Product Description
In a searingly candid memoir which he authored himself, Grammy Award-winning pop icon Rick Springfield pulls back the curtain on his image as a bright, shiny, happy performer to share the startling story of his rise and fall and rise in music, film, and television and his lifelong battle with depression.

In the 1980s, singer-songwriter and actor Rick Springfield seemed to have it all: a megahit single in “Jessie’s Girl,” sold-out concert tours, follow-up hits that sold more than 17 million albums and became the pop soundtrack for an entire generation, and 12 million daily viewers who avidly tuned in to General Hospital to swoon over his portrayal of the handsome Dr. Noah Drake. Yet lurking behind his success as a pop star and soap opera heartthrob and his unstoppable drive was a moody, somber, and dark soul, one filled with depression and insecurity.

In Late, Late at Night, the memoir his millions of fans have been waiting for, Rick takes readers inside the highs and lows of his extraordinary life. By turns winningly funny and heartbreakingly sad, every page resonates with Rick’s witty, wry, self-deprecating, brutally honest voice. On one level, he reveals the inside story of his ride to the top of the entertainment world. On a second, deeper level, he recounts with unsparing candor the forces that have driven his life, including his longtime battle with depression and thoughts of suicide, the shattering death of his father, and his decision to drop out at the absolute peak of fame. Having finally found a more stable equilibrium, Rick’s story is ultimately a positive one, deeply informed by his passion for creative expression through his music, a deep love of his wife of twenty-six years and their two sons, and his life-long quest for spiritual peace. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Renewed my fandom...fanhood...fandomness...whatEVER.
Never thought I'd use the cliche "I've never liked a book enough to write a review..." but here I am.
I was a shallow, teenage fan of Springfield in the 80's, but haven't thought about him much since he fell off the radar.I saw him on Fox News being interviewed for this book by an obviously smitten Meghan Kelly and thought- "Wow- he's still around, imagine that..."He was so humble and self-depracating throughout the interview that he reeled me into reading his book.Downloaded it on my IPAD and could NOT put it down.I know he's probably honed his writing skills as a songwriter-but writing a book is a completely different animal.Didn't expect it to be so incredibly well written. Didn't think I'd like him as much as I did- his struggles, his love of animals, his addictions, his arrogance/humility (I know, I can't explain it either..)but his sense of humor is what really made me crush on him all over again.I laughed out loud so many times- especially as he described his antics (antics..? I have NEVER used that word in a sentence...EVER...Gosh I'm old...)over in Vietnam entertaining the troups.

I admire his wife and the strength of their relationship that allowed him to put his life onto paper like this. I'm so happy they've stayed together.Excellent book- my husband now wants to read it.

Side note- THANK YOU to whatever genius decided to imbed a few of his new song-videos into the IPAD version of his book. I have now just downloaded his entire album off of Itunes.I'm a fan of the man, a fan of his book- and now a renewed fan of his music. Well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very honest look into Rick Springfield's life
I have been a fan of Rick's since his "Jessie's Girl" days and in 2001 was even brought up on stage with him during one his shows, which was a huge highlight for me.I had just gotten done reading the memoior one of my other favorite singers Pat Benatar and was expecting something along those lines.I was pleasantly surprised. Not only is he very funny in a Jen Lancaster kind of way, but he is very self-deprecating in his humor.I don't see anything at all egotistical about him (like others have mentioned) and I found him to be quite enduring.I do admit my stomach literally turned when I read about all his sexual conquests, but I applaud him for being so honest and forthright.I think Barbara is very strong and supportive to stick by him - especially after the affair he had in Vegas. My heart truly aches for her.

I laughed and cried my way through the book and when I came to the end I was bawling so hard, my hubby woke up next to me asking if I was all right.I've always known of Rick's love of dogs, but those last few pages when he was talking about Gomer literally ripped my heart out.

