gain it back plus a few pounds.I saw Suzanne on TV one day talking about her success with her weight-loss program.I was intrigued and thought I might give it a try.Well, 10 years later and 100 lbs lighter I can testify that her plan does indeed work.By eliminating sugars, combining food properly, and eating high fiber foods, the weight came off and stayed off.I think the word diet is deceiving. It implies a beginning and an end.Ifeel that when you accept it as a lifestyle change you will be successful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ease of Digestion, especially post-surgical
Others have reviewed this book well, but I want to add something important.

This book is wonderful for people recovering from any kind of surgery of the GI tract. Anyone with issues digesting food, or plagued by gas, bloating, reflux, constipation, or diarrhea, should seriously consider buying this book.

Most "issues" disappear within a day or two, and by day three, most feel "normal" again.

It's a very healthy way to eat, stressing fresh, REAL foods, and as others have said, the recipes are pretty darn good too.

For those concerned with the "diet" aspect, should they need to gain weight instead of lose it, this book is still useful. For one thing, you will be able to keep food down. For another, you can always increase the fat content and still gain or maintain your weight.

I purchsed this product because all the reviews said how great her books were and that the diet worked.I am not disappointed.I've already lost 15 pounds in less than 2 months and finally have hope that I am going to lose all this weight and keep it off.The recipes are wonderful, easy to cook. The only problem I'm having is there are so many recipes I want to try, how do I pick which one to cook first? And it solves the age old question, what to cook for supper. Now I have a plethora of selections and get to lose weight, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Losing weight and loving it.
I bought this book last year in Jan 2008, I thought about getting on it soon. I was not really wanting to start up doing it but after I weighed myself one morning and saw what I weighed I knew I needed to start losing weight or become extremely fat. That day was Feb 27th 2008, I was 254 pounds heavy. I was shocked to the core that I was that heavy. I opened the book that morning and started to read the book from page one to the last page. Now come February 27, 2009, I weighed in at 199 pounds, that was a 55 pound weight loss since I started the plan. If you are serious about losing weight and keeping it off, this book is for you. ... Portobello Mushrooms with Bubbling Pesto

Serves 4
These mushrooms make a great appetizer or a delicious accompaniment for a summer meal alongside a steak. They work especially well if you are using your outdoor grill, but you can also broil them in the oven.

4 large portobello mushrooms
Olive oil for brushing
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 recipe Basil Pesto (p. 155)
4 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Trim the stems off the mushrooms. Brush mushrooms with olive oil and season lightly. Cook gill side down over medium coals or in the broiler for 5 minutes.

Turn the mushrooms over and spread a spoonful of pesto over the entire surface. Continue to cook for 10 minutes or until the mushrooms are very tender and the pesto is bubbling. Sprinkle the Parmesan on top of the pesto and return to broiler until cheese is melted and golden.

Dawn's Deviled Eggs

Makes 10
My good friend Barry Manilow has a wonderful cook named Dawn. These are her delicious deviled eggs. Her original recipe includes avocado, which makes the filling green. Try it that way for Level Two.

5 hard-boiled eggs, halved lengthwise
1 tablespoon minced scallion, white and light green parts
1 large jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
Juice from 1 lime
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
red chili flakes for garnish

Remove the yolks from the whites. Set the whites aside. Mash the yolks in a bowl with a fork. Add the scallion, jalapeño, lime juice, mayonnaise, and salt. Add more mayonnaise to reach desired consistency. Mash with a fork until blended. Using a teaspoon, carefully stuff whites with yolk mixture, mounding the tops.
For extra heat, garnish with red chili flakes.
For Level Two
Add 1 whole mashed avocado to the egg yolk mixture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for people with digestion problems too!
This was the first book I purchased from Suzanne Somers. I love her recipes, and you certainly CAN lose weight by following her very healthy, and incredibly simple plan. However, I want to talk about another benefit from the book/plan.

Following her plan long term is fairly easy, although if you, as I do, love sandwiches, after you reach your "goal" and if you are willing to risk the gastro-intestinal issues of mixing food types, or if you just want to splurge sometimes, cheating is OK.Just get back on the program if you are still using it to control gastro-intestinal or post surgical issues, or want to continue to drop the pounds.

Frankly, it's the "healthiest" diet book out there, and not having to "count" is wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Weight Loss Plan on the Market
My friend lost 100# in 9 months on this plan; My daughter went from a size 22 to an 8 in 12 months. A coworker had her blood pressure medicine halved after being on this eating plan for 6 months.I have already lost 12# in 2 weeks.I love it.I know it works. The book was in excellent condition and the price was fabulous.

4-0 out of 5 stars Health
Good information on how to eat correctly - really works - have lost weight easily and am still losing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well with Mediterranean Diet
Several years ago I lost weight Somersizing. I'm back so that I can continue to eliminate junk from my diet and lose 25. I learned how to cook vegetables the first time around and am so grateful to Suzanne for bringing vegetables into my diet. The only canned food I buy is tomato puree and beans. However, I really recommend olive oil over butter, and I this time around I'm moderating dairy. I also am no longer addicted to diet soda - I'm too afraid of the chemicals now. I really can see a correlation between this way of eating and the original European/Mediterranean Diet. My mother passed away from cancer 5 years ago at 69. When she moved to this country, she thought she was a health nut, but we ate a lot of processed foods. Our kitchen had mac & cheese, condensed soups, margarine, milk, ice cream, white rice and pasta. Mom often struggled with 30 extra pounds. She eliminated garlic and fresh herbs, because these were not popular in the US when I was growing up. I have herbs and vegetables growing everywhere, much like my Greek grandmother, and love the Farmer's Market! My grandma lived to almost 90, my grandpa, 102! I really believe that fresh food and moderate food combining is wonderful for you. I now eat food based on how it will make me feel later. I don't dare diet - who wants to feel awful? At 38, I also now realize that deprivation dieting ages you faster. Even though I need to lose these last pounds, the olive oil and fats make me look much younger than I am. Also, one unhappy result of low-fat diets was that I lost weight in my chest first (not pretty when you have no fat there and have had 2 children). This never happened with Somersizing!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Feel GREAT
I bought this book because I was looking for a formula to gain hormonal balance...Well, so far so good.
This eating plan makes great sense and is so very easy to follow. I do not experience sugar highs and lows and I feel better than I have in a long time.

Once you learn the "rules" this is a plan that you can stick to all your life. ... Read more

Product Description
Who says you can’t sizzle in the second half of life?

At last, a solution! In Slim and Sexy Forever, Suzanne Somers outlines a program speci?cally designed to address the needs of women and men who want to lose weight and replace the lust for life that naturally wanes with age. In this “baby boomer’s recipe for the fountain of youth,” Suzanne shows you how to:

• melt away the unwanted pounds

• reinvigorate your sex drive

• capture youthful vitality

• develop a more positive outlook on life

• sharpen memory

• eliminate hot flashes

• achieve optimum health from the inside out

In her runaway New York Times bestseller The Sexy Years, Suzanne changed the way we look at our health and hormones, showing how replacing hormones lost in the aging process with natural bioidentical hormones can eliminate symptoms associated with aging.

Now, in Slim and Sexy Forever, Suzanne combines her cutting-edge information on natural hormone replacement with her successful weight loss program, Somersize, for a one-two punch that is the only proven solution to the problems associated with aging. Working with innovative doctors, Suzanne has created a program that alleviates symptoms such as mood swings, sleepless nights, hot flashes, and diminished sex drive that are so common as we get older. Simultaneously, her phenomenally successful Somersize program shows you how to beat a stalling metabolism and stay lean and trim while eating remarkably delicious food. With millions of people losing weight on the program, it is a proven formula for success.

Suzanne makes clear in this fascinating new book that if your hormones are out of balance, you will not be able to lose weight. Weight loss must be approached with a twofold strategy as you get older: balance your hormones the bioidentical way and eat correctly. One doesn’t work without the other.

In Slim and Sexy Forever you’ll also learn:

• The truth about carbs: Depriving yourself of too many carbs will lead to hormonal imbalance and weight gain. Eat the right carbs to lose weight!

• Plateau-busting tips: Suzanne explains why you hit plateaus and exactly how to push past them to achieve your goal weight.

• The connection between adrenals and weight gain: If you blow out your adrenals trying to be Superwoman, you are going to gain weight and feel fatigued. Find out how to prevent that from happening.

And, as always, Suzanne makes losing weight easy with more than 100 delicious new recipes, including Crab Bisque with Sweet Corn and Crab Relish, Somersize Tex-Mex Chicken Drumettes and Meatballs, Peppered Pork Chops with Fried Sage Leaves, Warm Chocolate Soufflé Cakes, and Wild Berry Crostada. These are Suzanne’s best recipes yet!

From the Hardcover edition.Amazon.com Review
Suzanne Somers may forever be ingrained in American minds as the ditzy blond from Three's Company, but her five past bestselling diet books prove that her fit figure is admired by millions. Now in her 50s, Somers has endured what she calls the "Seven Dwarves" of menopause—Itchy, Bitchy, Sweaty, Sleepy, Bloated, Forgetful, and All Dried Up. She claims that until one tames the hormonal roller-coaster of menopause, there's little hope of losing weight: "If your hormones are out of balance, no weight-loss program will work for you." She recommends supplementation with "natural, bioidentical hormones" available from a compounding pharmacist, or an endocrinologist specializing in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). The synthetic hormones so widely prescribed, she says, cause the body to "mimic pregnancy," and result in a "high-insulin state," both of which lead to weight gain and bloating.