I also commend him for being so open and honest about his struggles with his Darkness (as he calls his depression).I think there are so many people out there who suffer from depression in silence.Hopefully they will read Rick's book and realize that things do change from day to day and to hang in there because it DOES get better.Rick is living proof of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story Teller in Writing and Song
Regardless if you're a Rick Springfield fan, this book does not disappoint.
He relates to us all when he talks about insecurities, guilt, death, and selfishness. I especially enjoyed the parts where he talks about going back to homes he used to live in and all of the feelings those visits brought back. A thoroughly enjoyable read I could not put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprise Surprise
It's been said be careful if you meet your heroes. You can love the artist but may not like the person. With Late, Late at Night you get to meet both the artist and the person. The artist is a brilliant guitar player, singer, songwriter, and performer. The person is not too different from the rest of us - full of hopes, dreams, faults, and failures. While Rick's song lyrics over the years have given us a little glimpse into his real life, the book lays it all out. Fans only interested in the image, may not appreciate the brutal honesty in this book. His life events are funny, sad, sarcastic, hopeful - but always interesting. His writing style spans from whimsical and self-depricating to (dare I say) thought provoking and spiritual. For someone who's been sometimes labeled as "bubble gum", Rick and his life are anything but. As a lifelong fan, I can say that I was actually releaved that my "hero" - this cool good looking chick magnet rocker dude - had trouble making friends, meeting girls, hated school, fought depression....real issues we all struggle with. It's definately a good entertaining read for fans or just those who want to take a ride in the life of a rock star. In the end, I think you may actually appreciate the man as much as the artist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rick Springfield Is Very Sexy
Rick Springfield is sexy. However, let's throw his good looks out the window for a few minutes.Sexiness comes from within and Mr. Springfield has that in spades due to the fact that he's very good at what he does.He writes and sings catchy pop songs that stick with you long after the song is over, plays a mean power pop guitar, and is very analytical about his life as witnessed in this interesting autobiography.

Despite his depression and addictions, Springfield comes across as a likeable, sincere guy through these pages. He's somebody that women find attractive, yet he's a man's man.The most interesting bits about this book is when he writes about the behind-the-scenes details of the entertainment business.Reading these revealing sections prove that "All that glitters isn't gold".

After reading LATE, LATE AT NIGHT, Rick Springfield seems to be more interesting than his "sex symbol" status. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Rick Springfield!
This book briefly covers all aspects of RS until 1984. RS is a very private person, so whatever glipse we get into his life is a rare treat. We get a little peice of Rick knowledge all through his career.Don't look for deep writing or a lot of delving. The book gives you a lot of fun facts and great pictures. It tells you his hobbies, food, favorite composers and other little details. So if you are a Rick Springfield fan this book is essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars betty's Rick Springfield the book review
I thought it was a good depiction of the man, it tells of his life before and after music, but it left a lot of wonder in the mind as to what was not told. I think that it could have gone a little deeper as to the life of the man as a musician and the man himself. It left so many questions unanswered in my mind and i am sure in the minds of all who read the book. ... Read more

Excerpt: Errol Leslie Flynn (20 June 1909 14 October 1959) was an Australian-American film actor, known for his romantic swashbuckler roles in Hollywood films and his flamboyant lifestyle. Errol Flynn was born in Hobart, Tasmania, where his father, Theodore Thomson Flynn, was a lecturer (1909) and later professor (1911) of biology at the University of Tasmania (UTAS). His mother was born Lily Mary Young, but dropped the first names Lily Mary shortly after she was married and changed her name to Marelle. Flynn described his mother's family as "seafaring folk" and this appears to be where his life-long interest in boats and the sea originated. Despite Flynn's claims, the evidence indicates that he was not descended from any of the Bounty mutineers. Married at St John's Church of England, Balmain North, Sydney, on 23 January 1909, both of his parents were native-born Australians of Irish, English and Scottish descent, with convict links to Tasmania long before Flynn's birth. Flynn, living at Mclean Ave Chatswood, Sydney, New South Wales in 1926, attended Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore School) where he was the classmate of future Australian Prime Minister, John Gorton. He was expelled for fighting and, allegedly, having sex with a school laundress. He was also expelled from several other schools he had attended in Tasmania.