Read our interview
with Suzanne Somers
While finding these natural hormonal supplements may be difficult for some readers, as the majority of BHRT-prescribing endocrinologists practice in the Los Angeles area, Somers stresses it's worth making the trip for a BHRT appointment. Moreover, readers may balk at a major side effect of taking bioidentical hormones: the return of one's menstrual period. "To me, having a period is a small price to pay for great health, increased vitality, and a slim figure," she says. Somers adds to her hormonal advice a detailed menu plan, which includes limited amounts of whole grains, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. She also recommends a few "high-glycemic" foods to avoid at all costs. The recipes are mostly drool-worthy, with dishes including Chicken Parmigiana and Warm Chocolate Soufflé Cakes, with the less labor-intensive dishes requiring some of her packaged Somersize-brand sauces, spices, and sweeteners. While the hormone supplementation in her plan may be hard to come by, her dietary advice is much more sensible than what you'll find in the majority of weight-loss books these days.--Erica Jorgensen

From Suzanne's personal recipe collection
Suzanne Somers lifts the veil on her upcoming books, Somersize Appetizers and Somersize Cocktails, revealing two mouthwatering recipes that will get your party started, the Somersize way.

Chili Braised Pork with Pocatello Salsa in Butter Lettuce Cups
From Somersize Appetizers - PRO/FATS & VEGGIES - LEVEL ONE
Serves 8

This spicy and delicious appetizer is perfect alongside a cool and refreshing mojito. For Level Two serve on crispy-fried whole-wheat tortilla triangles.

1 3-pound pork butt, cut into small chunks
Sea salt and freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
I red bell pepper, seeded and medium dice
1 red onion, medium diced
3-4 jalapeno chilies, sliced
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 cup chopped tomatoes
2 cups chicken broth
16 small butter lettuce leaves (to use for cups)

½ jicama, julienned finely
½ red onion, sliced thinly
2 teaspoons olive oil
Juice of ½ lime
Sea salt and freshly ground pepper

6 tomatillos, cut in half
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

For Pork:
Season pork liberally with salt and pepper. In a braising pan (or stock pot) over medium high, add olive oil and pork.Sear on both sides.Add peppers, onions, chilies and sauté for about 10 minutes, until golden and caramelized.Add tomato paste, tomatoes and chicken stock.Bring to a boil and cover.Reduce heat to low.Cook until pork falls apart, about an hour.Remove from heat.Remove pork, reserving the liquid and allow pork to cool.Pull pork into small pieces.Place pulled pork into a bowl and add 4–6 ounces of the liquid.Set aside.

For Jicama Garnish:
Toss all ingredients into a nonmetallic bowl until well combined.Allow flavors to combine for at least 30 minutes.

For Tomatillo Salsa:
Preheat oven to 400.Place tomatillos onto a baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper.Roast in oven until caramelized and soft, about 35–45 minutes.Remove from oven and while still warm, chop until they become the texture of chunky salsa.

To assemble:
Place a spoonful of pulled pork into each butter lettuce leaf.Top with jicama garnish and a dollop of salsa.Serve immediately.

Somersize Mojito
From Somersize Cocktails - ALMOST LEVEL ONE

This Cuban drink is light and refreshing with a burst of fresh mint and lime. Normally it’s sweetened with sugar, but I use SomerSweet instead.I have to say, I actually like the taste of SomerSweet better!Sugar can leave a bubbly film in your mouth but SomerSweet is so clean and fresh tasting.Traditionally this drink is made with rum, but I much prefer the taste of vodka.Make it either way you like. This is the perfect summer drink and if I had to pick only one cocktail in the entire book, this would be it.There are many different preferences when it comes to this drink.I tend to like mine with strong lime and mint flavor. Some like it less intense with more club soda.Adjust to your liking.

1 1/2 oz light rum
4-6 fresh mint leaves
1 ½Key lime (preferred) or 1 regular (Persian) lime
¾teaspoon SomerSweet (or 1 tablespoon sugar)
2-4 oz soda water

Add mint leaves, lime juice, pressed limes, and SomerSweet into a highball glass. "Muddle" ingredients with a wooden stick or handle to release mint flavor.Add ice, rum, and soda water.Serve with limes and leaves in drink.

This book is mistitled. I think people will bypass it due to the name. I use it daily for receipes and suggestions. I also sent it
to my skeptical daughter and she made lots of changes and said I'm going to do it. She lost 5 lbs the 1 st. week.
Great work. Thanks Suzanne for sharing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I started this diet 2 months ago and have lost 15 pounds so far. I have not felt deprived once. I have lots of energy and feel great. The recipes are so good, you don't feel like you are on a diet at all. So much of what is talked about in this book explains why America is so overweight. It just makes sense.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slim & Sexy forever
I like all of Suzanne Somers books. She has great recipes (although they tend to be expensive) and great advice.I lost a lot of weight on her eating plans.Customer beware of her tendency to preach bioidentical hormone therapy. No one knows the long-term use of these products and as a consumer I would not buy them. Instead I would buy Jillian Michaels' new book about metabolism and read how to balance the system naturally. Otherwise, Suzanne has a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book -
A terrific book. Will reread many times as a lot of learning to do. Many advanced theories.Shirley

Thank GOD 4 getting the book published. Oprah & Suzanne for their strength and courage to tell us all about menopause. I don't know why I never found Suzanne's books earlier. I've been on synthetic HRT for 6yrs since I was 44. So disgusted with the medical profession only treating symptoms, right now. My periods stopped pretty early and after months of trying to find out what was wrong with me. Finally I got some help. I've been doing great on curves & have lost and kept off 80lbs 8yrs ago, got 50-65 lbs to go. In my case Dr's. patronized me because of my weight & being diabetic. At some point you just think they are right and you are wrong or maybe I'm too defensive about my body. NOT! I'm going to pursue BHRT as I'm still experiencing significate trials of the 7 dwarfs syndrome. Especially the last 6mo w/#8th.. appeared & has taken control (seething).I'm going to change my therapy asap. After reading how my body is living like a pregnant mare or whatever high insulin no wonder I keep getting more meds added every year and still feel bad. I'm so mad at the doctors not explaining this to me. I havent finished reading the weight loss stuff yet but look forward to trying anything and everything. My BF is 6yrs younger than I and I'm way to young to give up sex & happiness. I've accepted miserable for too long. I'm anticipating a new me. Thank you Suzanne, your next book should be "What our Mothers didn't have the heart to tell us". I'm sure there is tons more information you can share. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, enjoyable book!
When I read a book in just a few hours, it typically means that I really enjoyed it . . . such was certainly the case with 365 WAYS TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE by Suzanne Somers.

She presents essays for every day of the year that are based on real-life examples involving her own life . . . I could relate to many of them . . .and for those that weren't relevant to me, I could
see how they have affected the lives of others I know.

I particularly liked the affirmations Somers gives at the end of each essay . . . they might seem basic, yet too often we need to be reminded that:

Each day is another chance to get it right. Today I am going to concentrate on kindness, caring, accountability, decency, and love. I realize as a human being I make mistakes, but as I grow I use each bump in the road as a springboard for learning. Every day I will try harder to be the best person I can be, but I will not chastise myself when I fail. Failure is part of the journey, and I am grateful for it.

I will not wait until it is too late to tell those who mean something to me how I feel about them. The words, " I should have" will feel empty if I miss out on my chance.

I found myself continually taking notes on ideas that I could apply to my daily existence . . . the problem: there were so many of them that it was hard to narrow them down to just these few that I could present here:

Eliminate the word should from your vocabulary. Should is judgmental, inferring you "know better" than the other. Whenever you start any sentence with "You never" or "You always" or "You should," the person on the receiving end feels backed into a corner. Just as a snake strikes when backed into a corner, so too will we humans. What good is accomplished when you back someone against the wall? It would be constructive to say, "When you (blank) it makes me feel (blank)." For instance, "When you use that tone of voice, it makes me feel a fool." It would take an inordinate degree of insensitivity for the accuser not to apologize. Then the argument or accusations are over. Now you have been able to express your feelings without either person
being hurt. This is the art of communicating: expressing your feelings at the moment they occur, to keep them from building up and out of proportion, without wounding another while doing so. The only thing we "should" do in life is to make ourselves the best person we can be. That is enough to occupy ourselves for a lifetime.

Today I use the following exercise in my daily life, and I am amazed at how it has helped me in my quest to be a better person. When criticized, I agree with the person with whom I am talking, if in fact I can see the wisdom of their criticism. Suddenly the discussion shifts in its thrust. The other person is stopped midthought, and true and real discussion takes place. As a result we both learn something from the encounter. Usually we become closer. My mother did know best. I hope she knows it.

What is your gift? What is it you do well? When you know that, you will be able to live your best life through the giving of your gift. This is necessary to feel that your life has meaning. There is nothing more painful than knowing you have not discovered and developed your talent, that you have missed your opportunity to make your mark on the world. Discovering your true gift and
following it are essential to being happy. When you have not done the work to find what it is that you love, you will end up living with the realization that you are unhappy because you are living the wrong life. How many lawyers are sitting in their stuffy offices wishing that instead of going to law school, because that was the job that paid the most money, they had become a basketball coach? After all the schooling, it would take tremendous courage to announce that law wasn't all it was cracked up to be; that most of the work lawyers do is reading long, boring brief. The equation is simple: Do what you love, and you will be happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
This book is a wonderful, uplifting book that gives you an insight into Suzanne Somers' life, while at the same time giving you inspiration and positive affirmations on achieving your goals and/or dreams. Suzanne gives a year's worth of wonderful, worthwhile advice. She reviews her past somewhat quoting from her other books like After The Fall and Keeping Secrets. And she uses that wisdom to her advantage, as well as the advantage of the reader. Her candor and wit are very refreshing. Suzanne Somers is definitely an inspiration to all those people who want to change their lives, but don't know how. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for answers on ways to change their lives. This book has been like a bible for me, and a lifesaver as well. It has changed a lot of my perspectives on life. You can be happy if you want to be. But it's up to you. You have to want to win. ... Read more

This Way of Eating Saved my life.. I just found out I'm a type II Diabetic and thought my party was over... Then I found Suzanne's Somersizing Plan and my blood suger dropped over 50 points in one week! Suzanne is presenting not just a diet book.. She's setting an example of a wonderful lifestyle.. Imagine getting up in the morning and preparing a delicious Eggs Benedict using a grilled Portobello Mushroom instead of english muffin.. Add some Bacon sprinkles ( I like turkey bacon ) and you have a gourmet start to your day.. head out for a trip to the farmers market where you can walk out in the warm sunshine and choose more wonderful goodies to bring home to prepare lunch.. how about a BLT in Crunchy Iceburg Lettuce instead of bread.. then a organic Steak and mashed Celery root instead of mashed potatoes.. last but not least.. end your meal with a fabulous desert made with somersweet and you're not only keeping your blood sugar low.. you're loosing that spare tire as well.. Now. if that's not a party.. I don't know what is..
You've got to try this.. My one request is for the Food Network to invite Suzanne to have her own show! Talk about inspiration..

5-0 out of 5 stars touching, a little frightening at times, but still an incredible story
Suzanne Somers is such a courageous person for sharing this with the public.I loved this book even when I was crying and reading at the same time.Well worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Residual Symptoms
Suzanne Somers gives us amazing insight into the healing process of a relation to an individual with alcoholism.
As far back as 1939 we were told (by William D. Silkworth, MD, New York, 1939)that alcoholism is something like an allergy: an organism runs completely wild when a certain toxic substance is taken in. And in case of allergy to alcohol, cascades of neurotransmitters are metabolized in a detrimental way. With the central nervous system affected, we have unbelievable changes in feeling, thinking and behavior. Let alone the impact on physical health. So at least from then on we could have known, it does not make sense to call someone "guilty" because s/he is being afflicted with a disease.
I appreciate Ms. Somers book very much, but feel obliged to add a remark to one paragraph on the penultimate page in her book, where she states that she
1. would not have changed anything, and
2. won her greatest insights because of this disease.
3. owed her success to the disease.
There is a logical mistake I want to correct, and for a deeper reason:
It is not, BECAUSE her dad was afflicted with this disease, did she gain insight, did she have success,it is ALTHOUGH her dad was afflicted. Such disease sucks energy.
Otherwise it would not make sense to alert people and give them a warning about alcohol. It would be logic to tell them: "Go ahead, drink alcohol as much as you can, and you and everybody around you will be so happy - after a long long while."
It is the residual symptoms of psychosis still there, the re-interpretation of reality, instead of looking in the cruel eye of facts: yes, it was horrible, but nevertheless, I MADE IT!
This "I made it IN SPITE OF ALL THIS" requires self confidence and "a kind of pride that pleases God" (Thomas the Aquinate) which is difficult to learn for children of individuals afflicted with alcoholism.
Ms. Somer's re-interpretation of the disease is a last desperate effort to find some sense in the chaotic happenings. But disease does not make sense, it just overstrains everybody involved, and therefore:
PLEASE, DO WHAT YOU CAN FOR PREVENTION! to read Suzanne Somer's precious book might be one step.

4-0 out of 5 stars Starts slow, but becomes very interesting.
I was advised to read this book since my father was an alcoholic.I was not very interested in it in the begging, but as I kept readingit became very interesting.I would suggest anyone to pick this up and read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars When your little world is out of whack!
With an intention to skim this book, I became engrossed in what Suzanne Somers had to say about her life before fame and living with a severely alcoholic parent.

She shares vivid details she endured at the hands of her father, low self-esteem, shame, fear, anger, violence, craziness, hostility, chaos and more. As she describes her pain and emotional feelings, she backs up what she says to give the reader some better understanding of her behavior or that of the alcoholic.

One example is when her father ripped her nicest clothes she wore while attending school. With a heavy object, she almost cracked his head open and feared he was dead; she blamed herself and begged that he not die. Asking herself why she reacted with violence over simple clothes, her response was that the clothes were a mask that hid who she really was and a mask to the shameful crazy sick homelife. She helps the reader by explaining thoughts and actions taken.

The story begins when she was a child and it follows Suzanne after she left home to reveal a chaotic financially struggling young woman with a kid, early marriage, affairs, abortion, therapy, and so on. Fortunately, she and Alan Hamel, a Canadian producer, resolved their edgy relationship combining two families and they lived happily ever after, since she is still married to him as of 2007.

Suzanne's mother was not a drinker, but too weak and powerless to intervene. Back in those days it was easier to let drinkers just be drinkers.

But I am baffled how a mother allows a man to be cruel to her children, to destroy their spirit and soul?I'm quite sure the mother's esteem is broken down too.To me, there can not ever be any excuse to torment children.

The final notes Suzanne Somers shares come from a dinner/entertainment act sponsored by the Alcoholics Anonymous, initiated by her sister Maureen, who has recovered. Two brothers followed the path of their father also. Somers feels grateful that her entire family has recovered or is in the process. This book was published in 1988 and her father had been free of alcohol for 10 years.

This is a very well-written book that helps to understand the family dynamics and the troubled alcoholic.... Rizzo

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and Insightful!
I didn't know what to expect when I first picked up this book. Suzanne did a superb job in how she handled the many delicate issues in this book. She spoke very frankly about many aspects of her life. Not just about her alcoholic family, but about her husband Alan Hamel, her two stepchildren, her son Bruce, and her Three's Company co-stars. Suzanne has been through a lot in her life, and it is inspirational in that she is a survivor, she is a smart businesswoman, caring person, loving mother, and most of all, NOT a shallow Hollywood airhead. If you are a fan of Suzanne or just want to know more about her, this is a good read. I commend her for her honesty! ... Read more

Product Description
In this moving and inspiring follow-up to her New York Times best-selling memoir, Keeping Secrets, Suzanne Somers revisits her years before and after Three's Company and reveals with fearless self-examination how the dizzying rise and fall of her television career mirrored the chaos and conflict in her personal life.
With her usual candor and perspective, Suzanne takes readers inside the rehearsal hall of Three's Company and offers a never-before-seen look at the competition, jealousy, and greed that accompanies a hit TV show. As the lovable
Chrissy Snow, Suzanne Somers became the toast of Hollywood, with all its glittery perks. Yet all was not perfect, she confesses. Simultaneously, her professional success and her relationship with her husband, the love of a lifetime, were being sorely tested as they attempted to blend their families together and were forced to deal with the anger and resentment of their mutual children.
When she became the first female star to ask for the same pay as male television stars, Suzanne was fired from Three's Company and the once-
welcoming doors to the most powerful offices in Hollywood slammed shut. For the better part of the next decade, she was unofficially blackballed from television because of this incident.
In this insightful memoir, Suzanne tells all, from the heady days of stardom to her fall from grace and the grief that followed, to her eventual resurrection as an entrepreneur, best-selling author, and, once again, beloved TV star. Every reader who's ever experienced loss or felt a great opportunity slip through his or her fingers can relate
to Suzanne's story of how she fought back, won
control over her own destiny, and learned lessons along the journey.Amazon.com Review
You have to admire a book with the prologue: "My goal inlife is to become the person my dog thinks I am." SuzanneSomers's third book, After the Fall chronicles how she becameblackballed from Hollywood after demanding a raise for her role onThree's Company. While she was only asking for pay equal to that ofmale TV stars of that era ($150,000 a week), she was promptly cannedfrom the show and had difficulty finding acting work for the nextdecade. Simultaneously, Somers was dealing with her new husband'schilly treatment toward her son from her first marriage, Bruce, andBruce's reaction to having a stepsister and a stepbrother.

Somers's descriptions of the star-studded Hollywood parties can occasionallybecome too heavy-handed, and it can be hard to sympathize when Somers saysshe had to cut back her lavish spending, such as on her $1,500-a-daypersonal hair stylist and makeup artist. However, readers interested inbehind-the-scenes descriptions such as those of inflamed egos on the set ofthe show, the intricacies of the filming of a Barbara Walters interview, and the drama of choreographing a Las Vegas show will find this book arevealing read, especially given its 16 pages ofpictures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Naked Truth
What I like about this book the most is her candidness about how the effects of growing up with an alcoholic father clouded her judgment on everything from her son to her husband to her career. Money in her life was just another way to make people happy. I wonder if even today the effects of alcoholism have really dissipated. Only those who have truly experienced a raging alcoholic father can fully understand the life long ripple that never ends. Suzanne is more that brutally honest in her descriptions of her feelings and is willing to put her heart out there, knowing that not all people who read her story will understand. I bought the book hoping to understand more about her affair with her now current husband, yet she spoke little of it, but my guess is it is because the book was more about The Fall.

3-0 out of 5 stars A BIT Disappointed
I like Suzanne Somers, but I didn't grasp how she actually got back on her feet AFTER THE FALL, which is what I wanted to know!

5-0 out of 5 stars Suzanne survived
Although I am not a huge reader of books, I have to admit going through depression before I moved last summer. I picked up thisbook in the library and enjoyed every word. Suzanne Somers survived the hard times of her early career and rose to fame. This is a great book to read. I was fortunate to locate a copy on Amazon and happy to say I now own my copy. I enjoy watching her movies, and also her sitcoms Three's Company and Step By Step. Pick up your copy you will not be disappointed and enjoy. The title just fits of how my life went over the years , and how I got myself together to survive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining
Even if you were a little kid when Three's Company was popular, you will still enjoy this biography.Suzane Somers always kind of annoyed me, but I liked her more after reading this, even though I am sure other people have another side of the story. I liked her first book as well. They are both very detailed, right down to what outfits she was wearing. A good book, I would recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will give you a greater appreciation of author
Enjoyed the taped version of AFTER THE FALL, written and read
by Suzanne Somers . . . it is her third book . . . this one accounts
how she picked herself up, dusted herself off and started all over again
after being dropped from THREE'S COMPANY in its fifth season

It gave me a better appreciation for Somers who had difficulty finding
work for nearly ten years after she dared ask for pay equal to that
of male TV stars of that era . . . she refused to give up, however,
and instead became involved in a hit Las Vegas show, along with
an informational and several books . . . when she resurfaces in 1991
to become one of the stars of another TV show, STEP BY STEP, I
almost cheered. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a staggering work of poetic genius
Totally amazing and worth every penny. With lines like "And if anybody has any extra love to spare, even a drop / I wish they wouldn't waste it on God," it's baffling why Suzanne Somers wasn't named Americas' Poet Laureate. You must read this!

5-0 out of 5 stars You've read the prose, now try the poems!
This book is a gem! Front to back there's not a piece in here that doesn't instantly call to mind long walks on the beach at sunset with gentle saxophpones twiddling away in the background. And you can tell it's poetry because it rhymes! Nothing touches the soul quite like a Suzanne Somers poem about bed wetting, and thanks to her inspiration I've nearly quit myself. The writing here is nearly as strong as in her first children-themed diet book, Eat Me (The Story of a Lonely Carrot). Worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touch Me The Poems Of Suzanne Somers
I was first made aware of this work of poetry on Julie Brown's MTV television show "Just Say Julie" in the early 1990's.I immediately rushed to find a copy and was lucky enough to find one for 50 cents (As well as a sad eyed Keane portrait and an AUTOGRAPHED 8x10 of Gary Coleman.) at a local Swap Meet....I paid the man and now am very glad I did!I am sure I have gotten almost double the price I paid in the deep and knowing thoughts Miss Somers conveyed in this slim book.I hope it will give you the joy and hope that I have garnered from it. Don't ask me to part with it!

Product Description
It's been more than a decade since Dr. Jonathan Wright introduced the concept of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) with the book Natural Hormone Replacement for Women Over 45 (Wright JVW, Morgenthaler J. Smart Publications, 1997), at a time when only a handful of clear thinking, knowledgeable doctors had ever heard about bio-identical hormones. Many women first learned the truth about HRT and BHRT from that first book; others later heard about it from TV celebrity Suzanne Somers, who described her personal experiences with a different version of BHRT in the first of a series of books. But the real stampede away from HRT and toward BHRT began in 2002 with the premature termination of a large, government-funded study-the Women's Health Initiative (WHI)-the results of which confirmed that the risks of conventional HRT unquestionably outweighed its benefits. In their new updated book, /Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement: The Science Explained/, authors Wright and Lenard have brought to light many examples of forgotten or ignored scientific studies combined with up-to-date clinical experience that provide solid support for the safety and benefits of BHRT. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book for Professionals and Serious Readers
In 1997, physicians were happily writing millions of prescriptions for Wyeth Pharmaceutical's Premarin®. A prophet crying in the wilderness, Dr. Wright wrote the definitive book on bio-identical hormone replacement, Natural Hormone Replacement for Women Over 45. In 2002 the large research study, The Women's Health Initiative, terminated the study because it found that Prempro® (Wyeth's estrogen made from pregnant mare urine and progesterone created in the lab) increased the incidence of breast cancer increase 26% and instead of reducing heart disease as previously believed, increased the incidence of heart disease. Further, it increased the incidence of dementia. Premarin® and Prempro® prescriptions plummeted. Despite fierce opposition by the pharmaceutical industry, bio-identical hormone replacement has been increasing in popularity. In Dec. 2009 Dr. Wright and Dr. Leonard wrote the currently definitive book on the subject, Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement: The Science Explained.

Iconoclast Dr. Jonathan Wright is a remarkable pioneer. He saw the light when others didn't know to look for it. He fought the drug companies and medical establishment at considerable personal cost. Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement, presents the research data on bio-identical hormone replacement and how it fosters good health and reduces the risk to cancer, heart disease, and dementia.

He discusses the importance of a full health assessment, testing several of the types of estrogen and testing progesterone and testosterone levels before supplementing. Testing also needs to be done periodically to measure whether the hormones are at optimal levels. He explains why the best hormone test is a 24-hour urine test, the importance of individually prescribing and compounding hormone supplements (as off the shelf bio-identical supplements only offer a few dose sizes and a few types of estrogen), and why creams are better than pills. His advice is solidly based in both considerable research and years of clinical experience. The book is written for professionals and for patients who are willing to do some homework. The subject is so vital to health and wellness that the homework is well worth the effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars PossiblyBest Available Discussion of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement
Stay Young and Sexy with Bio-identical Hormone Replacement expands and updates Jonathan Wright's earlier, briefer book, Natural Hormone Replacement for Women Over 45.Additional, newer published studies are analyzed.Additional information explaining how to reverse osteoporosis, fibrocysts, emphysema and skin wrinkling is included.

The advantages of transdermal hormone delivery are explained, although the authors appear to neglect the superior action of oral micronized bioidentical Prometrium for opening GABA receptors and reducing anxiety.Proponents of postmenopausal monthly cycling of Progesterone may be dissappointed to read Jonathan Wright does not recommend re-establishing monthly periods.

Using low Cobalt doses to decrease hypermetabolism of estrogens is explained.

Results of transdermal application of estriol and progesterone in facial skin care products is compared along with results of an oral collagen and hylauronic acid formula, which apparently produces noticeable results.

An expose of Wyeth-Ayers attempt to unfairly limit trade by attacking compounding pharmacies illiminates the extent to which legitimate nonprofit organizations have been corrupted by funding from pharmaceutical manufacturers.

A fascinating discussion of historical bioidentical hormone replacement reveals Chinese royalty actually distilled human hormones from urine and successfully used them, between 1025 and 1833 AD.

This book also contains some humor regarding some concepts which are probably self evident to most three year olds although they apparently have not been grasped by some physicians rigidly adhering to the prevailing FDA and AMA dogma.Perhaps the question posed on page 18 of this book, will help clarify some issues for physicians clinging to antiquated, unsafe hormone replacement regimens.

Book Review from The Perimenopause Blog by Magnolia Millier

Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement: The Science Explained by Dr. Jonathan V. Wright & Lane Lenard, PhD. with a foreword by Suzanne Somers.

First of all, I want to give kudos to Suzanne Somers.Yeah, I know, we all remember her as the ditzy blonde, Chrissie on Three's Company all those years ago and maybe some of you even remember her Thigh Master days.Cheesy, I know.

But you have to give the girl props for bringing A LOT of attention to bio-identical hormones. I know she's not the first person nor even the pioneer, but she has put a face on bio-identicals and for that, she deserves credit in my opinion.

In Suzanne's foreword, she reminds us once again that knowledge is power.I couldn't agree more. I have beat the drum since I've been blogging about women's issues, on how important it is to have good information and knowledge to make informed decisions.

Dr. Wright's book, Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement: The Science Explained women can get more knowledge and information and do just that.

Dr. Wright lays out the case for bio-iodentical hormones with over 40 years of research, in which he cites his sources and medical case studies. As a medical doctor, Dr. Wright's work is based in real medical science and research and not bogus junk-science, as those who are opposed to bio-identicals would have you to believe.

In his preface, Dr. Wright begins with the debate of hormones produced from horse urine versus hormones produced from more biologically compatible sources for humans.Though the bio-identical hormone debate is new to us, the entire subject of bio-identicals is not.

In fact, the ancient Chinese were mimicking and producing bio-identical human hormones as far back as the years 1025 to 1833 AD.A fact that I found particularly interesting and intriguing.

Though the book is full of medical research and plenty of sources cited to back up his claims, I think you will still be able to find this book easy to read as a lay person.

Personally, though I appreciate all of the sources and research being cited, I'm more of an "okay, so what can I do about it" kind of reader.

Dr. Wright synthesizes the information and distills it down to something that is more palatable and easier to take in, for those of you who may be like me.

Dr. Wright discusses the common symptoms of menopause that so many of us complain about, such as mood swings, vaginal dryness, loss of libido and those dreaded night sweats,in excellent detail and also introduces exactly how and why bio-identicals can help. Again, nothing like being able to connect the dots between estrogen and our symptoms.

No discussion on bio-identical hormones would be complete though without pointing out the political wrangling that is currently going on within the medical community withthe pharmaceutical companies (who do not want to release their monetary grip on the situation) and the FDA, who often present difficulties and roadblocks for those who would like to see change in how menopause and perimenopause symptoms are treated.

I am sure there are good-willed and well-intentioned physicians who have genuine and real questions about bio-identical hormones and therefore, are not eager to jump on the bandwagon just yet.

I can certainly appreciate their concerns and understand why they would want to continue to debate. In fact, I personally think it's a good idea. However, the pharmaceutical companies have a much different agenda, based in profit concerns rather than a concern for the health and well-being of women.

Dr. Wright devotes an entire chapter to the politics and debate of bio-identical hormones which I found to be excellent and useful so that we, the consumers and patients, can "know the score" so to speak, who the players are in the debate and what they are seeking to gain.

There is a chapter detailing the different forms of bio-identicals (suppositories, creams, etc.), how they are compounded and where you can find compounding pharmacists and pharmacies. There is also a chapter on why men can benefit from hormone therapy as well.

There are many wonderful books on the market today on bio-identical hormones and I know that it can at times be overwhelming and confusing. But, in looking over Dr. Wright's book I can say that it seems to be another good one you can add to your library.

The goal of The Perimenopause Blog is to inform you of those that I run across that I think might be useful.Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement: The Science Explained is without a doubt, one of those books. ... Read more
